In 1979 in Clearwater Florida I was at a club on Cleveland St. that isn't there any more. It was a small venue, not more than maybe 60 or so people in the audience. The M.C. introduces the next performer by only saying it was his first time on stage. In walks this old guy, looked about 80 going on a hundred. he was around six foot six inches tall and lanky. He wore a white dress shirt and a loose skinny grey tie like was popular in the 1950's. His skin was like old leather that had been left out in the rain too many times and in the sun way too long and he had tattoos he got when he was in the navy, in what was originally called The Great War. He took the stage and handed the mike to the sound guy and said he didn't need it. He sat down on the stool, the house lights dimmed and he took out his harmonica. He was right. He didn't need the mike. He belted out this song in a thundering New Orleans French accent like nothing I have heard before or since. He sang every note pitch perfect. He sang it with a thousand year old soul. The hair on my arms stood on end. Then he sang it in French. Every place where the Animals had an instrumental interlude, he accompanied himself on that harmonica deep and bluesy. He finished in English again. For about ten almost awkward seconds there was absolute silence before we all burst into applause and a standing ovation. Then, almost as though he'd been caught intruding on a private party, he quietly walked off the stage. I'd heard later that evening that he'd just gotten out of the Florida State Prison the week before and had been there since 1920. Seemed he'd stolen a pig from the wrong person. His was the absolute most authentic performance of any song I had ever heard sung by anyone. About a month later I read his obituary in the Clearwater Sun.
I never see the judges on the Voice Britain turn even thought they say how great someone is. I guess it’s their way of saying “you’re really good and you don’t need us as a singing coach

Thanks for this video. I did this song, at 17, at a spring concert in high school, fortunately with two guitarists (lead & bass) and two organists, one of whom could just rip it. They both could, but Mark was the lead. I was so nervous, when I stepped forward and adjusted the mike to be 'higher', it almost fell into the orchestra pit. And one of the most popular girls in school, who did not think much of me at all, started to point and snicker as I almost dropped it. I then focussed on her. I'm not bragging here, I could sing, and I wanted to shake her up - which I did. My pals played beautifully. I was later requested to sing this at a supper club, and dinner for the governor. It did change things for me in school, but not so much. I loved singing anywhere I could do it. I can't sing at all today, but we get old. Glad I found this. Good memories, albeit late in the evening and with wine.
I think the judges at UK were waiting for the candidate to know how to teleport right before their eyes. Because they were definitely not judging his voice performance.

what the hell is wrong with the judges for the UK? that was probably the best of all these versions -- not oversung, like the one before it, or underserved, like the one after it. and does tom jones EVER turn around first? ridiculous.
How did none of the judges turn around for UK if I was in the audience I would run and press all the buttons and run so the security doesn’t come for me
Some of the judges have been in the same room with Chuck Berry, the Beatles and Elvis Presley. Excuse them if they have a bit of high standards. I like covers. But there is a handful of songs - literally a handful - that were written and sang by the right person with the right voice and the right feeling and the right band at the right time, and any cover can only make it less. This is one of them.
This reminds me. My father used to sing this to me when I was a very small boy, so this is my Holy Song. I know absolutely everything that is to be known about it, but when I was 18-19, I performed it and people told me I was performing it wrong. That is the moment I became a man. They thought it was a song by The Animals, but I knew it wasn't.
I really shivered. The tingling went through my whole body so intensely just because of the performance of this song alone, which reminds me of hard times, poor children from falling apart families. I have a son (17) and half an hour ago I asked him warmly as a parent why he is sad, in a bad mood, lying down. He ate almost nothing and he threw the steering wheel of computer games against the wall in front of my nose and said let me go very, very angry!
I think the reason they didn’t turn is because the type of voice he has is very limiting in terms of what songs he can sing, whatever he sings that fits his voice he will completely destroy in the best way possible, but it’s a very limiting voice, and therefore harder to work with.
Maybe because it was a number 1 hit in Britain, USA and France by a band called The Animals in 1964 and were was the band from. Oh that would be Britain, so maybe they thought these glorified karaoke acts were shit compared to a real proper band.
People need to stop giving songs like this the GLEE treatment. This song was sung in a certain way, with an aggressive, slightly raspy, and slightly loud tone. Don't get emotional with your voice and press your hand against your chest like John Legend when you're singing this song, it doesn't friggin work.
Mr. Jones was sitting on the edge of his chair waiting for the power in his voice to build up... And was disappointed. Can't blame him for not turning around, they're looking for rough diamonds to polish to perfection, not polished crystals that will never be more than some fine glass.
Love this song !! Everyone has their own flair on it. The early 60's, What an explosive time for the development of folk rock and it's amazing that the Animals were right there with their fantastic contributions to the Era !! This song still sounds great at my live gigs. (pre Covid) .. and it works well on the Cruise Ship gigs as well. My Students love to learn and play this song. If you need it transposed into a different key to make it easier to sing, i can help you with that as well. Gotta Love the Classics. ;-) Thanks for posting this video. ;-)
Frijid Pink has the awesome rock guitar, that beats all the homo garlandy stuff to dust :). If you´ve got balls, you can easily do without the Eric´s vocals. I think the guitar was the Animals´ Achilles´ heel, as especially their cover of Paint It Black shows
The Last One Stole My Soul Her Voice Is So Powerful It's Amazing! I Hope She Keeps Doing What She Loves! (Which May Be Singing) I Love Your Singing Last Person!
The second girl (Melissa Janssen) and the last one (Kimberly Nichole) are perfection!😍😍😍 they gave me goosebumps. They are so beautiful!! Wow! So talented
it isn't a classic rock song, it's a classic folk song, it doesn't event have a genre itself, it doesn't have a known writter. everyone is free to do it's own interpretation
This "classic rock song" has it's first known origins to a song miners used to sing in 1905. The first published version is in 1925 as a folk song. So many people have sung this song in many different ways that there really isn't a set style to sing it. But I do agree that rock does sound better with this song.
Most people known this song from The Animals' version. But I wonder how many people know that it is actually a much older American folk song. There isn't a copywrite on this song. So, if you want to put out your own version of it, you don't have to be worried about being sued. Go for it. Do a techo version. Do a hip hop version. Do a punk version. Do a bluegrass version. Do a blues version. Do a pop version. Do your own original version.
Each and everyone of these singers are talented in the ways they sang the song, people need to understand, that no matter what song another sings, they dont want it to sound like the original, they want to give the song a punch with their own way of singing. So in conclusion, they all were just plain awesome!
Ah yes, Pip. I'll always remember this clip, it was the first episode and one of the first performances I saw on the show, and I remember thinking if Pip from south park was this talented maybe everyone wouldn't hate him. Not really connected, I know, but that's where my brain goes.
US has gotten so fucking poppy, that they have to take soothing bluesy classics, and put pop voices on it just to get a rise out of the judges. I loved the more traditional singers. The Russian guy was amazing, clearly the best.. The UK guy for example. fucking amazing. Alittle more traditional than the rest. No one fucking turned. Pisses me off.
Andre LaRue First guy was absolutely garbage. The 'up and down' singing really ruins the song, a song meant to be growing in intensity as it goes on. The first performer just made it into your generic, cliché pop song.
I used to sing this when I was just 12 in 1970 with my coco ukulele..Some sort of good influence,I became a professional songwriter in 1997.Now I am 65.Some of my original Compositions can be seen and heard at TikTok,FB,Reels, and You Tube..Thanks for this wonderful Content.God is real Great!
I’m so sick of people over singing, screaming and adding as many woo-hoos as possible, unless you have talent like that UK guy, then in that case, do anything you want. I appreciate the blues sound, but everyone tries to sound like Christine Aguilera and it’s so overdone, it’s comical.
If by "the original rock song" you mean the recording by the Animals in 1964, I'd almost have to agree. It was the first version I'd ever heard... However, you can trace the origin of this song back to17th century England. The first known recording of this was in 1933 and was called Rising Sun Blues. It was recorded by a butt load of people before The Animals did their version... they made it their own as well. Bob Dylan recorded it in 1961 for his debut album.
The guy who cut this together knows showmanship. Use your second or third strongest piece to grab em and close with your strongest material. THE LAST PERFORMANCE WAS A NUCLEAR BOMB. The UK guy should have got a turn, but they should have burned down the auditorium after the Sun Queen at the end. If y'all don't think she was the most impressive, maybe you haven't had to listen to tourists sing karaoke versions of this classic enough. He deserved a turn. She deserves a CROWN.
Luke M Murphy they had excellent vocal control. It takes a lot of skill to move through your range like that. Although it didn’t sound very tasteful, they were just trying to show off all their ability in one song. Basically, very good singing at the cost of keeping the flow of the song
@@Hudpower you kidding me? literally everyone they let through are dime a dozen pop themed singers. they never let rocky singers through in the UK cause they're fucking musical heathens. even when they do have famous rock or metal songs they always theme swap it to pop.

i can't really say any of these auditions really did the song justice. they're all fine singers, but they lack that bluesey gruffness in their voice that's needed for this song.
In the Voice UK they always expect contenders to show their individuality. Although the perfomance may be brilliant, no one will turn if it is close to original or just "cheezy" int terms of emotions
They turn when it's close to the original all the time. It have no idea what their reasoning was for not turning for number 3--were most of them just out of spots, or . . . ? What did I just see?
They should FIRED, all those UK judges. No one turned their seat, for that AWESOME performance! Unbelievable!

i agree,, its a fuckin great song and was well sung, maybe these twats are scared that someone is far superior to them at this moment in time
It's a fucking great song that we fucking wrote
The judges are always thinking about many things. He may be very talented but they still need to figure out a market for him.
No. This song needs a singer with soul, not a screamer or growler.
RIGHT!?
House of the rising Sun from the UK guy was amazing
WHOAT!!!
They didn't press a button in UK?!!?
wtf he had a great voice!
That one guy even said he was good come on guys
MisterNiceKai it proves they don't like real music
I mean, What the fuck!!!??? Again, what the fuck!!???
Exactly...this guy is amazing
Why didn't they press the button (UK)?! He was sooo good!
Damn right,
they are idiots
Actually he was the best. Best interpretation of the song and Amazing voice!
Kelly Parker they act like they didn't know it lol
Cuz it wasn't sung in a pop way, fact lmao.
The last one tho. Its like Nina Simone sings House of The Rising Sun. Amazing.
Goodness! That girl from Holland!! Gave me chills all over!!!! Love it!!!
Her and the guy from the UK were my favorites
Can we appreciate how this song transcends culture and time? How the pure raw emotion connects all all to this song
How did none of the judges turn around for UK if I was in the audience I would run and press all the buttons and run so the security doesn’t come for me
Reem Said-al-naief 🤣🤣🤣
Some of the judges have been in the same room with Chuck Berry, the Beatles and Elvis Presley. Excuse them if they have a bit of high standards.
I like covers. But there is a handful of songs - literally a handful - that were written and sang by the right person with the right voice and the right feeling and the right band at the right time,
and any cover can only make it less.
This is one of them.
I think his rendition was the better of the lot.
@@nikoskabbadias lol
@@nikoskabbadias the animals version is a cover technically. Way better than the originals though
I really appreciated Russia and UK, both didn't damage my point of view of the music
BurnBoolean facts
Me quedo con la versión de la Voz Rusia 👍🏾😎
@@77tallgeese gracias, same xD
The UK guy was amazing how did he not get anyone to turn?
Huh, never noticed. He does.
The Russian guy should definitely sing some guns and roses. He'd totally kill it
he did sang some song of guns&roses
he's amazing right? whenever he sings a song(no matte wich) he always nails it
moviebuff1941 He also sings led zeppelin song he is really good
Yeah
The screaming parts yes.
Not sure about the more melodic parts though.
I really shivered. The tingling went through my whole body so intensely just because of the performance of this song alone, which reminds me of hard times, poor children from falling apart families. I have a son (17) and half an hour ago I asked him warmly as a parent why he is sad, in a bad mood, lying down. He ate almost nothing and he threw the steering wheel of computer games against the wall in front of my nose and said let me go very, very angry!
tf is wrong with UK's judges
Wisnu Wardhana they turned all together in the last second
@@samojako3432 no they didn’t
I think the reason they didn’t turn is because the type of voice he has is very limiting in terms of what songs he can sing, whatever he sings that fits his voice he will completely destroy in the best way possible, but it’s a very limiting voice, and therefore harder to work with.
Maybe because it was a number 1 hit in Britain, USA and France by a band called The Animals in 1964 and were was the band from. Oh that would be Britain, so maybe they thought these glorified karaoke acts were shit compared to a real proper band.
@@1969JohnnyM That's not only an improper opinion but also the shittiest idea I've ever heard.
People need to stop giving songs like this the GLEE treatment. This song was sung in a certain way, with an aggressive, slightly raspy, and slightly loud tone. Don't get emotional with your voice and press your hand against your chest like John Legend when you're singing this song, it doesn't friggin work.
I agree, it makes me sick when people turn rock legendary songs into fucking pop or r&b tunes.
Kaylasa JaguarStar yes! Glad I'm not alone.
Sky Cat mhm same here
Kaylasa JaguarStar couldn't agree more
lmao the Glee treatment, so accurate
The UK one was awesome! i don't get how NONE of them turned around!!
"Very good" still noone turned...fuckers afraid of someone better than them.
Mr. Jones was sitting on the edge of his chair waiting for the power in his voice to build up... And was disappointed. Can't blame him for not turning around, they're looking for rough diamonds to polish to perfection, not polished crystals that will never be more than some fine glass.
SUCK
squach623 !!!!! Succ
Paragon of Growth At least ONE of the judges in Portugal had common sense not to pick the lady who sucked
Gotta Love the Classics. ;-) Thanks for posting this video. ;-)
unfortunatly in the UK buttons are in service mode...
i felt so fkn bad i mean he did good fk them ! all
With guys like Sadiq Khan in power you need guns more than you need buttons. Maybe microscopes to find those small Brit cojones over there...
None of them fucked it up just Eric burden set unbelievably high standards that any cover seems poor
*Burdon*
Frijid Pink has the awesome rock guitar, that beats all the homo garlandy stuff to dust :). If you´ve got balls, you can easily do without the Eric´s vocals. I think the guitar was the Animals´ Achilles´ heel, as especially their cover of Paint It Black shows
George Brannon yes I love Eric's version so much more than the Animals'
Russian guy is taking the roll .. they must put his pic as the album's cover
Wow! So talented
The guy in the UK killed it
Hahaha, over sing ang kanta na house of the rising sun, dapat nag kukwento, at may sama ng loob bf kunti at may lungkot.
Each person has their own strengths but stop turning a classic rock song into a pop song
What are you gonna do? Cry?
Why? I mean, I like the rock version better, but why can't people who like pop have their own pop version?
@@frikativos exactly
it isn't a classic rock song, it's a classic folk song, it doesn't event have a genre itself, it doesn't have a known writter. everyone is free to do it's own interpretation
This "classic rock song" has it's first known origins to a song miners used to sing in 1905. The first published version is in 1925 as a folk song. So many people have sung this song in many different ways that there really isn't a set style to sing it. But I do agree that rock does sound better with this song.
UK guy was amazing. The judges really took the blind audition to a deaf audition too.
Do your own original version.
mekkio77 - It was an English folk song originally. Southerners picked up the song and added "New Orleans" later.
mekkio77 the animals 👎, but Geordie 👍
Mike S the animals one is great wdym
good ta know
Can't believe they didn't push their buttons with the UK guy
Each and everyone of these singers are talented in the ways they sang the song, people need to understand, that no matter what song another sings, they dont want it to sound like the original, they want to give the song a punch with their own way of singing. So in conclusion, they all were just plain awesome!
the voice serves the song, not the other way around
The last one! She's totally killing it 😱🤩 Amazing!
she took it to church!
Crazy to think they let her out of wakanda for the show
Definitely killed it!
HOW DID ONLY ONE JUDGE TURN FOR THE PHILLIPINES GIRL & NONE FOR THE UK GUY??!!!! >:|
Everyone was AMAZING here, GOSH!! **w**
judges are most likely so used to hearing power in this songs notes. where the uk guy sang it well. that power wasnt there
Cause the whole basis of the show is to pick someone who is good at singing but not great so they can work on them he was already perfect.
yeah why she was way off key
+Tommy-boy ̖́- They know when they hear a one hit wonder. They want someone consistent in style so that they know what their working with too
+Tommy-boy ̖́- The girl sang from the soul you could tell this song ment alot to her.
The first guy is the most photogenic person I've ever seen.
Friggin incredible!
Ah yes, Pip. I'll always remember this clip, it was the first episode and one of the first performances I saw on the show, and I remember thinking if Pip from south park was this talented maybe everyone wouldn't hate him. Not really connected, I know, but that's where my brain goes.
Albert Kotze omg omg omg omg I agree to
US has gotten so fucking poppy, that they have to take soothing bluesy classics, and put pop voices on it just to get a rise out of the judges. I loved the more traditional singers. The Russian guy was amazing, clearly the best.. The UK guy for example. fucking amazing. Alittle more traditional than the rest. No one fucking turned. Pisses me off.
UK guy was best. the russian guy was too breathy. andreas kümmert would have killed it, though.
Andre LaRue First guy was absolutely garbage. The 'up and down' singing really ruins the song, a song meant to be growing in intensity as it goes on. The first performer just made it into your generic, cliché pop song.
Have to correct you, that guy from Russian Voice is actually French.
Not worried about whether he was french or russian. He was on the Russian voice. That's all I knew.
He did really well, anyways.
@kim
If you didn't know. The original song was pretty breathy.
Increíble Matt Eaves, me encanta su voz. Nadie se dio la vuelta, no puedo entenderlo
That last woman was amazing. She has such a distinct voice
wtf is wrong with UK judges
Holland’s performance near the beginning is freaking 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I used to sing this when I was just 12 in 1970 with my coco ukulele..Some sort of good influence,I became a professional songwriter in 1997.Now I am 65.Some of my original Compositions can be seen and heard at TikTok,FB,Reels, and You Tube..Thanks for this wonderful Content.God is real Great!
3:38 What was she waiting for? A heart attack?
I’m so sick of people over singing, screaming and adding as many woo-hoos as possible, unless you have talent like that UK guy, then in that case, do anything you want. I appreciate the blues sound, but everyone tries to sound like Christine Aguilera and it’s so overdone, it’s comical.
knowledgetracker you should listen to Bob dylan's version
exactly
knowledgetracker Many don't seem to realize how annoying too much ad libbing is.
Completely agree
Enrique Olguin just heard it! Lol!
I guess the russian guy's voice was vibrating at the right frequency.
The last one tho :o fr they all did great on their own way, love it.
They ruined the song, good voice, but I hate how they tried make it into a pop song, the rock song is WAY BETTER
exaaaaaaaaaaaaactly man
If by "the original rock song" you mean the recording by the Animals in 1964, I'd almost have to agree. It was the first version I'd ever heard... However, you can trace the origin of this song back to17th century England. The first known recording of this was in 1933 and was called Rising Sun Blues. It was recorded by a butt load of people before The Animals did their version... they made it their own as well. Bob Dylan recorded it in 1961 for his debut album.
agree with you
True
Leadbelly played this song while his wife sang it long before the Animals did it.
No one can beat cover of that Russian guy. His voice is too awesome.
Yeah, that's right. God bless Russia! 💣💥🇷🇺💪
Can we just take a minute to appreciate that first one
He fuckin sucked, what are you talking about?

The guy who cut this together knows showmanship. Use your second or third strongest piece to grab em and close with your strongest material. THE LAST PERFORMANCE WAS A NUCLEAR BOMB. The UK guy should have got a turn, but they should have burned down the auditorium after the Sun Queen at the end.
If y'all don't think she was the most impressive, maybe you haven't had to listen to tourists sing karaoke versions of this classic enough.
He deserved a turn.
She deserves a CROWN.
UK Judges were deaf
All the faces Tom Jones was pulling as if someone had told him not to press but he really wanted to.
Yep, its the impression i got as well it seems fishy.

Ariana Dashi That's not that good, too much ups and downs.
Luke M Murphy they had excellent vocal control. It takes a lot of skill to move through your range like that. Although it didn’t sound very tasteful, they were just trying to show off all their ability in one song. Basically, very good singing at the cost of keeping the flow of the song
rename this... how to fuck up a legendary song
Yep, the Eric Burden's performance is undoubtedly much much better, they just fcking ruin the song
None of them fucked it up.
They all tried to change the notes n' shit even though they were already perfect
Who ever decided these pop singers should try to sing a blues/rock standard ought to be bitch slapped.

nope i love new wind... but this is just fucked up... the spirit isnt there... they just wanne show how awesome/ bad their voices are

SO TRUE man totally agree ... but dont forget there arent a lot of people that can sing a so " strong " and difficult song with emotion as well ..
The third guy was amazing, c'mon. Best "the voice" version that I ever seen.
peirre edel was best
I mean that's a pretty high bar to set.
i can't really say any of these auditions really did the song justice. they're all fine singers, but they lack that bluesey gruffness in their voice that's needed for this song.
Would you prefer this version by Haley Reinhart?

The man from The Voice UK was very STRONG in emotions... I think the best of the playlist !!!
Why noone turned ???
JC POPPA FRESH VERY GOOD ANALYSIS !!!!!
In the Voice UK they always expect contenders to show their individuality. Although the perfomance may be brilliant, no one will turn if it is close to original or just "cheezy" int terms of emotions
the button is spoiled. They won't have turned even if I was the one who sang it.
They turn when it's close to the original all the time. It have no idea what their reasoning was for not turning for number 3--were most of them just out of spots, or . . . ? What did I just see?
