  • The tiny off-grid cabin my husband Dave and I built is finally done! Yip yip! After finishing the shell in about 8 days, Dave let me loose on the interior to finish it all. It was a big job- but a great learning experience. I had helped him on many of our log homes and cabin in the past but I was on my own on this one. Don't let lack of experience prevent you from DOING and TRYING! You'll learn as you go- just do it! I LOVE the way it turned out and will now take a couple days off to enjoy this little gem with my feet up and fire roaring!
Hope you enjoy and are inspired to build a cabin of your own!

The lights are powered by a portable power station that can be charged by solar. We will be adding solar to this cabin in the near future. You COULD live in a cabin this size.... we lived in a 12x12 off grid cabin for 2 years- and 6 months was with a baby. We will use cots to overnight but you could do a fold down bed like my table as well. As for bathing and cooking- just add in a tiny bar sink that drains into a bucket underneath the "kitchen" shelf- or just use a bucket. Also, buy a large kettle/pot for kettle baths. We lived for 10 years without running water in cabins- hauling our water 5 gallons at a time for cooking, drinking, cleaning, and bathing. It is possible. BASIC necessities.... that's all you need to live FREE! Thanks for watching the video everyone! Now who wants to build one?

My twenty year old daughter (after I told her about this video) said that she wished had been born in the past when you did manual labor and felt good that you accomplished important things. I sent your reply to her to show her she COULD choose to do that now. I’ll bet it would cure a lot of people’s anxiety and depression to live this way - simpler, but with a healthy set of friendships!

Keep design of a cabin simple to minimize cutting, especially of outer walls. Plywood comes in 4' x 8' sheets, so dimension your structure in 4' increments. 8' x 8', 12' x 16', etc. Take care of your back. Some materials are heavy. Full sheets of plywood weigh about 100 pounds per inch of thickness. That means 0.50" thickness sheets weigh 50 pounds, and 0.75" thickness sheets weigh 75 pounds. Don't overestimate your abilities with other lumber pieces either.
Take it from someone who knows, if you hurt your back you could be permanently screwed. Shoulders too. I've had all those surgeries among other orthopedic ones and none of it's fun. Not fun to injure, and not fun to fix.

I have a trick to share with you and other DIYers about the doorway threshold. You cut the 1 by wood the width of the doorway opening. Then, do not nail it in. Instead, use two or three hinges to install it so that threshold flips outward so you sweep the dirt right out the doorway.
Come on, that's genius and it works. I used a piano hinge on mine. 👍🏻🇺🇸

Well, I ended up here after watching a video of how to build a 10 x 12 ft deck/ floor...which turned into a cabin, which turned into 3 videos in the series, which then referred to another video of the completed cabin!
Quite forgot what I 'd come here for now!
I'm 81 years old and was up in the attic, via an unusual exterior way to get there today at 8.30 am, working out a position for an inside access position for the new attic access opening inside the house.. It is another old mud brick house on 1785 Msq of land, almost half an acre, I'm renovating for 2 people..and was bought for $5,000 AUSD.
I was interested in vid 3 by your hubby...boy, did he let fly! BUT, it is true, every word he said is fact of life. "If you think you can, you will...if you think you can't, you won't."
I lost everything in 2008, again, (first time in 1992)...so I left Australia at 70 years of age in 2011, to find where I could afford start again with no bank loans...this time on aged pension, I had to get my hands dirty and dig in the dirt...so I ended up in a country where I can't speak the language, bought a half acre of land with broken down mud brick buildings on it, no loo, no running water inside it, and mice everywhere, in a tiny village, with 3 shops, buses going past many times daily, PO etc...800 people, near the Ukraine/Romanian border. But it had potential and was so very cheap, like under 10k, AUSD, so I saved my pension and bought it, no one believed it!
Here you can agree to pay people off...no interest. They agree, as these properties are hard to sell.
8 years later, am happily fixing things here and at the other place. I hire local people from the village to do brickwork, but I am the foreman on all jobs assist with the build. Today we were building a room to house my lawn mower and cement mixer etc, and was teaching the man how to put noggins in between joists to stop the beams bowing and twisting, for an attic floor, etc etc. Then with my garden lady, who comes 3 hours a week, we are building a tiki type hut down the paddock a bit, hence the hunt for how to build a floor without all the stirrups, 2 foot deep of concrete etc. 3 hours later, I am confident the first video of this cabin build your hubby did is all I need, thankyou so much.
