I always thought it was funny how unintentionally they set up the Cell arc. Besides Gohan being the hero, Piccolo's connection to Kami was brought up which is a nice reminder because they eventually fuze together. The insight to Krillin's love life since the next arc he will be pining for 18.
The reminder isn't exactly necessary considering it immediately follows Namek...where wished back Piccolo = revived Kami, it's like it's a whole plot point.
It’s funny how despite this arc being so awful, the anime is actually better off with it there from a storytelling perspective. This and all the other Gohan-centric filler that was added from the start of the anime up until the moment Gohan steps into the spotlight does so much to make that moment actually feel both earned, expected, and to make Gohan feel like a much more natural protagonist for the series than what we were left with in the manga. That only makes what happened to Gohan after Cell feel more frustrating if you mostly consumed the anime first. Reading the manga, one can’t help but almost agree with Toriyama’s realization that the character as he’d written him wasn’t a match for the series’ main protagonist. In the anime… it was working up to that point, because anime Gohan is honestly a slightly different character.
When I was a kid I thought Garlic Jr must've been in Dragonball
I didn't mind this filler arc when the show was airing in Canada back in the late 90's. It kind of made the "Freeza isn't dead" reveal that much more impactful.
Also I love how marron is just a sexier version of bulma
Sexier version of DBZ Bulma. I guess they thought Bulma was getting too old for fanservice?

Elijah Ford you’ve neither watched Dragon Ball nor watched anime in general. In Japan there is no such thing as “too young for fan service” and Toriyama drew tennage Bulmas tits more than once. Toriyama is a pervert.

it is interesting how back then writers were forced to make a story WITHOUT goku...i mean just compare it now to DBS, where every story is revolving around goku and vegeta even when it shouldnt like future trunks arc

I mean it drives me nuts how in 2020 we don't see One Armed Future Gohan in any of the games when he was all over the place when him and Trunks were the Goat

This was the arc that brought me into Dragonball, as I was swapping channels and saw Piccolo Biting Krillin. So for a year or so I thought Piccolo was the shows version of a vampire.

The most memorable moment from this arc was when some random couple, inexplicable unaffected by the black water mist were ripped to shreds by a bunch of ravenous cats and rats. That was horrifying. This arc also gave us the awkward realization that Krillin named his daughter after his ex girlfriend. Either way, happy New Year!
That was a pretty awesome moment. I considered including a moment to talk about it, but I just couldn't make it fit. The video was already long enough as it is.

I repeat LOL, I love The Garlic Jr Saga! It's my favorite filler arc of all time. I think was brilliant in showing what just three of the soon to be lower tear characters were capable of without Goku and Vageta the two strongest fighters of the show popping in to the rescue for once. Plus we got the watch the whole thing in one weekend in the states as kids, Toonami called it New Years Evil.

If they wanted to make a movie based arc Turlus actually would have been an interesting call. They wouldn’t have been able to make it a sequel to the Tree of Might due to the timeline issues but having a villain with Goku’s face appear right after his supposed death would have been brutal. Just imagine the excitement everyone would feel seeing their friend return and the horror they’d feel when he started attacking.
I first got into the series when Toonami was airing the Buu arc of Z and the first two arcs of the original Dragon Ball. Then when I eventually saw this arc on tv, I thought to myself "Gee, that Pilaf guy sure did become a much more credible threat". It doesn't help that in the dub the two are voiced by the same actor.
I remember thinking garlic jr is pilaf's brother due to both them being imps and have opposite personality of each other
In the original JPN, Pilaf and Garlic ALSO share the same voice actor! XD

I love the artstyle in this saga to he honest I kinda give me a halloween vibe which kinda fits with garlic jr character design and his minions. Also I find this saga really underrated it nice to take a from characters like goku or vegeta especially since that all super is.
I feel like if this saga was better written it would be a great way to set up for Gohan to become the main hero in the later cell saga.
I mean Dragon Ball is just Goku, Z is just Goku, Gohan and Vegeta and GT is just Goku again. It's not like Super is that different.
The part where you said how you wish the other characters were brainwash and became Garlic Jr's minions and Gohan and Kirillen were force to fight them reminds me of when HIM brainwashed everyone into hating the Powerpuff girls and the girls were forced to fight them

Perhaps, if Piccolo is indeed a demon, he just simply isn't affected by it. After all, he wasn't affected when he inhaled it, since we didn't see him avoid it outright, so it would follow he wouldn't be affected by having it injected into himself, either. But, I suppose the point of it not actually explaining of why exactly he's immune is an issue.
Introducing Marron, the girlfriend Krillin didn’t get to keep because she wasn’t canon.

Garlic Jr is Gohan's Arch Enemy. In japanese mythology, use use rice to purify demonic spirits. Garlic Jr. is a Demon from another world. He's more like Dracula or Count Yasunori from the Teito Monogatari stories that came around the time. I always liked Garlic Jr because he's more of a believable threat that Zamasu and Goku Black. He's immortal, but beatable making him easier to reuse in filler. Same goes for Turles since he's an Evil Goku. I like beatable villains cause they are fun to write about.
On the one hand, I agree that Garlic Jr and Tullece/Turles are more interesting than Zamasu. On the other hand, I didn't mind Zamasu's concept. One of the gods seeing how crazy the Dragon Ball universe is getting and wanting to press the reset button is interesting. It's just unfortunate that his plan and backstory were so convoluted.
Also, he undid Trunks' hard earned happy ending from the Android Saga, so that gave me another reason to hate him.
We appreciate you lance. You're that extra welcomed friend we need to sit at a chill bar or cafe and have tid bit dragon ball debates or conversations.

I think that it would have been kinda interesting to see Vegeta interact with Garlic Jr....like "no matter how strong he is compared to him, he'll never be able to kill him", but maybe that could contradict some of his future actions (?)

i like how hot yamcha is at the start of this arc so blooma can get jealous of marron giving him attention..he looks ripped...
Yamcha has more air time in this arc. He at least comes out and turns to a vampire and fights Piccolo & has some funny moments before.

When DBZ first aired on German television, I was highly confused about this arc because nothing of it appeared in the manga and the corresponding movie hadn't been realeased until about about three years after the arc.
Same here in the Netherlands, although the start of DBZ was also confusing because the Dragon Ball series never aired here on tv either, the whole show just started with Raditz landing on Earth.
@@bananatree2527 Although if you haven't seen DB you can kind of assume it's based on material from that. Arguably, it's MORE confusing if you've seen the original. In UK I saw the movie as well because funi showed them, so I knew who Garlic Jr was, so that's theoretically enough material to not be confused, but it's only more confusing because back then I knew the movies were a separate canonicity.

I think the main reason they chose Garlic Jr. is because he's the only movie villain who was still alive. Not sure if having some previously-unseen minion revive a villain with the Dragon Balls a la Resurrection F would be more contrived the Makkyo Planet.

The Garlic Jr Saga was my first experience with Dragon Ball, and I didn't find it so bad. The simple premise made me want to watch more and when the whole Cell Saga kicked off, I was already engaged with the story, I guess this is why the Cell Saga is my favourite tho.

The Garlic Junior saga is the perfect lead-in to 2020. After Freeza, everyone was wondering what could top it, and they got Garlic Junior. Everyone was complaining about 2019 and saying a new decade would be better, and we got 2020.

dragonball was once a simple goku story that to me rivals how i feel about one piece for being personal and great..then dbz's 2nd half attacked...now its just meh..

I remember when this first came out on TV for Toonami's short lived Saturday morning block "Rising Sun". I was pretty much past the age of waking up early for cartoons, but I'll be damned if I didn't make it a point to get up to watch and tape these episodes. Yeah they weren't the best, but it was new episodes of my favorite show at the time. Great dissection Lance!

In the English dub, this was the first time Chuck Huber (later cast as the voice of Emperor Pilaf) voiced a character in the series before Android 17.
Lol, I wish you had talked a little more about Garlic Jr. opening the Dead Zone again. It was the same thing that defeated him in the first battle. He's immortal. He can't die. All he has to do is keep fighting. Eventually the heroes would lose because their energy would be spent. He has an easy win by war of attrition. There needed to be a more creative way of winning.
There could've been some magical seal that Gohan learned to use but, nope. They just have Garlic Jr. use the only move that can defeat him a second time. 😂😂😂
True,but buuhan coulda beat vegito if he just spread his molecules through space or made his whole body absorption goo. Many villains lose because of bad hindsite. Mecha frieza shouldn't have gone to the surface. Cell should blew up the Earth when super perfect. Kid buy shoulda teleported away ECT ECT. It's a definite flaw I agree but nothing new to db. And don't even get me started on super XD
I've said it before, they should have brought back the Mafuba. They were sitting on a great callback since they were dealing with the Mazoku again. Gohan could have learned it from Kami, or maybe Kami is the one who uses it, but Garlic Jr is breaking out of it, and Gohan stops him by blowing up the Makyo star. And then when he's about to die from the strain, the former gods appear again in the sky and give life back to him because he passed their test and selflessly laid down his life for the Earth.
Gohan is still the hero who turns the tide, Kami finally beats his old nemesis, and Garlic Jr. ends up trapped forever in some container that they can then toss away into some other dimension through some mystical room in the heavenly realm, never to be seen again.
Still better than rehashing the Dead Zone

I always thought of Piccolo not turning was due to his Namekian healing ability.
But Piccolo doesn't have a healing ability. He even asks Dende during The Freeza Arc if he can do that, and Dende tells him he can't.
MistareFusion well I meant it like when he can re-grow lost limbs and so on.
To me, it seems kind of a stretch. He places his hand on his neck and some kind of... thing... happens, but that's only after he reveals that it didn't affect him. That seems akin to Gohan jumping back into the Freeza fight and revealing that Dende has healing powers... and only after he says that does Dende heal him. At some point your story's dramatic reveal is running headlong into common sense.

It's kinda weird how Marron makes fun of Bulma and Chichi for being old even though neither of them have even hit 30 at this point. Chichi can't even be any more than a few years older than Marron.
23:05 Pretty obvious really. Krillin knows that between him and Yamcha there'd be a 98% chance someone would die during the trip so he went with the safe bet in Gohan.

I've been really excited for this video, and it's a great way to close out DBD December!
I know this arc gets a lot of disdain, but I can't totally hate it. Seeing Kuririn, Gohan and Piccolo take center stage instead of just being saved by Goku (plus, they're three of my favorite characters) is a treat, and I do like Garlic Jr and his minions' designs quite a lot.
That said, I do agree that it would have been really cool if a vastly different combinations of characters had been used. What if, say, Yamcha and Chaozu were the ones left that weren't affected and fought beside Gohan? I'm always down to see underused characters and combinations in the spotlight.

I actually really love the vegeta scenes in garlic jr. I think it’s good foreshadowing for the next arc where he becomes a Super Saiyan finally
You know Piccolo in this arc brings up the muscle thing, that Cell says to Trunks, to Garlic Jr here. It's interesting to see it brought up in the exact same manner. Piccolo even bulks up himself to prove how easy it was.

I'm kinda suprised you didn't comment on Maron's design at all, her being a "Hot Bulma". Imo it's a bit odd they felt they need to have sexy version of the most sexual character in the show.

If there's anything that you and Geekdom few other DBZ youtubers have encouraged me to to do, is to start watching the series over in Japanese next time, to better appreciate and understand the source material. It's almost a completely different show in some regards when it comes to many dubs.
These retrospectives generally give me a newfound appreciation for the series too, even with it's crazy faults we've witnessed. It's always important to analyze what makes a series work or not, especially for ones that are your favorite.

Garlic Jr has always been one of my favorite villains
I thought the Garlic Jr. Saga was cool when I first watched it. But it's full with so many inconsistencies that make it quite a slog to watch through. Marron and her story was by far the best episodes to come out if the arc. She's one if my favorite non-canon characters.
I’ve never understood the hate for this arc. I’d kill for something like this in super. A viable threat. No Goku ,no Vegeta, no beerus. Just the “dragon team” trying too save the world.
I’d also add it does add some credence to a lot of the plot points that are only lightly touched on. Take this on and when was the last time Kami did something before the cell arc ? Take this out and Gohan really really doesn’t do anything till the fight with cell. You can also say for Krillin it makes more sense after this arc it make sense Krillin would fall for the next character that’s a girl after getting his heart broken (Kinda like what you said).
I never understood the hate for the Garlic Jr. arc. I thought it was extremely well executed and certainly better than any other filler in DBZ. It was awesome to see the secondary characters carry the weight, and the development of Piccolo and Kami's relationship made their subsequent fusion much more impactful.
Sorry for the Double Post, my theory is that the TV staff took advantage of the TV Runtime to tell a Movie Length Story Line without budget or time constraints. It's possible the TV staff can tell a story about Cooler, Turles, Slug, and Garlic Jr because they have an actual personality. Androids 13-15 are just prototypes who can be included to interact with 16-18. 13 himself said that he was activated when the heroes killed Gero, making him an antagonist they created.
I love the point about being alien demons, just a reminder in DBS Piccolo proclaims that he's the Demon King, since Frost was confused about his arms
i love how this filler arc based on a filler non canon movie has a filler side quest with filler esque minor character popo that also reuses shots of them running to extend episodes so even more filler so its filler hat wearing times 4 up in here lol ...could you be any more filler?

Seeing as this story arc came out after Yamucha was suddenly announced in the manga to be a cheater, I guess the producers of the show decided to show proof of Yamucha being ready to do so whenever Maron flirted with him.
I had nightmares as a kid about my parents turning into vampires and trying to kill me after watching this arc.
Easily one of my favourite RUclipsrs.

I've always really liked the idea of this arc. Gohan and friends having to protect Earth without Goku to come in at the last second and super saiyan the problem away? So much potential! But potential does not make a good story as this arc proves

I've been listening to you for years but something about the ending of this episode in particular really moved me to say something. Hopefully you see it sometime even if you don't acknowledge it. I hope you know that you're doing something so special with this channel that offers something we can't get from Blackenfist, Laughingstock Media, or even Geekdom. Not that those channels and their content are any better or worse - rather, you are so surgically precise with your editing, writing, etc in a way that other channels aren't. I'm tempted to say that this series is the magnum opus of all DragonBall analysis and I say that without exaggeration. Your points and criticisms are ones that I find myself using when discussing the tropes of the series and common complaints with friends.
I'm sure that you have since come to terms with the loss of your mother but I couldn't help but write out everything I've been thinking all these years after hearing about it in the video, even at the risk of sounding uncouth. I don't want to ramble much more so I'll just say much love, Lance. I'm really excited to see what you have in store going forward.

Sadly (since they never provided a good explination for it), we can assume Piccolo wasn't effected by the demon mind-control mist for the same reason other interesting powers stop working in Dragon Ball: He was "too strong" for it.
