The golf rules are actually simple as hell. The problem is with the referee in this instance. He decided to waste everyone's time by explaining them, instead of just ruling on the circumstance. End of story. All the ref's fault.
These PGA guys are no doubt elite talents, but there are probably hundreds of guys not on tour who are just as skilled. What makes the tour guys truly special are moments like these. Yeah idk where the rules official went but as he addressed the ball his stance had him touching the puddle and it wasn’t where he showed the official where he would be hitting the ball from.

What happened to "play the ball where it lies"? Holy crap. Golf has the weirdest rules of any sport. If they had taken any longer the puddles would be a non-factor via evaporation.
Yeah, he's saying that is why golf has weird rules. Because the statement, play the ball where it lies, makes it seem like a general rule for the entire game. It should then say, play the ball where it lies* not all the time though. lol
XVVvKk there’s a rule that allows the player to move the ball out of the puddle there so that it wasn’t as hard of a shot. Getting it out of the water is harder than it looks, so he wanted to use that rule.
sunday moon he has the option on either one actually but if he took relief directly from the path itself he would've had to drop left of the path and that would've left him with no shot
After all of that the front part of of his left foot was still in the casual water (the puddle he dropped from) when he hit the shot, meaning he still didn't take complete relief.
The drop rule is a stupid one. Move back 5 to 6 feet and place the ball. What difference does it make just as long as it would have the same kind of lie?
Benjamin Lee under the rules of golf, when taking relief you use a club length which is the longest club excluding the putter to mark the drop zone. You need to use the club that you Will be using for the shot to make a reasonable stance and swing if the cart path or water was not there to see where the nearest point of relief.
I don’t think people understand that he is taking long because he is trying to use the rules to his advantage in order to get a better angle back to the hole
at 9.40 "if his toe is touching the puddle its not full relief" - so Jordan steps into the puddle and hits the ball with foot in the water - what a farce
But not when his stance was in the original direction of play. He only has to be out of the water in the original direction of play, not necessarily in the new direction of play he had to take due to the branches in his way.
Unless lift, clean and place Rule is in effect, Speith should be assessed a penalty because he is NOT permitted to clean the ball. Cleaning the is permitted only in order to identify the ball. He violated the rules.
konstantinethegr8 if he did take direct relief from the cart path, he would have to drop left of the path since that is the nearest point of relief. However since he is in casual water he has the option of taking relief from the casual water. By taking relief from the water, he is able to drop in a part of the cart path where he could get a better shot. He could've then still taken relief from the new spot on the cart path but he still would've had to drop left of the path since it still would've been his closest point of relief even after getting relief from that puddle and that of course would've left him with an awkward stance and blocked by the tree.
william shultz thanks for clarifying that. Any normal player wouldn’t want to ruin their club by hitting off the cart path but i guess he gets new clubs fairly often
Wow. Take a driver and measure your relief behind the puddle. Drop it twice and watch it roll back in the puddle. Then place it where you measured it. Not that damn complicated.

the ruling about placing the ball right on the edge of the puddle is wrong - you have to chose an area where you know the player won't be in interference or else you have an never ending circle and the player will just keep on dropping seeking relief... and it's also wrong of Jordan to drop the ball and then place it on the slope because if he addresses the ball and it moves he'll get an automatic penalty.
