  • Season 3 of Breaking Bad finds Walt and Jesse cooking for Gus, the Los Pollos Hermanos drug kingpin. Ratcheting up the tension and darkness brings pure insanity to the blue meth process and some of the greatest episodes of the entire series.

One amazing season 3 moment Id like to touch on is in the episode One Minute.
When the twins were buying vests, the gun dealer gives one of them a free bullet on the house. That bullet ends up falling out during the shoot out and its what Hanks uses to finish off the one twin.
    So poetic!!!!

I never understood the hate for Fly. I think it's a very fun episode. A nice moment of levity in an admittedly heavy season. Your thoughts on the metaphorical side of the episode is very interesting. Cool to find stuff in TV and movies that you don't see the first time through. Also, Fly in my opinion is one of the better bottle episodes found on TV today.

Great review but I wish you were not so harsh on Skylar. The first time I watched this show, I hated her and felt the same way. The second time I actually not just loved her character shes also one of the most tragic of walt's victims. Shes the perfect opponent for walt and is the only one who could legit challenge him. But also shes stuck between a rock and a hard place. If she goes to the police, shes screwed. She unknowingly has been spending the drug money and her brother in law is the top agent looking for her husband and didnt catch him. I put myself in her shoes and all the lies and manipulation she has been put through, shes another victim of walt's.
Mike is such a great character, I love his speech about taking half measures. We've all been there and made a decision that we later regret. Great performance and terrific show. Looking forward to your season 4 review 😁

Oh I have very complicated feelings on Skylar for that exact reason. Shes hard to nail down your feelings.

    • @kristinebautz1859
      @kristinebautz1859 4 года назад +3

@@CodyLeachYT agreed. She's a complex character. I think that's why people are mixed on her. I think once she sees and feels the money, shes hypnotized by it too. It's hard not to say no to financial security. Plus when Marie brings up walt being frozen with the possibility of death Nd not being able to think clearly, it gives Skylar a loop saying "ok. Maybe he was just trying to make sure his family was taken care of".
Assumingly, she knows walt better than anyone. She knows his ego and pride, but also his soft side and love for his family. She married Walter white, not heisenberg. Heisenberg came out and now shes trying in her own way to bring Walter back but its mot possible. And shes totally stuck. It's either destroy heisenberg and destroy the family or be apart of it and not break the family.

    Awesome intro, man! 😄
This is my least favorite season. There’s only so much of the Walt/Skyler divorce drama I can take before it feels like an actual divorce. And her going off, having an affair and then implementing herself in his crimes is all horrible. Sure, she had to find out eventually, but why should she become a criminal too? Anyway, the first half with the cousins hunting Hank, the Walt/Jesse conflict, and the parking lot Mexican standoff is great, but it feels uneven after that. After Hank is hospitalized, we get to see him mope around the hospital while Jesse is in therapy. The Fly episode isn’t the worst thing ever; I certainly respect the quiet introspective moments and metaphors there, too. Also, it’s funny at times, too. Then comes that unforgettable finale, and I totally agree it’s one of the best in the series, with those two episodes! Mike is awesome, and Gus is superb. Jesse is probably my favorite character by the end of the series, interestingly enough. So glad you mentioned the “groundhog” scene in Half Measures, because that scene always makes me laugh so hard! Not a bad season, but there’s definitely room for improvement.

I love the climax this season built too. I did feel though the early episodes are not as exciting as seasons 1 or 2 where there's all this danger for Walt and Jesse. In S3 at the start it's lots of Walt and Skyler bickering, Skyler going back to be an accountant again, which was about as exciting as its sound. Jesse is in isolation, Walt no longer is sure he even wants to cook anymore and he and Jesse have almost zero interaction for episodes 1-3.
What I did like about this season is how calm and reasonable Gus first seems, and how much more evil you start to see in him as things go on . He's such a great villain, I don't think they had a better one than him, including in the final season. You even see how brilliant he is at manipulating and flattering Walt when he needs too, it seems like Walt has met his match. It was also a good move to get Walt away from his School, so he can finally devote his time to making meth.

I agree that Jesse is the real source of most of the major problems. Especially how it ends. I know the writers want us to blame Walt but Jesse gets as much of that blame as anyone. Walt should have let him go several times. Which leads to the real reason as to the cause, Walt saw Jesse as the son Walt Jr. could never be. Someone to pass his legacy on to, share experiences with, etc. Walt loved him like a son, because love is the only reason a methodical, strategic mind would make such atrociously dumb decisions. Jesse vs awesome deal with Gus, Jesse vs saving Jane, etc. At any point Walt could have been rid of the Jesse problem without even trying but he didn't. And that's the only satisfactory explanation that I can think of.

I don't have time to write another long comment (I know, you're disappointed) but just had to say this season is phenomenal (I really don't have them sorted into my head as different seasons since I watched them all back to back but after watching your reviews & hearing you talk about particular episodes from the seasons, I'm starting to sort them out a bit more). And the main thing I wanted to say is I LOVE The Fly episode, def one of my favorites & I literally wrote a comment on another channel almost identical to what you said, the reason I love it is that it really portrays the different complicated dynamics of Walt and Jesse's relationship & how much they mean to each other. Also how Walt is really wrestling with his own conscience and guilt (while externalizing it of course). Because I'm watching it for the first time about 10 years after most people for the first time, I was surprised to learn what a controversial episode it was & how many people don't like it. I just thought it was brilliant. Well, I guess that turned out to be pretty long after all 🤷‍♀️🙃🥸

I had a different interpretation of "Fly". To me, the fly represents the guilt that Walt feels over Jane. It's this nagging thing that he must get rid of because it's a contamination as Walt puts it. When he says the perfect time to die was before he left to get diapers is because if he had, Jane's death, and all the events afterward wouldn't be his fault, or wouldn't happen at all. Once he gives that half ass apology, Jesse gets the fly, symbolizing the riddance of the guilt. Only for the final shot of the fly in the smoke detector light to tell us that the contamination is still looming over him.

Hey cody you have to remember what Jesse says about his aunt the fly episode represents the fact that Walter thinks he may be losing his mind due to his cancer that whole episode was made just for the last 2 mins when Walter sees the fly on the fire alarm he comes to the realization that due to his illness he might not be all the way there in the head and for walter that's what's scared him the most since his diagnosis.
So the entire fly episode is to show that this man really is I'll and he's fighting for his life and he may actually be going crazy due to this, and we are stuck right along with him and now we dont even know what is what anymore because we saw the fly to. Season 5: Walt cooks in houses being fumigating because of cockroach infestations. Roaches are among the filthiest insects out there, carrying all kinds of harmful microorganisms and residing in literal garbage, mold, and raw sewage.
Maybe I'm reading too deep into it, but that can be an analogy for how tainted Walt's soul had become since then. His lab partner goes from the flawed, but ultimately morally-upright Jesse to that sick POS, Todd. Murder goes from being only a last-resort thing to "necessary for business".

I don't like Ryan Johnson but In fairness I think he's a better director if he's kept on a shorter leash Vince Gillian did have a very tight pitching for this show when there wasn't much leeway for going off however you want

Hopefully Knifes out can help Rian Johnson’s career because I don’t want him to be remembered as one of the people who ruined Star Wars

Half Measures is my fav episode too. I enjoyed B-Bad t most when I could root for both Walt and Jesse. And I never rooted for Walt more than when he killed those two gang bangers in order to save Jesse's life.
Half measures also has Mike's all time best scene, his Danny Boy monolog, Marie's hand job scene, and t very last scene w Wendy befor she was killed. Unfortunately Half Measures is followed by Full Measures where Walt goes from hero to craven, self serving dipshit, who ruins both Gale's and Jesse's lives just to save his own worthless ass.

I’m on episode 8 it doesn’t pick up til episode 6 because of skylars bitching!!! And how Walt just gave up and we don’t see much of Jesse. In the first few episodes it’s like Jesse became the responsible one and Walt was wreck less. I can’t wait to finish once skylar excepts the fact that Walt risked his life to provide for his family before he did or cancer to secure the bag so they have no financial worries when he is dead & gone. I’d be greatful even if I was against drugs I’d at least try to understand. Sky is hot & cold and the first 3 season would be perfect if there was a little less bitching coming out her mounth and a little more support it would be better, obviously I don’t want Skylar to give her support right off the bat she has to bitch a little so when she does understand we are Finnally floored and relieved that she’s on his side, hopefully it happens I’m going to episode 8 today

And The Fly is absolutely fine. It is almost 100% Walt and Jesse dialog. How is it that everyone loves 4 Days Out w 100% W&Jd, yet hates The Fly?

Nobody likes Skyler I didn't either but if you step back and objectively look at how a wife would react to this situation, she knew he was lying but not what he was lying about. She immediately assumes he's cheating (which would've actually been better for their marriage) she's hurt distraught and becomes a little vengeful. Has anyone here been hurt emotionally from a relationship? Did you feel like making the other person suffer was the best feeling ever? I honestly think she went easy on him. Yes she was a bitch but it was understandable

@@CodyLeachYT yes, but at the beginning of your season 1 review you claimed that one could watch your individual season reviews without concern of spoilers for later seasons. and then you went on to spoil many other (minor, but still integral) parts of the later seasons. i think these season reviews are really good, but its really annoying when you spoil stuff.
