Cory Barlog has confirmed that some power or entity corrupted Athena when it ascended. Perhaps the thing that Odin see and heard is the same thing that corrupted Athena.
It’s where Athena was supposed to Go but didn’t fully - the green tint is the dead remaining soul of a god - the afterlife / also creation garden of all gods. Greek , Norse , Roman etc the starting point
What’s most interesting to me is everyone is forgetting the fact that Garm attracted the mask even though Atreus was wrong about the translation. My theory is that garm was also connected to the higher plane snd his ability to travel through realms by creating rifts with the same green color glow. I don’t think the developers just left that in there for no reason Garm/Fenrir is 100% also connected to the mask/higher existence
I'm pretty sure that Heimdall stole the shard and just placed it in the other realm for Atreus to find. I mean he did say to the all father that he "brought the item he wanted". I mean think about it, why would the ALL FATHER of all the people not say a word about Garm to Atreus or the other one? Unless he wanted Atreus to deal with Garm. Hell the all father was acting even sympathetic towards Atreus in the end (sitting on his bed, saying its okay and stuff). Atreus wants to prove himself to the All Father and he knows that. My proof; Atreus has a hard time reading the mask (he blames it on misreading later on, and the All father could have faked acting surprised). Heimdall literally teleporting with the crows is a dead give away. All Father doesn't panick when he learns about Garm's release. Heimdall's mission. The ending of the game; Odin reveals that only Loki can use the mask/ look into the raft while wearing it. EVERYBODY was scolding Atreus (while Odin acted kind towards him, driving him further into his hands), but he didn't anticipate Kratos helping his son, or shutting down the others. Hell if you look at how Atreus left to go to Asgard, you would think Kratos would join in on the scolding (what Odin probably excepted from Kratos, driving Atreus even further into his hands and straining his relationship with his father).
@@zerogalaxy2735eimdall stole the moon or the box for the moon or whatever it was. Garm has the same rift energy or something within him that's how hes able to tear holes into the realms and odin doesnt panic upon garms release because he cant get to asgard I cant remember if its explained how odin managed to completely seal asgard to wear the only way in and out is through his raven power.
I see where you're coming from and I'm not saying you're wrong. Hell you have some good points: Heimdall only referred to it as an "item" (not a box or shard). Garm most likely couldn't get into Asgard because of a barrier. Odin is perfectly chill. However your theory does have some flaws (relax mine isn't water proof either): Garm would hinder Odin's interest in ruling the other realms immensely (cus there wouldn't be any left). If Garm has a similar energy that the mask has, then what would stop it from let's say entering the higher realm that Odin wants to get into? Odin has the Horn that starts the end of Asgard in his possession, so he would most likely already have the box. What would stop Heimdall or Odin for that matter of getting that box if they can teleport all over the place? Garm doesn't have a lot of space to move around with (look at the chains). The mask's glow decreases dramatically at 12:28:11 ruclips.net/video/ixllGOX0Evw/видео.html (this doesn't make any sense if was because of Garm or an item in Garn, because the mask was brighter than light bulb while Atreus was quite a distance from Garm away from Garm. Its simply put inconsistent.) While if it was because of the shard moving away at high speed (teleporting) it would kinda make sense, seeing as how the mask has a great ability of track and radius).
Let's not forget that Surtr stated that the Blades of Chaos have "Primordial Fire" in them. Kratos said that they are not of these lands, while Surtr answered "It shouldn't matter" and proceeded to burn the blades with his fire. The mythologies are connected when it comes to their conception, or at least Greek and Norse myths
In "The Origin of The World" Nag Hammadi Gnostic texts, Chaos is not the first thing to ever-present, Christian Gnostic groups were the first group to rejects the primordiality of Chaos, as Chaos were emerged from darkness (referencing Biblical Outer Darkness), but it goes even beyond Genesis as Darkness itself was casted as byproduct after the completion of emanations from Pleroma were completed within Barbelo (as the sum of entire Creations), then back to the Chaos, after Chaos was generated out of Darkness, then every Divinities would be born, the first being Demiurge as the ignorant, blind and in Sethian case also evil "builder/architect/artisan" of The Universe, which being indirectly guided through Sophia (Wisdom) Also the mention of Sophia rebelling was wrong, it was more out of her desire to generate Demiurge without the consent of her other Aeonic half, not out hatred, although Demiurge in the Greek concepts are often equated with Zeus or Gaia (as either Skyfather(s) or Earthmother(s) ), some Gnostic sect akin to Perates and Jewish Gnostic Justin blatantly considers Athena to also being evil, some groups akin to Ophites considers Athena to be equated with "3rd Heaven" (Venusian Heaven), as it's encompass beyond a single deity but almost a sentient heaven with changing bestial-faced monstrosities spawned from Demiurge as Hebdomad (or the conventional Gnostic system of 7 Archons, yes, Genshin Impact literally based their 7 Archons based of said concept and their upcoming Honkai Star Rail have around 15/16 beings considered to be Aeons in their own grander settings, which is half of Valentinian 30/32 Aeons although they turned it into comical Final Fantasy entities since Honkai Star Rail took more inspirations from JRPGs like Final Fantasy 7 to 10 or so, which turns them even more ironic when they portray Archons in Genshin as somehow benevolent or non-actor after being benevolent too, it's like they tried to subvert Gnostic concepts only to ended up becoming another types of Gnostics akin to Mandaean and Manichaean, which is what "Honkai" is acting as the demiurge in that huge franchise settings, I'm not even starting about SMT and Persona especially since P5 are also eventually ended up being Gnostic, it's like even pop culture can't escapes it despite they're too reliant on visual medias and ended up poorly delivering Gnostic concepts which already beyond abstracts, not to mention every Gnostic groups and religions except maybe Mandaeism have recurring presence of Jesus, which God of War director already confirmed to be same part of God of War universe too, which further solidify the theory of Gnostic Pleroma/Fullness) Again, Gnostic groups in early Christianity and Judaism were diverse and does have different Cosmology, even the mainstream Christianity concepts akin to Hypostasis of God to Seven Deadly Sins from Origen to the more eccentric proto-Orthodox Church Fathers Ponticus, Clement of Alexandria, etc were influenced by Christian Gnostic groups whether they try to deny it or otherwise, despite they flaunted about Book of Enoch and Jewish Apocryphas, they're too scared to acknowledged Christian Apocryphas, which somehow ended up proving Valentinius right at least with me going full tangent into IRL Theological discussions)
It's a way for Santa Monica's writers to create a story wherein ALL mythologies are connected Each mythology has its own laws and elements, but the existence of Primordial Forces show that all of these different worlds are made of the same building block.
@@witchking008 Those are the ones that were referenced in Tyr's vault anyways. There are still Eastern mythologies, which Tyr's appearances in the post story seem to allude to. They could also delve into Grimm style fables or Celtic folklore. We know that Mimir used to serve under Oberon, King of the Fairies.
I feel like the next GOW will start with Atreus returning to Kratos some time after Ragnarol with knowledge about something bigger than all the worlds pantheons and in need of his fathers help. Also I love all the unanswered questions Ragnarok presented us with, really leaves us wanting more!
I agree, perhaps he will even talk to him about Demerge and explain why Athena sent him on the path to kills the Gods. I could see them going full blown Lovecraftian horror with this set up.
I didn’t think about it this way but it actually sounds really great! My ideal of a sequel to Ragnarok was since we discovered that Kratos gains a following he’d go on to create his own pantheon and some other god might come in and try to pull a Young Kratos or something.
The story of Odin is similar to that of someone who has come into contact with an outer god. Seeing something inconceivable for a brief moment and doing everything in their power to not only see it again but also change the world to the image in their vision.
I hope they don't turn it into Satan/YHWH stronger than all pagan gods type of bullshit, like they did in Supernatural. Some new higher cosmic entity would cool as fuck though. - They could even use Sumerian gods for that one.
Here's one for you. Was Athena responsible for the cataclysm in GoW3? Kratos killed multiple gods before the events of GoW3, including the literal personification of death itself, and yet nothing like the disasters we saw in GoW3 happened. Maybe Athena wasn't satisfied simply becoming the new Queen of Olympus and wanted to wipe the entire slate clean and start over from scratch.
I was always under the impression that cataclysm came from Kratos the last and most powerful of the main 12 olympians in universe “dying” and releasing the power of hope into the world
Firstly, Athena doesn't have that power. Secondly, Ares exploded like a nuke, Persephone became a death-lazer, and Thanatos flashbanged Kratos upon death. All the Greek Gods have a sort of elemental explosion they release on death.
Theory: I am predicting that the green scar is connected to the “higher plane of existence” that Athena “Ascended” to after her death in God of War III. A few bits of dialog keyed me into this train of thought. 1st: Odin questioned what sort of afterlife awaited him after his death and looking into the green scar gave him some insight. I believe he was looking into the realm of “higher existence” that Athena occupies (possibly) to this day. (She was defiantly present to pull the sword from Kratos at the end GoW3) 2rd. Odin in the game is the closest match to a God of wisdom much like Athena. I believe had Odin stayed on a virtuous path he would have “Ascended” beyond the green scar to the “higher plane of existence” naturally. However, unlike Athena when Odin was confronted with a glimpse of the realm beyond, he became obsessive and destructive. Odin is an example of the kind of damage a wise person can do with a lack of empathy. As he stated in the fight when Atreus (Loki) destroyed the mask, “Everything I worked for. Everything I killed for….. what was it all for” he justified all the evil acts and manipulation of others as the cost of seeking “truth and knowledge”. Ultimately, (if the theory that Athena ascended because she sacrificed herself for the greater good” this evil obsession would have possibly led to his rejection from “higher existence” (aka the loss of an eye). Minor other points: As it stands there is a plot hole on why the Mask reacted to Garm in Helheim even though no mask fragment was present. If the prediction is that the Green Scar is a tear in existence to a “Higher Plane” my prediction is that Garm was the one who made the tear. Garm’s ability to traverse and tear holes win the realms is second to none. Who knows what scars he ripped open in the world tree before being chained in Helheim? It may even be possible that Gram’s soul may have unintentionally crossed over to the “high existence” (or been destroyed) leaving his soulless body behind. Mask could be reacting to any number of Gram’s connections to “higher existence”. (Not to mention the game points out the difference between primordial beings and gods much as the original trilogy did) In the end, there are a number of parallels between Athena and Odin. Both Athena and Odin wanted Knowledge in order to rule over the land. Both did not seem to care who they hurt or used in the process. Odin lied to himself thinking he could make the 9 realms a better place with what lies beyond the tear. Athena in her “ascended state” stated when Zuse was killed, “mankind was ready to hear her message" and when Kratos returned hope to mankind she exclaimed, "mankind would not know what to do with it (hope)”. Both seemed to have delusions that they were the fittest to rule over all.
I was under the impression the mask reacted to garm because atreus altered a symbol while interpreting it. (The scene where he's in his room in asgard and does something to the mask with his knife before going to helheim)
You should have mentioned Thor the way he died is the same as Athena, but he got blue particles instead of green. Both of them are gods and sacrificed their lives for others
i mean, that's a cool take, but i feel like it's a little questionable whether thor died for "selfless" reasons. on the one hand, yeah you can say that he finally stood up to odin to be better for the sake of thrud despite his fear, just like kratos said, but i feel like a good percentage of that could also have been him just being sick of odin treating him like a mindless weapon. you may still have a point though, since heimdall didn't fade away like thor did when kratos killed him.
@@Rain-cs3wp Bro have u played the Game? Thors Wohle Story is about him blaming himself over modi and magni and becoming an alcoholic again.literally only said no After Kratos said to lay down their weapons for their kids sake , when Thor kept on going about being a destroyer of worlds. His death is selfless, he literally WANTS to destroy worlds and he WANTS to Drink but his wive and daughter dont want him to, hes literally changing only for them, its obvious they gave him a selfless death for a reason.
Maybe if atreus put on the mask and looked inside, the power and everything woukd currpt him just like Athena... and as result loki as we know it would be born
I think the actual scenario was that if he put on the mask, Atreus would have become a mindless repository of knowledge, connected to the rift without a sense of self, and Odin would be free to abuse him for personal gain.
I find it odd that no one really talks about the fact that Athena is still very much alive. And knowing Santa Monica this is a detail they themselves have not forgotten. So it’s Interesting to see how they reincorporate her into future games.
@@AliceIzuragi6291 yeah but I’m speaking in terms of the developers and ppl who actually pay attention to the story. Not sure who “people” are but it’d be a huge oversight to forget something as vital as that.
@@kamisama1031 when i said people. i was referring to characters in game. and anyone in teh norse pantheon who heard of what happened in the greek pantheon would also of course assume she is dead. and teh developers do acknowledge that she is alive. but have also mentioned that she did die at one point before she ascended.

My theory is that Demiurge is Ymirs father in this universe, as well as being the father of all the other oldest gods like gaea, meaning Demiurge is Odin's grandfather.
Uranus, Zeus' grandfather, fits most as the Demiurge since his name sometimes is spelled Ouranos, which is reminiscent of Ouroboros. Snakes are commonly tied to myths of life as a curse and in Gnosticism, all of human life is just an immortal soul trapped in an imperfect mortal coil. Zeus is technically supposed to be the one who provided the divine spark of the soul in an imperfect body from his slain father, who had also slain his father, leading to all life as a metaphorical Ouroboros, especially with the added myth of Kratos killing Zeus. That would make Ymir and Zeus distant cousins if my theory is correct. Ymir could be connected to the Titan line of Gaia and Odin would be similar to Zeus by killing a primordial one and ending the Golden Age of the Titans to build their kingdoms.
Thats.....actually a great point there! But there's still a question to that question.. Do Vanir Gods count to be part of the higher plane of existance?🤔
I wonder if Thor went to this higher plane of existence. Like Athena he dissipated, he didn't leave behind a corpse so I wonder if that's intentional or not. I know he was blue and not green but maybe that's because of his lightining powers? I'm not sure. I feel like Thor dissipating was intentional or else they could've left him as a Corpse and have Thrud mourn over his body. Maybe Thor changing course and choosing to not be a destroyer anymore is what allowed him to ascend?
Maybe, he had a real ascension, Thor not beeing the kind of God who wanted to conquer, he had no such aspirations. But Athena, the first thing she did after she ascended was to plot, and to lead instead of Zeus...
I really wanted to know what was inside the Rift. I didn't necessarily want Atreus to join the Aesir but that's one part of Ragnarok that disappoints me. It was too interesting to just close after the mask was broken.
That entire plot was the thread that links the games together. This gnostic system with Lovecraftian Eldridge beasts would be a much more interesting place to take the series than anywhere else.
If anyone doesn't know, GoW3 was originally going to have an Egypt, Greek, and Norse (I believe) version of Kratos that all team up to kill all their respective gods. The finale ends up with them fallowing the star that Jesus is born under becoming the three wise men. GoW2 even shows this in the thread of fates level.

Athena is still alive, she just have a new power and form. (Higher Existence). The Athena show in 2018 is probably a sort of astral projection made by her to haunt Kratos. So yeah, in a form she was there. She still want something from Kratos.
In-Fact according to an old rumor. After Kratos returned from Helheim Athena would be seen arguing with Freya. Calling her a foolish goddess to trust Kratos and Freya banishes her with a powerful Seiðr spell that according to Freya would have been one of the strongest spells she ever cast.
Imagine if the stuff inside the rift was just literally the developer's office, and Athena was like, "I'M JUST A PLAYTHING? A CHARACTER?!" and just gave up trying to be selfless.

Honestly, the way the Rift and the "indescribable" God sounds a whole lot like HP Lovecraft style of writing. For those unaware of what that means, Lovecraft was a fantasy gothic horror writer, best known for Eldridge Gods like Cthulhu. His horror was based on the concept of an average person seeing creatures and Gods so beyond the scope of human understanding that it would break your mind and soul just by looking at it. He did this by intentionally writing descriptions that contradicted your normal senses, and scenes that had you fill in the blanks but the end result is a picture so distorted that the mind can barely visualize what it's interpreting.

With the hints about Tyr’s animations and this higher plane of existence makes me really feel like the next God of war going to have a connection to Buddhism. Maybe Kratos reaches nirvana and continues to grow as a character.
Doubtful. Nirvana is a state where you have given up and abandon human emotions, reaching selflessness and emptiness. There is nothing to grow from there, because you have nothing to grow from, or to grow to.
If I remember right there was a couple of Japanese war symbols scattered around the first game. So maybe Shinto Buddhism. On that same token we get more blatant excerpts about the celtic religions and the Egyptian pantheon. They can literally go anywhere. I want to see kratos fighting some Slavic squatin Sverog
I think beyond the rift is where the gods of the gods are, outside of any creation stories and the gods are basically trapped in their own universes. Odin wanted to get out and see where they came from and why who put them there etc. beyond the rift will be the ones who really pull the strings over all the pantheons. Thor in comics came upon a similar idea, when trying to stop ragnarok he discovered there were other beings beyond the gods who have manipulated the pantheons for eternity.
I hope thor ascended to a higher plane of existence since he die in a selfless act too imagine how powerful thor would become also at the end of ragnarok when kratos saw himself been worship there's an imagine of thor too
That was part of the original mural, presumably when Kratos dies at the hands of Thor. Angrboda painted over it because kratos/atreus avoided that fate
I like to imagine to imagine that when Odin looked through the portal an entity on the other side poked his eye out with a finger/pencil-like object. Always be wary when around a hole!
What is definitive btw is that Cory has said that the mystery of how Jormungandr went back in time and who blew the horn when Kratos was taking Atreus to Freya are deliberately left open for another game to answer. So it's not a leap to say that this rift is a loose end they are intending to tie up in a sequel.
"There comes another, a Mighter One; but his face and form I cannot foretell; Few are those who can further see than when Odin shall meet the Wolf (Fenrir, who devours him in the myths)". I first learned of that passage from the Eddas during Roy Thomas' run on Marvel Thor, circa V1-270-300. It may indicate that those writing down the Eddas were watching Christianity overtake their faith. That was also the run that, to my knowledge, intro'd the idea that Ragnarok was the culmination of a cycle, not the final end. Issues 293 and 294 depicted a prior Ragnarok wherein the Aesir were closer to their traditional depictions.
I can’t speak for the marvel comic run, but I can confirm that most scholars believe that passage is from good ol christian retconning and throwing in their god to try and convert Norse pagans, and likely is not a relic of the original oral tradition
@@sbollimpalliIt’s always difficult to find out how oral records looked sadly. Though I would be surprised if things were just changed right then and there. The people back then knew their oral traditions after all. Hard to walk up to them and change the oral tradition as a tool of conversion. If anything I see it more likely that an already christianized region changed old figures and stories to make them match with their current beliefs as was quite common.
@@pilum3705 oh it was likely not an instant shift, but that was a common conversion tactic for catholic missionaries then. Go into a culture, insert their god and the real god, try to change existing pagan gods to warriors or great kings or what have you, profit. We saw it happen all the time in Celtic mythology, hence why that’s the current theory on what happened I’m pretty sure
@@sbollimpalli I am still not fully certain that these shifts had to have necessarily been intentional. Cause it's hard to come in from outside a community and tell everyone that things they passed down about their own history/legends/mythology is wrong. And writing your versions of stories down is only of limited use if most of the people you're trying to convert can't actually read. It seems more logical to me that something similar happened as here in Germany. Once the new faith was introduced old gods/creatures started to morph into versions that fit the new framework creating now well known folk tale characters. I can imagine that the Edda is simply in an early phase of that shift. Not really planned but a natural development. ...Or some things we believe were changed are actually original and some things we think are original aren't. Who knows? *shrug*
I have a belief that i got from watching this theory that the Athena we see in god of war 3 and god of war 2018 is a different Athena like the evil that was inside her because in the darkhorse comics we see she is essentially in the afterlife that is made for gods that died doing good deeds so she had to essentially divide herself before she could ascend because she has to be pure to enter there
And also in the comics she doesn't show disdain for kratos or atagonize him she is more like the Athena from 1 and 2 that tried to guide him to a better path and dissuade him from seeking his vengeance
Greek/Roman Gods often have a Triumvirate, young, old and complete, and Gnostics tie that to Self-conscious, sub conscious and unconscious, with the true God being the unconscious aspect we can't know while awake/alive. Her unconscious self would have passed on if this were Gnostic pleroma, her spirit or sub conscious can exist within Kratos if he accepted her into his heart. Essentially he could only envision her as he knew her, even if she spoke from beyond the mortal plane, but she would be something more beyond it. The spirit or sub conscious is always tied to personal truths that lead the mind back to the soul, and she appeared as he contemplated his self literally while taking out the swords. In a weird way he was just talking to himself, but in a Gnostic sense he was unconsciously calling on his spirit for guidance and it took the perfect form of Athena as he knew her since all spirits would be connected to The One in Pleroma.
Imagine if every pantheon has a chance to ascend, but the path is hidden by a certain set of circumstances depending on the trial needed. For the Norse Odin, it was to work with the giants to get the mask. For Greek Gods, it took a selfless act in a world of selfish gods.
My theory is that Athena or somebody was in the realm tear and was in this higher dimension. She used the higher dimension to go back in time where Odin first discovered it and wanted to entice him that looking into the realm tear he would find a way to end ragnarok. At the end of the game when Loki has the mask and got to decide whether or not he should use the mask to look into the realm tear, I think in an alternate timeline he looks into the realm tear and it opens releasing a higher dimensional being that kills kratos in the prophecy and Loki and odin team up to kill this being and since there wasn’t a fifth panel in the jotunheim prophecy they most likely died. but since he decided to destroy the mask it avoided kratos death and Athena’s plan was thwarted. I think the reason why she wanted to do this was to escape the higher plane and come back to the current reality.
If they're going the Gnostic route then what's on the other side of that rift would be a form of Kratos more powerful than Kratos could imagine, and a swift erasure from time and space if he brought violence into that place. To kill the Gnostic God would be to kill yourself, literally as your soul comes from it. No way Kratos kills the source of eternal life itself, more likely he is unknowingly fulfilling the true God's mission by killing false Gods and returning their stolen power to the source. I see him killing Egyptian Gods, maybe Babylonian gods which would bring him to either Satan or the Demiurge, the False Creator.
@@vincenzoaquino8299 According to OP, it was the knowledge god being split into multiple places that always ends with the destruction of the mythologies. Gnosticism with a dash of Lovecraft would be awesome.
@Krombabulus Michael gow3 m8. Athena wanted Kratos's power the power of hope for herself to rule Olympus. She would have given it to the people if she was helping Kratos or just helping Kratos along his journey. Same thing with gow4. Athena spirit scene. Yes Zeus was one of protagonist of the game but the ture one was Athena.
Instead of Egypt or Celtic gods, maybe we’ll see Kratos face the likes of Cthulhu. Eldritch beings have had a corrupting power that drives people mad, like Odin. His insatiable lust for knowledge. Athena’s wisdom may have allowed her to not fall to madness but corrupted into the folly that is lust for power. To rule Greece and likely the world. To quote another angry god, “There’s always some fool who wants to rule the world!”
That would mean thor is on that higher plane too no? Out of all the gods killed in the last 2 games, he was the only one that disintegrated like athena, maybe freyr as well, but we didn't see his actual death. I can't wait for the next game when we explore this further
I kept thinking the same thing about Athens ascend and the mask. Odin saying he saw something there. I literally thought to myself "is it even worth the price of knowledge to risk going mad" Even God's have Beings above them

0:55 I feel like Ymir was like the Greek Gods Kratos slew. Mimir and Kratos discuss the Greek gods and how they were “vessels of power” that wielded nature in various forms kind of like how Odin describes Ymir. It’s interesting to me that Odin and Kratos both started out as weaker to more senior gods of raw power but both of them won and went in two entirely different directions afterwards. Also if Ymir died and triggered that rift maybe he ascended as well? Like Athena? Perhaps he and Athena will return as corrupted ascended gods
If Christianity exists in God Of War, it would be interesting if it’s Lucifer who’s behind the rift and the mask. Something to tempt Odin with and knowing how to tempt other gods.
I think the rift itself is more or less just access and free passage between pantheons. And that's how Athena got there (why she shared its colorful aura). With the access and free passage to all walks of life comes the ability to obtain for yourself the "knowledge" and "truth" atreus and Odin felt. It's not the cheat code they thought it was, but a portal of potential for you to seek out the answers for yourself.
That would be kind of lame though because Kratos makes his way to the norse world all on his own. Also went to the Egyptian world in the comics apparently. (Havent read them). So what would the point in that be.
See I was really hoping they'd lean into an eldritch deity plotline. They'd complete the mask, Loki would look through, but the things he saw would change him so drastically, shake him to his core so deeply, that he ends up siding with Odin in the finale, leading to another game of Loki coming to terms with what he did, the fact that it was all for nothing, as now he is the one who will bring destruction to Asgard. What we got was cool tho.
HONESTLY! I would really like to see Atreus basically looking into the crack and becoming straight MAD TRICKSTER GOD as result, and then he proceeds to do a crapton of evil with his new "twisted insanity" and the next game is focused on Kratos having to choose between letting his son go batshit or killing him to save the world. Maybe there would be a third option, like, save Loki and bring him back to sanity, but in that case, I'd want a muti-ending game, where one ending, he destorys the world, one ending, he saves his son, and one ending *if you complete all side quests perfectly* you save Loki and they reunite. Happy ending. I'd die, I'd die, I'd die! That would be so hype!
@@honaleri The plot of these games was to stop father killing son and mothers that the Gods are oppressed with. This would go against the plot of the game, so the third option would be the *only* option.
You can use camera mode to get a closer look at the rift when you play as Atreus. Playing around with the settings also kind of blocks out a little of the 'light' so you can see what looks to be a semi-fluid or semi-solid....substance/material/surface...and it kinda looks as if you are looking down from above.
Theory: Atreus goes back in time to meet the giants, retrieves the mask, looks into the scar, and what he sees 'concentrates' his 'nature', turning him into Loki, the god of chaos.
Your theory makes total sense! Many people are quick to compare the mask with that one mask from the movie Jim Carrey played ("The Mask"), but I've seen no one comment on the writings ON the mask itself. I happen to be Greek and I noticed that when Atreus first started reading what is stated on the mask, he spoke greek words! Then, I took a good look of the mask through other cutscenes and noticed that there are indeed greek letters on its right side, forming real words that come from Modern Greek (they are written in modern greek form). I haven't made sense of them, because not all of them are visible, or, the developers didn't intend to make them make sense, but they are there and you can see them. HOWEVER, if you take a look at the left side of the mask, you can see characters that look like Chinese, or some other language from those parts of Asia! There may be even more characters related to other ancient civilizations in the middle, up-side or down-side that I couldn't figure out, like, say Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs! Just by figuring out that Atreus was reading Greek and taking a good look at the mask, I ended up on that same theory as you, that there is something above all pantheons that Santa Monica Studios gave us a hint about. Maybe people from other countries can take a look too and see if they recognize some of these letters / characters, because I'm totally interested in the secrets of that mask! Take the time to pause videos of cutscenes that show the mask up close to see if you figure something out!
I saw your video, and I commented! Like I said, your video was really interesting, but when it ended I was left with more questions than answers. You inspired this video by the way, check the pinned comment.
I rarely comment on anything on RUclips, but what you have said here, including the Plemora Paradox here, and its possible connection(s), you truly maybe unto something. Great video BTW.
Doesn't Mimir tell Kratos that Odin started seeking the mask because a female voice told him to in his dreams? Maybe that was Athena or one of these primordial gods. It seemed like a weird thing for them to include and never follow up on, so I think it's definitely a hint
What Odin saw in the tear was the G-Man and he showed the Half-Life 3 copy he kept hidden in his briefcase all along, and the joy Odin felt upon seeing such a magnificent object literally burned one of his eyes
Interesting take! The best explanation I’ve heard so far. I could see this being a path they’d take. There still may be other reasonings behind it. But this one seems to be the wisest! Pun intended lol
With Athena's ascension being because she died because of a selfless act, shouldn't that also apply to other gods such as Freyer? Since he sacrificed himself to save Kratos, Atreus etc.
They are gods freyer and Freya, he even mentions it when you save him and he gives you his boat, plus even if he wasn’t he was worshipped by the elves in alfhiem had his own statue dedicated to him out in the desert he even ended their war which tyr was never able to do
I don't think so cuz the color is different, he has so much guilt for killing the giants and he just simply disintegrate when he died kinda similar to when you kill Odin's General.
Instead of the following God of War game being about a specific pantheon, it is about Loki reaching this higher plane, by being a trickster and eventually effing up the balance of everything, Kratos goes on to fight what ever chaos is eating at the core of existence and freeing humanity from all deities completely.
pretty good video i really agree which confirms the next game either on atreus or kratos they are gonna end up on egypt which if it comes to atreus then it's a sequel or if it comes to kratos it's a prequel.
Gives much more meaning when Kratos says "I'm you're monster no longer" the true God must've known Athena's plan and in turn like the book of Job he lost everything and everyone but he pushed on in life and God gave him a fresh start you can say with Faye and Atreus and now people will start knowing him as Benevolent and not as a monster anymore in beliefs they say a higher plane of existence is when they become the embodiment of a concept which is why you can't grasp the true Gods existence because it's the absolute embodiment of righteousness like the path Kratos chose his emotions , regrets and Faye influenced his drive to no longer be who he was
Does this mean that Kratos is indeed still Athena’s monster despite what he said because he is her tool to destroy Odin since he is so close To getting in to the higher plane and she can’t share that power so she manipulates her tool to kill Odin.
@@lastdragonborn0 okay I see, I'm kind of surprised that we don't have more info 'bout Athena in ragnarok. I would have enjoy to see what could motivate odin so much. And understand how he could enhance the realms
Many people didn't get the words that were described in the mask were from greek origin but the mask had both greek, nordic languages for sure and maybe even more than that so yeah the God of war franchise will definitely get a huge continuation with both Kratos and Atreus taking the lead, who knows maybe we will get a third character which would be a son or a daughter of Atreus.
There are Greek, Egyptian, Japanese and possibly ancient hindu writing on the mask. Cory Barlog has confirmed that Kratos needs several games to figure out who really is and Kratos is God of War. Probably in the next the theme will be a multi-pantheon War (caused by the fall of Olympus and Asgard) and the fight against the Higher Existence .
@@vincenzoaquino8299 What happens if gods literally fight for their own survival? They could fear Kratos or maybe even try to eliminate him. If christianity was canon as Cory said then we could have god in the higher plain of existence and gods from pantheons acting as his angels. Kratos could be satan in that universe. Killing all gods and becoming the embodiment of wrath. But in Ragnarok Kratos sees a new path for himself which turns things around. So we could have the return of the exiled god to fix his mistakes in Greece which could either be under Roman gods or the christian god. As for “pleroma” Kratos could feel whole only when he achieves his purpose into molding himself as a true god of war. One different from other gods. This could lead to Nirvana (reincarnation circle in Hindu myth). Kratos could go to India after making amends in Greece. Atreus could go to Egypt and Japan (Kopesh and Katana would fit him like a glove) in a spin off series where the “higher plane of existence” is further explained.
@@tonysoldan Well the fall of Olympus and Asgard will probably cause a multi-pantheon War (this was also the original plot of GOW3),because the Pantheons probably will see Kratos like a definitive threat for all of them. I’d figured that when Kratos saw Athena it wasnt merely a hallucination or representation of internal conflict, and was hoping that would be expanded upon in Ragnarok. I feel like it’s still a loose end but this is a very interesting way to look at it.
More like an unwanted Psychic visitor. he tells her on the boat ride to get out of his head. and Mimir's "pretty sure you weren't talking to me back there..." implies he didnt hear or see her. he just felt kratos look up at something while he was rechaining the blades and then tell something he's not their monster anymore
@@bearcole1687 true, she was there for him, honestly had me convinced there was still something emerging from the Greek pantheon. The gnostic idea is cool too though.
As soon as someone told me that the writing on the mask looked Greek, I was hoping when Kratos saw it he would call for Athena and demand to know what games she is playing.
What I LOVE, if they get into that "higher existence", there's Cthulu staring back at him haha. But reality I say there is ALWAYS a level of development to want more, higher and grow. Where reality of it is, the more you get, the more you want to go back, hence that missing feeling in the universe, why I feel with Gods in GOW they're the top of the food chain, but aside from handful with personal conflict, there are just those who will always feel empty and make more. Where I feel sacrifice isn't a "requirement" but more a coincidental path. Where her true feeling to stand in the way put her energy in sync with the moment of her death and body being catalyst to almost literally be a portal. Why Ymir in my opinion was at peace ALREADY, but because of conflict, within himself AND with Odin attempting to kill him, that's where the tear had come about, unlike with Athena's where it merely opened and let her step through.
Seeing that Christanity is canon to the GOW universe, she may had become a angel of a sort appointed by Yaweh. She died a selfness death and those who died in the service of a good deed go to heaven.
Well... like the saying goes. Knowledge is power, and power corrupts absolute. Odin became corrupt when he peered through the veil and had a glimpse of absolute Knowledge. Athena probably ended up insane as well, but much faster because she ascended directly. Or perhaps reverse. Who knows. Perhaps future games can tell? But there is certainly something more going on.
Odin is the opposite of Zeus in terms of philosophy. Zeus cared about being omnipotent as Odin cared about being omniscient. The mask made Odin obsessed with omniscient power over the 9 realms the same way Pandora’s box made Zeus obsessed with omnipotent power over Greece. The difference between Greek and Norse gods are that Greek gods are immortal as Norse Gods are mortal. Norse Gods live a long time but they still have a limited life unlike Greek Gods. Odin was protecting his mortal life from Ragnorok while Zeus was protecting his immortal life in the war against Olympians and Titans. Athena tried to manipulate Kratos for knowledge the same way Odin tried to manipulate Atreus for omniscient power. Kratos ended up learning a lot from Zeus about the nature of being a God the same way Atreus learned a lot from Thor about the nature of being a God. The Gods of Wisdom deep down had bad intentions and were using the Gods of Thunder. The Gods of Thunder deep down had good intentions but were used by the Gods of Wisdom.
Check out my latest video, where I go into more detail about the rift in Odin's basement, and the possibility of Christianity coming to God of War: ruclips.net/video/g7LZDTRBJ9U/видео.html
I have a theory about your theory, In the comic book it is stated by Athena that Katos has a destiny to fulfil.. His blades of chaos are a primordial weapon, they are always returning to him. And Athena is tounting him until he uses his blades to slay the giant hippo. She is deliberately trying to make him angry and make him use violence like in god of war 3 when he slays the gods of the greek pantheon, I think that demiurge is actually a good god as he is the one responsible of the creation of the physical universe and will actually subvert our expectations. my reasoning here comes from the fact that the monad kicked demiurge from heaven in the first place because he was the one who created the physical universe. so it makes sense that the monad is using Athena to manipulate Kratos into slaying all the lesser gods who control the physical universe. To erase it completely. It also plays into the narrative. the highest gods ware both tricksters, Zeus and odin they both tried and succeeded at manipulating kratos to some degree. So it wouldn’t surprise me if nomad is actually the bad big of the series. And nomed is sometimes connected and or associated with Jehovah. if you have ever read from the Old Testament i would assume you couldn’t really consider him a nice and caring god.
Disappointing how no one is taking in the knowledge of Christianity existing in the universe of GOW and how the color green is associated with inherently demonic things, and the color green wasn't exactly referencing "good" in GOW. This could easily have connection with the Christian God and Christian Hell and Satan, where in Odin sacrificed his soul for the power of knowledge, and not just his soul, but everything. Which is very accurate to "making a deal with the Devil"
The Chaos Kamf came to mind when the rift was first revealed, especially in the same place where Ymir was killed. Many mythologies around the world begin with the head god(s) defeating a primordial being of great size and destruction, and creating the world from its body.
Think of it from a Stargate perspective. The different pantheons belong to different universes. Only accessible by channels called God Gates. Tealc, I mean Kratos somehow left the Greek universe and traveled to Norse universe by one of these gates. You can think of Athena of having been ascended as did the ancients and all the other gods stuck in semi-ascended form like Anubis from SG1.

Heimdall only referred to it as an "item" (not a box or shard).
Garm most likely couldn't get into Asgard because of a barrier.
Odin is perfectly chill.
However your theory does have some flaws (relax mine isn't water proof either):
Garm would hinder Odin's interest in ruling the other realms immensely (cus there wouldn't be any left).

In "The Origin of The World" Nag Hammadi Gnostic texts, Chaos is not the first thing to ever-present, Christian Gnostic groups were the first group to rejects the primordiality of Chaos, as Chaos were emerged from darkness (referencing Biblical Outer Darkness), but it goes even beyond Genesis as Darkness itself was casted as byproduct after the completion of emanations from Pleroma were completed within Barbelo (as the sum of entire Creations), then back to the Chaos, after Chaos was generated out of Darkness, then every Divinities would be born, the first being Demiurge as the ignorant, blind and in Sethian case also evil "builder/architect/artisan" of The Universe, which being indirectly guided through Sophia (Wisdom)
Also the mention of Sophia rebelling was wrong, it was more out of her desire to generate Demiurge without the consent of her other Aeonic half, not out hatred, although Demiurge in the Greek concepts are often equated with Zeus or Gaia (as either Skyfather(s) or Earthmother(s) ), some Gnostic sect akin to Perates and Jewish Gnostic Justin blatantly considers Athena to also being evil, some groups akin to Ophites considers Athena to be equated with "3rd Heaven" (Venusian Heaven), as it's encompass beyond a single deity but almost a sentient heaven with changing bestial-faced monstrosities spawned from Demiurge as Hebdomad (or the conventional Gnostic system of 7 Archons, yes, Genshin Impact literally based their 7 Archons based of said concept and their upcoming Honkai Star Rail have around 15/16 beings considered to be Aeons in their own grander settings, which is half of Valentinian 30/32 Aeons although they turned it into comical Final Fantasy entities since Honkai Star Rail took more inspirations from JRPGs like Final Fantasy 7 to 10 or so, which turns them even more ironic when they portray Archons in Genshin as somehow benevolent or non-actor after being benevolent too, it's like they tried to subvert Gnostic concepts only to ended up becoming another types of Gnostics akin to Mandaean and Manichaean, which is what "Honkai" is acting as the demiurge in that huge franchise settings, I'm not even starting about SMT and Persona especially since P5 are also eventually ended up being Gnostic, it's like even pop culture can't escapes it despite they're too reliant on visual medias and ended up poorly delivering Gnostic concepts which already beyond abstracts, not to mention every Gnostic groups and religions except maybe Mandaeism have recurring presence of Jesus, which God of War director already confirmed to be same part of God of War universe too, which further solidify the theory of Gnostic Pleroma/Fullness)
Again, Gnostic groups in early Christianity and Judaism were diverse and does have different Cosmology, even the mainstream Christianity concepts akin to Hypostasis of God to Seven Deadly Sins from Origen to the more eccentric proto-Orthodox Church Fathers Ponticus, Clement of Alexandria, etc were influenced by Christian Gnostic groups whether they try to deny it or otherwise, despite they flaunted about Book of Enoch and Jewish Apocryphas, they're too scared to acknowledged Christian Apocryphas, which somehow ended up proving Valentinius right at least with me going full tangent into IRL Theological discussions)
Isnt Greek Norse And Egypt Mythology are the big 3
It's a way for Santa Monica's writers to create a story wherein ALL mythologies are connected

@omar619kamis where did ye see it? Also he saw the world as one everything connected by something which controls ppl without knowing
I was always under the impression that cataclysm came from Kratos the last and most powerful of the main 12 olympians in universe “dying” and releasing the power of hope into the world
Well they were connected to the elements
Didn't athena say that the evils of the world corrupted the olympians?
Thus killing them released the evils of the world?
Firstly, Athena doesn't have that power. Secondly, Ares exploded like a nuke, Persephone became a death-lazer, and Thanatos flashbanged Kratos upon death. All the Greek Gods have a sort of elemental explosion they release on death.
@@pedroguilherme868 Ares, Athena, and Thanatos were killed after the box was opened.
(She was defiantly present to pull the sword from Kratos at the end GoW3)
2rd.
Minor other points:
As it stands there is a plot hole on why the Mask reacted to Garm in Helheim even though no mask fragment was present. (Not to mention the game points out the difference between primordial beings and gods much as the original trilogy did)
In the end, there are a number of parallels between Athena and Odin.
Why.. why did it say 2rd??

My theory is that Demiurge is Ymirs father in this universe, as well as being the father of all the other oldest gods like gaea, meaning Demiurge is Odin's grandfather.
Great Great grandfather not grandfather

Do Vanir Gods count to be part of the higher plane of existance?🤔
@@itsme37jcz9 in Norse mythology freyr is actually one of the main gods (god of crops), so i think he counts.
My thoughts too.
He met the qualification of accend, as he stood up to his father for the sake of his daughter before being killed.
Maybe, he had a real ascension, Thor not beeing the kind of God who wanted to conquer, he had no such aspirations. But Athena, the first thing she did after she ascended was to plot, and to lead instead of Zeus...
yep, heimdall was just a choked corpse in the mud after all
I really wanted to know what was inside the Rift.

And 20years 8games later , still a masterpiece leading for more . I wish they would confirm if Athena was real or not .

@@aaditkhan728 No, Cory Barlog has confirmed that Kratos needs several games to figure out who really is. The path that he mentions in endgame it was confirmed by Eric Williams to be connected on the next Saga.
I don’t think they’d use a religion that’s still relevant
I doubt they will do a game based on current religion. Doubt they’ll have Kratos slaying Hindu or Shinto gods.
Cant wait for him to fight Wukong
I think beyond the rift is where the gods of the gods are, outside of any creation stories and the gods are basically trapped in their own universes. Odin wanted to get out and see where they came from and why who put them there etc. beyond the rift will be the ones who really pull the strings over all the pantheons. Thor in comics came upon a similar idea, when trying to stop ragnarok he discovered there were other beings beyond the gods who have manipulated the pantheons for eternity.
I hope thor ascended to a higher plane of existence since he die in a selfless act too imagine how powerful thor would become also at the end of ragnarok when kratos saw himself been worship there's an imagine of thor too
Thor died only partially though. Some parts of his soul are still inside Mjolnir. You can actually see him talking with the hammer in game.

@@sbollimpalli Entirely possible.
Perhaps it's an evil side as you said it perhaps, the evil one of an impostor or somehow uses her physical form.
Holy I really hope they make this theory canon. Perfect plot for the next game
Imagine kratos fighting against people more powerful than the Gods, that would be so epic and show how powerful Kratos truly is
that would have to be primordials
I imagine he’s eventually going to fight some Lovecraftian horrors that might deal in gnosticism.
He would need the power of hope back then
Kratos vs goku, saitama, Naruto, etc..
So many of my favorite games end up circling back to gnostic philosophy and symbolism so this is a perfect headcanon for me for the time being
What are some other ones you played?
PLEASE make a full version of your intro, it’s epic and motivating at the same time
Athena was the main protagonist of the original gow series. I'm just wonder if the evil from pandora power consumed her or something else.
Cory Barlog say that some power or entity corrupted her, so probably something else ,not just the evil of Pandora Box.

It wasn’t all for nothing, Atreus is going to figure out more about the rift when he sails to the other countries, or whatever.
@@KRYMauL lmao, boy pulls up to Egypt and fights Ra
Ahh, so THAT'S why Eon has a viking helmet on in skylanders
I would love to see this being their beginning hints at the abrahamic God
They’d never go that route

Doesn't Mimir tell Kratos that Odin started seeking the mask because a female voice told him to in his dreams? Maybe that was Athena or one of these primordial gods. It seemed like a weird thing for them to include and never follow up on, so I think it's definitely a hint
What Odin saw in the tear was the G-Man and he showed the Half-Life 3 copy he kept hidden in his briefcase all along, and the joy Odin felt upon seeing such a magnificent object literally burned one of his eyes

Gives much more meaning when Kratos says "I'm you're monster no longer" the true God must've known Athena's plan and in turn like the book of Job he lost everything and everyone but he pushed on in life and God gave him a fresh start you can say with Faye and Atreus and now people will start knowing him as Benevolent and not as a monster anymore in beliefs they say a higher plane of existence is when they become the embodiment of a concept which is why you can't grasp the true Gods existence because it's the absolute embodiment of righteousness like the path Kratos chose his emotions , regrets and Faye influenced his drive to no longer be who he was
i jsut had a theory not too long ago that kratos was going to face god
the outrage would be hilarious
How can you face an omnipotent entity? Kratos faces the devil and demons would actually be possible
Maybe instead of facing god he becomes the true god
Why is the intro always so fire LIKE ITS AMAZING
Does this mean that Kratos is indeed still Athena’s monster despite what he said because he is her tool to destroy Odin since he is so close To getting in to the higher plane and she can’t share that power so she manipulates her tool to kill Odin.

I would love Athena leading an army of pantheons to kill kratos and watch him kick a bunch of ass and show Athena was being controlled then free her.
My proof;
Atreus has a hard time reading the mask (he blames it on misreading later on, and the All father could have faked acting surprised).
Holy fuck that 20 second intro.. Well done. Liked before the watch. And subbed. ;)

Cory said that Athena was corrupted by some power or entity, so there some great evil behind her( the same thing that Odin see in the Rift?).
Surtr sacrificed himself similar to Athena so do y’all think he ascended to become Ragnarok?
No, he became King Borr
Your a way better youtuber than that kaptain kuba kid. I swear i hate how everyone agrees with everything he says. He was saying eldin ring should have won game of the year and all of his simps were agreeing with him. But when u made your video saying kratos is getting old they all bashed you but they praise kuba when he says it
I feel sorry for Odin.
His obsession dooms Him *ironicly* without his knowledge
We’ve already fought and killed dragons in GOW, Yahweh wouldn’t be much of an interesting antagonist as it’s just another giant dragon
@@justbegoodlito more powerful than that
@@justbegoodlito Nope Yahweh omnipotent in power
If they bring Christinity GOW will fail miserably
@@spiritual9574 Yahweh is a dragon with limited power, it says as much in scripture
Well... like the saying goes.
I have a theory about your theory,
In the comic book it is stated by Athena that Katos has a destiny to fulfil..
His blades of chaos are a primordial weapon, they are always returning to him.
And Athena is tounting him until he uses his blades to slay the giant hippo.
She is deliberately trying to make him angry and make him use violence like in god of war 3 when he slays the gods of the greek pantheon,
I think that demiurge is actually a good god as he is the one responsible of the creation of the physical universe and will actually subvert our expectations. my reasoning here comes from the fact that the monad kicked demiurge from heaven in the first place because he was the one who created the physical universe. so it makes sense that the monad is using Athena to manipulate Kratos into slaying all the lesser gods who control the physical universe.
Hope you’ll respond..😅 love and respect!
Great video.😮💨👌🏻💪
In a parallel world Atreus did look through the rift and saw..........just some dude with a bag of chips and a playstation controller
Odin wanted knowledge of the Akashic Records.
Me: "Hears Demiurge"
My Brain: "Sasuga Ainz-sama!"
if Atreus wore that mask, his whole head would become green and he'll say "SMMMOOOOKIIIIIIINNNN'" iykyk
Ik 😴😂
The Chaos Kamf came to mind when the rift was first revealed, especially in the same place where Ymir was killed. Many mythologies around the world begin with the head god(s) defeating a primordial being of great size and destruction, and creating the world from its body.
What about the valkyries. In GOW when you end them they come out as green spirits, as well as the souls in helheim and the lake spirits
Santa monica taking notes
Think of it from a Stargate perspective. The different pantheons belong to different universes. Only accessible by channels called God Gates. Tealc, I mean Kratos somehow left the Greek universe and traveled to Norse universe by one of these gates. You can think of Athena of having been ascended as did the ancients and all the other gods stuck in semi-ascended form like Anubis from SG1.
