For conventional: I prefer pulling in socks because my feet are wide and flat... so every style of shoe feels weird to me. I just started training in sumo and wear chucks.
He didnt mention that you should have your scapula over the bar. and we can see that when he pulls the weight his body autocorrects his shoulders in right position and only then bar goes up
I use my Chucks while deadlifting because I already own several pairs and don't want to spend money on wrestling shoes (I already went broke when I bought some nice squat shoes). But if I did buy something, I'd either get the Sabo deadlift shoes or a pair of wrestling shoes. The Sabos are just wrestling shoes with a metatarsal strap anyway.
Could you make a video with a split for deadlift so you can add more weight every week ive been deadlifting for a month now and cant get over the 150kg my goal is to hit 200 kg
Squat University for years I have been doing conventional.Tried sumo today and I felt very uneven. As if I was twisting but I do suffer from rotated hips.
Ever since I tried pulling sumo for a couple weeks I’ve had this popping tendon toward the back of my knee. It feels like a hamstring or adductor. Any idea why or how to fix it?
dynamic warmup and dynamic tretch and do some pre-hab exercises...its likely the muscles/tendons of hamstrings/ABDuctors/it band are not used to the new movement pattern.
I'm the the kind of person who needs to squat wide with my toes out to break parallel. Does that mean a sumo deadlift may also be better for me mechanically? Or does it not really matter since my hips aren't breaking parallel on a deadlit?
FitAngie I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure sumo hits quads and glutes more than hams and glutes and the conventional deadlift hits more hams and glutes than quads and glutes. Obviously it depends on individual anatomy as well but that's what I've been told is true for the majority of people.
Jim Jones it also hits the quads I do agree but for me I feel it more in the glutes and hamstrings. I agree it depends on ones anatomy as well, I’ve tried both sumo and conventional, I do both but for my body I prefer the sumo more.
@@jimjones6901 correct. Sumo=mostly quads and glutes. Conventional=most hams, glutes, spinal erectors. Both hit all those muscles but with different emphasis
Vibram5fingers shoes are the best. They do require a correct running technique though, but it feels like running on clouds, sooo light. I suggest walking barefoot on grass/dirt during summers to prepare the soles and ankles strength. Calve raises also. They are the only footwear for workouts in my book 😁
Hey Aaron, got a weird question for you. 3 weeks ago I dislocated both shoulders and I would like to know when I can get back into squats and deadlifts. So far al I'm doing is some pt stuff and safety bar squats build with straps and a pad.
Sorry to hear about the injury! Have you seen a physical therapist yet? If you're not longer painful, its going to just be a slowly ease back into lifting (lifts like back squats or deadlifts because they're not over the head or away from the body will be easier to return to than overhead lifts as there's less demand on shoulder joint stability.
@@SquatUniversity yea I'm working with a PT now but he wants me to start deadlifting after 3 months like al my other lifts. I probbly give it a go with 1 plate a side after 6 weeks and work my way up from there. Thx
Yes go very slow on the return and use slow tempo movements. Using your stability exercises from PT before you pick up the bar can be helpful as well to prime strength and stability of the joint.
Hey Aaron, do you have any experience with pectus excavatum? If so, what exercises would you recommend? I have a minor case of pectus ex. and I want to improve the apperance of it.
I have a question. How can one find out if their quads are weak? What defect will you see in the back squat? Also, what will you notice on the front squat compared to the back squat in weight when the quads are weak? I have a feeling my quads are weak🤔
I prefer doing front squats to strength my quads over the back squat. It depends on ones anatomy to be honest, but for me I have built up my quads a lot doing front squats and have become stronger
I feel like I’d smash my toes getting them that close to the plates! 🤭🤭🤭. Nice vid! Great tips.
Haha - you have to be careful if you go super wide! And thanks! Glad you liked the video.
Super helpful, I recently noticed my hips shoot up in my sumo DL and was wondering what cue I should be focusing on!

Wrestling shoes for sure! More lateral force than deadlift slippers and great grip too!
Thanks for sharing!

I bought Sabo deadlift shoes but later noticed they are not that stable. I prefer Chuck Taylor's
Sumo is definitely a move I enjoy and want to get more proficient at
The side view with correct form and cues would have been helpful

Love the tutorial 💯
This is perfect timing! I’m an all conventional puller gal but was trying to program sumos for next week!
I'm glad you liked the video Amanda! Thanks for checking it out. How long have you been pulling conventional?

I love Sumo deadlifts, they are awesome especially for the glutes and Hamstrings for us ladies. thank you for this video

Can you make a video of the semi-sumo? It is a hybrid of sumo and conventional and I use it because I have short arms and long femurs! Thanks!
I'll see what I can do! Thanks for the suggestion Jorge!
Squat University Thank you sir!
Had this same question!!! I have long femur and really good mobility/ hamstring rom
Neither, I wear Vibram Five Fingers whenever I'm not squatting or overhead pressing (oly shoes for those)
How do you like the Vibram shoes?
Squat University I like them a lot. They take a little getting used to, especially if you want to run in them, but they just feel really good.
Vibram5fingers shoes are the best. They do require a correct running technique though, but it feels like running on clouds, sooo light.

If you're hips are too tight to sit deep in the sumo position, how do you open them up to be able to sit in it comfortably?
Increase hip flexibility by stretching specially static stretch after any workout.
Every time I try sumo I absolutely shred my shins with the bar and I cannot figure out what's going wrong. Like it's a GRIND against my shins.

Ever mash your toes that way? 😂
Also known as: how to break your toes in the gym! No thanks I'm sticking to regular DL lol

Same. I feel my quads are weak.
On squat easiest way to spot weak quad, if your hip shoot up but the bar dont move much. But its also gona depend how your body proportion

#AskSquatU after doing squat or deadlift pain in my hip
Train barefoot, peak and compete in Sabos
How do you like the Sabos?
Squat University tbh I think they’re only marginally better than asic matflexes. I only have them because they were a gift.
@@SquatUniversity i bought my sabo deadlift shoes in 2015 and they still serve me well
Why I am stronger in conventional than sumo
bro literally hit his toe at 3:05....let's not have your toes so fucking close to the plates fuck that
I'm not writing this video is bad but calling it the greatest sumo deadlift tutorial is ridiculous in my opinion.
I like this channel, but if U wanna see good sumo style, then look at Belkin, Belyaev and Pozdeev! Sumo aint American style)))
Thanks for the suggestion.
