- DBZ filler gets a bad reputation. While it could be tedious at times, bringing us to a fake Namek or making fighter much longer than they were intended to be, there were plenty of moments and episodes exclusive to the anime that I really enjoyed. So for this video, I’m looking at my favorite instances of filler in Dragon Ball Z. By “moment,” these fillers can either last for a few minutes to spanning multiple episodes. However, for the ones that last a couple of episodes, I’ll pinpoint my favorite moment.

I loved the Gohan filler during the Saiyan arc....it really shows Gohan's character well

The gang helping gohan fight cell always felt the most real to me, like I remember being shocked when I first learned it wasn't canon. I'd adds a ton of extra emotion to their battle and we never see the weaker characters stand up to the big guys much after this.
The whole Gohan and the Robot section made me realize something ... that it also makes Gohan's reaction to the death of Android 16 quite a bit more impactful.

That snake chick taking a revolver and blowing her own head off is one of the darkest funny moments in the series. I like the invisible ship arc too, it expanded the role of Frieza in the galaxy before we got to meet Frieza himself.
Wait, Princess Snake shot herself? I can't remember that. Though I haven't seen that episode since I was a kid.

Goku would have to die again tho lol or they could have Beerus and Whiz take Goku and Vegeta to Grand Kai's palace and retcon it too where the afterlife fighters scale properly with DBS power levels kinda like Broly! I would love too see Grand Kai freaking out that Beerus is there he was actually a pretty good character from the fillers would definitely be entertaining to see him again. They could even retcon Olibu and have him have a long lost Human Transformation that the human characters can learn to catch up a little bit!

Honestly, filler in Dragon Ball was way better handled than the filler found in most anime that were out at the time, and even those out today.

My favorite filler story would definetly be the Other World Tournament one. Its nice how Toei had added nice little touches and characters like these to make the story more interesting.
I was expecting Fake Namek to be on this list... but it's not "good filler". Not by any stretch. The entire arc feels like damn fever dream.
If this was a list of the worst filler moments, no doubt that would have been here.
That filler episode that preceded it wasn't too bad though. The one with that random ship of dudes who had been fucked over by Frieza or something. Shit I can actually barely remember the plot of that one now, but I know I found it watchable as a kid.
I thought the "Fake Namek" filler was a brilliant concept, just poorly executed. And to that end, you can't exactly blame them. Especially since half their audience already knows what real Namek was like, they couldn't run with it properly. Plus, as being filler it was hard to add significance to the whole story.
If DBZ was a wholly original show with writers who got to really plan things out in a meaningful way, "Fake Namek" could have been a brilliant addition that both teased with viewer's expectations and alluded to things that would come; it could have been a thematic parallel to the next story arc that foreshadowed key events.
Really what was the worst thing about the fake Namek was how it wasted what could have been a fantastic addition to the story.

Does anyone else think it's sad how the Fake Namek was significantly more elaborate and imaginative than the real one, which was just wastelands and water?
The Garlic Jr. Saga kicked ass. It was nice to see what the Z Warriors could accomplish without Goku around and it didn't disappoint.

The worst filler is filler that takes itself seriously. Keep filler lighthearted and funny and people tend to like it, it's a nice breather in between long, serious arcs.

I'm really glad the anime had Tien, Krillin and Piccolo involved vs Cell. It meant a lot, which is not something you can say for most filler.
You should do a top five original Dragon Ball filler moments. I feel like I'm one of the only people to have ever watched those. feels kinda like lost content because no one ever mentions them.
I really want to talk about the OG Dragon Ball filler. I had a poll last year on what should be the next Dragon Ball themed video and that was one of the choices, but it wasn't the winner, so it's been a video I'd been slowly working on in the background.

Thanks for bringing up the cell saga stuff where they help gohan against cell. There is so much evidence that the anime team cares more about dragonball than toriyama.
John Ryan your not wrong, if anything the anime staff just take more notes for consistency.
@John Ryan Not very harsh when you consider that he totally checked out of this manga after the Frieza saga. It's pretty well known that Toriyama did NOT want to continue DBZ and instead wanted to work on other projects, but it was way too popular and studio wanted him to continue. As a result, every saga started to become redundant and repetitive with some minor, and some major inconsistencies. All stemming from a guy who was, for the lack of a better word, "forced" to continue to write something he no longer wanted to.

I haven't read the manga beyond the World Martial Arts Tournament with Goku and Piccolo. Surprised to learn that the anime made up all the shit with the Kais during the Buu saga.
The filler during Vegita saga really fleshed out the characters - rare, good filler.
Thank you for doing this list. There’s not many people willing to make videos about Dragonball Z filler. My favorite filler from Z is The one scene where Goku blacks out from being drowned by Freeza And has a vision Of The devastation freeza will cause if he doesn’t win the battle

Piccolo's are available in Xenoverse 2 if you weren't aware.
I never saw those Launch fillers and this explains why. I just remember her showing up in two seconds in the first episode Z and giving energy to Goku's Spirit Bomb in the Buu Saga.
Even in english I'm pretty sure there was atleast one scene where she is in a bar during the saiyan saga.

My number 1 is easily the other world tournament I would've loved a full arc but sadly it wasn't although it was still an amazing part of the show and goku vs pikkon is one of my favourite fights in Dragon ball
garlic jr. the other world tournament the pre cell games family time focused goku gohan fillers the post buu arc fillers and the filler moments in the time chamber and gohans training with piccolo are all fillers I liked..they can stay..the bad ones are the pre namek ones the bulma as ginyu ones cause that could of been 1 episode and been fine but they drag that joke out way to long the post freeza garlic jr. fillers aka driving ep and the the z warriors training pre saiyans and fighting the ginyu force are lame the buu fillers with satan are trash and so is princess snake..im sorry..gohan in high school fighting crime sucks too...
We can all agree the goku and piccolo driving episode is the best anime filler episode of all time! Comedic gold!
Dragon Ball has some really good filler because Toriyama is pretty bad in writting stuff inbetween timeskips. I feel the Saiyan Saga Filler for Z did a really good job in teaching guys who train under god how terrifying the upcoming threat is. Meanwhile we see Gohan learning the importance to get stronger as well as him and Piccolo bonding, really selling you on that both care for each other and that Piccolo would die for him.
Gohan and the Robot was a relationship Gohan really needed with 16 to justify him becoming Super Saiyan 2.
The otherworld tournament is basically a better version of Dragon Ball Super's U6 arc.
The driving episode is the best episode of the Cell Saga and why Dragon Ball Kai will never be as good.
It's very disappointing that most of the Majin Vegeta fight is filler and there is barely anything in the manga. Rumors claim that Piccolo suppose to be evil again, even tho it makes no sense. So if the fight were just this short, it really wouldn't matter either way.
I loved the episode where Tao Pai Pai teamed up with the manager of that afro guy Goku beat with 3 punches in the Tien Saga. It was cute to see the henchmen trying to help him despite the condition, but Goku decided to not take it because of giving his word. What a honest guy.
The Majin Vegeta filler stuff is so disappointing to me since I loved the first half of the Buu Arc a lot and it gives me less justification when I make a case for it being just as good as the Cell Arc since I do like to acknowledge what was strictly manga canon, even though it's just my subjective analysis. The whole Babidi plotline got me hooked as a kid and still entertains me. I like that they kept basically all the filler of the fight in Kai so people who choose to watch DBZ that way will still see everything that fight had to offer.
My favorite is easily the Garlic Jr. Saga. It was another taste of them setting Gohan up to be the savior of Earth.

Remember the Bulma episodes on Namek? So filler. While watching the DBZ Abridged Episodes they hint at the filler but mostly gloss over them.
It's a nice way to say: "We know it's there and if you like it, that's cool, but we're not gonna waste time on them unless they can be made funnier."
That's my take on why they do it anyway.

I love the driving test. and I don't remember the Launch scenes in DBZ at all.
Maybe because those were cut/censored.
I like how at least the robot filler sets a precedent for Android 16 (ya know besides Eighter being a G in the OG DB).
Also, my head canon for Launch is that she didn't end up as a truck driver, thats her diner/line cook attire because she started a restaurant using ingredients from Tiens farm. If you notice her outfit has food items on it

The saiyans from the past against Krillen, Tien, Chaozu and Yamcha is pretty cool
I love how the driving episode is such an iconic moment of Dragon Ball that it got carried over into a main quest mission in the Dragon Ball Z Kakarot video game.
DB/DBZ is the only series in which I actually really enjoyed almost all the filler episodes, and I think it makes the whole show that much stronger.

1:40 Logically the greater gravity on King Kai's planet made it so the Ginyu Force wouldn't be nearly as strong as on Namek.

there were so many scenes here i didnt even know werent in the manga and i think kost of them are clear improvements over the source material.
The only episodes that deserve to be canon are The Strangest Robot and A Girl Named Lime, and if you disagree I’ll tell your kids you spit in their Halloween candy

Alot of Z filler helped tell a larger story. That's one reason I enjoy GT so much. It was filler but a sequel to the ANIME. Hell the ending of the Baby Saga relied on the super divine water from the Garlic Jr Saga

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the stuff with King Vegeta and Bardock in the Frieza saga filler? That added so much dramatic tension and stakes to the conflict. I couldn't imagine watching the Frieza saga without those flashbacks
That was a good filler! I don't remember if Bardock was in that Flashback or just in the TV special and Kai, but I liked those moments and enjoy when they can expand the lore visually without contradicting anything.
Bardock wasn't in the same scene as King Vegeta, but he was shown in another flashback a few episodes later. 90% sure it was the episode where Vegeta died.
filler has the some of the most precious and greatest moments in dbz. If you dont watch the filler and connect with the characters how can you be a true fan?

Man, I don't think I ever saw some of these, but it's great when filler bothers to flesh things out. Princess Snake is also fun because she's very "Journey to the West," and therefore very Dragon Ball Classic.

celebrations with gohan is mine...I really like the dynamic of goku as a father husband friend to gohan chi chi and krillin and even son in law to ox king..its adorable...you feel that family vibe form them even with a friend there because its krillin specific it works even better than when goku is around his friends in a group...its so intimate...just them all hanging out one last time chilling having fun..its totally anime only and is there to make goku less like a douche for staying dead and give is fans some closure with him and his family...its the kind of character stuff im sure toriyama appreciated the filler added to his story that sadly couldn't have moments like that in fear it would spoil the twist in the manga..im sure he came up with the themes of those eps or approved them...we kind of need that before gokus death..or else I would be so pissed he just died for 7 years
idk if it counts but there is filler content that's only in dbz KAI and it's somewhat of a music video. in the final battle against kid buu a song and more scenes were added and it's eyecandy and eargasmic
