Great video! I’m happy that you pointed out how much of Rei’s character was extracted from Crystal. I’ve noticed a lot of people have said that Rei in the manga never gets angry, or yells, when that is far from the truth. It’s not as extreme as it is in the 90s anime, but it is very obvious where the 90s anime got that idea of her from. I think one thing that hinders Crystal is that they don’t even bother adapting the manga side stories. There’s a side story in the manga that fleshes out why Rei doesn’t trust men and takes place sometime after Episode 5 of Crystal I believe (when Jupiter gets introduced). I think what makes Crystal so contentious in the fandom is the fact that there were so many times they could make the definitive Sailor Moon, and they just didn’t. The 90s pacing may of been slow a lot, but it was being created at the same exact time as the manga (often times even being ahead of where the manga was). These filler episodes may have been a lot, but they do a lot with showing us extra character moments. The story of the 90s anime is not that good (in my opinion), but these filler episodes are what made so many people like that version. Crystal doesn’t add extra character episodes, nor does it make a lot of changes that benefit the story (many I can think of hinder it). Crystal Season 3 and Cosmos are definitely some of the best in the series, and I wished it was like this since the beginning. I think Crystal as its own is okay, but when you think about the circumstances surrounding it, it shouldn’t have turned out to be just okay. Like I said before, you made a rlly great video here and you’ve definitely earned a new subscriber!! Excited to see more stuff ^_^
Thank you for the lovely words! And I'm so with you about the short stories! I read them for the first time last year & thought, "Damn, Crystal really should've adapted these." Such a missed opportunity!
Fun Fact: Sailor Moon's Crystal's 3rd season animation designs would later serve as the inspiration for Doki Doki Pretty Cure's international dub (Glitter Force: Doki Doki) although the original Doki Doki was released in 2013, including Star Twinkle Pretty Cure. (That's Takahashi Akira) He previously did Suite Pretty Cure too.
How did Season 3 of Crystal inspire Doki Doki’s designs when Doki Doki came out 2013 and Crystal 3 came out 2016? Even if Glitter Force Doki Doki came out later in 2017, the animation was reused from the original 2013 and just dubbed over in English.
The first Glitter Force (Smile) did have new animation for some additional ending sequences, but I don't think Doki Doki had the budget for that anymore.
@BagOfMagicFood That's RIGHT... and when I think of DokiDoki... I feel like production on the international dub possibly began in 2016... and the episode count was originally gonna be 40...
I started Sailor Moon with Crystal so it will always hold a special place in my heart. I really love the CG transformations. They're so grand and the art is glossy. I know it's not the best adaptation of SM, but I still somewhat enjoyed it. Despite that, I think it all gets worse after season 3. The movies are almost unwatchable since the characters are barely developed😢 I wish they were all like season 3
Yeah I don’t really mind the cgi transformations. But yeah Crystal isn’t my favorite adaptation and I much prefer 90’s and live action but I thought Cosmos was good. Mostly the second part because the first part was really fast paced for me.
Crystal follows the manga, the action is fun and Usagi and Mamoru's romance is well developped| cute BUT i have a few issues with it: - The CGI transformation. Pretty backgrounds but the 3D is a bit ugly and we saw under Usagi's skirt. It's more weird than cute. The OG transformations are fun and entertaining and the music is great. Theses ones are a bit boring to me 😐 - The relation between the scouts and the generals. It comes out of nowhere, was not developped AT ALL because the boys were attacked by queen baryl after they learn they were in love with Sailor Mars and her friends. It was rushed and didn't add a lot to the story 🤨I wonder why it's even a plot. - Usagi's voice is SO annoying in Crystal. In japanese, it's Hummy the cat from Suite precure; is too high and hurt my ears when she talks. I don't know how it is in english, i didn't watch dub yet. - The girls became friends too fast. In one episode, Usagi met one then imediately likes her. There's no scenes of them playing together or studying, eating in a park. It's so rushed ☹ - There's no fillers were the characters are doing funny things or spending time together; developping their friendship. That's dissapointing! It's not awful but i prefer the original anime.
When i first watch it i saw that usagi transformed into neo Queen and not a princess, so with my crazy theorys i guessed that she was already Queen after first season but only of the moon kingdom after it was rebuild, so she was like a Queen because queen serenity was dead and kingdom was there, bit they still called her princess cause it wasnt offical and sve wasnt of age
Season 1 style was great if done properly and consistently. Same as season 3. But there were very lazy drawings throughout the 3 seasons, that i felt the entire crystal reboot should have been made into 2 part movies with 90s style.
Crystal does have pacing issues and I think it’s relying on the audience to already know the characters so it can go straight into plot. This kind of show is a struggle to balance given how large the original cast is and the cast just keeps growing as the seasons go on. I would still recommend Crystal but not to first timers
To be honest, Sailor Moon orginal was the first anime I watched, so it's hard for me to look at it critically, but the original Sailor Moon is a difficult series to watch because of the old animation and filler episodes (especially for those who don't have a lot of time) Even though the Crystal doesn't have the best animations - sometimes they feel a bit plastic - it's a bit better than the original, but I say this as a member of generation z. Also, I can't watch the original anymore because I can't find the original in my language (Turkish) with subtitles (between 300-500), which is quite sad because even though they are not my favorite seasons, I would still like to watch them (if I can find time from exams-_-) And finally thanks for the subtitles so I could watch the video translated into my own language. If there were no subtitles I would not have been able to watch the video. Translated with DeepL
That "Chibi Usa - Tuxedo Mask - Sailor Moon" love triangle was problematic AF.... (I haven't read the manga or 90s anime I only have general knowledge of the series, Crystal was the first time I actually experienced it)
Yeah it’s in the manga. It’s weird AF there too. I kind of understand what they were going for, but it definitely wasn’t execute well (I think the whole Black Moon arc is underdeveloped). I think if they leaned heavier into how mentally messed up Chibi-usa is being 900 years old but being stuck in a child’s body, it would make more sense (not right just more sense). She’s kept isolated in the palace, she can’t make friends because they always grow up and leave her, and her father is literally the only man she knows.
@@Usagi393 I mean... it is typical phase for little children to be "in love" with their mother or father but as you said 900 years old and the black moon transformation took it to whole new Targaryen level shit :)
@@Usagi393I think Chibiusa's whole "900 year old child" thing would've been less dumb if she was like 25 or something. Why does she have to be that old to justify a time travel arc and her not growing up like everyone else?
to be fair crystal changed a few things that I think actually demaged the story, especially in the first season. Taking away all the Inner senshi`s wins in the first season, in favor of giving us senshi x shitennou romance which was HORRIBLE. I am actually really pissed at how the writers took away Venus killing Beryl, because she has ABSOLUTELY no accomplishments after this in the series, so it does hurt her characterisation, and it makes her look, and all the inner senshi look incredibly weak in comparison, which is horrible, considering they are supposed to be Sailor Moon`s protectors. In the manga, they were pretty strong, atleast in the first story arc.
Those are great points about the inner senshi! I hadn't thought about how it made them look weak, but you're right. I've been doing a re read of the manga & yeah, they come across a lot better there. Shame Crystal decided to focus on the shitennou romance nonsense instead.
@@chrissyj yeah, to be fair I didn`t had much of an issue with the rest of crystal, but this change in the first story arc ruined crystal for me and left a very soar spot. if there was something that put me off from the 90`s anime, is how non of the girls were ever allowed to win a fight without Sailor Moon`s help (except in the first 2 seasons, and Jupiter in one episode in S) but to be honest, and I wished crystal will change that, but its even worst than it was in the 90`s anime. I am glad the inners were atleast allowed to defeat the Amazon trio in eternal, but thats it, they defeated 4 minor enemy during the WHOLE show. whereas in the manga they had all the key players from the dark kingdom down, without Sailor Moon`s help, except Metalia of course whom only Sailor Moon can seal away with the silver crystal. so in the manga atleast, the inner senshi does come off as way stronger than Sailor Moon in the first story arc. then from the second story arc (after Usagi proved herself by sealing away Metalia) it is clear that due to the silver crystal`s power Usagi is waaaaay more powerful than all the other sailor. Sailor Moon Crystal is a great example of how a 1 to 1 adaptation isn’t always the best option. It mostly adapted one chapter per episode and didn’t attempt to adapt some of the extra chapters for downtime episodes, the budget for the first two seasons was extremely cheap for a franchise as marketable as Sailor Moon, and the movies adapting the last two arcs of the manga felt more like compilation movies for a season of television than full length feature films. However, I will stand by that it is still a more worthwhile show to experience Sailor Moon for the first time than the original 90s anime. Not only are there a ton of filler episodes that make the story a bit longer than it needed to be, but the story for each season also made some changes that arguably weaken the narrative and the portrayal of the characters. On top of the Usagi/Mamoru romance being handled poorly for 2 manga canon arcs and a filler arc in between, it irks me how there are episodes in the 90s anime that portray the friendship between the Senshi, mostly the dynamic between Usagi and Rei, as so hostile and catty to the point where I’m questioning “why are they still friends?”. While more could’ve been done with Crystal be just as engaging of a show as its predecessor adaptations, it is at least a show that manages to stay consistent with the character writing and the story it’s telling.

The funniest one though was me saying that for it's fast pacing I would have rather seen it as a series of movies and was dog piled because that would be awful and yet here we are! P.S. One more fandom peeve but this one wasn't dogpile related: I genuinely genuinely hated when people would defend the animation errors by saying that "It's because its copying Naoko Takeuchi's artstyle and the style doesn't animate well" and like...... 2 things about that and it's 1.) No it does not look like the manga's art style, you can like it without trying to justify the style but it does not look like Takeuchi's style at all really... 2.) If the animated show is being drawn in a style that doesn't animate well then maybe your animated show should not be drawn in a style that does not fulfill it's medium purpose which is to be animated?
Crystal could’ve just had like 5 or more filler original episodes per season and take plots from the old anime and added it here so we could’ve flesh characters and plot points cuz even Naoko herself admits how rushed her manga was due to the publisher and Toei basically making her work non stop. Which is why she enjoyed working on the live as she took more time with it. Though of course I won’t be saying she could’ve have a better job tho cuz she could’ve, her adding way to many characters also affected the development of the inners during the rest of the arcs especially stars which is for me the worst one in the manga with how the treated the inners and even the outers. I wish they would’ve kept season 1 and 2 style and just add better animation tbh, cuz the fights were at its best on the first seasons cuz they were real time and actually showing them fighting not just use stock animation🥲.

P.S. One more fandom peeve but this one wasn't dogpile related: I genuinely genuinely hated when people would defend the animation errors by saying that "It's because its copying Naoko Takeuchi's artstyle and the style doesn't animate well" and like...... 2 things about that and it's
1.) No it does not look like the manga's art style, you can like it without trying to justify the style but it does not look like Takeuchi's style at all really...
2.) If the animated show is being drawn in a style that doesn't animate well then maybe your animated show should not be drawn in a style that does not fulfill it's medium purpose which is to be animated?
Crystal is just so disappointingly bland and boring to me :s Also the effects are not as good as they should be.
I´d love a video about the Eternal movies!
I love sailor moon shows but why crystal change storyline like all over again 😢
Crystal is a loose follow-up from the manga
What are you talking about the sailor moon crystal and the manga are mostly the same thing?
I really don't like crystal, but i have to admit that the pacing is mostly the same as the manga
