One reasons why I love Monster Hunter series the Creators kind of got it right with Wyverns and Dragons in the game they made Wyverns the most common type of monster and they gave the legendary status and apocalyptic power to the Eldar Dragons even gave Eldar Dragons the more fantasy dragon appearance especially Fatalis.

Some things to point out/ set straight:
1: D&D made a fantastic spreadsheet/ family tree of the Draconian species and who have this many pair of limbs and wings!SUMMARY below or Google it! Dragons ( 4 legs, pair of wings, higly intelligent, lots of breath weapons), Drakes ( 4 legs no wings beastly can have no breath weapons or just bites ), Wyverns ( 2 legs pair of wings, vrnomous bites/ tail and instinct based ), Wyrms/ Linnorms ( just a ginormous draconian like snake, can be intelligent, can have breath attacks ), Lungs ( " flying " beasts with no wings but usually some legs, think asian dragons, very intelligent and magical )
2: The "dragons" in ReignOfFire/ GoT/ House of Dragon, partly Souls games Skyrim, partly LotR etc..are trendy tropes based on realistic potrayal if they could exist in reality since NO mammals/ reptiles can have 3 x pair of limbs. THERE. A short summary.
3: True FANTASY dragons are depicted as six limbed, 4 legs/ arms, pair of wings. WoW, D&D, Pathfinder some Souls games etc got Dragons done correctly.
So you got Fantasy take on these animals and the Realistic one. The latter could be called Dragon/ Wyvern hybrids or crossbreeds. Wygons, Draverns so to speak.

Nice video. Fun stuff to think about, especially how imagination is inspired by reality. Though my take on dragons and wyverns is still the same. They don't exist and therefore if someone creates a story, movie or game and calls something a dragon or wyvern then it's fair game. That's why dragons are my favorite animal, the only limits to them are the imagination. I'm surprised you didn't mention the significance of wyverns in Monster Hunter. Almost everything in that game is a wyvern. Bird wyverns, flying wyverns, brute wyverns, piscine wyverns, fanged wyverns, almost everything is a wyvern. Then again, I don't know if you'd want to touch upon games or if you just want to stick to film.

Don't get me wrong I love dragons but I don't it's healthy to get upset over how many legs it has. If anything I'd say dragons are probably the most malleable of all mythological creatures. I've seen dragons twisted into so many different shapes and breathe almost anything you can think of. But they still somehow manage to be recognizable as dragons.
As a side note I personally prefer Wyverns they just look more like something that was actually meant to fly. I've always kind of felt that the typical 6 Limbed dragon looked kind of awkward.

There never was a universal classification for European dragons. The only time period and place to make such a distinction was 17th century england, and even then it was only to categorize coat of arms dragons. No other time period or country every made such distinction, and the only reason anyone even looked into it was the rude autistocrats running around getting mad at people for not conforming to the categories of D&D.

There are two different type of Wyvern. one can be any kind of monster or creature with 2 hind legs and wings double as forearm/legs. And then there is the Greek Wyvern (pronounce 'wi-vern' and not 'why-vern) which actually is not a wyvern (body type wise) is doesn't use it's fore legs to walk when on the ground. All this back and forth on what make believe creature should be called is so silly. Dragons and Wyverns do not exist and whatever mythology we refer to is that's depiction of what it is. George Lucan called Chewbacca a Wookie when in our fairytales, that Wookie was clearly Sasquatch. It's not our universe so it's silly to argue what Chewbacca is. If GRRM calls a 10-legged flying thing that breaths fire a dragon or a 2-legged thing that flies and breaths fire a dragon, it's his universe and its then a dragon. If Eastern Chinese mythology calls Mushu a dragon, then it's also a dragon

Correct. There never was a universally accepted classification system. There wasn't even a singular classification system for all of Europe. In fact, the only time period or place in Europe to ever make such a distinction between 2 or 4 legs was 17th century Heraldric scholars to categorize coats of arms, and they still considered the 2 legged type to be a category of dragon. They didn't write anything about being smaller or dumber, or anything. The term dragon is far older than that, and the modern distinction is simply from the D&D monster manual, and that's it. No other intellectual property is beholden to it. If you wish to write a fictional universe your dragons can have 2 or even 0 legs and you can still call them "dragons".

@@dragonking5852 And you are correct, because there never was any universally accepted depiction of a dragon. There was only ever one time period in one European country, 17th century England, to make the 4 vs 2 legged distinction, and that only applied to the dragons on coats of arms, and they still considered "wyvern" to be dragons. They didn't have any of the stinger or smaller, weaker, or dumber added. That all comes from D&D. That is it. 17th century coat of arms classification doesn't have authority over what the rest of history or the rest of the entire world gets to call a dragon, and neither should D&D or any other Wizards of the Coast Intellectual property. So, if you want a fire breathing snake with wings and no legs at all to be a dragon in your own fiction, then you are perfectly correct to do so.

The only historical information on any European classification system stating a dragon has 4 legs and wyvern 2, is 17th century coat of arms classification. No other European country ever made such distinction, and dragon or drakon can be traced back much further and could simply mean a big flying fire breathing snake with no legs at all, and it would still be called a dragon. The only other source I could find is D&D, which is very modern, and is only one intellectual property.
