This show was so unique..nothing before or since has made such significant changes to people’s lives
Finding people, locking people up, reuniting people, freeing people, finding diagnoses for people..sharing information ..provoking thoughts.. educating people…scaring people..entertaining people..
    Truly one of a kind.
Edit: and so was the host! His voice has never been able to be replicated. People have tried it, but they all fail. Even Elvis and Prince can be impersonated

This show was ahead of its time in a way. Stack always said statutory rape or sexual assault and I don’t think he ever said “had sex with a minor.”
Also, Self’s story was hard to stomach

Definitely ahead of its time. Notice how he said "below average intelligence" instead of mentally retarded which was common parlance at the time. Also, whenever they discuss mental illnesses (e.g. schizophrenia and depression) you can tell the producers really did their research on the latest medical knowledge at the time. They use 21st century language.

@@ricardosoca7380 There was an early episode were he used the word "retarded" to describe a victim accused of killing an old lady (i forget the exact segment name), but that was the only time. Back then it just meant "slow"... also, most people were not constantly looking for things to offend them.

Yet nowadays you can't use the word "rape" anymore either, out of fear to trigger somebody. 2 steps forward, 3 steps back.

Who else wanted to punch that prosecutor in the Self case for being that arrogant about putting an innocent man behind bars? Prosecutors are more likely to push for convictions to push their careers than to ensure justice is being done.

No other show can duplicate the "the killer might be living next door to you and he's probably watching you right now" vibe that UM has. The show is that good. Add to that constant feeling of fear the voice of Robert Stack, a killer soundtrack, eerie mugshots, and realistic reenactments, and you get the total package. No other crime show can reproduce the atmosphere and chill factor created by the original UM. 👍

Unresolved. Self was denied parole in 1994 and eventually exhausted his appeals. In 2000, he died in prison without ever receiving a new trial. He was fifty-two. However, some of the investigators involved in the case now believe that his confession was coerced and that he was wrongly convicted. Convicted murderer Edward Bell has since confessed to Rhonda and Sharon's murders, along with the murders of several other young women. However, he has never been charged in those cases; he died in prison in 2019.

Reggie DePalma was and is a frightening case. It is good he was caught and he is now a registered offender most likely, but the fact he so brazenly (with a live in girlfriend besides) used an organization like the Explorers program to hunt for his victims is despicable. I highly doubt he was "17 years on the run" without additional victims, however.

However, some of the investigators involved in the case now believe that his confession was coerced and that he was wrongly convicted. Convicted murderer Edward Bell has since confessed to Rhonda and Sharon's murders, along with the murders of several other young women. However, he has never been charged in those cases; he died in prison in 2019.'' I hope that police man rots in hell for wasting Michael life in prison-you can't deny that he wasn't innocent.Period!

Segment 1: Yeah that's really sketchy. She should be able to remember the basics of when she was 3 and 4 years old when she is said to have lived with the Maguires.
Miriam's mother did vouch that the father had been committed for unspecified mental illness in 1945 and that he was emotionally disturbed. However she says that Miriam never left them or was taken from them to live with others.
But this is where it gets even stranger. It turns out there was in fact a Mike and Pat McGuire who lived in the Miami area at the time. Former friends recalled that they did take in a girl of about 3 or 4 years old for a time circa 1945-1946. A former friend who had watched the original broadcast sent Miriam a photo of Pat from the time period. Sadly, Miriam has not been able to find them as they had left the area years past. At this point, they are very likely deceased as Miriam herself would now be 79 or 80 years old if she is still alive.

Long after this show was over the widespread, despicable, psychological “treatment” by psychologists and psychiatrists of their patients was exposed. It was indeed called “false memory” but it was specifically induced BY the therapist/counselor. Many parents were falsely accused and imprisoned. Later specific “scripts” were found. Their patients were then , with hypnotism and other false modalities, convinced that their families had horribly abused them. Many received long term, paying patients and some fame and book deals along with day time talk show interviews! Many many lives were destroyed. This case seems sooooo very similar to those cases. @@ChristmasCrustacean1 No evidence that false memories are a real phenomenon, purely popular conjecture, and the false memory syndrome foundation is not accepted by any mainstream psychological body. On the contrary, the founders of the organization are known child and animal abusers and many are confirmed CIA agents, one of which who is most famous for injecting an elephant with a lethal amount of LSD. You can look all this up if you doubt me.

Could be that it was hurting to much to remember them, when she lost them, so she subconsciously erased the memories of that time from her mind. The traumatic event in her biological family was also rewritten in her mind so she could cope with the situation. Also, you only start to farm memories around the age of four and we don’t remember most of the things that happened around that age, so I’m not surprised she forgot it. And for why she remembers now: Perhaps an event triggered her memories.

So moving. I, too, was put into foster care at that age and it was really triggering to watch. Thank god my mom admits her dark time and has owned it. Still, very wierd to have that in your emotional history and it's rarely ever discussed. More common than people think.

They didn't discuss it because it didn't happen. I'm sorry you went through that but I'm afraid poor Miriam has got a psychiatrist planting stuff in her head. Look it up; it's happening and it's growing to a serious issue. There's no way that this happened and there's no record of it. Why would her mother deny it? Just doesn't add up.
