The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

God does this classic song bring back memories from my time in Vietnam. I was a 21 year old Marine Scout Dog handler attached to various infantry units in the 1st Marine Division. In between operations we would rest our dogs, and ourselves, at our compound in DaNang. We had a hooch that on occasion served us 3.2 beer every now and a traveling USO Tour would appear. Usually a Filipino band of somewhat dubious talent would put on a show. They always closed with this song. Every time they the chorus of “ we got to get out of this place” we would shouted at the top of our lungs. Many of my friends never got out of this place!
I was lucky. Wounded twice but came home in March of 69.
Enrolled in college, earned two degrees and retired in 2013 after a great career in executive positions in the chemical business.
Every time I hear this song, it takes me back to those days when life was so precious to all of us. God bless my friends who didn’t make it back. I think of them always, and I’ve tried to live my life that would make them proud.
    Semper fidelis .

I don’t know you my friend but your words of remembrance to your brothers in arms who never made it back from Vietnam hit me hard because I told one of my captains who was once a Marine in the early 2000, and survived the battles in Ramade Iraq but he lost some good friends. I said to him you are living for them and to remind us of them that they will never be forgotten!

It is often associated with war, especially Vietnam, but he is referring to the dismal North East of England during his youth when there were very few prospects. Like he says: his father slaving for so long and his hair is grey. It's the way generations of industrialised people lived. They lived in a bubble of filth, poverty and ill health. No way out was shown and very few found it. It took two world wars for the ordinary folk of England to say: enough is enough. But by then, the Establishment had already adapted and here we are.

Dumbass young audiences don’t even realize that there is no way anyone can sing and leap about like a chimpanzee on stage without getting out of breath, so they play recordings.
They’re even trying to make it mandatory to put that on the tickets for the shows. They will have to say that it is recorded music. Some have complied, yet many still don’t.

There is not going to be "Peace for all." Only Peace to those souls of Good Will. The rest go to Hell. No Peace in Hell. Bob Dylan was right: Only Trouble in infinity. Those who don't go into Eternity with God will be "Time Captives." They will not have any rest day Nor night. That is an infinite number of days & nights. It never ends. It's Infinity. Make your choice. Infinity or Eternity.

@@barbaram.7442 Autotune is an electronic device that can alter the pitch of the voice being fed into it. Unfortunately, most all musical "artists" of today use it regularly. In theory, it prevents the often embarrassing, bad notes or bad vocal pitch mistakes. Basically, it is talent in a box.

that's the same mentality that got incredible British invasion bands slaged off at the time, for having majority young audiences (like myself, who is 16). 20, 30, 40 years from now, there will be people who look at the pop music of today with the same fondness we do of this music today.

Michael Rochester Old fashioned comedy...🤔 Genuine laughter and not toilet bowl. My Grand Mother's Generation was genuine. My Grand Mother was always there for me. Unconditional, Love. They survived hell, and I do not think Eric would have caused any lasting damage to them or the Greatest, my parents. It was my Mother that bought my 45's every week at Musicland on her bowling day, downtown. She also bought my Mad Magazines. That was humor. Those days were so Eclectic, and with todays whatever they are in the moment; its they that cannot seem to handle or accept anything that deviates from their indoctrinating. Wouldn't you agree?
