Workshop Organization with Small Parts Organizers and Storage Cabinets - Cabinetmaking

- I've tried different organizing solutions in my workshop over the years, but it's time to something new and improved. My method of using peanut butter jars and deep drawers are not efficient for organizing small parts, screws, nails, and furniture hardware.
My new plan includes installing some cabinets and using small parts organizer boxes to store all these parts. After visiting a number of stores and doing some online research, I decided to buy four HDX Organizer boxes and a Someline Small Parts organizer box (see links below). I designed and built a cabinet for these organizer boxes. Here are the two previous cabinetmaking videos in this workshop organization series:

As I started to fill the first HDX organizer box with nails from the peanut butter jars I as using, I discovered that it works more efficiently if you keep large nails parallel to each other. That way you can get more nails in a smaller footprint. The HDX box has some fixed dividers and some removable dividers so you can customize the size of the areas you use to store parts. They also interlock so you can have two boxes connected, which make them easier and more efficient to transport outside of the workshop. I'm quite impressed with these organizer boxes.
The Someline small parts organizer box works really well for storing the furniture parts I use in my workshop. When I researched what box to purchase, I found that Someline had a higher quality latching system compared to others, so its more durable and should work for years to come. As I unpacked the organizer box, I was also impressed that it came with labels and a marker. This was useful when I loaded up some number 10 screws to label the size and length to easily identify the screws. I like this so much, I may end up buying another one.
I had two sets of organizer drawers. One had hard plastic drawers, which I got rid of because the drawers break when I drop them. The second organizer drawer cabinet has flexible plastic drawers, which are more durable and work well for me to store screws in my workshop. I often pull out a drawer and take it to my workbench when building projects. This makes screws very accessible for me so this solution works well. I also added an adhesive measuring tape strip to the top edge as a convenient way to measure screws when I want to return one to the right drawer.

This really soothes my organising soul. The jars you have left seem to be still creating dead space. Have you seen that hack of screwing the lids to the underside of a shelf so you can still access them without them stealing valuable space? 🤔
If you have a cluttered storage system, your less apt to want to do any work in your shop. The 39 drawer black cabinet you have is helpful, but takes up wall and counter space. I threw out three and kept one of mine (I also threw out two plastic organizer containers. Moved what was in them to three drawers in one of my tool box cabinets. Made open slots for small hardware, bolts, screws, and washers. I pull a drawer out and see all at a glance, with nothing resting on them.. I have three upper and lower tool boxes and a additional lower tool box cabinet. So I have extra drawers to do this.
I also have a 6'x8' storage closet in my shop area. Two of the walls are shelved out. Storage for tools, hardware and finishing supplies.
My dads' workbench has twelve drawers. Each drawer has about 80 slots. All the weight from the hardware, bolts and screws, make it one heavy workbench.
Wow, that sounds like a great workshop environment. I agree, and organized space is a productive space. I'm kicking myself I waited this long to tackle this ares of my workshop. Scott

My shed and workshops are full of plastic apple sauce containers, about the same size as your peanut butter containets. I recently bought a 27 drawer metal cabinet and a big metal office cabinet for my larger pieces and chemicals, I have been thinking about getting a system for smaller bits, those little cases don't work for me, I am going to the try the small parts one you have on your wall. I've been using Milwaukee Packout cases for some of my small and medium size parts. They have a thin size case in two sizes that work pretty well. I also made these small boxes out of 1/4 inch plywood that I glued and pin nailed together that fit in storage drawers. I also put a small cross piece on top that is the same width as blue painters tape. I write what the screw size or part is on the tape and can change it simply with a new strip of tape. They are easy to take out and use anywhere in the shop.
I really like your choice for "tiny" parts. I'm going to look at a couple of those!

I listen to new country on the local radio station. I have the option for bluetooth on that stereo, but I like to hear what's going on in the community and the weather between the songs. Cheers. Scott
I don't promote misc. When there is a container like that, the cleanup goes into the miscellaneous parts bin w/o thought. What I do is sort to the next closest space.
I have a Stanley sorter case like your HDX and I will put the misc screw right on top of the closest match. Example I will add a 2.5" course thread pan head right on top of my 2.5" course thread drywall screw bin. I try to use the odd ball first since it's on top but I do have the ability to reach around it if the project deems matching screws.
A second option is to break up your miscellaneous into smaller batches to add to the HDX. An example would be take all your size 8 no matter what the length, head style or material and put them in a bin. Then do it for size 10 and 12 to make the misc jar disappear.

What type of wood are you using for these cabinets?
The cabinets are mostly a mix of cherry (the darker wood) and maple. The cabinet that holds my tool cases is made out of mahogany as I was using left over plywood to make these cabinets. Thanks for watching! Scott

You'd be shocked to witness the waste I have. I have seen people throw 3 times the hardware away you just organized. If they would have paused and done some conservative math they'd have been shocked at their stupidity too.
That's too bad. Habitat Re-Stores are a great way to donate unwanted hardware. I have metal waste extracted from furniture and I store it in a container to give to scrap metal recyclers instead of throwing it in the trash. It's one of the ways I reduce the impact of my workshop. Scott
