It appears his legs are more straight from the beginning of lift compared to you saying squat lower, hips and shoulders rise together. @Mcdicks yeah no clue why gyms have mirrors in front of the stage or squat rack, it throws people off. Especially when there is a mirror on the right or left-hand side, it makes people turn their neck and injure it.
@@baam25th31 Fairly certain you do want to keep your head in a fixed position looking straight forward as you deadlift. The exaggerated motion of the head helps you to activate your lats, which is good for multiple reason. Its going to keep your shoulders safer, its going to build tension across your entire back to keep your lower back safer, as well as increase your overall stability on the lift. Its also going to help prevent against rounding your back. The additional benefit is that you can conveniently see yourself doing the lift, at least from 1 angle, helping you visual inspect your form. Of course recording the side angle, or having a second party look at it for you is beneficial though. Just take a look at his lift from 13:15 onward.

Jeff, due to previous injuries, I have not attempted any deadlifts in about the last 35 years. Although I’ll be turning 60 next month, after watching this video I decided to give it another shot. Now that I am doing them right and safely, I love this exercise. And for lack of better terms, I think I’m addicted to it. THANK YOU(!!) for this video…not to mention the other 2 dozen or so I’ve watched.
@@JohnM... I would use 70% of your 1 rep max once you have mastered the exercise using moderate weight. Dont be in a rush to go too heavy, us older folks cant afford the recovery time :)
I didn’t do deadlift because my lower back issues until last month. And I got a belt to help and I can feel my lower back is stronger and doesn’t hurt as much when I bend over. I’d say it def help with lower back issue if you lock your back and engage core when you lift
Thanks Jeff. Just starting out at the ripe age of 34, did 3x10 with 30kg and lower back is hurting. After watching this i realise alot of mistakes were made. You are a blessing to everyone who lifts.
I actually injured my lower back during deadlifts too. Thanks to the people who actually work at the gym and never tell you that you're doing something wrong. I stopped hitting the gym for 6 months and It's been 5 months since I've returned. My back's a lot better now but I'm afraid to go heavy I'm rarely adding any weight, just less rest time and more reps/sets. Do you have any advice? Since you've been through the same situation, I'd suppose you'd know.
Just wanted you to know that I am a 58-year-old man and I could not do one pull-up when I first started watching your videos seven months ago. The combination of my keto diet and intermittent fasting combined with your videos that motivated me to a five day a week workout has literally changed my life. Oh, by the way I do three sets of 10 pull-ups now. Thank you.

Jeff: Your kinetic chain is all off when you pick up your water bottle! Your drinking is totally inefficient! You're holding your bottle in a way that stresses your shoulders too much! That's going to lead to tendinitis!! 😂😂😂😂😂 JK
I've been doing deadlifts wrong for a very long time, not to mention I have a bad habit in rounding my back and it sucks that no one in the gym including the trainer never discussed this issue with me, thanks Jeff, you are our gym Guru.
Thank you for this video. Hadn't deadlifted since H.S. Coaches trained me as best they could back then. 20 years later saw your video and decided to give it another shot...Best decision ever! Now deadlifting in comfort with gains.
Edward ¡999 yep. Not my first time watching this video. I knew almost all of this before watching but enjoy a refresher to make sure I haven’t developed any bad habits
Thank you man, I just started lifting two months ago and I was searching for a good explanation on how to deadlift, I have done it once and it just didn't feel right. Now I know what i have to do and I can't wait to go deadlift. Thank you once again. :D
Started a deadlift strength program that goes very slow but builds up over months...this is the perfect way to get all the important steps right to create a safe foundation, thank you so much Jeff
VERY THOROUGH! I like the way you divide it. I would never have thought of the lat activation first, leg lift second, then posterior chain. Great explanation.
But what he said until that was very necessary. This isn't a lifting video, it's teaching you to avoid spinal injury. Seeing him just lift won't teach anything
So much value in this video....and he gives it away for free. 4 Million subs for a reason! So glad to be apart of this. Remarkable fitness knowledge just following the channel for years past and years to come! Great work jeff! but like you said, work isn't really work when it's a habit! cheer mate
Jeff, I can't thank you enough for your videos, I love how comprehensive this guide is for deadlifts. I haven't done them in a long time and there's a lot to them so I love how you broke it down. I feel so much more confident to do the lift now. Thank you!
I have this weird obsession with being sure I’m using proper form on my lifts. Multiple times mid workout I stop sometimes and skim his videos to be absolutely sure. Great teacher.
it's definitely not strange, I'm the same! Way too scared about potential injury lol, plus I want to make sure I'm getting all the benefits from my lifts

most thorough yet foundational explanation. Keep it simple. No involvement of "angle" checklists that don't take into account the anatomical variance of any lifters architecture. So many of my trainers/mentors have promoted pushing back with the hips, keeping the angle of the torso above parallel and critiquing the idea of "squatting" the bar on the lower half. yet in this video you literally went against every single one of those cues. The pushing hips back and out with the demonstration of how it rounds the lower lumbar curve was honestly so eye-opening. THANK YOU, as someone who has never been able to successfully progress my deadlift without significant burning/firing of my erector spinae I hope to take these cues and see how they do.
Today, I tried this technique and it worked tremendously! I'm so happy to get this right. Thank you so much. I was always afraid of deadlifts. Now this is really fun to do. I can't express my thanks to you Mr.Jeff.
I wish I had these kind of tutorials back when I started lifting in high school (but that was before RUclips existed!). Thanks Jeff for all the incredible advice! Because of you and your programs, I worked my way up to my first ever barbell deadlift yesterday and it felt great. I'm in the best shape of my life at 35 and getting better every day. You're making a difference!
I am a beginner and just started going to the gym and these videos are so informativ! I really want to stay injury free and I hope that I can achieve that with these video. Can you so much :)
I think he missed one thing, don't look straight forward, it bends your neck and could cause injury. Make sure you're looking slightly downwards at the start, which straightens your entire spine
You won't get seriously injured, but when you start really challenging yourself (as most people who watch this guy probably never will) you'll very likely upset the disks in your neck. I've done it, it hurt, and then I stopped doing it. It wasn't a huge deal.
Jeff I can't thank you enough for your "checklist" series. They have helped me maintain great form to stay injury free and have great gains! You the man!
Thanks Jeff, I followed your procedure and successful felt the progress. I used to deadlift 150 Lbs., but my last session I did 220! huge boost for me and inspiration to do more.
Even if I end up watching a different video on workouts I always check it back with the real one here just to make sure what the man himself says about it. Always great content, this man is a gift to us all.
I just saw a great video on this, but still came here and got just the right amount of information I need to feel confident about trying these again. 💪
You are the best...Jeff! Your Videos should be recommended for every Beginner gym enthusiasts because the way you break down every part of the exercise its excellent. I am writing this because no trainer explains us as the way you explain Because I am from Pune, India. Here Whenever i want a detail info about any exercise i only watch your videos and you always prove me right. So Thank you Jeff. From India
I was making several mistakes when doing this exercise which is why I'm glad I started with light weight. After doing this exercise twice I decided to check here for the proper way to do it before adding enough weight to hurt myself and I'm glad I did. Hopefully now I can start doing this exercise safely and eventually start adding on weight.
You’re doing rite. I haven’t deadlifted in years and just started back using light weight to polish my form. If you’re doing it rite, you will feel it all over. Honestly, makes me only want to do this exercise 😂😂😂😂😂
This video fixed my deadlift problems. I was stalled out on this lift. Couldn't get any power off the floor and always waking up sore the next day. AFter watching this video I've been really focusing on visualising the first part of the deadlift as a leg press, and that has pretty much solved all of my problems. I can now lift more, I have power off the floor and I don't wake up sore! In hindsight, I think I was trying to hip-hinge the bar from the floor, when I should've been focusing on the first part of the lift as a leg press! Thanks heaps Jeff. I live in a remote part of the world and you're the only coach I got :)
This is an excellent tutorial on deadlifts. I have been stuck at 165. I have lifted 170 almost to my knees but then been unable to complete the lift. I really like how he broke down the first part of the lift (using the legs to lift the bar to the knees) and then grabbing the glutes and hamstrings to complete it. My trainer wants me to go for my PR again next week. I want to practice these fundamentals while setting my mindset to Finishing it. Thank you so much
This man changed my life...I don't watch this channel as much as I use to but...With out this channel I would not have the quality of life I have now...I learned so much about my body and why i might have this pain or that pain. How to work out, with out killing your body in the process
This is perfect @Jeffcavalier, Thank you. I know you have issues with your knees but I think alott of us guys need and would benefit help with Squats from you aswell, including myself. This attention to detail is rare on RUclips. Thanks again @AthleanX
I'm so glad I came back to this one. I first watched this years ago when you first posted it. Due to unrelated injuries, I have been forced to stay away from the deadlift. And I want to begin doing this one again. * Jeff, thanks for all that you're doing man.*
Just tried these tips yesterday in the gym and it was whole different the way I did and the fatigue was on another level and actually less pressure on my lower back which was always a problem I got when doing “deadlifts”(like I was doing one in a right way…) Huge thanks Jeff🎉
Jeff I absolutely love the way you break down the mechanics of everything you do to keep your fans safe. Can't say thank you enough!! I was watching another female do the exact same thing and I laughed when she said if you are bleeding from your shins you are doing it right. Omg. Some people should not be allowed to teach on YT. Thanks for being the best at what you do!!! Kudos!!!
Very well executed video on the Deadlift. Anyone following the guide should easily be able to avoid injury. I think some novice lifters would benefit from some reminders on how to breath or use the Valsalva maneuver.
Fantastic tutorial! I just started adding deadlift to my gym routine and I feel a lot better about it having seen what the proper technique is and having it explained so thoroughly. Thank you!
I have stopped so many kids at my local LA fitness who were lifting bad, usually doing upright rows with heavy weights, but last week I stopped some high school kids who were teaching a new guy how to deadlift, and totally had his lower back rounded. I jumped off my bench quick and was like "hey fellas, maybe you should teach him to not round his lower back so he doesn't slip a disk" . The guy teaching thanked me for the reminder, and even corrected his own form. I that if you approach in a friendly manner, with polite suggestions, most people will thank you.
You can do heavy deadlifts more often than just once a week but you have to adjust the volume and intensity accordingly, for example I deadlift heavy 3 times a week but I only do 1 set
Wow this helped a lot! I always see so many diff variations when watching other ppl perform this move. And never really knew what was actually the correct form. This summed it up and gave extra pointers, Thank you!
Just started really working out in my home gym and I couldn't get the squat to "feel" right. After watching the video, it clicked as to what changes I need to make. Thanks for providing so much information in this video and not just showing you lifting, but explaining the why....great video
I just learned to deadlift this week with my trainer. He has me place my hands one under one on top but after watching Jeff I can see the benefits of hands on top. I know Jeff caters his videos to the men but as an older lady who loves weight training , Jeff's videos are a tremendous help for me. I just don't benefit from watching lady trainers on RUclips...their goals don't match mine...which is overall strength and conditioning vs theirs which are toning n looking good ...thank you Jeff for all your helpful tips
Love your videos. Finally feel like I can do these safely without having to experience tightness in my back afterwards! I can’t thank you enough for this info
if you start from S1E1 and watch one episode every week you will be finished season 7 by december 2018 this is what i'm doing starting next week to get over the season 8 long-ass wait lol :((
Out of all the videos I watched of “how to” do a dead lift…. You were the best one who explained it, the other 3 videos were low key confusing: you know what’s up
Jeff, you should mention how to properly breathe for the heavy deadlift and squatting, or any heavy lift for that matter. Basically how to properly stabilize the core. Thanks!
Thank you! I’m preparing for my first deadlift competition (just for fun!). I am a 5’5” girl and I am aiming to lift about 220 lbs when I compete. This is very helpful!
Jeff, I know I am late to the party. But I really want to thank you for this vid. I have always skipped deadlifting because I always ended up with lower back pain after the excersize. Today I decided to search, hoping you have a step by step video for this. And low and behold I did the excersize today with way more weight than I used to, no back pain whatsoever. I had a tendency of pulling immediately when I go to lift from the floor, but this time around I pushed from my legs at the bottom until the bar was at my knees and then pushed. The entire form you teach here is on point. Thanks man, I no longer hate the deadlift 👌🏾
I watched this video on deadlifting, then i watched a deadlifting video by Layne Norton. Norton looked to me as if he were rounding his back, lifting insanely heavy and then slamming the weight back down to the ground. So it looked to me the weight was controlling him rather than him controlling the weight....my back hurt after watching his vid. I watch alot of youtubes on weight training but i've come to my own conclusion....That Jeff seems to know so much more than the rest of em.I will continue watching athlean x youtubes on lifting, they make much more sense, are much more in depth on all levels and i can fully relate. Also nice that the guy you're watching isn't 300 kg's and on juice. Jeff's physique is realistic. Keep up the great vids.
@@missstone7846 I did a bit of it some years back but was always very careful to not round any part of my back. I could have lifted heavier but chose not to because i wanted to keep good form. I've been so confused as to when to bend/unbend the knees and when to move the hips. This is the first video that addresses this in a matter that I understand! I also read lots of articles, also scientific ones, but now it's clear.
Very important cues Jeff. Most people ain't aware of the initial push off the floor and they perform something like a Stiff Legged Deadlift. Keep it up man!
just learning and trying out deadlifts for my first time, ive heard it could be one of the most dangerous lifts if not done properly, but I found this video very helpful and informative for safe deadlifting. thanks!

Hey, how much should a mature beginner lift? I’m 53 btw.
@@JohnM...
I would use 70% of your 1 rep max once you have mastered the exercise using moderate weight. Dont be in a rush to go too heavy, us older folks cant afford the recovery time :)
@@JohnM... lighter the better till comfortable with correct form. 80-135lb or less is plenty to learn with. Jmo
keep it light and take your time. It's one of those exercises that begs for more weight to be put open. But you need to curb those thoughts.
I didn’t do deadlift because my lower back issues until last month. And I got a belt to help and I can feel my lower back is stronger and doesn’t hurt as much when I bend over. I’d say it def help with lower back issue if you lock your back and engage core when you lift
The anticipation of you doing an actual deadlift is killing me

I actually injured my lower back during deadlifts too. Thanks to the people who actually work at the gym and never tell you that you're doing something wrong. I stopped hitting the gym for 6 months and It's been 5 months since I've returned. My back's a lot better now but I'm afraid to go heavy I'm rarely adding any weight, just less rest time and more reps/sets.
Do you have any advice? Since you've been through the same situation, I'd suppose you'd know.
Watching because I had tightness in my low back after deadlift. Excellent information, thank you
Just wanted you to know that I am a 58-year-old man and I could not do one pull-up when I first started watching your videos seven months ago. I wish youtube require notes why when their Gods have been proven wrong, their ego just can't admit that. Instead they argue, shout and scream.
He was dead wrong, if he's half the man he claims to be, why won't he make a video addressing it? Potential millions could fuck up their backs, but his pride prevents him from doing the right thing.
Lets make no mistake, this is a business empire. His only loyalty is to his business model, at the expense of some folks back in the future.
Then again, its the nature of sheeples to be finally led to the slaughter house.
Before you make up excuses, first address the simple fact, that he was wrong.
Once you've come to terms with the truth, (that he is wrong), then ask yourself why nothing as been done to rectify the problem?
Then ask Jeff why he hasn't rectfied it. ask him why not?

most thorough yet foundational explanation.

After doing this exercise twice I decided to check here for the proper way to do it before adding enough weight to hurt myself and I'm glad I did. Hopefully now I can start doing this exercise safely and eventually start adding on weight.
Did you start adding weight? How has it been going?

Heavy deadlifts are usually one day a week. They fry the nervous system and need time to recover.
You can do heavy deadlifts more often than just once a week but you have to adjust the volume and intensity accordingly, for example I deadlift heavy 3 times a week but I only do 1 set
I do dl every 4 to 5 days with 73% of 1 RM, 3 x 9, total 27 reps.
i squat twice a week, 95kg 3x 6-8. tuesday and friday
