Ancalagon is on entirely different level than those small drakes from Game of Thrones series. Ancalagon is easily a Titan size level, when it spread its wings apart... It covers the sun and sky in darkness. That's how truly massive Ancalagon is. It's like Ghidorah but on super steroids.

Remember, when Tolkien says that Morgoth let evil spirits enter into creatures, such as dragons, what he really means is Maia. Maybe not as powerful as Sauron or Gothmog, but in the case of Ancalacon the Black, very close to Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs. So, unlike Game of Thrones, Tolkien's dragons have divine beings in them. You are not talking about a large powerful magical beast, but a large powerful beast with an extremely powerful evil demigod. Balerion the Black Dread would soil himself when confronted by Ancalagon the Black.

    • @adrianhultman6236
      @adrianhultman6236 7 месяцев назад +6

Just a small note, it's not that clear that it's always Mayar he is talking about in these cases, I'd actually argue that it's only in some cases that can be reasonably inferred. Take the barrow wights for an example, which are created when the Witch King sent evil spirits to inhabit the corpses in the Barrow Downs. I'd say its hard to argue that those evil spirits are Mayar, both due to the power of the wights and because Nazgûl are not on the same powerlevel as Mayar and it would thus be weird if the Nazgûl could command them.
On another, I'm not sure if Tolkien actually describes Dragons as being inhabited by evil spirits, at least not in the Silmarillion. I know he does when it comes to werewolves for example (which is most probably Mayar in that case), but as I understood it Morgoth just infused dragons with a part of his magic. If I'm wrong I'd be very grateful if you could tell me where Tolkien wrote about it!

    • @vladimpaler3498
      @vladimpaler3498 7 месяцев назад +1

@@adrianhultman6236 However, it is not clear how it can be any other way. It clearly says in The Silmarillion that Morgoth cannot create living things of his own. There are several points where he imprisons 'unclean spirits' but does not say much more. Clearly Morgoth cannot create spirits, and anything he puts his power into would not be animated unless he put his mind to them. (See of Aule and the dwarves.)
The only other place he may be able to get them is from men or orcs, the latter his corruption of elves. This may be possible if he has the power to withhold those spirits from their normal process. (Going beyond the world or to Mandos .) Clearly the dragons are way too powerful for the spirits of men. Now, could they be the spirits of orcs given some of Morgoth's power to enhance them? Yes, but I feel it is a stretch. I think it clear that the Ainur come in a spectrum of power and some are just weenies but still useful. They might be so weak compared to Sauron, Balrogs, Ungoliant, etc., that they are only thought of as spirits.
Regardless, I still think Ancalagon the Black would eat Balerion for a snack.

Also, since most of the dragons died during the doom, Balerion literally had no other dragons to fear and there was plenty of food. So, little competiton, with a lot of natural food sources meant that he could not only grow bigger, but also be a lot more larger than any living dragon - possibly explains why the future dragons never reached the size. Size matters little in that case. Smaug himself being so durable his scales can only really be demaged by the black arrow. Which is not like bolts from got, there is a bit more complexity to it all.
Overall, smaug is about as big as balerion, but smaug outshines balerion in both the aspect of power, Intelligence, and durability.

Add to that they are spaced out, and Ankalagon outclasses anything in Game of Thrones, the Monsterverse, and Cloverfield. Estimate: 20 miles long at minimum, 35-40 miles at Maximum.

@@alphagamer9505 in truth no one really knows. According to legend The Cannibal was already on Dragonstone when The Targaryen's arrived in 114 BC with a newly hatched Balerion on the boat. Balerion died in 94 AC and yet The Cannibal is KNOWN to have been alive AFTER all the fighting in Dance of The Dragons was over, this is 40 years after Big B's death remember. That places The Cannibal AT LEAST around 248 years old! Now according to Maester's knowledge, a dragon will never stop growing if given the room and food to grow. If, IF now The Cannibal was indeed born around the same time as Balerion and was allowed to roam and eat as a wild dragon there is every chance he could very well be as big or even bigger than Balerion himself.

At least this video mentions that the estimate of 58ft by Karen Wynn Fonstand is not canonical. Every single time there is a discussion of Smaug someone says 'the books say hes 58/59ft.' No they dont. A book not even written by Tolkien, written 8 years after he died, says it. We know its flat out wrong and much too small anyway because she took this size estimate by comparing Bilbo to Smaug in a piece of artwork. In letter 27 Tolkien actually talks about this same piece of artwork and how Bilbo is 'enormously too large' in it which would make her estimate for Smaug enormously too small. It's not canonical and never has been. Not only is it not canonical because Tolkien didnt write it but even when he was alive talks about the artwork saying Bilbo is too big to the point that he says 'Enormously' so. So all we can say for certain is, we dont know exactly how big Smaug is but we do know it's a lot more that 58ft

Tolkien's dragons are such fundamentally different types of beings compared to Martin's dragons. Martins dragons, while having personalities, are more akin to giant flying, flame-breathing war-horses.. Tolkien's dragons, along with generally being larger, are most importantly, scheming, extremely intelligent war _generals_. They were independent-minded, clever and manipulative and could play the long game strategically. Glaurung, despite not being able to fly, was massive, like a giant, armored fire-breathing worm-shaped tank the size of a FedEx warehouse - and yet was probably most destructive due to his intelligence and the damage he wrought through mind games. And Tolkien's dragons were all essentially invulnerable to anything except the most exceptional of weapons used in very particular ways.

Let's hear it from the King himself, then:
"Then, seeing that his hosts were overthrown and his power dispersed, Morgoth (a God) quailed, and he dared not come forth himself. But he loosed upon his foes the last desperate assault that he had prepared, and out of the pits beneath Angband (a mountain, and also Morgoth's fortress) there issued forth the winged dragons, that had not before been seen; and so sudden and ruinous was the onset of that dreadful fleet that the hosts of the Valar (Gods) were driven back, for the coming of the dragons was heralded with with great thunder, and lightning, and a tempest of fire.
But Eärendil came, shining with white flame, and about Vingliot were there gathered all the Great Birds of the heavens and Thorondor was their captain, and there they did battle in the air for all of the day and through a dark night of doubt. Before the rising of the sun Eärendil slew Ancalagon the Black, the mightiest of the dragon-host, and cast him from the sky; and he fell upon the peaks of Thangorodrim (a mountain about three times the size of Everest), and it was broken in his ruin. Then the sun rose, and the host of the Valar prevailed, and well-nigh all the dragons were destroyed; and all of the pits of Morgoth were broken and unroofed, and the might of the Valar descended into the deeps of the earth. There Morgoth stood at last at bay, and yet unvaliant. He fled into the deepest of his mines and sued for peace and pardon; but his feet were hewn from under him, and he was hurled upon his face. Then he was bound with the chain Angainor which he had worn aforetime, and his iron crown they beat into a collar for his neck, and his head was bowed down upon his knees. And the two Silmarils which remained to Morgoth were taken from his crown, and they shone unsullied beneath the sky; and Eönwë (an archangel serving Manwë, one of the Aratar, which are the eight most powerful of the Valar) took them, and guarded them.
Thus an end was made of the power of Angband in the North, and the evil realm was brought to naught; and out of the deep prisons a multitude of slaves came forth beyond all hope into the light of day, and they looked upon a world that was changed. For so great was the fury of those adversaries that the northern regions of the western world were rent asunder, and the sea roared in through many chasms, and there was confusion and great tumult; and the rivers perished or found new paths, and the valleys were upheaved and the hills and mountains trod down; and Sirion was no more.
    Edited for spelling.

We don’t know if Balerion is considerable by Valyrian Freehold standards. He could be the norm. He could be big. He could be small. We just don’t know.
So the answer is probably, ASOIAF dragons are on the smaller scale of dragons, when compared to the LotR and other materials by Tolkein.

Plus Ancalagon was described to have had colossal wings, and can do devastating aerial attacks, and while the dragons of ASOIAF are dangerous only in their world, they cannot compare to most other fantasy dragons, most especially, Ancalagon, who is arguably bigger and is an actual dragon. Balerion, based on description, is a wyvern. Ancalagon is the size of a mountain! To defeat him, a group of eagles and the intervention of Eärendil and his flying ship, and the Valar were needed.
So, there's no contest. Tolkien's dragons would win, hands down

Smaug was bigger than any dragon in GoT, and he would not even made a snack for Ancalagon. Probably smaller than a single tooth. If Ancalagon existed in GoT, whomever rode it would need no armies, would rule the entire world by the strength of the dragon itself, with no hope of defeating it. Ancalagon would probably be stronger than their gods.

Ancologon is black, it was larger than the mountains, falling on the Peaks of Thangorodrim, it destroyed them, the first Dragons of Middle-earth were from the Maiar, they are literally deities, smart, treacherous, strong and live for millennia
And George Martin's Dragons are just animals with blood magic, they in no way compete with the Dragons of Middle-earth, let alone that Smaug is the weakest and smallest dragon like Balerion, the black horror

The thing is that asoiaf tries to be somewhat realistic (not in terms of existing creatures but in terms of warfare and human behavior) while while Tolkiens world is basicly an absurd fary tale and much higher fantasy. The creatures in it are way more powerfull but they fight way more powefull enemys so that it's kind of balanced. You can't make a mountain sized highly inteligent demon dragon fight normal humans, it would absolutly destroy everything in asoiaf without competition so it wouldn't work in it. But if you have a world filled with gods fighting each other it works so Tolkiens dragons have to be way bigger and more powerfull

Vhagar was nearly the size of balerions size during the conwuest menaing he grew for an extra 100 years(chagar is 400-500ft) balerions estimates are at 1000ft-700ft

you stated that Ancalagon was 3 different lengths, a mile, a kilometer, and then 1000+ft in the graphic…none of these 3 lengths are equal to each other 🤦🏻‍♂️

You're forgetting Balerion was the biggest in Targaryen history
But they were not even considered in the top 57 families of Valeria those families all had dragons wae bigger compared to Balerion
And the biggest George rr Martin spoke of was when the Valerian Prince decided to go back to Valeria with his army 400,000 long and dragons that could be considered as mountains
He personally mounted the biggest black drake in Valeria's history that Balerion looked like a hatchling compared to the size of that great beast
Plus we don't truly know if he failed in his conquest
I mean come to think of it what if the found a way to rebuild Valeria then in doing so the became hostile to intruders and probably developed weapons capable of fatally wounding fire worms that should explain how that little girl who stole Balerion returned with the Burning curse as her take away gift
But reguarding the dragons Ancalagon is still the biggest
I'm just saying that the dragon ridden by the prince would be definitely bigger than smoug

If Balerion could swallow a Mamoth whole, then Ancalagon could swallow a dragon whole

I thought the GoT dragons could technically live forever but eventually starve to death because they get so big that they require soo much food.

I like that r r martins crazy new fangled high octane dragons still pale in comparison to Tolkiens great legendary serpent beasts of old.
