I pulled a few heavy sumos in my time, just one night stands nothing serious
😂😂😂
You nastyyy 😂😂
That really made me laugh a lot 😂
Man that's funny
😂
Excellent. Not a wasted word, not a wasted motion. That's how everything should be taught!
Back when Larry didn't automatically mean Larry Wheels
What a great tutorial with no "bro-science" or ego, just an experienced lifter telling it how it is and giving genuine advice
Everybody talks about the benefits of pulling sumo, but I have to say as a person with long limbs and a short torso that even if I practiced sumo for a ridiculous amount of time, I will always pull more conventionally. Your individual bone structure plays a huge role in choosing your deadlift stance.
No shit...
Nostradingus Yes, but you should pull conventional because sumo will get you GREAT carry over, even if your sumo is way less then your conventional, it will make your conventional go up.
Nostradingus im the same, adding a sumo variation on my main squat day has had carryover i think
I can't speak for others, but for me I don't think sumo is a accessory for the squat or conventional. I am personally much stronger at sumo than conventional, but it is really hard on my hips and groin so I only pull sumo once every two to three weeks. I focus on snatch grip deads and stiff legs to build my sumo. I just feel personally sumo fucks with my squat to much to us it as an accessory.
Bulking dude
Yeah especially if you squat with alot of hips, it will mess with your other lift that uses the same muscles there is no question about it.
Thank you! Shall keep in mind the next time..
He has quads on top of his quads
KidCorgi.Com yo dawg, I heard you like quads
Definitely needed this , great video as always.
***** True love informative videos like these
InnovationYGO yo didn’t know you threw weight around YGO
mobb deep in the background tho
Word. instantlike
WOW COOL 👍
By far the best video on Sumo! He teaches concept, setup and execution in less than 3 mins vs the 20+ min other videos out there on the Sumo Deadlift. Great vid!
As I write this, I'm watching this video as I'm in the gym, learning how to sumo for the first time. I'll start light, as you recommend. Very educational; thanks very much!
Still going strong i hope?
It's great to see a lifter that actually looks FIT!
Thanks for a great technique breakdown.
Great video!
Respect for the mob deep in the background 🔥
This is how I deadlift been doing it for years. I am 6'3 and this lift actually saves a lot pf wear and tear on my back. On some jobs when heavy lifting is required they teach you wide stance back straight. Sumo style helps you maintain your center of gravity better and you use more of your legs rather than your back but sumo is not for everyone.
I agree. Im 17 and have been working out for 3 weeks now. I tried sumo first time today and when i failed a normal 130 kg deadlift i went straight for sumo and got it up quite easy. Idk if its because i have very long legs and arms with a short torso but it just felt reqlly nice
@@thegnome9529 2 years later, you still working out?
i thought i kept hearing my phone vibrate while watching the video...only to realized that it's the background music in the video...lulz
I prefer conventional deadlifts but I been playing around with sumo. Solid tips. Can't wait for my session to try this out
I just started pulling sumo this month and taking it seriously. This video helped clear up so many questions i had. Thank you!
Did Larry delete his insta account?
conventional deadlift max is 350, never tried sumo. will be interesting to see how much I can pull with sumo
Sumo deadlift is a back savor I love it better than conventional 👍👍👌
youngal9325 then you're doing conventional wrong
Yup im right there with you. My lower back had some injuries and sumo saves the back from taking the brunt of the weight after you get past the knees
youngal9325 same here. I can’t get conventional perfect enough. Could be an hamstring issue not sure but sumo is better for me at higher weights.
If sumo “saves your back” then your conventional form sucks...
@@ryansisco2492 my body type is completely wrong for conventional, my is completely horizontal in my deadlift set up which makes it really difficult for my back
He advised to squeeze the gluteals as hard and quick as possible, which I have done upon reaching 355 (which I don't believe is impressive compared to most)...I still can't compete with Nicki and Kim. D:
Nope, I'm a male. It just came to mind because a friend has me beat by 440 lol, and thank you.
Does he even lift? Chicken legs!
Mannimedia I know right, and what a girly face he has like wtf.
elmohasaposse Yeah can't even grow a beard!
Mannimedia You almooost got me there :3
Freakin bird legs man! haha
Are you absolutely so fucking dense as to not to see that was sarcasm?
At my high school, they pretty much make us do sumo deadlift or trap-bar deadlift. Very rarely will we be assigned to do a normal conventional deadlift. Sumo deadlift has worked great for me so far, and I recommend any lifter to try it out.
Anybody know what happened to this dude? I cant find him on insta
Thanks boss, this was very helpful
Yeaaa great Mobb Deep instrumental ;) :)
What the hell happened to this guy? Where did he go
What if you can lockout super fast but youre a grinder off the floor lol.
Amen
try RDLs or a one second pause at the bottom
Bart Kwan I noticed that with Larry's sumo, his quads are just about parallel to the floor, yet other instructors from other videos showcase a more (higher) 30-45 degree bend between the knees and the hips. How do you determine which is ideal? experimentation? Are there pros and cons to these varying stances? Thanks
The Electrocist I assume it all comes down to hip mobility and being able to get into a position were his quads are parallel to the floor and I would also think that limb lengths come into play aswell as stance width to get your quads parallel to the floor.
I think the main benefit of doing sumo is the use of your quads(aside from rom) so parallel is more effective in that sense
Know you should practice is sub maximal weight, but my first time pulling sumo i pulled 112% of my 1rm lol
Sick video in dope background music
This is the best sumo tutorial on youtube.
"Dom, when did you get so into booty?"
"When I started pulling sumo."
This is where it starts, you've been warned..
Just kidding, good video guys! :)
Excellent video. Quick and to the point, no stupid supplemental chit chat. Very educational
Tried sumo deadlift today at the gym today and used this video as a reference to correct my form. Gotta say it felt good!
I have long arms and long legs and im about 184 cm what is better for me sumo or conventional? (Btw i use conventional should i switch it to sumo? Or my body type isnt for sumo)
I have very long legs and arms also and have found that sumo deadlift fits me better. I am able to get closer to the bar and keep my back straight much better than with traditional.
I'm sorry, I lost everything you said in your beard. Dang it.
Great video and with the mob deep in the background.
I came back to this vid 11 months later and i decided to sumo deadlift a week ago and surprisingly ive been doing everything he said well except the HUGE breath. Natural lifters instinct can save you sometimes haha
Thanks! The advice I needed to boost my Sumo Lifting Confidence today!
While where is larry wheels?
he's definitely telling you some real wisdom by not rushing it..... once you get injuries you're not the same... work it up slow and gradual nothing will stop you
That mobb deep instrumental!
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen on sumos, this is how I do them but many videos I’ve seen on RUclips the body isn’t kept as upright and looks more similar to a conventional deadlift in terms of how the back looks. Good to see this version though as I think this takes the weight off the back
Exactly
his set up and pull is flawless
I thing that people who are good at deadlift, they are not very good at bench press. It has to do with each persons body type.
If i may ask Larry, how much do you bench?
Very nice video by the way.
Hard reality I still face is to stay in the 40-65% range. I love going heavy but technique is everything rn. Especially on a program
Sumo is still cheating lol no I kid but it really all is different strengths and weaknesses I pull conventional witch is more grip an rip sumo is more technically involved
I have to be flat on the bench and go straight down then up I cannot do that back scrunching. I have a powerlifter pissed off at me right now because I am lighter than him and can press more even though I have to do it like a bodybuilder. I am significantly shorter.
I hate sumo but this vid makes me want to do it more. Superb. Does Larry have his own channel?
It makes my flesh crawl seeing their knees bend like that. When powerlifters scrunch their backs up to bench press it hurts to watch it looks painful.
Good info. I like how you had shook ones playing in the background lol
It’s actually ‘Survival of the Fittest’ not ‘Shook Ones’.
why do people who do low bar have a natural transition to sumo? (I do low bar and am considering switching)
Sumo dead’s means….I want to load my spine and hips with more weight without working harder…..
Step 1 Remove your balls
Step 2 Pretend Sumo is as hard as conventional
Step 3 Cope and Seethe when other people point out that it isn't.
I've pulled my hamstring twice doing sumo and I'm still trying to tweak my form.. Tips?
Stretch
@@vegannegan9652 after or before?
@@rileyparker5668 Both is possible. But I would recommend after, because stretching before might reduced your strength for a while.
great video, honestly most videos on this lift should just be taken of youtube because this is all you need, no nonsense.
Sumo is better for shorter people whereas conventional is better for taller people.
This video is a lot of showing upper body form. Not a good demonstration but great audio.
Great instructions Larry, thank you! :)
good video but i dislike this position !!!! why do that ???stay in a deadlift very util for clean big loads !!! Bolton or Hall dont use it
Great tips and advice, I'm new to deadlifting, should I start out with this stance or go with the regular?
bluex610 try both stances. pick the stance that is more comfortable for you and you feel you will be able to move more weight in the long run.
*****
yeah that is true, but i think in the beginning the focus should be on perfecting your technique of your primary pulling style.
bluex610 Im 6,2 and regular deadlift never felt right because my knees where always in the way. So ive been doing sumo pretty much since I started lifting
Alternate
I used to pull sumo all the time or I'd cycle between sumo and conv just to work on both but this year I noticed my conv lift started to smoke my sumo. So now I just keep pulling conv it got me into the 400 club 😊
I used to just do normal deadlifts and my max was very light.... once I started sumo, my max went up by 150lbs over the course of 4 months
I needed to hear that 50-60%. my dumbass be maxing out too much
Just found this video. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 I agree with I’m sure the whole thread when I say: After seeing this video I would want you as my coach. Masterclass level.
Just watched Dan Green's video, he mentioned 3 common sumo mistakes one of them is hip(sit back too mch)too low which is exactly what he's doing in this video.
Background beats on point!
Perfect timed video. Gonna try this today
Wow a video that's not 10 mins long. Good job bro 👍🏼
I always do a sumo deadlift with a straight back as it is much easier on my back. 90% of the videos on you tube emphasize bending forward to execute the movement. This video validates what I'm doing is still effective. Thank You for posting...👍🙏
I use way too much lower back in conventional deadlift and I am not really properly using my legs, do you guys think doing sumo deadlifts will help me improve my leg activation and concentrate more on my legs just by the nature of the motion ?
Please help!!
great advice! and holy.... look at his quads!
Guys talk about ppl that never leave you alone when trying to lose fat and always keep on telling you how much did you lose or gain?
Talk about how to deal with such conversations coz it really is becoming a burden for me.
I admire this person's confidence and authority when he said "I have pretty good hip mobility".It shows Strength.God bless 😊
Jesus, this is an elite athlete but proves that cailer woolam is in a league of his own. Pulled 950 in competition and could do 860 conventional 😤😤😫
Bart Kwan Why is he using straps? Does he do all his training with straps until peaking for a meet? I've seen a lot of pro's using straps, but than read the exact opposite
Come on this guys hips are bulit to open up he is built for.sumo
What's the song playing in the background
We doing deadlifts till the day that we die! Survival of the meet only the strong will survive.
I've recently started lifting and my maximum is 236 lbs. should I go further? Asking this coz I'm an ametuar
Sumo deadlifts have made my hips more mobile than ever. Thank God for youtube.
one more thing , regular/ conventional reall pulls me forward im a really big upperbody and smaller shorter legs , so conventional allways was a fight to not get pulled forward , sumo keeps my back straight and center of gravity is allot more center
What's the song in the background?
Likanen etelä - onko kirkkonummi hereillä has the same beat, but i doubt you guys took it from finnish ug rap
Should I be feeling a twist in my knee? I feel my thighs point forward and my shins point out at the lock out stage. Thus my knee feel like it’s twisting and feels unnatural.
Lockout shouldn't be too difficult to lockout. The most important thing is being patient at the start, it will eventually break the ground.
whats the primary target muscles doing sumo dead ? and second and third ? and from a bodybuilder stand point is sumo worst the conventional ?
my lower back is a bit messed up from spending my teens sitting all the time and working as a taxi driver so this really spares my lower back from conventional(yes i keep my back straight i've had competitive lifters comment that it's fine but it just ain't right for me)
bro i think u have a bellybutton hernia , i hav one too , i am preattysure i got it swuating regular style , sumo style is way better , on back , abbs too , suo has let me lift heavier , and build more muscle , friggin such a good techniqe
Does anyone know if this dude is natty. Love his physique and am wondering if it is achievable naturally
Does anyone know what shoes he's lifting with? They look perfect for me but I can't find them!
Finally. An explanation that is not 10 minutes long
if larry says its friday..... its f**king friday alright!
YESSS (L) god I love deadlifting
I’m here five years later to switch to the dark side
Best video ever . No bullshit straight to the point
I thing that people who are good at deadlift, they are not very good at bench press. It has to do with each persons body type.
If i may ask Larry, how much do you bench?
Very nice video by the way.
Σπαρτιάτης Εθνικιστής not nessecarily true, if you have long torso and short femurs, you can be good at both movements regardless of arm length
Completely agree with the previous comment
I hare sumo but evertime I do conventional especially over 405 for reps my back starts giving me issues so I guess I'll give sumo a chance which is the only choice I have left really.
How'd it go?
