- This newest version, Reason 11.2 brings with it a free new Player called Beatmap... a great way to generate midi drum grooves. It also brings MIDI out from the Rack into your DAW! This means all of the device functionality is now available in the rack. Great update to already great software!

Disclosure: I am not paid to make these videos, but Reason Studios did provide me the software to test out.

Seriously, how could you ever get excited about any other DAW after watching videos like this ! As a newbie to Reason I can't wait to see what the future brings. It's the only DAW that gets my pulse rate up to 138 BPM and more !
“In his latest video, Jef Gibbons demonstrates the ever expanding accessibility of Reason rack effects, with the clear and concise informative delivery that we have come to expect from this astute presenter. First Class.”
Has to be the best explained Reason video I have seen, thank you so much.
Thanks Gerald!
The info came on thursday morning and in the afternoon, you already had this video online. You're just insane. :D
Wonderfully talented and your ease of explaining complex things is lovely.
Reason is getting really interesting 🤔❤️
I agree!
@@jefgibbons well you know drag & drop is more convenient Reason has an excellent workflow but certainly not interesting i would say outdated
@@phosphore7991 Outdated how?
I love this. SO many new workflow possibilities.
Did not think players was possible to use in cubase. I appreciate the clear and informative tutorials. TY kindly Mr Gibbons!
that matrix sequencer back in the 2004 was golden !!! brings back memories
I loved it!! Many sequencer accidents that ended up sounding great!
Scooping this up asap. Was not aware of the advancements reason has made. A plug in......
Man your studio set up is gorgeous 👍🏽
Thanks Orlando!
As a long time Reason user that's switching to Cubase 11 Pro I love that Reason introduced the Reason Rack. Now I can bring a large part of Reason with me to Cubase.
Love this.. just got a new setup and want to finally put my Cubase 9.5 to use... now is the perfect opportunity, and I'm learning a lot!
Right on, good to hear!
@@jefgibbons would love maybe a video about the basics of using Reason in Cubase or just other DAWs in general? I've used Reason since 4, but have failed to integrate Cubase... With the vst mode I really want to finally get into it... Maybe a basic workflow, your go to plug-ins, and approach?
@@jefgibbons also fantastic content... You have a new sub! 👍🏾
Seriously, not ONE comment on that GIGANTIC flat screen monitor? That's insane!!! :-)
Excellent video my friend. You just earned a sub!
Thanks! Much appreciated!
damn. software does all the creativity stuff for you with ease! nice.
I have been waiting on technology to get to a point for a randomizer of this caliber. Makes creating music
Fun and not a chore and the midi data ability is the cherry on top.
Ableton + Reason Racks = Pure Love
Amen to your last words in this excellent video.
Reason need to support 4k hidpi...the quality of the racks will look amazing
Totally Agree !
Agreed!!!
IIRC, that’s just a switch they need to throw in the back end of the GUI toolkit they have. When you (or they) build a Rack Extension, you submit 3D geometry data that their GUI renders into the pixels you see onscreen; so they - in principle - should be able to just tell it to render at 2x the pixels.
@@darkwinter6028 switch or not need to be a option..reasons waaaaayyyy behind on alot
Awesome lesson. I have Reason 10 but wasn’t hesitant. You opened my eyes and mind into the possibilities. They should have named it Reasons Unleashed.
Well-explained and comprehensive approach to the Reason's players. Thx
Excellent vid, thx very much Jeff, that Beatmap thing is indeed really awesome !
Wow Reason Studio is steppin up their game. I didn't think we would see changes like this for at least another year. I hope they make the reason rack separate from the DAW.
I was shocked to see midi out this soon!
Thanks Jef! This tutorial was a wealth of knowledge!! Do you have a video on How to use the Reason MIDI OUT to control Hardware?
Nice video, Jef. I was looking for some direction regarding Beatmap, and I came across your video. I've subscribed!
Very handy. Thank you for the nice tutorials.
Recycle was my first rexafication
Hi, great video. I have a question for you. What brand is your monitor display and what size is it? It looks super clear.
excellent AV!!!
Next level
Wat een onbeschoft mooie studio!
I've upgraded my Reason10 to 11.2 just today....I'll try Beatmap with Machine ASAP ! Thanks !
Hey Jef! Ryan here with Reason Studios. Great vid!! But I'm actually wanting to ask you a question you might get a lot. WHERE did you get that awesome desk???? :)
Ryan! I love your stuff man!! Big fan... the desk is just an acacia slab from our local Canadian Rona store with legs... but tbh it’s very warped... not as functional as it is beautiful!
@@jefgibbons Aha... I've recently gotten sucked into a rabbit hole of watching woodworking videos about planers, jointers, and making epoxy resin "river" tables... so I'm all geeked out now on "live edge" tables like that. Looks great on camera, even if you do need to shim it with matchbooks underneath! :)
I'm amazed that you're still using those ancient Yorkville monitors.
Just a quick word, you won't see the midi rack unless you have configured a midi interface in the reason preference. I was looking all over for the midi rack, which only popped up when I configured for midi.
Thanks Chris!
Great video!
Great video Jeff! I learned a ton of stuff... Thank you!
I can't wait to find the time to play with Reason. Feels like the perfect software for someone who wants to make melodies but does not know how to play the keyboard like me :-)
Random question, have you ever tried the Seaboard ? I saw this on youtube yesterday and it looks like an amazing instrument! Like the cross of a synth with a drum pad and some cord instrument... I think i want one! Do you know anything about it?
I've just played with it at the store! It's got learning curve I'm sure, but they're pretty sweet!
@@jefgibbons Sweet! I think it could be the perfect instrument for me and it looks so expressive it's insane... I've seen a few videos on youtube that blew my mind like the one where Marco Parisi plays Purple Rain lead guitar with it and the way Neon Vines play with it also is just ridiculous.
Do you think it might be a good idea to learn to play the keyboard with this seeing how I never learned to play keyboard yet? Or you think it would be best to start with a classic keyboard (less dimensions) before trying this? I can't find none in store here, probably a good thing I'm afraid I would buy it on the spot!
We've always had the ability to export MIDI from REX player as MIDI, it's been available for ages. What we don't have is in Reason preferences under sync, the ability to send MIDI clock to multiple MIDI out ports at once, meaning we have to allocate only one port to MIDI clock, this sucks as we then have to daisy chain or split again outside.
Hi, you changed your monitors to Adam TVx? thoughts? Nice run down on Reason!
HELL. YES.
Nice.
Best time ever to be making music on computers, even if you can't afford this there are many free options to explore.
So true!
Jeff, I have been meaning to shoot a message to you and tell about a cool little converter for those maschine expansion packs. If you haven't seen it already. It's called Kit maker. It will make the expansions into new kits for use in other daws. Check it out.
Super simple. Plus you will still have the original's for maschine . Worth the 40.00 bucks.
Thanks for the tip... definitely checking this out!!!
Great video, Jeff. How can you record midi notes into Logic Pro x from beat map reason rack plugin? Please help.
Jef is to maschine like John Bohnam is to Led Zeppelin.
Nice Break down on Beat Map. BTW 12:25 sound like the drums from the song When The Levee Breaks by Led Zepplin.
Was listening to zep recently... osmosis!
Danke für das Geile Video
Can get Beat Map map midi going into Cubase, but when Beat Map is connected to another reason device, such as Kong, there is no longer any midi going out into Cubase any more.. it seems ?
Hey Jef, great video, always love and appreciate your content! I've had no trouble using Beat Map to control and send midi performances to track using internal Cubase drum modules such as Groove Agent but for the life of me I CANNOT get it to send Kong performances to track... any suggestions regarding routing? Cheers from Australia!
Super
.Great Vid. I just wanna know if I can use shit like scaler its midi out. within Reason (Standalone.)@
how can you copy the midi notes onto the sequencer for the dr rex for reason +
Great stuff. still trying to find how to get it out in to logic
My players in Reason 11lite and 11 are locked to the lD8 piano . This does not happen in Reason 10. This happend before and stopped after a long while. Does anyone else
have this problem. I do not see any online video fixes for this problem.
Man, this is awesome! I just bought it last night and installed it this morning. I use Bitwig, but I had Reason 10 before and I really wanted to use all of the Reason Rack, Players, and so on with Bitwig. My only regret is not upgrading sooner. The Reason players and sequencers plus the other synths I have there can now be used interchangeably in Bitwig which is making it a lot easier to just sit down and create. The Bitwig modulators work with the Reason controls. It's like having two DAWs to use and getting the best of both worlds since Bitwig and Reason have different mindsets on how to go about producing music. Now they are ONE.
Jeff is FINE
HOW do you do this but in Maschine when using Machine as a DAW?
What version of Cubase are you using?
Jeff - Have you tried using BeatMap inside Maschine directly? Have not had any luck getting things wired up correctly.
I haven’t got it working yet! Might try hitting up NI to see if I’m just doing something wrong...
Hi, thank you for the informative videos ! I have question you may be able to clarify: can I purchase reason 11 INTRO - and subsequently add instruments such as best map, friktion etc? Thanks in advance . M
What's the helmet looking thing on top of the monitor?
A tv! The Jvc videosphere, it doesn’t work anymore!
logic doesn't allow midi data transfer between tracks as far as i know. anyone know of a workaround to get midi data out of reason rack from the dual arp etc? thanks!!
what resolution do you use in the big screen in front of you?
Don't you have to turn off focus in maschine preferences otherwise I think you are triggering double , once via midi channel 1 and via the maschine current focus wich is the selected sound.?
Track folders, subgrouping and VST sidechain support?? Hmmm, seems like REASON is ignoring what long-time users & fans have been wanting for years once again. Fantastic! Seems the propellerhead only spins one way...the opposite.
Yep. propellerhead actually does not care about those features and made the plugin instead for the daws that already do that. They have officially stated that if you want those features you need to add something else.
Nice video! Reason is the only DAW I know out there that actually advertises on its own website INSIDE other better DAWs lol. That's crazy. Are thy going to drop the self contained DAW aspects of it and concentrate solely on VST implementation since they really don't develop for the Reason only users anymore? What a crazy change that company went though. They are really going to push this 1 finger no talent needed easy way method of producing music that is oh so popular now. A lot of peeps who have nodiea what music theory even means are gravitating towards stuff like this.
I like to think of it as a gateway to musicianship... one can only get so far using the 1 finger method. I’ve found loads of my followers are digging the music theory aspect, and I suspect that will continue to grow. As for Reason’s MO, I think they had to pivot to survive. On the surface it looks like it might hurt the Reason users, but on the contrary, it’s not only going to help them survive, but they could thrive at a time when companies like Cakewalk are collapsing. I definitely think they won’t abandon their Reason users, but they need to ride the wave of other DAW users to get to the next level. Thanks for the comments Bill!
Step function?
Remind me again what resolution you're using on you beautiful 65" TV....?
Hi Jeff, Love your content!!! I can't seem to get Beatmap to record Midi in Cubase unless I use another instrument like you did with machine. I am trying to use one of the built in Drum machines inside the reason rack and got a beat that I like...but the reason track won't record and I am at a loss....any ideas? I have record enabled, and It looks like it's recording but it's completely empty and then when I hos stop the recorded area just disappears. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
For anyone looking to get midi from the drum sequencer or other players not currently supported, check out www.audiocr.com/ -- this thing capture the midi and it's exactly what is missing. Fredrik from Reason Studios gave me this tip although he was clear that he hadn't tried it himself. I have. It works. Enjoy.
Hi Jef, could you walk us through how to update the Reason 11 plugin so it reflects the update for the main standalone? I have no idea how to do this, as nothing is mentioned anywhere (I googled a lot). I use Reaper. The plugin is still showing the older version without the MIDI OUT and the Beat Map instrument. Thanks!
Nevermind, figured it out... (Windows) you have to copy all the contents from the C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3 Reason plugin folder into your custom location (for me it's just C:\VST3)
Hi Jeff. When i load my scales and chords that midi device does not load with. I get the ID8 device instead. Any thoughts ?
The beat map thing... Another Reason Rack Device I'll never use. I'm glad they at least did MIDI Out. One thing I'll never use, one thing I'll use daily. That's the way of things, I suppose.
Yup!
Sir, tell us please, what display (inch, resolution) you using for work? And thanks for video 🤓
Hi back a few videos, I’ve got one on the tv. Samsung 7100 65”! Cheap at costco
No midi out from one reason track to another in Reason.Jo
Can't figure out how to record MIDI OUT from the Reason plugin into Reaper while hearing it... any way to do this? I can do the Record: Output (MIDI), which records the arpeggiator notes and Beat Map notes but I can't hear it until I play it back. Reaper's routing confuses the hell out of me sometimes. Thanks Jef!
Maybe this helps: a) Create a Track with Reason Rack plugin inserted on that Track and create a MIDI item on that Track. b) Create another Track and put an instrument plugin on that Track. c) Drag the Routing icon from Track a) onto Track b), disable audio send in the routing popup window. d) Choose a Player in Reason Rack, for example, the Chord Player. Now do Play in Reaper. Outcome: you will hear the MIDI item played as Chords, triggering the instrument plugin on Track b). You can then indeed record those chords, with "record midi output" function, on Track b).
Try 'Monitor track media while recording' a right click on the record button option
@@ButeSound Definitely know that (11 years using Reaper) and sadly it doesn't work, either. Thanks, though! What I'm trying to figure out is how to get the RUN pattern (Reason) to record MIDI into Reaper WHILE I'm hearing it. It works if I play anything live (can record, and hear it), but the whole purpose of the Midi Out feature is to get the actual midi notes recorded from pattern playback. If I can hear it while it's recording, then I know what I want to keep with arpeggiator exploration, and no wasted time.
@@vanhaze2000 Thank you Rob but that doesn't work either. I'm trying to get Reaper to record the Reason patterns (using Reason instruments, which I really like) when RUN is enabled (such as with Beat Map). It records them fine, but I can't hear them when they're recording. Only in playback.
@@vanhaze2000 It seems that you need two instances of Reason if you want to use the Reason instruments. One for a player/midi out device, and one for the instrument. It works as you mentioned. As long as you bypass the player track before playback. Thanks Rob!
I'm guessing you can mute parts of the drum map? If I'm seeing correctly, by turning turning the density knob full left? So if you only want a hat pattern to go with your programmed kick and snare it is possible to do achieve this?
You’ve got it!
How big is that screen Jef? 🤔

TRUE STORY
Hi Jef, I don't want to use reason as a plugin but instead just have Cubase run in sync with Reason so i can use reason to score to video.
Could you, or maybe someone else, tell me how to set that up?
I have Reason 11 Suite and Cubase 10.5.
Since the loss of rewire, I’m not sure how you’d do that!
@@jefgibbons Thanks for your fast answer. I was unaware rewire was discontinued so that clears things up.
But since i also have Reason 10, could I use that in sync with Cubase?
I have never used rewire or midi clocks before and i'm a bit confused...
It still says you have an update!
I know! It was a beta version...
😍
Not US ( As Avengers could answer.... )
I will still not upgrade until Reason 12 at this point.
My main DAW is not Live
i went from 9.5 to 11 so there was plenty of new stuff to make it worthwhile for me ;) what potential new features do forsee them introducing in 12 ?
How much is this different from Logic Pro X Drummer? Did you compare them by any chance?
I don’t use logic, thinking about getting it for stuff like this though!
and bugs ....greyed out create
Can you utilize this in maschines standalone software?
I haven’t been able to get it to work! I meant to mention that to see if anyone else has...
Midi out as a rack was a big miss - looking forward to playing.. tbh pace of video could be increased a bit - but minor point, nicely filmed.etc.
Are you serious? Wow. People have absolutely ZERO patience anymore. Just the attitude of hurry up and give me what I need. Work on that bro You'll learn much more.. or better yet, read the damn manual instead.
That’s fair, I’ve been known to watch a lot of videos at 1.5x speed!
Just make sure reason is configured to see your midi interface. You'll see the midi rack the next time reason rack is opened.
Love Reason...holding out for the verdict on BeatMap but my first few experiences were a fail. The preset beats were nonsensical and jumbled, any attempt to modify the presets resulted in more nonsense and didn't really integrate with any other drum programs like Reason Drum Kits, Addictive Drums or Kontakt. Not ready for Prime Time for me but could be user error.
For me it’s more about the complex high hats, still a bit lazy, but gets some unexpected but organic results!
At 14:33 Drum pattern...Walking on the moon....The police...Similar feel

Love your studio there, but the ergonomics is making my body ache just watching your vids. Hopefully you don't use mouse/keyboard for long stretches of time!
Thanks, I’m always up for suggestions! The main concern is looking up too much, when I’m editing I use the lower portion of the tv... but are you referring to keyboard mouse height or something?
@@jefgibbons Tough call with your setup... looks like if you could get your chair up a little higher, then something under your feet to compensate to make sure your circulation doesn't get cut off, then possibly finding a new chair with adjustable arm rests? Seems like the dangling elbows would be painful for both your wrists and back...
Is rewire still supported? I like it.
No that's gone
@@ibrellozeius2500 that sucks..I liked rewire. It was easy and quick to render midi Into audio. They should have kept both.
@@DL-1 Yeah it got replaced by the plugin and the method that came at 7.
EMI & the plugin replaced rewire
just use a version of reason that still supports rewire like 10, you can have more than one version of reason installed on your cpu!!!!
@@DjSegwon ahhh... very interesting sir.I didn't know that. It is hard to find new boxes versions of older software though.i couldn't find a version of komplete 11 anywhere.(Cheaper upgrade path.) Do you know how many computers that you can load reason onto? My desktop, laptop, e.t.c... or is it one instance per disc like native instruments software?
Why use reason having ableton?
Depends if you like using a ton of loops, ableton's strength.
Because now you can use Reason inside Ableton.
Mac or custom PC for audio and video creation?
I’m still on a 2013 Mac Pro... but it’s showing its age.... pc is starting to look enticing!
@@jefgibbons what are the specs?Macbook pro's can be expensive and awesome.Just curious.
@@DL-1 It's a Mac Pro, not the MacBook Pro, and it has 32GB Ram, 1 TB flash storage... 6 cores... still chuggs along!
@@jefgibbons that's awesome. Yeah I mixed up the name. The mac pro is very expensive. I saw a video about a $15k mac pro versus an AMD threadripper custom PC build. That started the question for me. Congratulations on being successful enough to afford one. And resuming g enough through music to pay for it. That's a blessing. Great video. I like the reason videos because I like seeing who is making professional projects with that program. I'm not back in yet. I'm just a spectator right now. But great video.
I’m a Mac user for my general computing needs, and the Mac definitely holds some advantages for audio: easier to get low latency, easier to do inter-application audio routing, Logic DAW is very attractive price/performance, MainStage is even more attractive price/performance. But I’ve built my own custom PCs as my main studio DAW platform for many years now. The advantages include: lower hardware cost to get to high performance, older software keeps working for longer (like 32bit midi apps), probably more free plugins. Some of what makes MacOS great (security & privacy) gets in the way when wanting to freely tinker. If I was going to use a single computer for everything, I’d probably choose a Mac for that. But for building a dedicated stationary studio DAW with lots of tinkering, I’ve been generally more happy on a PC. - But both platforms will also drive you crazy at times :-\
Can I use the MIDI out function in maschine?
I meant to mention that in the vid, I wasn't able to figure out how to get MIDI out of a device into a Maschine kit exclusively in Maschine. I tried a bunch of things but couldn't get it to work.
I'm not sure if I understand the question correctly. If you want to export MIDI from Maschine into your DAW, there is a export MIDI button above the grid (one for MIDI another for AUDIO export)...
But reading Jef answer I'm confused maybe you are trying to do opposite and use Reason midi out to import straight into Maschine with no DAW then I don't know if you can do that..
Sineer I want to use Reason in Maschine, especially the PLAYERS. So the midi signal should be able to transfered to Maschine.(Sorry for my poor English 😅)
Love Reason but this player is a miss
Reason 11 overpriced crap
Reason sucks
