The Crew Motorfest - PS5/Series X/S Tech Review- A Great Series Return - But Only 30FPS on Series S
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 окт 2024
- As the series' third outing The Crew Motorfest hands in a solid 60fps experience on PS5 and Series X consoles. The open world design is in the same mould as Forza Horizon, and translates well to each. However the result on the 4TF Series S console isn't up to the same standard, where all gameplay is fixed at 30fps - with issues in frame pacing and tearing to boot. Tom investigates the quality of each version.

We need more arcadey sports games like this so kudos to Ubisoft for actually trying. Gaming used to be bang full of those and snowboard/skateboard ala SSX. Something I miss very much at least
Agreed. For some reason "Arcade" has become a bad word these days... People don't know what they're missing.
Disagree strongly
@@MadX8 They are not missing anything... Because all of open world race games know to date are arcade...
Always been this way... unless some Studio step ups and bring something way different... Open World Sim Racer...
@@MadX8Seriously, people use arcade as an insult when it comes to certain games. Like not everything has to be painstakingly realistic, we also want some fun games
The current "simulator but not really" meta of racing games is pointless when they stuff the games full of driving assists to the point it needs to play itself on a controller anyway, all those detailed physical simulations get lost in the shuffle when you do that.
I want more stuff like Burnout, Burnout 3 is still a joy to play.
Some things I for sure thought would’ve been mentioned:
• The draw distance especially when flying.
• Sometimes when resuming the game from PS5 Sleep Mode, the game will be stuck at 30fps, even with Performance Mode enabled.
Don't assume DF plays like a regular user. The sleep mode thing would likely never come up for them.
ps5 draw distance is pretty bad
There's something so weird about the lighting in all Ubisoft games, I can't put my finger on it
The Division 1 (haven't played 2) looks amazing. But The Crew has always been a bit dull for sure.
@@MadX8 Yeah I always forget about The Division, those games sure do look amazing.
Most other titles do have that weird lighting I was mentioning, I think it's more visible in Far Cry 6 and the new Avatar game
@@ShadyPaperclipsI remember The Division used the Snowdrop engine, and Far Cry ran on the Dunia Engine I believe. Though it seems that avatar is using Snowdrop as well so that doesn't fully explain it.
@@bnhm1871 yeah could be an artistic choice, I just find it weird.
Like the shadows are very dark, idk how to explain
Weird that the game had 60fps on the beta on the S but not now, it worked great in the beta, maybe it will come again in a patch, classic ubisoft shenanigans
Even weirder that ubisoft are not doing anything about it

Strange that there was no talk about the broken HDR setting...It was so broken at launch that i needed to use the sRGB option. Hope it will be fixed...
i noticed video footage of options of game on video , sRGB , I thought that's an option i would have changed. An now you say this it wouldn't surprise me if HDR is messed up ,,, See for a pixel peeping channel you would have thought DF would have mentioned this like you have , An honestly on modern displays bad HDR is probably as bad as poor resolution if not strangely worse ,
Saying that it don't surprise me from DF ,,,, comparing a series X To a ps5 is like comparing same car in different colours while making shed loads of money .
BTW the one who founds Honolulu's streets on a open world racing game was Eden Games with the original Test Drive Unlimited on Xbox 360. It was for sure the best racing game at the start of X360's life cycle.
Nah, it was cool having the island to explore, but a lot of the map was samey samey, and the vehicles physics and handling were pretty poor. PGR3 looked much better and handled way better. If only they did a big open world PGR, that would have been awesome.
@@ArconaTDU1s and handling physics were okay, much better than TDU2 I thought.
Can't compare it to PGR, different type of game, which is amazing in its own right.
A lot of the team at Eden Games are now this team. The Crew has essentially been TDU this whole time.

The game indeed looks really good and much more enjoyable than FH5.
Hey Digital Foundry! Please consider doing an analysis on the new EA Sports WRC title. There is a lot of debate whether it looks on par with other modern racing games. Like many, I think it looks flat in the previews. Almost like an older game running at higher resolution, but I don’t know why. It would be really interesting to understand the true technical reasons of why it has such an appearance. Thank you.
Indeed, it looks like a game at least 5 years old. It might be the lighting that causes that outdated look. The textures look decent.
Best physics in an arcade racer I've played in a long long time. Total overhaul of Crew 2's floaty weightless physics.
That's good to hear. I heard 2 was the same as 1, which is what I'm playing (or was, until the servers stopped letting me log in), and god this is one of the worst racing games I've ever played. The physics are horrible and take forever to get used to.

Missed Tom's reviews. He needs to review more stuff when compared to the others if you ask me.
Absolutely, apart from Rich, he's the most journalistic out of them. It's flat out, unbiased facts about the game and only very slight mentions on what the game plays like. Alex is especially bad with letting his own bias slip into projects due to his love of ray-tracing...which is actually seems to be on the way out for now in gaming, it's just too expensive and most people want 60fps and higher framerate gaming, not ray-tracing at 1080p or something like that.
@@Floodsye Tom's videos also tend to be very surface level and don't go in-depth at all, unlike John's but especially compared to Alex's videos. Alex is definitely the most stern reviewer of the bunch, but I think that's a good thing.
And no, ray-tracing is not ''on the way out''. That couldn't be further from the truth. We've seen more and more titles ship with ray-tracing features every single year. As technology improves it'll only become more prevalent.
You must either play on an older mid AMD card or exclusively play on the older mid AMD GPUs in the consoles.
It's expensive, but DLSS is an absolute game changer
I love all the DF gang but Alex Rich and John are by far the best simply because they do add opinions. I like hearing them talk about what they love and don't love about a game, even beyond the tech stuff. I feel like if you just want hard specs then you should just go read the articles on Eurogamer
Oliver and Tom are good too but their videos are usually much more "raw numbers" and they tent to take a pretty middle-of-the-road stance on things. Which is fine lol it's still A+ content but the original team is in a whole other league. By far my favorite gaming channel cause of them
Tom reminds you DF is way better at objective analysis of the tech than reviewing things in the middle of a tech analysis. Linnerman's highschool poetry in 30 min videos where you only need the 10 min of tech analysis has just made any video he makes a no-go to me.

The pop in on performance mode is WAY to NOTICEABLE!
Have 40hrs in the game, its not after a while.

I do play it via Ubisoft+ on Series X and S because I wanted to try AC: Mirage as well.
Despite the performance problems in Motorfest a quite cheap Series S (bought mine used for 160 €) could be a fine addition to a PS5 for everything outside the PS ecosystem.
Series S' version has the polish of a launch title. If they added a 60 fps mode it would probably bounce around 1080p and 720p (average 900p maybe) and would be a better experience.
Since it runs at 1440p with 30 fps I am very sure that it'll do 60 fps at fullHD most of the time.
@@hassosigbjoernson5738At about 5:45 he says the Series S resolution is dynamic 1440p. At its lowest it's just above 1080p. So 60 fps might drop to about 720p, maybe 900p would be closer to the average.
Motion blur shutter speed should be much longer, especially on S since it's running at 30fps.
Edit: is there even motion blur??
A 40hz Balance mode for both consoles be a great addition, lock at 1600p for SERIES X and 1260p on SERIES S and using FSR3 would have a much better result.
Rant warning ⚠️
Ubisoft IV can't even manage 30fps. They need to sort out their vsync issues first. The way they do adaptive vsync seems to be the issue. Adaptive vsync can be a good thing but it seems Ubisoft published games on Xbox always have frame pacing issues in one mode at least.
I've also had frame pacing issues with various Ubisoft titles in-game adaptive vsync on PC in the past. It's just infuriating that they keep relying on it for their games. Just use normal vsync, at least on consoles where this thing can't be fixed by the user. These issues have gone on for many years now. Simply using regular vsync 1/2 or 1/3 for 40fps would fix the problems straight away.
40fps for series s is a great idea. Don't think I'd use it in this game on series X though as I think the image quality is acceptable at 60fps. But I'm all for options.
The resemblance to Forza Horizon, I mean, even the font choice and the checkpoint markers, is surprising to me. I stopped playing Horizon 5 a long time ago and certainly not going to play a clone. I do wish they would make a new console competitor for Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport though.
BTW there's a glitch on PS5 where on resolution mode, if you turn on VRR the game will have some kind of stutter consistently as if the game is locked to 26fps. I don't know if that's causing the stuttering you see with the xbox systems
The 30fps on Series S seems to be a bug with their VSync. See the prelaunch footage.
I really enjoyed this game even though I'm more of a sim racer.
Felt that
who is going to tell them that Hawai is a part of the USA?
I saw that overhead map using the actual game world in a user made racing game on Dreams before.

1440p and an unstable 60 fps so much for the 4k/60 future announced before the start of this gen by the console manufacturers
I'm definitely buying Motorfest for my PS5 once it goes on a good sale since it's the closest PS owners can get to Forza Horizon. It's too bad that Sony/Polyphony avoid arcade racing.
If EA would do even the most basic 4K remaster of Burnout 1-4 and Dominator I'd buy that so freaking fast. I know ost rights would be tricky. But, I'd glady take some ost over none.

We Seems to be getting diminishing returns in performance on these current Gen systems. Choices being made in hardware functions that don't really make the game look better.
No, it's that AMD sucks, their hardware is underpowered. A console using better hardware could easily be more impressive. The industry made a deal with the devil when they allowed AMD to hold a duopoly over BOTH high end consoles.
@@Wobbothe3rd😂
@@Wobbothe3rd you figure we'd be better off if Microsoft and Sony pitted Nvidia against AMD to drive up performance per $ ? I'm thinking perhaps the opposite arguement could be made in that if AMD didn't have as many Chips to make as they do perhaps the cost would be higher ?
@@Wobbothe3rdamd has been really slow to deliver on all of their software based solutions that would allow for the visuals to be pushed harder (vrr, fsr, ml upscaling, etc) and it seems like it’s really hurt the end product. Realistically we should be getting higher resolutions AND higher frame rates instead of one or the other based on the hardware. There isn’t hardly anything being done in current gen games that wasn’t already done last gen. Hell there are games from the beginning of last gen that still compare favorably in terms of visual fidelity. That hasn’t ever happened in previous generations.
@@Wobbothe3rd Not really. Console hardware being "underpowered" is just a byproduct of them not being able to keep up with PC hardware, which can easily be upgrade every year, unlike with console generations.
When the PS5 and Series X came out, they were equal to RTX 2080's in terms of GPU performance, which was faster than 90% of ALL gaming PC's at the time, when everyone was still using GTX 1060/1070 or RTX 2060/2070.

I never understand why so many Series S games are locked to 30 FPS. It has basically the same CPU, so it should be just a matter of resolution. And if you lock it to 30 with uneven frame pacing, it's just unplayable.
This has to be an optimization issue and developers not willing to put in the effort.
It was a bit of a blurry mess but it was present in the beta albeit a bit unstable. Wasn't perfect but I don't understand why it was outright removed
Absolutely. They should at least offer the option of even 720p60 for those who would prefer it in a lot of these games. Often it would be closer to 900p in many cases, and I suspect a fair amount of Series S owners are still on 1080p TVs anyway.

I'm getting both this and Forza on the series X. This year had great games
after playing horizon 5 and this, I can confidently say that this game is better. The car mechanics, graphics, map, and just overall fun factor is much better in motorfest
How well does the last gen versions hold up?
Speaking for One X is about 4K or close, looks beautiful, has the same performance bugs, but can easily be fixed. Even at 30fps it's a blast. PS5 I played the trial, meh it's just a little more colorful imo.
Why didnt they reviewed the HDR10 optiones? Far from that the Game is really fun. Hope the pop-in shadows could be patched. Because they're pop in to late for me. 😅
The Series X port whilst during regular performance it runs pretty well outside of the odd occasion, its the *stability* that becomes a huge problem.
From my experience, that particular port's netcode seems to be quite bad. I've had continuous issues from time to time to where the game just gets stuck on a long loading screen, most frequent from when either exiting the Main Stage, or when finishing a Grand Race. I've had some last for minutes on end, and its incredibly infrequent when it happens. Even once had a situation where the game got softlocked on a loading screen when trying to enter Photo Mode.
The load time issues seem to be far less frequent on PC and PS5, its just the Series X in particular. Very strange.

@@formulaic78 He followed that with "and not set in the US like the previous titles."
Shame the HDR10 / sRGB options weren't examined. So long as you have an HDR capable TV the default (sRGB) is painful but you HAVE to manually switch to HDR10, no auto detect (on my XSX anyway) and the difference is fantastic. Shame no Dolby Vision option was there.
I’m with you. I thought they would for sure analyze the HDR implementation in this game.
"A welcome gear change from the USA setting of the Crew 1 & 2" makes it sound like you don't realise Hawaii is in the USA. I assume that's not how you meant it, but that's how I heard it...

How's the handling?
they should've optimized the Series S version better, if this console can get 60 fps on cyberpunk and the witcher 3 while looking clean, it can also get 60 on a car game
It isn't 60fps on Cyberpunk is it? Runs at 30 for me
Why should it be optimised for series s? The only first party series s/x ONLY games Xbox have released to date is Redfall and Starfield and NEITHER is 60fps. If Xbox can't do it themselves, then where does this expectancy for 3rd party dev come from??? On top of that, those 2 games aren't even at PS4 levels of visuals like GOW (linear sort of game) or Horizon (open world game) and both their sequels too. Forza is their newest game.
I'm sorry but if Xbox proved it can be done easily, you would have an argument and we already saw the DF analysis of all the lies and downgrades Forza received, to get it running on both consoles too. Plus its only set on smaller tracks, its not an open world racer like The Crew.
And surprisingly, as a current gen only game, the new Forza isn't even an overly impressive looking game, like 9 year old Driveclub still looks like at times compared to most modern racers.
Err and, yet again, Cyberpunk and The Witcher 3 are last gen games, they SHOULD run at 60fps on series s.
@@Mondochiwan There is a performance mode mate.
its strictly down to devs not giving a rats ass about 'old' hardware; why they didnt just make it a 900p 60fps performance mode for the series s boggles my mind
(oh wait, i know why, because microsoft doesnt want their 'new gen' console already playing at 900p only a few years later, which is fair, but at the same time microsoft/devs need to realise that framerate>resolution when it comes to fast paced games like these)

Soo wait. On an Xbox one x It can run multiple other racing games that look better and run at a locked 4k 60fps but then theirs this game on current gen consoles that looks worse and can’t maintain a locked or even dynamic 4k 60fps? And even then it’s using FSR meaning internally it’s likely 1080p? And people aren’t calling this out? These lazy developers need to be acknowledged we paid hundreds for these consoles. I’m not supporting this. If they put it on Xbox one x now what… would it run at 540p because lack of fsr?? I’m dead.
TBH They should have called it The Crew: Ribfest.
You don't recommend a Series S for main console ?
Gameplay > fidelity. Immersion really doesn't work when you get the basis wrong. Why focus on more modes on the higher end modes if those are running like crap anyway. Give S some love
Remedy roasted the Series S for being a generation back holder. Now that we are seeing more and more current-gen games only, we’ll be really seeing how Series S will hold games back.
Fun little game I’m enjoying it on PS5 nice break from GT7 and Forza
i'm really enjoying Motorfest. it's almost literally Forza Horizon, but actually has more variety in the way of bikes & planes, etc. all set in a wonderful location. it has graphical issues for me on Series X, occasional freezing, screen tearing, blurriness, etc. depending on mode choice, but it's still a lot of fun. i do wish there were an offline mode like Horizon, as i feel that would greatly reduce the technical issues the game has.
Took you long enough 😁
You know this is still a usa setting right?
This highlights how underpowered modern consoles are. If you can't hold a solid 60fps 100% of the time in 2023, then it's a no-go for me.
Looks fun. Might scratch an itch that FH5 surprisingly didn't for me.
Funny enough same here. The last Forza Horizon I really loved was Forza Horizon 3. Hoping for a 6th episode in Japan, who knows... The Crew is a little bit worse when it comes to cars handling (I was hoping that they would focus on cars only this time but they kept their "car/boat/plane" stuff) but overall it's fun and that's all that matters.
progression in FH5 is shite... i was bored only 1 month later after its launch... then only played a bit in the later months, then dropped it at end.

Forza was literally only optimized for Xbox it’s a first party game. But yeah I guess all the pop in and stuff on horizon 5 is so much better than this game. Not.
@@Austin-l1j you think the pop-ins in Forza makes it worse than this unoptimized mess? Clueless...
@@vandammage1747 nah don’t forget about the fps drops in the tiny little cities they have on forza, but yeah you are gonna sit here and act like forza is wel optimized when it’s just as badly optimized at this is if not worse at launch and let’s not forget they’ve had two years to fix it while this game just came out. “CLueLeSS….”
@@Austin-l1j you must be slow. Forza Horizon 5 was dynamic 4K60 at launch with better visuals than this.
That rendertarget alone is 2.25x more demanding. On top of that you have better assets, lighting, physics, everything. It's basically worlds apart yet you think it's the same🤣
No it doesn't lol it looks much better than horizon 5 on pc even at 1440p
Nice video. I played the trial but fps was bad
it looks decent to me but id definitely put it in my upscaled xbox 360 game category with the forza games
Very impressed with the PC edition. Its a fun racer and is far cleaner looking than the Forza reboot!!! Arcady racers are fun, soundtracks, random event choice and keep racing fun and open to all. Decent game, big improvements over the previous versions which were not terrible. Love the setting of the game! So much colour and vibrancy!
Hawaii is a US State though.
Think the game has a bug that won’t let u play it after the trial is up even tho u bought the game
I’ve tried reinstalling and everything and still nothing and no help from support for days
Didn't mention the HDR issues
