- Doom Eternal is barely a month old and speedrunners have already figured out how to finish the game in under a half hour. So ride along with Marty Stratton (Executive Producer), Hugo Martin (Game Director), Jerry Keehan (Level Design Director) and Evan Eubanks (Lead Game Programmer) as they watch their latest game get absolutely destroyed by world record speedunner: Xamide.

I'd love to see devs watch one of these speed runs then immediately go and patch the game to make the run impossible. Then wash, rinse, repeat for each new speed running method until the game is literally impossible to speed run at all.

_ there are different kinds of speedruns, some you aren’t allowed to use glitches... if you want that watch the ultra nightmare 100% run... completes every aspect of the game (all weapon masteries, all runes/suit upgrades, collectibles etc) in, last record I’ve seen, around 3 1/2 hours

The devs here are right; the interesting part isn't necessarily seeing the completed run, but also seeing the number of attempts it took to perfect each manoeuvre. It always blows my mind when they perform the clips and other tricks, and I'd love to see how they figure them out too.

its the best thing a dev should think of imo. to an extent some people would like them too to bring some variety to speed runs.
I like this because it's not a glitch that just happens. YOU have to do it yourself to get it to work so if you want it gone, just don't use it. If the community wanted it fixed because they wanna focus on less glitch runs and it'll weed out the cheaters then they will patch it, if not they will leave it in and leave it to people's discretion to use. It's how game devs should think. It's not a game breaking glitch because again, you can just not do it so it doesn't need a fix or even warrant one. I like how they wanna get involved in the community and cater to All players! It's real nice to see them genuinely care. Unlike a bunch of devs I could list..

@@jerryhoward6500 yes they did, but speed runners are playing 1.01/1.1 since most of the things they did for speed runs got removed in 1.02/1.2... don't remember the exact patch names

Hats off to the Devs. Their enthusiasm, humorous nature, friendliness, respectful attitude and laughs are so...so nice and enjoyable . This is by far the most watched Dev-related video I've watched.

Imagine spending 500+ hours to perfect a speedrun and when you go for it, it turns out the devs shadow dropped an update with an unskippable 10h rickroll cutscene in the sky xd.
A cutscene that ignites a fire in your computer.
If I was trying to speedrun this but 1 out of 100 times rick roll is in the skybox...that'd be amazing and even as a speedrunner it'd be hilarious

The devs said it’d be impressive if he played the game normally, little did they know xamide is one of the top glitchless ultra nightmare runners as well. If you liked this you’d love his other runs even more, he puts his runs on RUclips as well

In the beginning, one of them really did seem kinda peeved. By the end it seemed like all the other dev’s enjoying themselves kind of rubbed off on him

If the devs did leave messages for speedrunners and made some sort of AI that can identify if someone is moving through a level quickly that would be fantastic. It would help embrace more speed runners and by tightening up glitchs for speedrunners to break it would be a great move by id.

WOW IGN is upping their content quality. Props for including an explanation by the speedrunner at 10:15 adds a lot to understanding the speedrun and gives another perspective on the devs opinions/views
These guys were great. You can tell they put a lot of love into the game, and are genuinely proud of it, and their team, and happy to see people enjoying it in whatever way they choose.
I love how they keep considering adding things to slow him down just to piss him off

That's why I love devs like this. They know people got their money's worth. They think this is fascinating. They see this and actually think hey can we make a behind the scenes video of speed runners of our game? They are not mad, upset, or truly disheartened. They want to have fun to, while simultaneously letting them have their fun.

Its a long standing belief of mine that the more physics exploits and repeatable player/world glitches exist in a game (within reason, as in it functions fine and perfecrly normal as long as you dont take the proper steps) the more fun the game is and the more replayability it has. Like halo trilogy jumps and boosts, so on

Unskippable cutscenes aren't necessarily all that bad, they give you a moment to catch your breath and have a drink or something. So long as they're not obscenely long.
Yeah, if they are short enough, doesn't bother me, but if they are super long and repeat viewings are needed on new playthroughs, thats a big no-no in my book

Well no, they said they do have a fix but they are unsure of if they should implement it. I think it is funny they mentioned adding a menu option to toggle patches. I just picture a menu item that says "Toggle scroll-wheel glitch" unironically.

@@Kebutor Well you gotta try very hard to make this even work. It's not like you are going to accidentally do these glitches in normal gameplay.
@@Mikri90 I disagree, in the three months I had played the 2016 Doom game on switch I found the clipping through walls when glory killing, while scroll wheeling it shows active particle effects still work, you glory kills in freeze tag on a ramp you fall through the map, and you are able to glory kill invisible pinkies if weakened. Just normal playing and only had the thought what if I pushed this button. Also in the multiplayer map with the toxic green ooze, use a teleport frag on it, you can teleport underneath it. Quite frankly you can shoot it since there is no collision. Oh a fun bug in Oblivion is take your basic heal spell when no enemies are around and cast it, when the ball of light is in the center of your hand hit select and wait an hour. You get full health.
@@Kebutor I have no reason to doubt your own experience, but frankly I never had any of those issues.
Granted, I haven't played a lot, just a single play-through, but it was flawless.
Could it be because it is a switch port? I mean as far as I can tell it seems to be a decent port, as reported by the reviews, but it's not natively built for it, so it might not be representative of the experience on the platforms it originally released on, i.e. PC, XBOX, PS4.
Also, although I stand by my remarks about Doom 2016, keep in mind that I was commenting here on Doom Eternal, not Doom 2016.

That mentality is so excellent, these devs are great. And they're right, the community is small enough that getting actual feedback is super feasible
I feel like it depends. Focusing on speedrunners is meh. Casual players aren't even going to find it if they did a great job. If they didn't then they can fix it to stop casual players from breaking the game accidentally. Speaking about patching glitches, this kind of reminds me of a developer called by Yandere Dev. His game is buggy but he focuses on speedrunners to the point where the glitch they do is impossible to find playing casually. It is odd that he focuses on that. I think he is still focusing on that glitch. Maybe not though because I got too tired of waiting for his game to come out.

These devs are pretty awesome seen plenty other groups have fun watching but they seem to just really enjoy it
Answering the devs about the "do speedrunners like when devs fix route defining, or route helping bugs and glitches" question: It depends on the bug/glitch and the game. Some games' speedruns are based around one glitch or one one kind of glitched system or a chain of glitches stemming from the same problem. When *these* glitches are taken out, and the game has versions that you can go back to, there's usually different categories that might get made after a moment of assessment stemming from "before verson x" and "after version x" aka with the x bug and without the x bug, while for other games there might be a moment of regrouping and stalling to make new routes and possibly finding new glitches and bugs (which doesn't always happen). Some runners might find the fix annoying, while others might see the fixing of the bug like a new challenge to find new ways to break the game and stuff, but again, it depends on the bugs and games. Runners especially find annoying when they get treated more like a beta tester then anything else (right nintendo?). This doesn't mean that they don't enjoy when the game gets fixed to be more stable and healthy (they love it actually).
Another small point: runners do THOUSANDS of tries. They definitely get both their fun and their money worth from the game. And this comes only from the attempts they do. You have to also count the times they might've played the actual game without running it.
They sound more like a group of friends that worked on a school project and they are trying to present to the class without goofing around
and thats the best kind :)

My brother accidentally stumbled on that glitch. Anything he used it on was utterly annihilated. Cyber-Mancubi, Barons, Doom Hunters and Cyberdemons were all reduced to chunks of meat and metal in under 2 seconds. We're talking BFG-levels of damage. Possibly more, since the projectile for the BFG is so slow.
My micro missile are stuck as precision bolts so tyrants on nightmare die instantly, has to be the highest dps weapon now
