God of War Ragnarok - What Is The MYSTERY BEHIND THE MASK?

  • Before God of War Ragnarok launched, many of us had an idea in our heads of how its story would go, and how it would conclude the series' Norse saga. As is often the case with hugely popular story-driven franchises, theories were a dime a dozen about more than a few unresolved plot threads.
Sure enough, some of those theories turned out to be accurate- but it's fair to say that in some of its biggest and most pivotal moments, God of War Ragnarok defies expectations. From beginning to end, its plot keeps finding ways to unfold in ways that we don't see coming, and introduces several major elements that define the narrative's flow in fundamental ways.

I want to help answer half of these questions no one seems to know. The story answers half of these during the trip to ironwood and everyone misses the answers.
    1. First of all the mask is a direct link to Utgard, the dream realm created by Ymir, and spoken by Angrboda during your trip when you first arrive in Ironwood.
    2. When Atreus first starts dreaming you can see him holding the mask completely intact in his hands.
I think all Giants have the ability to access Utgard and only the giants do. When Odin killed Ymir the Giants gained the dream world and Prophecy from Utgard and no one else did. Odin is trying and has been trying to get the last piece of Ymir's gifts since he killed him and got the first mask piece and the rift appeared. He also needs Atreus to open the rift with the mask because only a Giant can open the way for him. when Loki breaks the mask and Odin loses every piece at the end, Odin knows he will never get access to Utgard ever again at this point. No powers of Prophesy and to know "What happens next." As Odin said very specifically. Power only the Giants have.

Doesnt Odin view it as answers for him. The people have the gods, but Odin, Thor etc have no such thing. He kinda sees it as an answer to things normally only reserved for humans since they have questions gods have answers to. I think he talks about his own existence somewhere aswell. Its kinda like the norse gods finding there own faith or trying to better understand there own place in the universe.

I remember in God of War ascension there was this odd Easter egg that was a painting that initially appeared to show Olympus in turmoil. It had the description "Of all the prophecies I have seen, this one haunts my dreams." Then it had a code you had to transcribe in the form of a puzzle in game. When you did this it changed and it showed the earth kind of transforming. There was a big green light at it's source and the new description read "When the earth stops, the journey begins.." Not sure if this may be relevant but if you look at the painting the color of the light seems to sort of match up with the rift.

Him being named god of war wasn't a bad thing for him, but after that he got betrayed, and it wasn't just because he abused his powers, it was more about the prophecy that sons kill their fathers and Zeus was afraid of that.
He even told the prophecy story in the latest GOW game, that the god of war will destroy the Olympus, at first they thought it was Ares who'll destroy Olympus, but after Kratos killed Ares the prophecy still remained and Kratos was named Gow by then so Zeus realized that it was Kratos all along who'll destroy Olympus and he decided to betray him.
And that was the only reason why they helped him kill Ares in the first place, so they could save their own assess.

To me, that was the point: Odin spent his life seeking answers, destroying anyone in the process. Loki became obsessed with answers. If you played a drinking game of how many times Atreus screamed “I neED AnSWerS!!” you’d be dead drunk before the second act. The entire plot of the story was about letting go. All of the characters went through it, some successfully, some failed. In the end, Atreus decided he didn’t need specific answers anymore. He broke the mcguffin and let go, and because both he and kratos changed (the Norns said there is no fate only choices and those choices are predictable because people don’t change), they averted the prophecy. The point wasn’t what the mask and rift contain, the point was letting go and finding your own way. The mask and rift didn’t matter. And it won’t in the future.
And to travel to other realms, they have tyr, who travelled many pantheons on his own accord. They don’t need a magical rift…and I’m sure Atreus can transform into a falcon or do “giant stuff” to get to other pantheons to find his fellow giants.

Is it possible that Odin only half needed Atreus to get the mask and could have got it without him? Odin says he can't read Greek, but he may simply be lying. He was more interested in having Atreus as a disciple. In the section where Atreus frees Garm, the mask is for some reason attracted towards Garm even though Garm has no soul. It's possible that the mask piece was planted to move Atreus towards Garm, Heimdall mentions to Odin after Garm is freed that his part of the mission went well and that he obtained what was needed, so Heimdall may have planted the mask piece and then moved it to a different location. Odin knew that Atreus would free Garm (he seems strangely not bothered when Atreus tells him) but thought that when Atreus went back to Sindri and Brok's house, Kratos would join in with the others criticising him and drive Atreus back to Asgard for good. He didn't realise that Kratos would instead show wisdom, forgiving Atreus and that they would instead go and fix the problem together.

Well you don't really need to use a device like that mask to go to Egypt from Midgard, do you ? People tend to think that all the settings of God of war games are in separate dimensions or whatever but the world of God of war is just our own during mythological times, a time period where the gods were real and active on Earth. The different "realms" you can find on Earth are probably more like spheres of influence of the different pantheons rather than different realities. Midgard is probably just Denmark, Suede and Norway in the world of GoW. Now that the Aesir gods are defeated, Skjöldr (Atreus' Midgardian friend) is going to become one of the very first Viking kings (a legendary king of that name exists if you're wondering) and Vikings are known for their travels to the mediterranean see...
That being said, I started to think mid-game that the mask had to be related to Athena and her ascension to another plan of existence she herself called a Truth back in God of War 3. Was kinda disappointed the connection wasn't made in the end but if they link all of that in a future game, one following an adult Loki/Atreus for instance, then all that mask storyline can still become an absolute masterclass.

So they may actually go with having maps in Egypt, Japan, China, even stone henge in England or something of the sort..maybe the Mayans and Rome too. So how you travelled realm to realm, you actually travel country to country. To different maps all over the world. Have a story that weaves all of the pantheons together, over multiple games. I think the reason why the Giants were only gifted with this is because Odin killed Ymir out of selfishness, Ymir, a primordial, was killed in vain. We see that the games “universe” or over all god (Like the One Above All in Marvel) granted Athena transcendence due to her death being in vain and her dying with a sense of selflessness and came back in similar colors to that of the Rift. Maybe this universes One Above All has rules in place for certain tiers of beings. Primordials can’t die as Odin describes Ymir as a cataclysm, a hurricane, a mountain. Gaia from GOW3 is in a sense not dead and neither is Cronos, 2 beings that are just embodiments of what they really are. Earth and Time. Ymir could be all of creation. Regular gods however are regulators of the lower aspects of creation like water, the sky, the sun. When Helios got captured it didn’t make the literal sun disappear or die, there was no one to guide the suns power/light to their land. Each Pantheon governs a section of the planet and I assume Santa Monica will pick & choose what primordials are “universal” and which ones aren’t since some Pantheons have primordials that are the same as others.

Maybe the mask is Loki's from another timeline. One where he became the evil version of Loki. He wanted to exist in other alternate timelines, but the human body can't withstand it. So instead, he transfered his consciousness into the mask so it could be sent through the rift and transported to alternate timelines. Instead of sending a body that would die, the mask was sent through, and broke into 3 pieces.
Like Brok and Sindri said, the soul has 4 aspects. Form, Mind, Direction, and Luck. Loki put his soul into the mask with Mind, Direction, and Luck. But without his body, he lacked Form. That's why he needed Atreus to wear the mask, so the other 3 aspects of his soul could be completed with a form, allowing him to experience alternate timelines without dying, and getting to retain all the knowledge.

And if they are like Angraboda with her "hieroglyphics" and souls being transported to animals, I can imagine one being sent to a dog or bird to grow into Anubis or Ra. And what if they get ill like the grandmother. Too far fetched maybe, but it would make a fun story.

@@silverpslm I don't disagree with that at all tbh. With Ymir being alive before creation, it's entirely plausible that some of the giants made their way to Egypt and became the pantheon there as they're also described as having the ability to turn into animals

I think Odin was currupted because of the mask . Mask basically was to control the dark magic

The mask was green, Athena specter was green, seems pretty obvious that those things are tied together somehow

The fact it took me until Loki snapped the mask at the end of the game this thought clicked for me out loud.
    “JIM CARRY’S THE MASK?!?!”
Because they did say that mask came from Loki in that movie. The similarities in design was too good to see as well.

There is no mystery behind the mask. It’s quite well know what Loki’s mask does. You put it on, spin around, turn green and say “Sssomebody ssstop mee”.

Odin shares similar traits to Father from FMA and Voldermort from the Harry Potter universe. Fear of death and the unknown drives him to seek knowledge and power by any means. Abandoning his morals, willing to sacrifice, deceive and destroy anything just to stay away from death.
They all end up suffering a fate worse than death as well. Father (or the dwarf in the flask) is banished into the abyss, Voldermort's soul is trapped in purgatory forever, and Odin is cast into oblivion after having his soul extracted from his body and destroyed by Sindri.
It's a steep price to pay for attempting to play God.

Why are you guys obssesed with Athena? Even if She's still "alive". Her part is absolutely done. I'd say Kratos' own remorses materialize as her. Call it what You want. Maybe it's her. Maybe is just a nightmare/hallucination. She appeared as past of Kratos which will always be apart of him, but he chooses to be better.
