  • So everyone's been asking for my opinion on the new movie, Dragon Ball Super: Broly. And so, I've decided to give it to you. Modern DB has set a pretty low bar, but is this at least better than Resurrection "F"? Oh, sweet baby Kakarrotto, you'd better believe it is!

    Freeza in this movie is Dr. Eggman. He’s there, and hes the main villain/rival of our hero, but hes bringing in this game/movie specific new enemy/obstacle for the hero to overcome. and the game/movie treats Dr. Freezaman as still being a serious threat while also making them comedic and it being obvious the hero could defeat him for good in an instant if they tried
    also as far as Gogeta is concerned... its a problem with fusion existing. If the Fusion dance exists, theres a complete loss of tension in fights because even ignoring the fact that obviously the good guys are gonna win, even in universe goku and vegeta arent REALLY taking a fight seriously when they could fuse at any point. Theres no downside to fusing. At least with something like SSJ3 you can understand that if you use it and dont win youve burned out a lot of your ki. So while I have no desire to see Vegito/Gogeta anymore, I want them to give me a *good* reason why fusion isnt being used.

      Imo I think a cool scenario would have been if their initial potara fusion had some sort of lasting effect on their spirit? Or that Vegeta's speech was driven by his new understanding of Goku having fused with him, however the consequences of continually fusing is that eventually their individualities dissolve or something to that effect?

    I think the lack of Broly's agency that you mention could be blamed on the characterization of Goku and Vegeta here. Broly has nothing to really bounce off of when it comes to these two. Vegeta's lack of interest in the past means he lacks in anything other than Broly's power. He doesn't care about Broly's heritage, Broly's connection to planet Vegeta, or Broly's place in the universe as a surviving Saiyan. Vegeta ends up caring more about Universe 6 Saiyans than Broly.
    And Goku, Goku just cares about fighting. He comes off as caring and interested towards the end, but he is less interested in friendship and more interested in protecting his fighting "investment". Toriyama has this horrible knack of making his characters less interesting over time by simply making them less interested in the world.

    • @tiablue9106
      @tiablue9106 5 лет назад +17

      Yeah, that also tied into the problem with the flashbacks. If the effects of Goku and Vegeta’s pasts on them in the present was emphasized/compared to Broly’s, it could’ve been neat. Like, Goku brings up how many bad guys have threatened the Earth, but he doesn’t mention that Vegeta was one of them, or that (to his knowledge) he was supposed to be one of them. It could’ve shown Broly that he could change too...or something :0

      Belart Wright Occult Gaming nah you can’t blame that on goku or Vegeta, even when Broly is with cheelai and lemmo he doesn’t really say or do anything thing, we don’t even know what he actually wants out of life or his opinions about the people around him. My biggest issue with this movie is that they didn’t really improve Broly they just changed him and I truly believe that you could make a compelling character out that old version, new Broly kinda got written into a disappointing future

      @@prl4122 This may be a strange or unpopular opinion, but I actually like the original Broly and his movie over this new one. I'm not a Broly fanboy or anything, but that one just seemed more engaging and complete as a character, at least in his 1st movie. He had some nice lines IMO. So I agree that this new Broly wasn't much of an improvement. I thought I would like new Broly more. I did have much more sympathy for him, but like Lance said, that character seemed to just disappear when the fighting started and was replaced with something far less interesting than New and Old Broly. New Broly didn't get a chance to really do much of anything.
      That's why I blame Goku and Vegeta. The fighting centered around them and yet they had no real chemistry with Broly. Frieza and even Whis seemed to have more chemistry in my eyes, likely due to their personalities. Broly had more to do when playing off them in his Berserker state. At that point he was a blank character, but that's exactly why the protagonists need to carry the fight and Goku & Vegeta just didn't do that for me.

    • @tiablue9106
      @tiablue9106 5 лет назад +13

      honestly that’s why I didn’t like his death. Frieza’s acting was funny and all, but it would’ve been better/easier to laugh at for me at least if they made Paragus completely evil or something. (which, ironically, was what I feared they would do, but didn’t) For someone so crucial to the first chunk of the movie who showed real character, he went out p unceremoniously and was ultimately just a trigger for Broly. Then he is never mentioned again :T

    Broly definitely had a character in this movie; they just never went far enough in defining it by giving him any real agency. He appears to have the capacity for emotional traits beyond complete blankness and RRGH SMASH which is all the original Broly was, so that alone makes the difference. The original Broly has more of a connection to Goku, but if it's a really fantastically stupid connection it doesn't hold too much weight to me, so this Broly is light years ahead in being meaningful. Completely agree about how there needed to be better structure to the movie though. The fight was uninteresting because it didn't mean anything, but arguably this is true for almost all of the DB movies, as compared to the series.

    • @prl4122
      @prl4122 5 лет назад +1

      Forward Synthesis what is that character tho? The current depictions of Broly have been Broly smash but in movie 8 he was way smarter and self aware of what he was doing so i feel like if he didn’t exist in a 40 min movie he would have way more of an interesting and expansive character arc than new Broly just because we at least knew where the old one stood and what he hated even if it was goofy.

    • @ForwardSynthesis
      @ForwardSynthesis 5 лет назад +7

      @@prl4122 He was still one dimensional in movie 8. The problem with old Broly is that the only thing we see him express is hatred and revenge. Newer Broly has things like fond memories like a real person would have, and the dynamic between him and his father vs others is highlighted a little more by the prescence of Cheelai and Lemo. I'm not saying it's super deep or anything, but going from one of the least deep DBZ characters ever to this simple level is a step up. The only problem with new Broly is that he doesn't have a reason to go berserk initially beyond it just being in his nature, whereas old Broly had Kakkarot crying as a kid, but that reason is so dumb I don't think it matters (it's so dumb they should have played it for comedy in the original Broly movies but they seem to have played it totally straight).

The Demon King Piccolo Saga to the Vegeta fight is my favourite style of Dragon Ball and I feel like it was perfectly represented in Super: Broly while having more definition in the muscles without going way too roided out but I do admit that I have a soft spot for Tien's absolutely massive gigachad physique in The Cell Saga.

    I more or less enjoyed DBS:B, but Super in general makes me more appreciative of GT. For all its flaws, at least GT moved time forward, the characters had grown and changed, and the major plotlines tied back to the consequences of things that had come before. Super gets most of its all mileage from shallow fan service (All the characters you know and love exist in a comfortably marketable limbo!) or introducing some colorful yet forgettable punching bags (i.e. the Bleach model of storytelling).

I had a couple big problems with it, but not enough to make me outright dislike it. I tend to be lenient when it comes to DB movies (and I guess movies in general), it’s just Toriyama’s involvement that made me question more things than I think I normally would...
    I’ve thought for a while that DB should just stick to movies/specials from now on bc they rly have nowhere to go from where they are now and the cinema seems to be the only place Toei wants to spend money on it. Fuck the “canon”, just give me an action adventure film every couple years, and you’ll be back in my good graces

    There was a time when DB had so much emotion. Characters really broke down, literally sometimes. Blood and pain was in there. Consequences that lasted and took their toll. Yes there was always comedy, but there was tragedy too. That's what's been practically removed from current DBS stuff. Broly had the potential to, but they did stop the emotional weight once they started fighting and then it became a manic mixture of action and some gags. The world was falling apart and it looked amazing, but that's about what it boils down to in the end.

      @@Evilriku13 I don't see what's bad about death losing its meaning. People act like it takes away the stakes if you can wish people back to life, but think about it: if Frieza kills Krillin, they can't just bring him back with the Dragon Balls right away, because Frieza will stop them. So they have to beat Frieza first... and Krillin isn't around anymore to help them do it. The stakes are higher with the Dragon Balls, not lower. The only alternatives are that you give characters plot armor, or you kill characters for cheap shock value, and I think both of those are bad ideas and I like Dragon Ball's idea better. In my opinion one of the most tense fights in Dragon Ball is when the Z Fighters went against Dabura, who had the power to turn people to stone. Even though I knew that they could easily be turned back to normal if Dabura was killed, that made it more tense because I wanted Dabura's victims to be saved, and I was worried whenever someone fought Dabura if they'd be turned to stone next. So many Dragon Ball fans repeat this same complaint about death having no meaning, but I feel like none of them have really questioned this idea.

    You've said pretty much every problem I had with this movie. It has so many ideas that it doesn't expand upon, making the movie feel incomplete. I mean, for audience members who aren't particularly familiar the franchise, like my Dad when he saw it with me, those little bits that may have not fit with the Broli thing as a whole were helpful in introducing the concept of the Saiyans and Freeza to them. We as old fans who have read the manga and watched the anime, it wasn't super necessary, but it does have value in the movie, I feel.

    The way people judge Dragon Ball is incredibly interesting to me. To me, Dragon Ball has always been pure entertainment. I watch Dragon Ball, I feel GOOD. I don't really think about it, I just feel the vibe Dragon Ball gives off. I think it's probably the most entertaining, feel good, and badass show around. But does it have an intricate story or characters? Nah. Does it even have the best writing? It's very spotty. But I don't look for that stuff in Dragon Ball, and I genuinely don't understand why other people do when Dragon Ball has honestly never been much different. Gaggy, off the wall fun with serious moments that enhance it. I don't understand why grown men hold a show like this under such scrutiny.

    I honestly think the animation and fighting are overcompensating for the movie's quality from a storytelling stand point. It felt like nothing of importance really happened other than re-introducing Broly and introducing new characters whom may or may not get utilized in the future.
    I frankly didn't care too much for Broly because he's basically just a caveman that lost some monster that I have no emotional attachment towards. The little development he got didn't really amount to anything. Honestly, wasn't Broly's appeal to be "BROLY STRONG, ME SMASH!"? I'd much rather have him be *purely* that than Broly with a semblence of humanity and the story not following up on that and returning to the former. It leaves me blue balled.
    Freeza pulling a Commander Red was funny, although another side of me hates how that moment highlights how Freeza is a more comedic character now, but I blame RoF and Super for ruining him first. Freeza's a meme now, yay.
    The fight itself... wasn't even interesting honestly. It overstays it's welcome and while the great animation is nice and all, it just starts to all blend together. Dragon Ball fights are very lame ever since they started to do nothing but power-up, punch and blast. There's nothing that differentiates this fight from any other fight that features nothing but those 3 things. Fights would be better if more techniques were used, like the Mafuuba or Taiyo-ken. No, stuff like the Big Bang Attack or Masenko don't count, they're ordinary generic Ki blasts. There's nothing that differentiates a Kamehameha from a Final Flash and you know it.
    I don't know, just introduce new *abilities* to make fights more interesting and not just "Lol omg look how much stronker he is now". Fights look no more impressive now than they did on Namek, so stop prioritizing power over technique or else it'll continue to just be the same.
    Oh and Gogeta... yeah he exists.... ok. I didn't care. He had less screentime than Chaozu but returned for some reason. Whatever. I've said it before and i'll say it once more. Fusion is *terribly* utilized. I don't like Vegetto, Gotenks or Gogeta.
    Well that's my short rundown and my opinions. I honestly couldn't be bothered to talk about this movie in detail, I don't really care. Would I watch it again? Not really. Although I can say this for most Dragon Ball movies.

    Accurate review, an enjoyable film but it has problems. I would call it the "Buu Arc" of the Super films. Also as of now I am going to use the word "Broli" instead, I never noticed it as an option but I think it looks cooler.
    I would guess you having sympathy for Paragus is not an accident. In the original Broli movie there is a sympathetic angle in Paragus, I just think this new movie just makes this more explicit. Still though, I do have problems with what they did with Broli's father. What bothers me is that Paragus agrees with King Vegeta's original assessment of Broli, that he is just an uncontrollable monster. I find this a bit dark, Paragus should have realized his parenting is what messed Broli up, using his son as a tool for revenge. Paragus needs proper redemption. I get that Saiyans are not perfect but it would work this one time.

    In regards to why King Vegeta freaked out about Broly being in that spot, I believe that Broly had been put up on the same level as people who were high above him in social/military status. I remember one of the characters present commenting that Paragus was "only" a particular rank, implying it wasn't considered high enough to be there

  • @daddyGbaby
    @daddyGbaby 5 лет назад +4

    I think paragus didnt so much love his son but just had pride in him much like king vegeta, (and goku) he saw his son simply for his combat potential and not for his personality or feelings. Due to that fact that sayian babies were aggressive by nature the shock collar would have still been used on him. I think in the end paragus was simply treating broly like an animal or pet more than a son for his entire life. perhaps thats why cheelai reacted they way she did.
    I see this new broly more like dog in terms of personality always loyal, never even considering a life outside his fathers control and even when proposed the latter he rejects it.
    the greatest sin for broly is that paragus death had zeros to no effect on his developement.
    old broly is better though

    Hey Mistare! I've been waiting for this video for a while now! I met Geekdom at the premiere and was really hoping to see you there too.
    15:30 I felt the point of the flashback scenes were to build up the ties between each of the Saiyans and their father's. Ultimately something about how Vegeta and Broly eventually choose to do the opposite of what their father's set out for them (become the prince of a planet and just be a fighting machine). I definitely agree with your earlier video about Dragon Ball Minus and feel that had they made the original Bardock Special canon here in this case, this theme would've been tied to the story even more strongly with Goku becoming one of the strongest warriors in the universe; something not expected by his father.
    18:50 Yes I definitely wanted more. Goku and Vegeta should have lost to the point of being broken during the ice segment forcing them back on Bulma's ship to regroup for a scene reacting to Broly's existence. At the same time, Broly's lack of control persists and you should see him really suffer with regaining his humanity.
    24:02 Agree heavily with this point
    30:10 I suppose my initial impression with enjoying this film had heavily to do with this one scene and how Gokou felt more Gokou than he had in years since Super. I really want them to continue with this type of characterization whenever they bring the show back.
    30:58 Appropriate amount of Freeza being an asshole. They even jump cut between their mouths to connect the scene between Bulma and Freeza. Purely brilliant.
    36:02 I was actually introduced to Dragon Ball because Battle of Gods came out in 2014. I'm really thankful that one got me to start on the series from the very beginning.
    Keep the videos up! Your content stands out among the rest.

    Revised script idea: Broly gets separated from his father and meets up with Goku and Goten out farming. They take him in pretty much and have him over for dinner. Goten does something silly using his power and Broly thinks that Goten is about to be punished but sees Goku join in the fun with Chi-chi trying to hold back giggles. I don't know if this would add much to Brolys' story but it be a nice change of pace.

    The Goku/Vegeta fusions are possibly the most underwhelming and mishandled things in the series in my opinion. The opportunity Toei and Toriyama had with those characters, the story they could have told could have been monumental. Instead there is no growth from Goku or Vegeta and their relationship, always some weird excuse about why they defuse, always ego that gets in the way of getting the job done, etc., etc. I will forever be disappointed at the amount of absolutely wasted potential and how they used those characters as nothing more than storyless fan service.

    Great review! I agree with pretty much everything you said, but there is one thing I'd like to point out about the movie's decision to include Gogeta. For the tone of the final fight between Gogeta and Broly, it seemed to start off as the standard "Gogeta is awesome, he'll save the day!", but then quickly changed to "Oh no, Broly's really gonna die if this keeps up". Near the end of the movie, Gogeta continues to pummel Broly mercilessly, even looking pretty sinister in some of the shots, while Broly can barely defend himself. And when Gogeta prepares to finish him off with a Kamehameha, Broly appeared to have regained his senses and could only cower in fear. I'm sure there could've been a way to do that without Fusion being involved, but since Dragon Ball doesn't usually do fights where you're not sure who you're supposed to root for, I'd say it was a welcome addition. Also, about King Vegeta hating Broly, I'd assume it's because all of the babies in the nursery were labeled as Saiyan elites, which Broly was not.

    Nice to hear some real critiqe. Most people seem to over praise this movie. But hey the majority who are the ones who love the fighting and up the power etc. Yes I accept that, they are the focus, they will get the type of Dragonball they want, and now it is static, Goku and Vegeta are the two champions who will be able to fight from now on. Sad as it may be. I like this movie, I think it is good and I want to buy it digitaly later. But anyway what did I like? The history of the saiyans, I found that really intresting, I think time wise they made Friezza´s reign way shorter then one whould think but who knows what he did before getting that position of power. I love Friezza´s nany and the other guy. So if Friezza get to be this, cruel, sinister yet funny I like it. And he dose´t seem to wanna be the one to fight so he rahter take the position of commander which I like.
    I like that Bulma is more active but she is really just a Billion dollar ticket to anthing they want. I don´t like that. Makes Bulma out to be the rich woman and nothing else. Whis and Berrus I could do without, they are in this movies way to often. Sure you can say he made sure Bulma was safe but imagine how much fun it could have been with some of the others with Bulma, they run into the ship to get the Dragonball only to run into Cheelai and Lemo and they at first have a missunderstanding until they explain the situation and then run out with the Dragonballs. But I get it, even with all the money they are limited with what they can do and with that in mind I am really happy with what we got. The animation, the history, the fighting. I whould just be happy if the story and humor got more playroom like Battle of Gods.
    I do think it is bad when the fighting is non stop for almost an entire hour. Like seriously. From the trailers I thought they whould have something seperating the heroes from Broly and they whould fight again shortly after. But I guess they thought it was better just to do everything right there. But I mean sure it worked and I do not like the cliche of first fight lost, second fighting win.
    I do hope we get to see Broly and his new family but I do hope they get of that planet and do other stuff. I don´t want Goku to just go and have a private spare with Broly whenever he pleases. Oh and I am happy it is Vegeta who triggers Paragus properly this time, even if Vegeta dose´t really care haha! So nice video. I can understand the frustration of wanting Dragonball to be done and out. But to see people really wanted it to return I guess it is just to let them have fun with it. You still got the manga and all the other material you like and the new stuff. Even Dragonball minus won´t change that unless you let it.

While Toei did a better job portraying the story, so yeah Toriyama's version is canon, I'm less invested in minus than "Father of Goku" special. Knowing that elements from dragonball minus was going to be integrated in this movie already made me want to hate it coming in, I fought those feeling an acknowledge it's not a bad dragon ball movie but it's not good one either in terms of what your looking for.
    I personally don't like how dragonball super tries to instantly pair off main good guy characters with a forced relationships as soon as they're (re)introduced like future trunks and broly these characters are best when they're bachelors and not tied down in a relationship signifying the end growth for that character. It happened with gohan and then with vegeta ,their growth and intrigued as characters died when they got married although vegeta was able to pull out one last hurah thanks to being transformed into majin vegeta and rejecting his progress when he was returned to he was reduced back into a stagnant character.

    Really excellent review, the only thing I disagreed with was the action being boring. I'm pretty biased as I'm a huge action junkey, but I though each separate fight had so many good character moments as well. Broly continually growing into his Saiyan instincts, Vegeta's complete lack of hesitation in trying to kill a threat to his home, and most of all Goku's attempted diplomacy check against Broly.
    But like you said, it needed at least 30 minutes of screen-time devoted to building up the connection between the three main Saiyans as well as any extra scenes with Che Lai and Lemo.
    I really, really loved this movie but Super as a whole probably lowered my standards to such a degree that even adequate storytelling seems like a masterpiece. Either way, nice video.

    While I HATE fusions in Dragon Ball in general, I liked that they used it here to give us - and the characters - a break from all the fighting.
    I had a headache from how loud it got in the second half of the movie and when they brought up the idea of fusing, everything slowed down a bit. Of course, it didn't last long and it got even louder when they continued their fight.

    About the title/spelling discussion in the beginning: Resurrection F is actually more accurate from a translation standpoint. The title is Fukkatsu No Efu, literally: Revival - possessive particle - F. This possessive particle is also used to turn nouns into quasi-adjectives. Legendary Super Saiyan = Densetsu NO Sūpā Saiyajin. In this case adding the particle "No" has the same effect as adding -ary onto legend. Not withstanding the fact that the words would be in the wrong order to begin with, saying Revival Of F is like saying Super Saiyan Of Legend (which, granted, works in this case, but that's a coincidence :p). Revival Of F would be Efu No Fukkatsu (F's Revival). Revival and Resurrection are both valid translations btw, since the word carries multiple nuances. Making a comeback (in show-business or whatever) is also called Fukkatsu. Thought that might bring peace of mind to some people:)
