Prince Philip Death Announcement - BBC One April 9th 2021

- This is how the BBC broke the news of the death of the Duke of Edinburgh to viewers in the UK. Programming was interrupted by a black screen and a "News Report". Presenter Martine Croxall said: "We are interrupting our normal programmes to bring you an important announcement. A short while ago Buckingham Palace announced the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh." The national anthem was played as a sign of respect.
Interrupted programme (at least on BBC One England) was "Paramedics on Scene".
Can you imagine how nerve-wracking this would have been? It takes a lot of courage and skill to deliver even a few lines like this. Well done, Martine!
Yes, it can be a career defining moment.
She also reported that an announcement from South Africa would come soon in 2013 (Nelson Mandela's death)
@@howardstephens5003 is it shite!. Its her job. Any other newscaster could've done that!
@@lardy70s why do the stupid always have to resort to foul language to express themselves
She will rehearse regularly
The hairs on the back of my neck go up when they interrupt normal telly and news report goes up, especially when it’s followed by the national anthem.
I had this happen to me today but it was about covid with our state having like 400 cases today, I got chills for a second until I saw covid
Did it happen today with you?
Mine too.
And it naturally causes one to stand and sing the national anthem when it is played.
@@thesmithersy
I did that when Elizabeth died last year and Woody.EXE had just started his reign that night so it was going to hit him. He still got chills one year on yesterday and I made a personal statement last night for his achievement over the past 12 months whilst paying my tribute to Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. I can’t believe I’ve been Woody.EXE’s Queen for a year
It's the way they say "This is BBC News from London" - they have to say the same on all major events, the death of a Royal, the death of a sitting PM, and on outbreak of nuclear war. Chilling stuff.
I doubt it will happen but do you reckon they would say the same if a terrorist attack on the scale of 9/11 ever took place in the UK as well?
@@jackcrawford3921 I heard they interrupted regular programming during the 2017 London Bridge attack, so they’d probably say something similar
@@useroftheinternet8362 yes I remember that one as I watched it live (unlike this one) but ok
@@jackcrawford3921 They said it when Lockerbie,Dunblane, Princess Dianas death, the London 7/7 attacks, The Manchester Arena bombing and the Grenfell Tower fire happened. This is why the BBC is trusted, respected and much loved. It has an established reputation for truth unlike modern sources.
@@MrChrisalf2004 yeah, I’ve seen the news flashes for Lockerbie, Diana, and the Manchester arena bombing - the newsflash they did for 9/11 was IIRC at the end of an episode of Neighbours (as don’t forget Neighbours was on BBC 1 and not Channel 5 in those days)?
The procedure of the britisch TV stations during a death of a member of the royal family is impressive - nevertheless, it's very sad that he died
Agreed. It's very respectful, clear, and sombre. I love the touch of black they always must wear when making this sort of announcement.
theyre already planning the 1 year remembrance ceremony

Martine Croxall is the best newsreader on the BBC and this showed why.
I’m glad that idiot McCoy wasn’t around to announce it. He’d have been rolling his eyes, and shaking his head as he always did when there was a royal story. Martine was superb!

Who’s here after the death of the queen? 😢 they’re both together again

Now the queen has joined her husband....
As simple, yet elegant way to announce the death of someone important to an institution, a family, and a nation.
May he rest in peace.
Sending my deepest condolences to HM The Queen, the Royal Family, and the British people, from the Philippines.
Who's here from the death of Queen Elizabeth? Not trying to joke here, just wanted to let you know that I was saddened to have heard both news in my lifetime.
I mean unless you’re near the end of your life, chances were that you were gonna hear both in your lifetime
Genuine emotion in Martine's voice...the chances of a announcement of this magnitude in a newsreaders career are quite astronomical odds none the less Martine executed this announcement with outstanding professionalism, dignity and deepest respect and sincerely condolences to the royal family even to the point of shedding tears and a highly quivering voice all add to the historical announcement by Martine and the BBC. ..RIP PRINCE PHILIP.....the UK'S Grandad to everyone
Was she professional or did you hear emotion in her voice? Either she was dispassionate as she ought, or she was unprofessional. Unless feigning emotion is the example of her professionalism.
It's her job at the end of the day ffs!.
You can see it in her face 😢
The worst part is you hear her voice trembling when she breathes in, I admire her to keep strong while announcing that news
I am so very sorry for your loss England. Seventy three years of marriage is a rare feat.

I just love Martine Croxall. She is the pinnacle of professional. Such a good fit for the BBC
Is Martine a common name in the UK?
Poor Martine you could see she was doing her upmost to hold back tears because as a reporter it must be both nerve-wracking and sad to deliver the news to the nation
How you maintained your composure is beyond me... BRAVO and great reporting!!!!!!!!!!!! Sincerely, Scott in Texas
Actually, the UK broadcasters (both TV and radio) have been preparing these announcements beforehand (when I mean beforehand, they prepare it for decades in case something might happen). That way they are able to relay the information in a professional manner.
@@bluebluesky3170 How do you know she won't read this?

This has to absolutely suck for King Charles. In about an 18 month time frame, he has to bury both of his parents. Would suck for just about anyone.
I'm not taking anything away from that. But to think your not going to be doing the same is foolish. If nothing tragic happens every child is going to outlive there parents. Every parent hope's and prays there children will out live them. No parent wants to bury their child.

@@jeanbeget Germany too
I had get a call from a german relation of the DOE- and put on BBC 4- and 4 Minutes later they interrupted the programm, Im a touched about the presenter: she had the most watched announcement of her careeer and was very nervous, maybe touched- but then her professionaliy came back. rest in Peace HRH. You did a amazing job.
She looks like she is struggling to hold it together
Perhaps nerves won't have helped the emotions either with the realisation that, as the on-duty news reader on the BBC News Channel at the time, that it was she who would be fronting Operation Forth Bridge (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_and_funeral_of_Prince_Philip,_Duke_of_Edinburgh ) and that after having re-read the Buckingham Palace Statement she had nothing else to say but had all BBC TV viewers at the time watching. Presumably at the end of the clip the AutoCue finally kicked in with the pre-prepared script which will have been ready to go for years and off she went.
I'm fairly sure she is a stand-in journalist who just happened to be holding the fort on BBC News for a few hours that morning at the time the news broke, rather than a senior newsreader who would have rehearsed such an event. The poor lady does seem rather terrified to be breaking such important news, but this is probably the single most important broadcast she has ever done. I did notice they brought in Huw Edwards to take over in under an hour, (although he was inexplicably replaced with Rita Chakrabati for one hour during the afternoon (possibly to give him the supper break that working time regulations entitles him to)), but I'm guessing he had been on late shift duties this week, as he did, at least initially, look like he hadn't had enough sleep.
@@MrDannyDetail She is actually very much a regular on the BBC News Channel at all times if day and night. But, yes they did bring in the big guns pretty quickly. Don't think Huw Edwards normally does Fridays so he was probably at home and certainly deserved an hour off in the middle of an otherwise ten hour live broadcast for which he'd had no preparation time!
@@MrDannyDetail yea i noticed huw coming on too. it was because Martine had been on the news channel for a few hours and likely needed a break so she could get to grips with telling an entire nation of his death
They have to fake cry when it is a “sad” thing. like yeah it is sad but we all knew it was coming he was 99 .he was gonna go sooner or later
RIP to HRH Prince Philip. My thoughts and prayers to the Royal Family and to the British people.
At least the queen meets him again in Heaven...
He was the prince consort, but he will always have been a king to me. R.I.P HRH prince Philip from cape Breton island, Canada!
*THIS IS THE BBC FROM LONDON*
Now together forever🇬🇧🖤
Now Elizabeth and Philip are together for eternity !
Not only is she holding back the tears but she has obviously been crying before hand, truly exceptional that she managed to hold it together. I know I was devastated when I learnt of the passing of HRH.
I wonder what he would think if he lived to see Charles became the King
It's gonna be weird seeing this kind of official state broadcast when Prince Andrew dies
The British and the world will don’t care. The only deaths in the British royal family the world has cared or cares today or will care in the future, is the death of lady Diana in 1997, the death of PRINCESS Margaret and Queen Mum in 2002, the death of Prince Philip, the future death of the Queen, the death of Charles and camilla, the death of Princess Anne and the death of the children and grand children of Prince Charles, and the others memebers of the British roayl family we will don’t care.
It’s heartbreaking with every royal but it’s going to be worse for Princess Anne
17 months later here we are again
To think that I’ll be reigning alongside Woody.EXE 16 months later absolutely stuns me. Almost a year on and we’re both coping pretty well
Goosebumps. Thank you for being a companion to HM the Queen and allowing her to lead this remarkable country through moments of happiness and triumph as well as the most trying and difficult episodes in modern times.
Her red eyes and emotional voice echoed a nations shock.
Probably two emotions running through her head there
1-She’s said that he’s died
2-She’s thinking oh shit we’ve practiced this so much and now I’m the one doing the real thing!
Handled it well though
And she thought "I think I've had enough. I'm done." A lot of people who were married at least 50 years often pass shortly after their spouse. My own grandparents went out like that. My grandmother died first and about 90 days later, my grandfather died
You can hear the shaking in her voice.🙁
You could see that she was trying to hold in her tears. She did a great job
They're just actors, they're told to look like they're about to cry for effect
@@plantpoweredpear3688 I beg your pardon? This isn’t North Korea…
@@peterweatherley7669 just hear me out, news presenters have to tell horrible news all the time, murders, child murders and other atrocities, you don't see them cry because they're good at controlling their emotions
The fact you see the news presenters close to tears in this video is because she's been told to act that way for effect.
It's not North Korea , you're right, but the way we treat the royals is a bit cultish, not as much as other places but still
What if it was Huw Edwards announcing the initial news of the death of the most important man in Britain. Philip's death was inevitable but if only he lived a few more months to celebrate his 100th birthday.
He was done when he announced the death of the Queen.
Also I don't know how true this is, but I'm sure I read somewhere that the head journalist at the BBC told their colleagues that Forth Bridge was down (Forth Bridge was the codeword for the death of the Duke of Edinburgh) and that this time it was not a drill
what you said is likely true because because he often rehearse for events such as this including having dark clothing on standby if this should happen which is what happened here

When the national anthem starts playing, you know it's bad news.
I am not a believer in the B.B.C. in principal . But i give this woman credit for sincerity which is a value very much missing today.
What a stupid comment. The BBC is a broadcasting service for the nation, not a religion to "believe in".
I know this post is about Prince Philip but forgive me for pointing out that the BBC would enjoy a better reputation had it more presenters like Martine Croxall.

And he wasn’t even British: he was Greek-Danish IIRC.
One of Prince Philip's closest friends of many years gave a strong hint about how Philip actually died. To protect his dignity I won't reproduce it here.
Philip was on his way out, yes, but it seems the end was actually very sudden and not quite expected so soon and at that time. His family weren't with him when it happened and the Queen was asleep.
Allegedly.
I remember being asleep when Philip died that early morning but then my sister rushed into my room full of heartbreak because she knew Prince Philip died and she never wanted to tell me the news but she did
