    ok but youre so real for getting into capes comics that aren't marvel and dc. like, those guys are fine but its nice to just read something made by someone different and that isnt bound by the history they have.

    • @thegregnorton
      @thegregnorton  6 месяцев назад +2

      Your point on being bound by history is one I wish I had made in the video. I know I can pick up the start of a batman or xmen run and be fine, but it's still nice to not worry about the rest of the continuity.
      Picking up Radiant Black did sort of feel like it was for me because it didn't have the weight of decades.

    While Amber's reaction is completely believable, the thing that makes her fairly dislikeable in S1, is the complete lack of consideration for why Mark wouldnt share such a sensentive secret... On top of the fact that she just loses a lot of sympathy, when she supposedly knew "all along" that it was Mark risking his life to save her and others, yet still acted as if he abandoned them in the midst of danger, and never apologiesed for it.

    I’m gonna say this as patiently and as calmly as I can… the “lie” that you’re talking about is “Mark being Invincible”. A superhero, it’s a secret identity. I’m not expecting Amber to be perfectly ok with it but, when she says “I know” acknowledging that she knows Mark’s “other” identity. It doesn’t look good for her at all! She knew about the secret while he was fight off villains that were threatening her life and then says she’s angry about Mark abandoning her when she knows he was actually “there”. How can you not see something wrong with that? Secondly, it’s a private part of his life a very life threatening part of his life. Which is wonderfully explored in season 2. It’s something personal to him, *he* has the powers not her, he’s learning to use them, trying to make his father proud, figuring out what type of hero *he* what’s to be, it’s not about *her*. She had no right to know, they just started dating. Amber simply suffered from bad writing and she’s the biggest and possibly the only mistake in season 1. But, if you don’t see that it’s all good, I just needed to get that off my chest. Great video btw

      Hear me out, he should’ve broken up with her if he didn’t trust her. But instead he strung her along for months and continued to lie to her. “You made me feel stupid and unimportant.” THATS why she dumped him

    • @deceare4907
      @deceare4907 4 месяца назад

      @@evemitchell3442 I understand your point and agree with you for the most part, but another thing to consider is that trust comes with time, and since they weren’t very far in the relationship, it’s very understandable that he didn’t fully trust her with his secret identity. And since they started dating within pretty much one of their first interactions, there also wasn’t much time to build trust with a friendship or anything like that. Another point is that the secret identity clearly means a lot to him, since he didn’t even tell William until he found out himself, so in marks perspective it would also make sense that he doesn’t trust his girlfriend of just a couple months enough for it.

    Great review of the show. Minus the Amber shit lol I am happy The writers corrected her character in the second season. Let’s keep in mind,, Mark was a teenager. A teenager with ‘New’ extraordinary abilities. I don’t know about you,, but don’t tell all of my deepest personal business to someone when I first started dating someone. Just because I’m dating them . Something must remain private. Until i feel comfortable enough to share. Also Mark’s father was the most powerful superhero on the planet. That is not the type of secret you share with others easily. Mark did the right thing by hesitating sharing his secret with Amber. Not to mention,, Mark was going through his own personal issues. As well as working on evolving as a superhero & a young man. Also keep in mind,, Sharing your secret identity as a superhero,, puts everyone you love in danger. Mark didn’t even tell his very best friend that he has known all his life,, his secret. So why would he share it with a girl he just met at school? Do you tell someone you just started dating,, all your personal family issues and personal drama? I don’t think so. One,, you have to feel comfortable enough to share that type of information. Second,, there’s a certain level or depth of friendship, loyalty & reliability. Third,, you have to ask yourself,, ‘does this person have the ability to keep a secret’? There is a lot that a couple has to work through and build on,, like trust,, before sharing deeper (and in Mark‘s case dangerous & darker) secrets. But as I mentioned,, obviously the writers of the show realize that they created an annoying character in Amber. Because her behavior in the first season,, came off as entitled, manipulative, demanding, disrespectful, inconsiderate and gross. Thank goodness, they sprinkled a little bit of Goodwill on (helping the homeless etc.) Amber‘s character in the first season. Amber in the first season came off like a badly written soap opera character. Otherwise she would’ve been even more disliked by viewers. Because prior to that,, Amber didn’t seem like a friend at all.

      @ironicpants2651 6 месяцев назад +5

      But she expects mark to see her as the main character of his. Why would you expect someone to tell you their identity that early in a relationship that spanned a couple months? Mark had his guts ripped outside of his body and she was more worried about being lied to about it being a bus that did it. A much better and realistic confrontation would be much closer to what we got in season 2. If they broke up after that it would’ve been fine.

    • @Tyler_W
      @Tyler_W 6 месяцев назад +2

      And she publcly emasculated him to get him to confess incredibly sensitive personal information after only 5 months of dating. While Mark isn't without fault, he was actually trying to do the best he could. The idea that Amber did nothing wrong is some nonsense. She wasn't wrong for being upset that he was clearly giving her some garbage excuses, but the wag she handled it was clearly objectionable. She was being unreasonable and selfish, and unlike Mark, who actually had a good reason for keeping certain information to himself, she lied to him and gaslit him because she was mad at him. Clearly the writers agree with at least some the criticism considering the pivot to her character in season 2.

  • @Tyler_W

    This series really is fantastic. I'll never stop enjoying cape stories because I liked this stuff befoee it was cool, but I've also become very jaded with the majority comic adaptations these last few years simce Avengers: Endgame, but I am so glad that Invincible is as good as it is. The comic is fantastic in its own right and stands as a completed story that everyone even remotely interested in superhero, action, or sci-fi comics should read, but aside from its handling of Amber in season 1 (agree to disagree, your take on that was whack), you can really tell how far Robert Kurkman has evolved as a writer. It takes a lot to elicit real emotion watching something, but this show managed to do it on multiple occasions. The fact that adaptations like Invincible exist proves that the problem with comic adaptations isn't that it's a creative well run dry. The problem is that most of the people making them now suck or don't care.

    Man, the end of Invincible S1E1 fucked me up good, I knew it'd be excellent from that moment on, and I was right.
    Damn, I still haven't seen season 2, should've known there'd be spoilers in here. Eh, I'll probably forget by the time I actually get around to watching it lol
    I like The Boys, but man is it hard to watch sometimes, I've really had to hype myself up to watch it the past couple seasons, and even then I don't think I'm caught up on the latest season, and I haven't watched Gen V either.
    I can understand why the MCU turned you off the superhero genre, it has largely become basic easily-churnable nonsense, and it's hard to want to keep up anymore, but I'm glad the good stuff out there was able to bring you back.
    Anyway, excellent video as always dude! 👌I gotta catch up to S2, I have no real reason not to, I've just been watching way less of everything lately, but I'll try to get on it soon!

    you had until you brought up Amber not doing anything wrong. That is completely false. The girl literally bullied Mark's bully into giving him her number (which makes almost no sense). Then later she confessed she knew Mark was invincible before he told her, which means her guilt tripping him at the college was completely unwarranted or even any time previous to that. On top of that, she went to a party where she clearly tried to hook up with a guy and she failed to do so.

    • @gilbertorivas1017
      @gilbertorivas1017 6 месяцев назад +3

      My main response to that (right after acknowledging that the writing there is a little undercooked), is that she’s trying to hold the guy accountable. Like you can’t be a superhero and have a partner and hide that. In real life you want someone who’s honest and who can be there for you. She was annoyed that after all that time that he didn’t 1) realize that his life is too busy to juggle school and a girlfriend OR 2) at least let her know what’s up instead of letting her think he’s a flake. The writing around that was way better in season 2 but I also think they dragged the breakup a little bit but I just wanted to see more Omni man lmao

      I think you’re right and everyone’s missing the point. She’s supposed to be flawed . It’s supposed to not work. It’s meant to be eve and mark by the end . If he got with amber “what will you do in 500 years “ is kinda undercut at the end.

    Think you should also give Astro City a try, starting from the 1995 run. It's a pretty neat anthology series that kinda goes through the personal struggles of heroes (not dissimilar from how Invincible follow's Mark) as well as those of civillians, villains and other super powered bystanders.
    With there sometimes being cameos of chars from past stories, as everything culiminates into a extended fantastic universe, where you get a feel on how it is to live in the titular city.

    I believe you're misunderstanding just *why* people get upset at Amber. It's not because she was upset he was a superhero, it's that she felt Mark OWED her to tell him his *SECRET IDENTITY* as a superhero, even though...that's such a stupid reason to be upset over? First of all, Mark has only known you for a few months at most so why should you feel like you deserve to known an important secret like that, and we literally see the consequences of people knowing Mark's secret identity in season 2, which puts the people he loves and cares about in danger, aka Amber, Debbie, and Oliver. Hell, this is when they break up for real because Amber couldn't handle the dangers she might face dating Invincible.
    Then again, the writers saw the backlash and *significantly* fixed her character in season 2 imo, and they handled their breakup pretty well too. Although, I don't like how right after the breakup we've got future Eve telling Mark that she loves him, cuz this is what, a few hours in universe after they break up? It's just waaaay too soon lol

    • @thegregnorton
      @thegregnorton  6 месяцев назад +1

      I do see that, but I do think the anger at her is disproportionate to what it is. That said, I missed out on the point you mentioned, and because of that, I lost some of the nuance of the topic.
      I think the point of the Mark/Amber relationship is to be messy because relationships can be messy, especially when young. So I like all the issues because they add to the character drama of it all.
