Reason 13: Much Better! But that upgrade price is steep...

  • Alright, after release I can see why people are frustrated with the upgrade price. Upgrading from the last version shouldn't cost almost half the price of the software... Plus I really didn't realize how much was actually missing from Reason 13 compared to Reason+. I will make a new video and address these issues!

@@jefgibbons Standard price for Cubase Upgrade in the US is $99 USD, but I got version 13 on sale for $69 USD. I stopped using Reason as a DAW when I bought Cubase 11. I only use Reason as a VST plugin now inside of Cubase. I originally bought Cubase because Reason Studios was so far behind it was painful to use compared to any other DAW (sad truth). From the perspective of a Reason Rack plugin user, with the 13 upgrade I'd get dark mode, a single synth and a space echo type delay for $199 USD. The value proposition is upside down at that point. Conversely, when I buy a *Cubase upgrade*, I get a *massive value* at a lower cost. Stark reality.
I started with Reason 8.5. I bought upgrades for 9, 10, the 11 Suite version they did, and then 12. I've also bought a bunch of Rack extensions from Reason Studios. All told, I'm probably $1,500 deep all things considered. Maybe more. I've been good to them, I'd say.
Because of the aforementioned value proposition deficit, I'm practically *incentivized* to skip this version to get more out of the next. There's everything to gain and nothing to lose. So, I won't be buying the Reason 13 upgrade unless they do a mid-cycle update that brings something really compelling to the table.
If mid-cycle they drop a 13.5 update with native Windows ARM support, I'd buy the upgrade so that, so I could use it with one of the new multi-day battery life laptops that are about to hit the market. *Cubase* is *already* developing native Windows ARM support. With how long it took Reason Studios to provide Native Apple silicon, I would bet they'll take forever to meet my needs with this. Actually, if I were a betting man, I'd put my money on Reason Studios not doing a mid-cycle update at all.
I don't envy their position. They can't fork Reason in two and sell the Rack plugin separately for a lower cost, because no one would buy it *just* for the DAW. Any time they update the DAW, those of us that moved onto greener pastures don't care a thing about it and only want more Instruments and effects. At the same time, anyone who uses it as a DAW beg for workflow improvements and feel raw about it when they're ignored. Reason Studios is not in a great position because they obviously don't have the resources to satisfy everyone.
It feels like Reason Studios is always on the back foot, always catching up, never pulling ahead. It's sad, because I started my journey with music with ReBirth back in the day.

As much as I appreciate Reason and its updates, it still falls short in terms of smooth graphics and detailed audio file editing. The waveforms are choppy, and the cuts and fades are mediocre at best. In comparison, LUNA and Pro Tools offer fantastic audio editing capabilities. As someone who works with both MIDI and audio, I was really hoping for an upgrade in this area. I've been in touch with the developers and discussed these updates, but unfortunately, nothing has been implemented so far.

I haven't used Reason since Reason 6, and 13 looks like a "worthy upgrade" but $199 is a bit much. Seems like the upgrade price was always around $129. I understand things eventually go up in price, and I think $149 would've been fair. But since DAWs like FL Studio have a "pay once" to obtain a lifetime license and I Logic is $199.99, they seem to be better options price wise. Maybe when the upgrade price goes on sale, I'll considering giving Reason another go... other than the price, Dope update!

The upgrade price is too high for what you actually get. Looks like they want to nudge people towards Reason+ by making regular upgrades increasingly expensive, and holding back some features for subscribers only (which are otherwise sold separately). As soon as companies get a taste of that recurring revenue, they get less and less friendly about letting people actually buy software instead of just renting it.

I remember when the ads came out in 99' for Reason and having my young mind blown at the concept. In 2000 I had a Warez version of ReBirth and tied it to my Echoplex Looper and would noodle for hours. Maybe a year or two later, I scored a cracked version of Reason and it was amazing. The era of REX files was pretty cool. Same tech today, but it's no longer a standardized file type (shout out to Korg Gadget for trying to bring it back).

Sorry to vent here but I'm _very_ pessimistic about FL Studio's future.
We used to get *cutting-edge powerhouses* like Maximus, Vocodex, Harmor, Sytrus... some _hidden gems_ like Morphine, Ogun or Drumpad....
In comparison to that, a chord generator (do artists not feel insulted by the deeply personal music-writing process being replaced with a "generator"?), a Splice clone sample subscription service (FL Cloud), a preset machine that _locks you out_ of the internal controls (FLEX), _redundant_ substractive synths (Kepler does not bring much to the table if you already have Sawer, GMS, Wasp, Wasp XT, Simsynth, Poizone, 3xOSC etc and a chorus plugin you feel me?), slapping a _free_ AI model onto a menu... don't seem like compelling updates to me.
The "free life time model" has resulted in updates being more shallow each time, in my humble opinion...

I've been a Reason user since version 2.5, but I stopped at version 11. I love the CV and audio routing capabilities offered by the DAW version (which can't be done when using it as a VST Rack). However, I haven't upgraded to version 12 and I'm unsure about upgrading to version 13 (regardless of the price) because in 2024 it's not possible to have such an archaic MIDI management. Direct routing from the MIDI out of VSTs like InstaComposer or Scaler to the MIDI in of VST or Rack Extension synths isn't possible. Nowadays, the market for MIDI generators is rich (thanks in part to artificial intelligence), and Reason Studio's are preventing their users from accessing all those delights. Not to mention MPE management. I've had a couple of MPE devices for 4 years and there's no way to use them to their full potential when working in Reason.

On paper it seems like a good DAW. In fact, it is a different story.
In 2024, having to connect cables and more cables is already more of a hassle than a solution. There are other DAWs that make life easier, and get straight to the point. We want to compose, and not have to deal with miles of cables and this 2005 way of working.
    It's still a toy.
    More cumbersome every time, yes.

My biggest gripe with Reason Studios is not just the upgrade price, or the fact that they removed the favorites for devices..
..it’s the fact that they never upgrade the devices that are already in the software.
I guess this goes against the business model of offering substantial improvements that most users would appreciate.
