His remains have never been found or recovered to this day. Fair to say he's still a POW in Laos. Supposedly he was buried near the cave he was held in alongside another POW named David Hrdlicka who was held with Shelton in the same cave in Ban Nakay Teu which is near the Vietnam border and in 1992 the Joint Task Force Full Accounting team consisting of Laotians and Americans visited the cave he and Hrdlicka were held in and there was a bomb crater near the cave and talked to witnesses and former captors who saw their alleged burials and were permitted to excavate for Shelton's and Hrdlicka's remains but guess what? No remains were found at all. Their former captors and villagers in the area said Shelton's and Hrdlicka's grave were destroyed by bombing. Weird how one bomb can destroy one grave site isn't it? Either it's true their grave site was destroyed and their bones are now animal food or they were still alive but now most likely dead. Now the Pathet Lao caves are now a tourist attraction but the cave Shelton and Hrdlicka were held in is still off limits

Those of you wondering why Shelton was in that pit is because it was his punishment for his numerous attempts to escape like when he killed his 3 PAVN captors during interrogation. That is severe torture he endured. Being kept in a pit 24/7 with three guards watching over you and poking at you nonstop to ensure you stay awake. That must have given his son John nightmares when he had to film that scene and he did only one take because it really upset him plus when he did the scene when his dad killed the PAVN guards during interrogation it must've been emotionally draining. No doubt he cried after doing those scenes when filming this episode.

You don't seem to understand that when your loved one is a POW and not knowing what happened to him/her can emotionally and physically kill you. Marion spent 25 years trying to bring Charles and his comrades who were known to be POWs who never released home. Look at Bowe Bergdahl's parents Bob and Jani they had no idea of knowing how he was being treated when he was a POW. I am sickened and saddened by what he went through in captivity but he went UA aka AWOL from his post and that is a serious violation of the UCMJ and thanks to him 10 soldiers died looking for him and another ended up seriously wounded and now has brain damage. I prayed for Bowe nonstop because for one thing I care and two I am a former soldier ala U.S. Army. No I didn't fight in Afghanistan or Iraq. I was in the Army 1995-98 but I have a good heart and care

The PAVN and its militia were supposed to prevent shot down pilots from being killed and seriously hurt by the villagers. I’ve been to Vietnam. It’s a beautiful country and great people. The USA should have never been there. They had no idea what they were doing. The war was a civil war in Vietnam between two opposing factions. Robert McNamara the Secretary of Defense wrote a book about it. He admits the USA government didn’t understand it and blundered from mistake to mistake. And the USA would never win. The Vietnamese were fighting for their country and would never give up. So many lives lost and destroyed for no reason- war is always a losing proposition. Diplomacy and other efforts should always be the government policy

Ladies, I cannot stress enough how getting involved with the "bad boy" from the block will never end well for you. Can say the same for men too but somehow women many times lack the wisdom & retrospection until its much too late. Men, take note on the flipside that many ladies cannot appreciate good men since all they've been exposed to are dirtbags from the time they're little girls. Good people (whether they're male or female) will never ask you to do craziness if they care for you. RIP Rebecca.

The Shelton story stood out, makes me furious! I’m so sorry you family had to go through this horrible experience. I can only imagine the level of frustration! This really how our military puts our lives on the line at their expense and they glorify to be a proud American. Learning these types of things about our military is the exact reason why I never served and glad I never did.

The government lies so so much!!! And in these cases people go into military by choice there families have every right to know what and or were they r, and it’s there duty to protect them and bring them home at any cost!
    Much respect to our military!

I cried through the majority of the Shelton segment. I can’t imagine what they all must’ve gone through. It breaks my heart, and also angers about the government not caring. Why didn’t they just try and sort something with Vietnam? I understand wanting to avoid future war but POW should be released when the war is over no matter what! They aren’t their people to keep!!

This is one of many cases in which the US government failed its own men, in a most disgraceful way.. He should’ve been pulled out of there right after he made radio contact.. tragic story. May husband and wife reunite and rest in peace.
