- Dragon Ball Dissection December begins with our look at the changes made for the animated version of The Freeza Arc! Several elements are expanded upon, characters are split in two, and Gohan and the others wind up at the wrong planet. Let's explore some of the most infamous filler segments in Dragon Ball!

Toyotaro.added a panel where one of Frieza's henchman killed by Zarbon was resurrected by Porunga. This was the same henchman later arrested by the Patrol after escaping Namek on a Ginyu ship who helps Moro escape.

4:22 Notice that kid looks like a Dragon Quest character. Also know that Akira Toriyama did the character designs for the Dragon Quest series. Also also remember that Dragon Quest was called "Dragon Warrior" in the US until 2005 because of a trademark conflict. Bulma could have been more useful if she brought capsule aircraft and used them to taxi the boys around in order to keep the bad guys from finding them on their scouters. This way, Bulma would have followed them to the Elder and would never have been out of the loop. There's also a long period of time when Krillin is flying to the Grand Elder and Gohan is alone with Bulma. Bulma could have passed the time by telling Gohan stories about when his father was a boy and it could have gotten the late-arrival audience up to speed on the series. The fake Nameks also call their little ship "Goku" but in the 2005 redub they call it "Wukong."

The beheading wasn't a Ki blast, I never saw it this way - I always saw it as an after image of a super speed karate chop, his posture afterwards gave this impression heavily.

With how resented modern anime adaptations are for changes to source material, my impression of Dragon Ball filler has really improved. Studio Pierrot is mostly to blame for that reputation for their cookie cutter plots for longrunning Jump series. It might actually be because modern anime studios are cautious with what they write. They likely don't want to contradict anything that might happen in the manga later, so when they have original content its completely self-enclosed and disconnected from the main story. Nothing of consequence can happen to the established cast so it depends entirely on the studios original characters who will never be seen or mentioned again. Makes it hard to get invested. DB & Sayian arc Toei did all kinds of little things to expand the world and characters and improve pacing for broadcast tv, and the decision to stay in line with the manga later was probably to its detriment. While Toriyama only had a few pages every week, I'm sure Toei could have done more with the underused characters if they were given the discretion. Anything would be better than the long panning shots, Greek chorus, and half a chapter of content per episode which are commonly relied on now to keep pace with currently serialized source material.
Feels like studios should communicate with the author more about certain character info and what they can or can't embellish on.

Freeza initially wanted to kill Goku first for hurting him with his prior attack. Piccolo took the bullet. Which leads to Goku suggesting Krillin and Gohan to get away. I had always thought it was the suggestion for them to get away that made Freeza decide to kill them before Goku.

For DBZ, that explains a lot of the dragged out fights in the filler, so I can see why they did the Garlic Jr saga, which I remember liking, but I feel like if I came back to it, I might end up hating it.

I love the Kaio Training being shown especially when the shafted trio beat the Ginju force. I don't remember much of fake Namek. The Tension in the story is what made the Frieza arc interesting, and I doubt many people cared about Namek and it's culture. Maybe if it were explored, some would like it. Tho with the illogical Book of Legends that happens to know about Super Saiyan God for some reason I doubt Toriyama could come up with anything original. Super is really upsetting.

The Namekians having a book of Legends is pretty cool, to me at least. It would help explain why Guru knew Super Saiyans were a thing.
Fake Namek is really underappreciated. It's one of times where Filler can be enjoyable. I mean Bulma takes on a Giant Crab.
But it came at literally the deadest point in the entire arc. Zarbon was dead. Freeza couldn't do anything. Vegeta couldn't leave his Dragon Balls. Gohan and Kuririn were on a road trip. Nothing was happening. It didn't interrupt anything.
Can’t believe you actually sold me on Fake Namek not being so bad. When I watched it I was really annoyed at how it was a complete fake out where obviously nothing would happen but they wanted you to think it was the real deal. Something about that just totally irked me, it’s like if the anime had a movie where they want you to think Goku’s gonna go super Saiyan and fake you out at the end but you can kinda see it coming, and they do it right before it actually happens in the anime and you’re already desperately waiting to see it. Huh... feels familiar.
So I could kinda tell once I was a bit into it that it was anime only filler and so I think I assumed that everything I saw the characters do, they’d be doing again slightly differently on real namek, and I forgot that they never actually do that. So all those cool creatures, locations, and activities were categorized in my mind as Namek things, and all I remembered Fake Namek for was the lame fake out. But it’s only looking back here that I’m realizing how much cool stuff it actually introduced. Still, I’m more frustrated that that cool stuff wasn’t just in the real show than I am thankful for Fake Namek, but you convinced me enough.
As for that Giant Crab arc. Sorry, but you’re just not selling me on new story for Bluma being worth that grinding halt to the plot with unbelievably boring events for multiple episodes.
Hearing you squeal like a happy schoolkid about how great Fake Namek is reminded me of how positive your channel’s content is, in a way you haven’t stopped being like to this day. Please, for however long you make entertainment for RUclips, never lose this aspect of yourself man. It’s the reason I’ve gone back to binge your stuff in anticipation for the end of the Super 17 arc.

One of my favorite filler moments is when Bulma gets the idea of going back to Earth to bring Goku to Namek, stoically says it'll take two months, and then in a nervous panic tries to be positive about it by pointing out how long that is in days, hours, minutes, and seconds. Then Krillin just responds with a nervous laugh. 😂
The Freeza Arc Filler is I C O N I C
I honestly always enjoyed things like fake Namek and Bulma vs the crab too. Granted, I also came to DBZ from the anime first and so I didn't even know there was any original source that these events weren't part of until years later.
Still, an anime running concurrently with a manga is always going to need to include filler of some kind or another, and I'd much rather have material that actually EXPANDS the story rather than stuff that only STRETCHES it out, aka wherein characters spending entire episodes powering up single attacks.
I agree, and the one reason the original Dragon Ball and Saiyan saga expand the material so much better than Frieza saga.
As irritating as some of Dragon Ball's filler can be, at least it doesn't pull a Bleach and interupt important events like say a fight with the main antagonist of the arc and tell the audience that they're going to do a filler story.

Fake Namek is hilarious and people hate it for not having been in the manga...from people who never read the manga and only ever watched the English dub of the cartoon, because other people _told them_ it's not in the manga and therefore not good.

I have that weird feeling Toriyama wrote so many time skips so TV series would expand on it. What if that was the case of one climate planet Namek? This is all thoughts in hindsight because now with complete series we know what elements deserve more time to expand on.

After rewatching this, I'm now awaiting the 15 minute rant on how You can die after you're dead when it comes up in the Majin Buu Dissection.
If those two pink aliens hadn't of been such jerks, and asked nicely, Bulma, Kuririn and Gohan would have given a ride off fake Namek. They probably would have had to have gone to real name first though. They might have even been useful by sending Freiza and Vegeta to get fake Dragon balls while Gohan & Kuririn looked for the real ones.
Back again. Regarding the Appule/Orlen thing, there’s also the scene where the former and Zarbon are dispatched to track down the dragon balls and clearly shows Appule leaving, only for Orlen to be introduced a couple of episodes later as if he were the one that took off with Zarbon. Yet Appule is brought in after Orlen's death…and from the ceiling shot of Frieza ordering him to summon the Ginyus, you see Orlen's carcass behind Appule. What a ride.
I thought I was the only one who enjoyed the Fake Namek arc. You literally listed every reason I liked it. Between the adventure, the (fake) culture, the mindscrew. Never thought it deserved the hate it got.

Well, plenty of ships (back when ships were the primary means of traveling across continents) had the ability to defend themselves in case some pirates were to come knocking. Just like how regular people might carry a gun on them when they go outside just in case they get mugged, I can totally believe that spaceships would have the ability to defend themselves in case they come across any space pirates, seeing as they tend to be light years way from any space police.

My favorite filler here was the dead z fighters fighting the dead ginyu force members. That was the pay off to me. Plus is was truly the last time Yamcha was cool. Beating dead fighters in the Buu arc didn't have the same satisfying feeling as him beating the guy who curb stomped Vegeta.

Allowing that I haven't seen most of this saga since it aired on Toonami, I also liked the space orphans, Fake Namek, and Bulma vs. the crabs. Hell, I liked the Ginyus on King Kai's planet and Bulma vs. Captain Ginyu too. The one piece of filler I've soured on over the years is the flashbacks to King Vegeta. I'm fine with it as a concept, and I like the original King Vegeta design, but one of the things that the Bardock special did so well was giving some degree of pathos to the slaughter of the Saiyans by showing that they were loyal to Freeza. King Vegeta actively conspiring to overthrow Freeza really undermines that idea.
Query: In Buluma’s little filler arc, was Buluma’s flashback of first meeting Goku your first experience of the DRAGONBALL Anime? I know it was mine, showing this to be a much longer story than I thought.
It was! And it so excited me! And it wasn't long before I bought up all 13 episodes that had been dubbed up to that point. The flashbacks to DB were moments I treasured back then, to be sure.
That gravity training episode stuck with me since i was a kid. Somehow my kid self was ready for bulky men beating the shit out of each other, but not Goku being in such an intense situation. Him getting his hand cut always got me. In contrast the glue Kamehameha near the sun episode is stuck with me mostly over the fond memory of watching it at my grandparents house when i was little.
Imho fake Namek wasn't that great but Bulma's stuff was. The orphans part was okay, kinda felt like the first half of GT (the best half)

I didn't care much for the first bit of space adventure filler, as I felt that it feeling like it was from a different series made me eager to see it be over, but I am in full agreement about liking Fake Namek. It's amazing how much more interesting that phony planet is than the real one.
I likewise enjoyed the Bulma crab stuff. And I even liked the bit where Piccolo takes on Yamcha, Tenshinhan, and the other one.

Well my theory about everyone hating the initial fillers, is just that it gets in the way of the story, at that point you're hyped for more vegeta, then for frieza, and the fillers, despite being okay, are just completely unrelated and they drag out, an already really dragged out story arc
That, and most people wanting to see strong dudes fight.
@@succubastard1019 I feel like Lance overlooks how a lot of Dragon Ball Z fans were into the show because of the fighting, because it was the sort of action that American shows had lacked. As such, filler feels... tedious next to it.
I believe that people dislike Fake Namek in specific because of the resolution of it being all an illusion. It does make you feel like you just wasted a lot of time
As for the Saiyan Saga, Goku's space travel and the Mirror Ship, I think it's just that the word filler has been tainted by Naruto, a series that cannot for the life of it get filler right
This is true, especially with Bulma and the crab where it comes right as the Ginyu Force are about to arrive and as Kuririn and Gohan are going to the elder to get power upgrades. As the viewer you want to know what happens next, not sit through 40 minutes of unrelated Bulma shenanigans. Fake Namek is less egregious in that regard because they're still on the way to Namek, but when the end of the arc reveals that the entire thing was a waste of time you sort of feel as though you were tricked into getting invested in a Dragon Ball hunt that wasn't real. The story felt like it was progressing across several episodes of your time only for it to turn out it wasn't at all. Honestly the Fake Namek arc as a concept would have been better suited to that first arc of Dragon Ball GT where it could have been a several episode series of adventures on a foreign exotic planet. Obviously it couldn't be based on Namek, but they could have another planet where the aliens assume the form of friendly locals claiming that all 7 of the Black Star Dragon Balls were on their one planet while the heroes go on the same adventures across the planet recovering them while those same aliens try to fix the ship to escape. Bonus points if one of the Dragon Balls they gathered there had been real so both the characters and the viewer get something out of it.

Honestly Bulma vs the crab might be my favorite filler in Dragon Ball.
I never really got the hate for fake Namek, outside of "bruh it's useless filler" then again I've always been a fan of villains who conjure illusionary worlds/events to trick the heroes, these villains, Mysterio from Spider-Man etc.
Well it looks like Freeza will take 4 episodes after all. It is funny though since the first episode after the dissection december you'll have you're hundredth DB Dissection video, and it will be the Buu Saga.
I will say though if you really fudge the details of the Zarbon fight you can just say that Zarbon told Vegeta off screen since there are a few cut-aways during Vegeta and Zarbon's first fight. I dunno
As for Goku being afraid of needles that is pretty stupid since he can literally just tighten his skin and be inpenetrable (Although in this case he's injured so I can believe that he's too weak to do that. Although it is kind of funny since Goku took something waaaaayyy more intrusive to the chest to save Gohan (The Makkankosappo) which penetrates the skin way worse, it kind of gives weight to his sacrifice if he is supposedly afraid of needles. I dunno.
Just bc you can defend against something doesn’t mean u can’t be afraid of it. I can easily kill bugs and spiders but will still freak out if they come near me

I always thought Vegeta just killed Gurudo by just moving at super speed, and I guess decapitating him. Never seemed like a ki blast to me. Hmmm...

When fake namek has more culture than earth
Vegeta lands on the ground as Guldo's head falls off, so the blue line in the anime is a motion line where Vegeta strikes Guldo. Much like how the anime didn't show what the manga showed concerning Gohan and the cell juniors, the anime doesn't show the gore and chooses to simply show a line through Guldo's neck, implying a slash, followed by Vegeta landing on the ground.... not that it really matters due to it being a downgrade from the manga version's badass gore scene, as well as in the case of the cell juniors.
Me: Wow! This was a pretty positive episode, really singing more of the show's praises than I thought it would. Kind of a nice change of pace after the Cell Arc.

I like the idea of Frieza trying to kill Goku instead of piccolo. It’s pretty contrived that he constantly holds back to not kill him him to the point he almost dies and would still not try to end it as quickly as possible.
Oh, I get that. Remember that that was one of my complaints about the original story. But it makes little sense for Freeza to go, "I'm going to shoot my nemesis. Oh. Oh, darn. Someone jumped in front of him. I guess I can't do that. Now I'm going to do the exact opposite instead."
MistareFusion true. Honestly he could’ve just opened his hand and blown them all away with a big enough ki blast, but the whole Frieza fight is just full of contrivances to keep the main cast alive even though Frieza could kill most of them at any time he wanted.

The issue with Freeza having extra soldiers is that it creates a major plot hole. In the manga, when Freeza's men fight the Namekian warriors, Moori, the elder, figures out that Freeza and his men can't sense energy without the scouters. This is why he destroys the remaining scouters before he is killed, leaving Freeza and his men blind.
Losing all the scouters actually sets Freeza back a huge way because now he and Zarbon can't find Vegeta or the other villages. Freeza was only able to find Guru and Nail's location because he got a new scouter from the Ginyus. Yet the anime shows he still had soldiers with scouters, so there was reason he couldn't find them already. This also ends up invalidating Moori's sacrifice, since he's actions end up helping the heroes in a big way by delaying Freeza
14:11 To be fair, it would have made a _lot_ more sense if Goku had run into a group of soldiers desperately preparing the escape pods because they can't contact their boss, and intimidating them into preparing one for him. Are they really gonna argue with the only Ki user in the immediate area, who appears to have survived whatever's making the planet shake, after he tells them that he's inadvertently responsible for bringing them back to life, and the planet's about to explode *because* of Frieza?
First they encounter those orphan children in that mirror plated ship... Where did that race of orphan children get their technology from?
I LIKE FAKE NAMEK TOO! I finally found someone who agrees with me! I just like how space travel is actually, you know, clumsy? And not smooth sailing.
People hate it for it has done it's job too well. Fake Namek is villainous. Not the place but the arc itself. It punches you right in the guts with hopeless situation. It is easy to hate someone like let's say horny shapeshifting alien emperor but in Fake Namek saga greatest enemy is bad luck. Universe if you will. All those efforts, everything to bring back they (and we) love... just to end up in the dark with nothing. There is also this simple thought. If it wasn't for Fake Namek maybe Gohan and Krillin could save more people.
On this watch through, it makes me think about how much I want you to cover super after GT, and the other bits of dragonball animation that has come out sense
But honestly, what I really want you to read is the supermanga, you once said you had no interest in it and did not, but there's honestly some great things in it, in my opinion anyway-
I hope you reconsider that decision one day, well you probably blooked at "black frezia" and rolled your eyes, there's alot more in the manga then just that.
Granted when it "gets good" is when it starts separating from the anime's decisions in the black ark.
The ToP is... well better but- that's not hard with pacing alone, mostly it focuses on things the anime dose not, leaving some of the more interesting concepts the anime touched but didn't take all the way, essentially ignored unfortunately....
But the totally orginal arks I think make some very nice ideas, in a very nice story, I don't wana spoile it but i sorta assume, you already know everything and didn't realize try to avoid spoilers before hand

Even if Orlen and the others came back via Shenron, they would’ve been teleported to Earth like Ginyu so they wouldn’t have been a problem for Goku. They would’ve been for the guys on earth.
Wouldn’t that have made a better filler arc than Garlic Jr? The survivors of Frieza’s contention from Namek forming a cell under Ginyu (who would somehow get back his purple horned form; the frog in that body also got transported there) who try and interfere with Gohan and company while Goku is still away and Vegeta is out in space?

EDIT: I've always liked the DBZ filler. Yeah it's filler but DBZ was very thin on small character moments so if you're like me and genuinely liked Yamcha and Bulma and the rest, the filler is all you have.

The problem with fake Namek is that it is fake and not real Namek. It's adventure is pretty fun.

I always figured that Frieza was trying to injure Goku so he couldn't help his friends or something, but that doesn't make any sense either because he goes after Krillin immediately after so... ehh
I interpreted it as Frieza going directly for the kill at first, but changing his mind after seeing Piccolo sacrificing himself.
Nice. Can't wait for the obligatory "neverending fight" joke. Every Dragon Ball fan knows of this. Even as a kid I found the pacing weird

I'm rewatching the anime adaptation for the first time in a long while and I got to those episodes last week, and honestly, Fake Namek wasn't nearly as bad as I've heard from other people, tho I still have a hard time trying to enjoy the whole thing, I'm not sure what is the problem here, but I just get really bored in the middle, when they're searching for the Dragon Balls and stuff.
Also, near the end of this "mini arc", when Lychee and Zarkro were above the door of the ship, waiting for it to close, I REALLY thought that Blooma would do something incredible, something that I would never see coming, and would outsmart those guys somehow and defeat them alone... but then Kuririn and Gohan appeared to punch the problem out of existence...
As for the crab filler, it might be one of the best anime-only episodes in the last three arcs of the series, I don't have much to say about it before everything you already did.
Since i'm talking about Blooma now, might as well mention the filler scene were she was chased by a dinosaur, I hate it soooo much, because, just like the end of Fake Namek, I was expecting for her to somehow win using her inteligence... but then Kuririn and Gohan appeared again to save her butt

So was about King Kai in the Cell Arc? Goku got King Kai gregory and bubbles killed by Cell.
Which would make sense if the buu retcon worked however they then wished after cell was defeated to "Bring everyone back killed by cell" which worked for everyone except goku who chose to be dead. So why is King Kai, bubbles and gregory still dead?
In the same story they wished "everyone killed by cell" alive. Yet this plothole continues through to super and today.

Even on rewatches of this episode, it's pretty cathartic to hear somebody stick up for Fake Namek. Yes, it's filler that only amounts to preventing the anime from catching up to the manga too quickly. Yes, it's all an illusion, and a rather nonsensical one at that. But it's shocking that nobody else gives any credit to the creativity Toei Animation put into the design of this fabricated world, considering that the *actual* Namek is unanimously agreed to be a boring looking place. The fact that this *isn't* what the real planet looks like is tragic.
Which it was on tonight! I guess I can watch at work.
