    It's definitely an interesting take, but it's such a jarring shift for Atreus at too late a point in the game. He has matured so much at this point. While he did want vengeance, he was still a compassionate kid. He would personally never forgive himself if he did that to Surtr and Sinmara.
    The best alternative woulda been if Sinmara herself walked into Muspelheim and consoled Surtr, telling him that it's okay. That they've not been hiding away from each other out of love, but in reality, out of fear, and that they can never truly be together if they lived in that constant fear. That's when Surtr finally gives in and voluntarily merges with Sinmara.

      I would definitely love that better for sake of Sinmara and Surtr, like if they will be lost in the transformation at least they would still be together despite Surtr saying that this was the lesser pain it was pretty much not his call to make and he took the choice they should've made together.
      Don't know if that would console her in any case so maybe it is best to stand aside as she grieves?

      As much as I love this take, this would go against the game's central theme of choosing your own fate. Maybe in another timeline where the game follows the prophecy of Kratos dying, this would be a good redemption for Surtr and Sinmara's story.

      I would’ve loved to see that it makes more sense than “choose the lesser pain “ but for who exactly? It’s like kratos robbing freya of decision to let balder kill her. Surtr made the decision for sinmara instead of at the very least bringing her into the fold all so she doesn’t have to die but what if she wanted to die with him. he doesn’t get to make that call which is why ragnarok was incomplete. That made no sense to me

    • @squashmallow2006

      @@drolleskate6164 It's a tough call indeed. Because not only is it not Surtr's choice to make, but it's also not Atreus' business to interfere in Surtr's choice. Plus he had a point. Atreus lying to get ragnarok feels more tragic than Surtr sacrificing himself for Sinmara. She died helping the ones who killed her husband, under the belief that Odin betrayed them, and Atreus doesn't show the slightest bit of pity. I'd say this was out of character, but he IS Loki after all, he has an inborn power to deceive and persuade, and his empathy wasn't going to get in the way of his revenge

    • @crimsonflowerqueen5042
      @crimsonflowerqueen5042 Год назад +263

      I'd say this would be a better version of what they tried to portray in GOW 2018 and Kratos biggest fears becoming reality:Atreus walking the same path that he once did.
      Kratos had his moments of compassion and empathy to others as well through the OG games but by the time of GOW3 he gave up on everything after almost everything was took from him and focused single-mindedly on revenge.
      He chose revenge even over Pandora, who he had been forming a bond with.
      Its heartbreaking to just imagine this situation play out from both of their perspectives.
      Brok was one of the very few he would call friends and for good reason, that man never showed fear of him, did not see him as a monster and spoke the truth regardless of what others thought and there's no other scene that shows how much respect Kratos has for Brok than when he asks him to bless the draupnir spear "as a great blacksmith",in a moment where the blacksmith probably needed it most.
      Brok also cared a lot about Atreus,he was that potty-mouthed uncle that nevertheless had your back,he offered to join Kratos in Helheim when he fell ill,he was glad to hear that Heimdall died because it meant that atreus would be safe and he stood up for him when 'Tyr' tried to take the mask that he earned.
      Brok saw what others didn't and he got stabbed for his troubles.
      And like Sindri I think Atreus also blames himself for it.
      After all he did push searching for tyr and brough him to their home, just like Sindri called him out on(makes me wonder how they would take it if they found out the real tyr was alive...)and in his perspective there's no way to make things right other than taking out Odin by any means he sees necessary ("War is won by those who are willing to sacrifice anything"was also said by Kratos in GOW2018,maybe that also stuck), but Kratos knows better,he knows more than anyone the feeling of grief and how much he would regret his actions once he saw the end results. (that's probably one of the many reasons he protected Freya from Atreus too).
      Maybe things could have been different.
      But intent does not matter only consequences.
      I'm sorry for rambling under your comment 😅 but it made me think.

      The way I look at it is not the fact that this is really out of his character, but a different side of him that his father doesn't want him to be. It's the same thing with Kratos trying his hardest not to revert back to the old Kratos for the sake of his son. Even though Atreus & Loki are the same person, their ideals and persona are completely different. The Atreus his father wishes for him to be now by opening his heart is the total opposite of what Loki is in Norse mythology. The god of mischief and a cunning trickster. One who runs on chaos any chance he gets. Notice how, in the cut dialogue, Atreus considers what Kratos initially taught him about closing his heart and venegence the same thing. During Ragnarok, the term "open your heart" and justice are closely related making these two phrases polar opposites. So although this does go against his character now, there's still a part of him that he might have to fight against so he doesn't revert back to Loki or even become a full-fledged Loki in the future.

    • @WillofGodwin
      @WillofGodwin Год назад +27

      @@crimsonflowerqueen5042 Exactly. Kratos's biggest fear was seeing Atreus walk in the same path he did except he didn't realize his teachings, prior to telling him to open his heart, were leading his son straight to it. Even when he didn't want to tell him about his godhood, this in turn is what made him ill. Kratos told Atreus to close his heart because that's all he was used to himself. There was no way Kratos could open his heart to people's sufferings since this would've directly handicapped him into feeling bad for the people he killed in order to seek venegence against both Ares and his father Zeus. Closing your heart and venegence are closely related to Atreus and he felt he must do whatever was necessary, hence why he lied to Sinmara. Now Kratos telling him to open it instead is where the shift happens.
      Unfortunately in future games, this might cause Atreus to go through internal conflict later on in the story the same way Kratos tried his hardest not to revert back to the old Kratos from Greece. Atreus might later on revert back to the Loki his father didn't want him to be.

    I realised if this was kept in, it would make the first interaction between Atreus and Heimdall infinitely better because it proves Heimdall’s thoughts about Atreus true. “You want to manipulate and lie to get whatever you want” with him lying to Sinmara about Odin killing Surtr and “I watch your mouth move and I see cities burning” being Sinmara becoming Ragnarök and burning Asgard.

    • @DLxxx
      @DLxxx Год назад +16

      Yeah. It also connects to the scene during Ragnarok where Kratos tells him to open his heart, as well as Thrud calling Atreus out for bringing Ragnarok to Asgard (and him saying "I made some mistakes"). It's surprising how much is bookended just from a small segment like this.

    • @martinc8965
      @martinc8965 4 месяца назад

      well... Atreus practically does that right after Heimdall's death when he returns to Asgard, he lies to Odin's face about whether he knows anything about it, but he plays dumb, and Odin goes along with the lie so as not to give away his disguise as Tyr, and later does the same with Thor in Niflheim, trying to persuade him not to destroy him and almost wanting him to rebel against Odin, otherwise Thor would not say that he "almost convinced him" in their fight. I understand that doing the same thing to someone who is not on Odin's side would add spice to Loki's mischievous personality but I'm not so sure they want to do that with this version of Loki.

      ?? The current ending still proved Heimdall's thoughts about him to be true though. Asgard DID burn, and so did many other realms when the pieces of Asgard fell. Atreus DID lie and manipulate. All of that would be a lesson in caution.

Atreus did all his manipulations and schemmings out of good intentions during the whole game, and he did also act out of emotion during stressing situations (both times he turned into Bjorn).
      I guess they cut it because it's too controvertial for the mainstream public. The Boy of War manipulated a depressed woman into suicide. There's no good way to convince someone to join a loved one in death and make it marketable to the general public. lmao.

      For Atreus, a confrontation with Sindri in that route might play out similarly to the confrontation between Dwalin and Thorin in The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies.
      For Freya, I'm certain there would be much more anger towards Sindri due to his machinations acting as a wild card in the prophecy and possibly making Freyr an unnecessary casualty.

I suppose something like Ragnarok wouldn't necessarily have to be a long event but... Idk. Something about the fact that we just straight up run in there, fight a few enemies, then Thor, then Odin, and that's that... Idk. Didn't feel right.
      I felt something akin to whiplash because lemme tell you, there were a few points along the main story when I thought "oh Christ get on with it...." but then when we get to Ragnarok I was like "woah woah hold up that's it??"

Why do we need another 5 hours before we go to Ragnarok? It's bad enough we have to fight a half hour to get to Surtr, and then another half hour to leave Muspelheim. They could have added a Secret Power Up for the Axe
      But in my opinion they should have done so that the First one you chose Fails
      So you need to take the Heart and go to the Other (so even if the Axe doesn't have Primordial Ice it isn't needed as Sinmara is bounded to die if Kratos tries to replace the Heart with the Axe)
      IMO they can still do it
      They make 2 Power Ups
      1)A Rune called Surtr's Blessing
      If you have it and go to Surtr then you get the Cutscene where He is able to become Ragnarok without Sinmara but if you don't have it then Surtr would die and then Kratos & Atreus would go to Sinmara
      Or you could get the Other Power Up that could be called
      2)Sinmara's Blessing or something and with it you could go to Sinmara but differently from Surtr she has only one outcome where she dies
      They could even do a Secret Option where You/Kratos can make Surtr & Sinmara merge without the Replacement Hearts thing
      Or even a more Secret One where both Surtr & Sunmatra fail to become Ragnarok so Kratos & Atreus collect both Hearts and find a way to make Ragnarok without them
      In this chase Ragnarok would have 3 New Models

    That’s some really interesting dialogue. I for one thought Atreus didn’t really learn a lesson from Brok’s death, it didn’t feel as impactful to him as it should’ve besides the initial shock. So him being consumed by silent rage to the point of lying to a primordial entity is a very interesting concept.
    Especially since Kratos allowed it, I feel as tho it sets a bad example for Atreus. If the developers wanted to double down on what Heimdall said about Atreus leaving cities in ruin I feel as tho this would’ve been the perfect set up. Show how his mind has the early stages of “the ends justify the means”.
    But if it did end on this and Atreus still left I feel as tho it would leave a mildly sour feeling in the player, as tho these two whole journeys were for nothing if Atreus left on a bad or worrying note. So I see why they went with a far safer, less controversial and more wholesome ending. But I must admit, the leaving Atreus on a worrying note would’ve been quite the interesting ending.

While his name is LOKI he is indeed a very different one form previous interpretations of the lore. Lying to manipulate others would have been something he'd do if he followed the prophecy as written and served Odin. The whole point of this story though was that our choices determine our fate and changing those choices changes our fate. It's certainly interesting, and really fleshes out the last few hours of the game. I think ultimately why it got cut was because of the way Atreus is written during the Niflheim segment. I understand in this particular moment he would have been, like Sinmara as Ragnarök, irrational and grieving but this almost hatred of Odin is still very out of character, especially for so late in the game. They probably just cut that section entirely and stitched the part where Ragnarök actually works on to the beginning of the questline where Surtr was intended to fail. The fact they got so far as to design and render Sinmara, cast and record her, indicates it was fairly deep into development when these concepts were cut.
    Ultimately I think the characterization of Atreus still being willing to forgive Odin, after everything, was worth an extra hour or two of gameplay we lost.
    If you return to Niflheim during the epilogue you can hear Sinmara sobbing in the distant. It almost seems fitting given her entire presence was cut from the game. Poor Janina Gavankar.

    Think of who they are here in similar circumstances, old kratos sacrificing things for vengence because he has nothing left is not the same as Atreus who still has his father and found family, alongside empathy toward Odin's madness and all that were roped to serving him. All of that would be a lesson in caution.

Seeing him revert to/finally accept Kratos' lesson of "closing your heart to it" makes sense as he comes to terms that his heart has caused more damage than good at this point. In my opinion, this makes the moment where Kratos tells him to open his heart more impactful. Plus it lines up with Heims' prediction where he says that Atreus' words cause cities to burn.

    Excellent video! I def thought it was weird that we never found Sinmara during the story. I thought for sure she'd come into play somehow, just based on everything we learned about her, that type of character development often means that will appear at some point. So in the end, when she never appeared, I was sort of bummed that we never got to meet her... Although, that story Def would've made Freyr's death less meaningful to me, despite what Freya says about it in the cut content

    I'm glad they didn't go that route. Sure, having Atreus experience the desire for vengeance would have added an interesting parallel to Kratos' story, but it's so out of character for him to feel that way considering everything he has gone through and learnt. It makes more sense to have Kratos experience vengeance once more when Brok dies. Vengeance is like a ghost that continues to haunt him, one that Kratos overcomes when he witnesses Atreus struggling to close his heart to the suffering of the Midgardians during the battle in Asgard.
    Although it is interesting, I feel like adding in the extra content of Surtr and Sinmara's story only steers it away from where it needs to go.

    oh wow… this adds a whole new layer to atreus and kratos regarding vengeance and lies, makes it more impactful when kratos tells atreus at the beginning of ragnarok that he was wrong and that he shouldn’t “close his heart to it”. now we know we was referring not only to what he said in gow2018 but also to how atreus used this teaching to justify a lie.
    all of this also explains why the whole “surtr becoming ragnarok” sequence felt rushed and the lack of aftermath. i wish they didn’t cut this, specially the aftermath with kratos literally apologizing to freya, we all know how much of a big deal it is for kratos to say he’s sorry over something.

      The difference here is the issue that people seem to not realize. Emotional manipulation and physical violence are two different realms of bad. Kratos was pretty solidly categorized as a bad guy in God of War 3 for his wanton destruction.
      What he did not do however, was emotionally manipulate anyone, and was instead the victim of it by the gods. Kratos helping deceive a woman into sacrificing herself for his own benefit is wildly out of character, _especially_ seeing as we know the limits he would go to in order to be with those he loved, and it would be another version of Hephaestus' tragedy in God of War 3, whom we know Kratos has regrets killing.

They should have kept all of this content in place, but I suppose they were trying to either finish it in time to launch in November or they were running out of room on the disc…lol J/K is was money! The game was already running long, so it wasn’t going to make any difference other than add more context and make the preparations feel more complete. Kratos is a general and he’d want to make sure that his army was indeed ready. Not to mention that we should have been able to go see Freyr dealing with the elves and maybe even helping him join us. I would love to see more post game content, but I suppose making DLC is more profitable and slows for more time to work on things.
