How To Replace a Rear End Differential (Chevy Suburban)

- In this video, I wanted to give you guys a step by step tutorial on how to remove and replace the Rear End Differential on a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe. I definitely feel bougie for having a lift and an extra man to help lol. There have been many times where I've had to replace rear end differentials in my front yard all by myself. So yes, it can be done at home in your driveway, but you'll have to get a little creative if you don't have some of the equipment that I use in the video. It can be done.
Anyway, I'd rate this job a 7 out of 10 (10 being the hardest). Simple tools are needed, and I mention them throughout the video as I go along. I try to cover as many of the fine details as I can during both the removal and installation processes.
Don't forget Differential Fluid. Call up to Auto Zone or your favorite parts store and get the correct kind or you can always use good ole Google to find this out as well.

Removed and replaced the rear end on my 04 Avalanche in my driveway last weekend and it went perfectly because of this video. Didn't have to bleed brakes or compress springs.

I wish you the best of luck and it should be better on the ground.Tip when you are about ready to remove it put the jack stands on the frame and put the wheels back on if you took them off with a jack lower the rear end down , you should be able to roll the rear end much better than dragging it
@@AlexTheCarDoctor we got the old rear out today. There wasn't enough clearance for that. Plus our jack stands were in the way. We just cleared the springs. With the Jack all the way down. We pulled the rear out one side. good tip I'll have to remember it in the future in case I have to do another one. Thanks again.

I did notice something different on mine it has some type of an air ride setup. Any advice on that?. just below where you're having an issue with the bolt stripping out. Is a little control arm on each side. With a little ball joint that I had to pop off of each side. I didn't notice that on yours. My Suburban is a 2002.

Great video Alex. You can use a box end wrench to slip over the tabs, usually 13mm to make it easier to get those parking brake cables off.

I need a new rear end on my 2004 Tahoe but I’m thinking about rebuilding it. Would it be easier to rebuild or just by a new one?
I use a hose clamp tool . It’s round and gets around the entire clip . Still have to work it but it’s pretty quick
E-brake bracket: A tv cable crimper will go all the way around the e-brake clip and crimp all of the tabs at once and allow you to slide that cable right through the bracket easy.
I've also seen people use a socket, slide the socket down and use one that's just big enough to fit over the tabs then it'll push them all down at the same time maybe give a wiggle if its stubborn.
So my suburban is making some weird noises when I drive my pinion seal nut has been loose a few times I fixed but now it’s making a really loud howling noise do you think it’s the rear end or a wheel bearing? How would I tell? Thank you.
You can pull the diff cover and on the ring gear it will have the axle code and the gear ratio on It

Relieve pressure from the spring with a screwdriver. Way easier
A 10mm socket will push them tabs in on the ebrake cable easiest way to do it
Use and over side socket on the cable to push in the clips

Hey Alex,The Car Doctor i have a question will a 2012 rear end off a Tahoe fit on a 2008 Suburban Ltz?
I’m not good with parts interchange. I will like to think it will work but the gear ratio may be off so your speedometer will be wrong and you will have to get it recalibrated

Having this done soon. Is there a need to drain and wipe out the replacement diff replacing the cover and gasket as well if using a used diff?
If it’s used I would definitely drain the old one and replace the rear cover seal second to make sure there’s no metal shavings in the new one

My 09 f150 has 3 chipped teeth on big ring when changing the rear diff fluid last week, pops when turning sometimes, give it to me straight how long does she have left Doc?

Something may be loose. Have the guy check back over his work or get a second opinion
