As a Reason 11 owner, I appreciated the video Jeff. However I've already become disillusioned with the pace and direction of development and now only use Reason occasionally as a plug-in to Reaper. Legitimate question, if we already use Maschine 2 with a Mk3/+ controller is Reason bringing anything new to the workflow? Judging by this video, I'm actually seeing a more hampered workflow versus chopping my samples in Maschine 2.
Hey Bronwyn, the Reason sampler doesn't bring much to the Maschine user in terms of sampling. One sweet feature on it is the ability to detect the pitch of a sample AND to tune it! That would be welcome in Maschine... There's a lot Reason needs to add to the sampler to get it to the Maschine level, but it has the potential for sure.

Hi, I have a reason 10, how can I save midi, I don't know when I export a midi file, so everything sounds like a piano. Drums and bass in reason 10 hear a nice bass, drums but when I save it all the soundtrack so only the piano sounds please help thank you.
I agree with you on implementing a way to have mimic and octorex work interchangeably and that the sequence is way outdated. I would like to ad that they should make the mixer more intuitive with the new SSL software and that they should also add slice markers to mimic in tandem with slot options.
I've been a Reason user since version 1. When version 3 came out with the Combinator I was all over the forums asking for it to be upgraded to a bigger interface because the device had so much more potential. One of the main thing I kept asking for was a digital number display, similar to the waveform selector on the subtractor, so we'd have the ability to cycle through patterns or fx presets on the Combinator, fast forward to 17 odd years later and this weekend past, I finally upgraded from Suite 11 to 12, because it was half price for £100. Disappointed is not the word. STILL NO DIGITAL SELECTOR, the most obvious feature you'd ever want for a Combinator and they've still not made it happen, while its awesome you can add extra knobs and buttons, that's all you can add, and with all the variations, they still all just do the same thing so its near pointless having so many options to perform the same task. Add to that that when you upgrade to Reason 12, despite it being touted as having 29,000 new sounds in the sound bank, thid is in fact false advertising, there are litreally no new sounds at all, bar about 20 presets in the mimic sampler. New sounds are for Reason + subscribers only it would seem. Absolute bullshit. Safe to say if I'd bought Reason 12 when the half price offer wasn't on, I'd be seeking a refund immediately. I paid £100 and I feel like I've been robbed. Worst upgrade ever ! Was really looking forward to a new combinator too but that's just nowwhere near good enough ! Last time I give them my money. Pro Tools here I come.
Thanks for the video. This may seem like a stupid question but were do I see the midi input in Reason 12? In Logic, when I press C3 on my midi keyboad, I see it indicated in the Logic transport.
Lol mimic is not ready But the ability to create UI’s for combinator is pretty cool. I’ll wait on upgrading to 12 until they provide better functionality to mimic.
I doubt rex and/or midi export from Mimic is coming. Mimic is coded using the RE SDK which doesn't support this. Dr.Rex code is integrated into/part of Reason itself (not sandboxed) as it was not made as a Rack Extension.
Useful to know, but such a poor excuse for Reason to not simply reuse the code, copy it into a new library or the RE SDK, that would be so easy. Maybe they are saving it for R13, though that would suck.
Well I am still on Reason 10. When cash was available to me I bought Ableton 11. The sound I get from Ableton is richer than what I get from Reason, maybe due to the type of algorithm that they use. Ableton...to me offers more 'bang' for the buck, though there are still somethings missing that Reason have that Ableton doesn't have like being able to correctly align the pitch in a vocal. Still Ableton's sampling ability surpasses Reason by far where unlocking Creativity is concerned.
@@jefgibbons in Reason does it work, you build a chord Progression in Scale and Chords and then you are push the button on the right : sent to midi, and now you have the midi data in the sequencer in Reason, but I think the reason rack doesn’t have this function, I have tried it out in Ableton and reason rack….., in dr octo Rex you have a small note sign in the upper left of the device to copy the midi data in your sequencer track…..
Mimic drag in the midi file a Rex is NOT coming. Because Mimic was built with the Reason SDK and it doesn't support REX. Dr Octorex is a native unit, not SDK. If they redesign the SDK they could add it but that would be a looooong ways out.
I'd love it if I could put VSTs in the rack when Reason itself was in the rack, but they said that wasn't even on the road map. Unfortunately, I think they are pricing too high and delivering too little for what they charge.
When I hear both "FREE" & "Reason +"... ...And, I think of how it's like a new TV show added to Showtime or HBO, and someone nevvvvvver calls it "Free". LOL ;-)
As a long term professional in the PC industry, the biggest problem I have with the new release is actually the graphics fix. Reason was released in 2000. Vector graphics were a well understood and in place alternative at that time. So the fact is that Reason's development team in effect "cheaped out" in going with bitmapped graphics. Then, continued to turn a blind eye to this reality for almost 20 years, as the cost and time of the - arguably inevitable - fix grew. So, my issue is, I shouldn't have to pay for their original and continued misjudgment made in developing the product. So the dearth of features outside of this fix in the new release are what is leading me to sit this one out.
I watched your Native Instrument video and started to update from Komplete 11 to 13. Then I got an email on Reasons 12 for 50%off for the annual. What is your recommendation?
Man that’s a tough call! What go you see yourself using most? You probably can imagine one of them fitting your workflow best, unless you’ve never used Reason… if not, download the demo right away and explore! They both are fantastic really, and the subscription is great for someone who hasn’t paid in the past, not so much for those of us that have already paid loads over the years!
@@jefgibbons I have 11 in both KOMPLETE and Reasons. I usually try to update every two years. What sparked my interest are the new devices in reason so I’ll try it out. Then make my decision.
I really enjoyed your take here. But I wanted to raise a point on what you said about moving loops from mimic to Dr octorex. If you wanted to move a loop into Dr octorex, why would you need to do it from mimic. It's effortless to make a rex loop out of an audio file and no changes you make to a loop in mimic would be carried over anyway to octorex anyway. It just seemed like a mute point to me, great video otherwise though.
Thanks Stuart, it’s just that everything would be self contained and wouldn’t require buying Recycle, but you’re right, not much difference to just do it in Recycle!
@@jefgibbons Thanks. I am running 4k and I have issues in Ableton with plugins either being stretched or tiny. So, I'm trying to find a solution. I'll probably connect a regular monitor and use that for plugins. In Studio One, I have no problems at all. It's great that Reason has updated their gui to accommodate higher resolution!
@@johnpaulpatton9786 Out of curiosity, what plugins are giving you issues? Are you PC or Mac? I'm on Win10 and I've never had any issues with VST3 plugins at 4k because they auto scale according to Windows or can be resized with a mouse corner grab. The only plugin that has remotely given me any issues is running Kotakt 6 as a plugin inside Ableton Live 11. The GUI is just cropped off at the bottom which hides the piano roll when I hide the explorer side pane and display the instrument full pane. What scale factor are you running your Ableton instance as? I run mine at 80% via the preference menu just so I can fit more of the Arraignment view onscreen. I believe my Windows 10 scaling setting is 300% which is recommended for 4k displays by default.
Also...have you noticed that the Reason 12 Mix Channel no longer has a programmer section (Reason 11 does)? This means you can't automate inserts in Mix Channels. Any workaround?
lol ok nice video but hm i think you need a bigger space for your mouse? your mouse needs a mouse-pad im very sensitive to that noise i cant watch this im sorry :O
Just wondering re: Mimic. Could you not "rec' source and then simply create an audio track and record the edited slices? However if the loop that you have edited can't be automatically tempo synced to the clock or metronome then that becomes more of a challenge.
@@jefgibbons I think your idea of having those samples being able to be dropped into REX is vital, as is having that "drag to track " ability added via the track icon that is currently absent. Your review has me sold on upgrading from 10. Great job.

Pro Tools here I come.
i agree about metadata hashtags for moods
do you know how to use nectar 3 with reason 12? if so can you pleeeeeaaaasssseee do a tutorial?
Thanks for the video. This may seem like a stupid question but were do I see the midi input in Reason 12? In Logic, when I press C3 on my midi keyboad, I see it indicated in the Logic transport.
My software love my music making program
Lol mimic is not ready
But the ability to create UI’s for combinator is pretty cool.
I’ll wait on upgrading to 12 until they provide better functionality to mimic.
This guy looks like Bob Saget if he were a music producer.
I doubt rex and/or midi export from Mimic is coming. Mimic is coded using the RE SDK which doesn't support this. Dr.Rex code is integrated into/part of Reason itself (not sandboxed) as it was not made as a Rack Extension.
Ahh man, that's good info, but a shame. Maybe they'll figure out a way around this?
Useful to know, but such a poor excuse for Reason to not simply reuse the code, copy it into a new library or the RE SDK, that would be so easy. Maybe they are saving it for R13, though that would suck.
Hello. Can you please provide a link to the desk you use? Thank you for the video.
It’s just a slab of Acacia wood with legs from the local hardware store!
If you use any of the Reason racks within another daw which one do you prefer to use? Live, Logic, Pro Tools or something else?
Does Reason 12 at least give you the new instruments that were in 11 suite?
Well I am still on Reason 10. When cash was available to me I bought Ableton 11. The sound I get from Ableton is richer than what I get from Reason, maybe due to the type of algorithm that they use. Ableton...to me offers more 'bang' for the buck, though there are still somethings missing that Reason have that Ableton doesn't have like being able to correctly align the pitch in a vocal. Still Ableton's sampling ability surpasses Reason by far where unlocking Creativity is concerned.
You can’t drop the midi track ( sent to midi ) from scales and chords into Cubase anymore……
Wait... remind me Chris... we WERE able to do that briefly right? That's really strange... and essential!
@@chris5375 Yeah, we need that for sure in the Chords player!
Mimic drag in the midi file a Rex is NOT coming. Because Mimic was built with the Reason SDK and it doesn't support REX. Dr Octorex is a native unit, not SDK. If they redesign the SDK they could add it but that would be a looooong ways out.
Shoot… thanks for the info!
You can work inside of Cubase like a VST....or Rewire?
Just like a vst since the reason rack plug-in that came in version 11!
I love that Reason shirt. Is it a sweater or shirt? Hpw can I get one?
It’s home made!
I'd love it if I could put VSTs in the rack when Reason itself was in the rack, but they said that wasn't even on the road map. Unfortunately, I think they are pricing too high and delivering too little for what they charge.
The video is great of course, I'm just a bit disappointed in the company.
Thanks Andy! Yeah, imagine being able to combine other synths in the combinator in the rack… that would be huge!!
but is it worth it coming from reason 9.5?
bro, is that a classic Atari or Apple in the back i see? my back up guess is Commodore Amiga
The first Mac!!
When I hear both "FREE" & "Reason +"...
...And, I think of how it's like a new TV show added to Showtime or HBO, and someone nevvvvvver calls it "Free". LOL ;-)
Just switch back to pitch mode if you want to listen to one of the multi pitch parts in solo.
I’ll try it, thanks for the tip!
Good comments B, worth sending to RS for feedback as well.
@@jefgibbons Well, might have been, 10 years ago,,,, but all is done now. Hopefully the next release has more MEAT...
Bit map grafics where the norm in 2000s with alot of games and device like win amp where is similar style grafics.
What was that link to that forum post with the favorites of the new in Reason 12 patches?
Sorry Jake, I just added it to the description!
@@jefgibbons you are the man! I was hunting to see new patches as well...you made life a lot easier for me!
Can mimic be used in Reason 11?
If you had to get rid of all of your tools except one which would you keep?
Maschine MK3! I can’t express how much I love the integration…
Since you are using a TV as a monitor, do you have issues with the resolution of plugins in Ableton?
Hi John, not at all, Ableton scales nicely and I'm not running at 4K so things aren't too tiny!
I've been using a 70" 4K display in my home studio for the past 2 years and for my aging eye site is an absolute Godsend.
I believe my Windows 10 scaling setting is 300% which is recommended for 4k displays by default.
where did u get the reason shirt
Homemade! My kid got a Cricut…
Second watch!
People got plenty of Reason to complain with their new business model. I gave up on Reason a couple generations ago.
Wow! First time I’ve heard that… no I won’t be able to unhear it… I’ll look into it ;)
Just wondering re: Mimic. Could you not "rec' source and then simply create an audio track and record the edited slices? However if the loop that you have edited can't be automatically tempo synced to the clock or metronome then that becomes more of a challenge.
You could for sure! I just want to be able to drag the slices down to a track for manipulating…
@@jefgibbons I think your idea of having those samples being able to be dropped into REX is vital, as is having that "drag to track " ability added via the track icon that is currently absent. Your review has me sold on upgrading from 10. Great job.
Reason 12 video start with Cubase.) Funny..
I tried. I really tried with Reason. 1.0 was a work of art compared to this convoluted cash-grab of a poorly designed DAW and awkward plugin. Long live Reason 5. That was the last stable version that did exactly what Reason was designed to do. Beautiful, streamlined MIDI. They’re going further and further down the rabbit hole here with flash sales right before they throat punch everyone with a pay to play model. It’s not about swimming in features, it’s about ARE YOU MAKING MUSIC? 🤦🏻♂️ I MISS THE OLD KANYE.
Ha! I hear you… every company has their barrage of updates/new instruments/new sounds… all designed to keep the cash flowing… then us youtubers have to show the newest stuff or no one cares!!! And that’s the truth… I’d love to blame the algorithm but I think it’s just human nature… 🤮 sorry. You got me on a rant! Back to making more videos and keeping that hamster wheel going… 😞
$129 for the upgrade, not on your life.
It is too high… I agree!
Stop! I like your videos but overstuffed combinators are no substitute for quality vst's.
Also combinator patches load slowly and take time to audition. Remember the Reason 9
Combi sounds collection. Garbage I loved Reason but its so frustrating. Sequencer is
so buggy and has limited zoom. Great Reason shirt though!
I hear your frustrations! But I do think the new Combi is sweet, we just need a tag based browser so we can find patches!
Good video. Lame update. Reason 11 is good enough for me.
Thanks James!
over priced like other better for far less
They should start these Reason 12 reviews by making it clear it is only available for ** Windows 10 **
I assumed as Reason 11 works on Windows 8, that this would too. It doesn't.
Thanks Chris!
