I have the XR.. awesome tool! My buddy has the M18 and it does feel like the Milwaukee has a little less vibration in the handle where as the DeWalt vibrates like crazy.. but overall, the XR is one helluva tool. I purchased my XR oscillating tool during a sale and got the complete kit with battery and charger for $99
Personally just bought the Atomic version because thats what was in stock at my local Depot🤷♂️ I used a co workers XR version and I didn't experience any differences. Just a weird move by Dewalt. BTW the Dremel 1.5 inch carbide blades are top notch
I agree with the research, the DeWalt nomenclature can be fairly misleading at times. I find that by looking at the model number, you can usually differentiate which item is a "step up". Ex: DCS355B(20V MAX XR) vs DCS354B(20V MAX ATOMIC) Since 355 is one number up from the 354 it would be considered "better", generally speaking. I've found this to be true across most of their tool lines. However, sometimes that step up isn't necessarily worth the price difference. Take the DWS779($350) and DWS780($500) for example. Same saw, same motor, same everything minus the kerf light. Would you be willing to spend $150 on an LED light that shines down over your blade?
I just bought one a few weeks back and remember wondering what the difference was. The atomic can run on certain lower amp batteries that the Xr cant. That's my understanding and explains the price variance.
The newest model is the 56 3 speed which I bought when they came out for 99 bucks! Both the 54 Atomic and the 56 are the the replacements for the 55. I think the atomic 54 is possibly the same as the 55 but with a black release lever, but whatever the 56 is definitely my favorite in the DeWalt brand. Love the three speed!
There’s a very good reason for this, the existing xr model is being phased out hence the price reduction ! It’s being replaced by an even more powerful model and will run alongside the less powerful atomic version
Hi Vince, I agree with you, doesn't make no sense with the dewalt atomic oscillating tool. Why make this. The other thing different was the clip that holds the blade on the atomic is black. I got mine recently. It's a 20v brushless atomic line. I got it for some jobs that come up in tile work, trimming wood frame facias, grout removal, trimming vinyl wall covering to make room for base etc, and I've been very, very happy with it. VCG any videos on porter cable drywall sanders? Specifically on cleaning comutaters when replacing brush's. Tired of burning threw brush's. An too scared to spray any cleaners on engine cus of fire...
Just purchased XR brushless in the UK with 2 batteries charger, case and 36 piece accessory kit for £199. That's about $250, but with the batteries ( and being in rip of Britain) that's not a bad deal.
Just bought the Atomic at H.D. Early Black Friday sale going on. On sale for 99 bucks. Includes battery and charger with 2 blades. In case anyone is interested.
I used a fien multi for years. The Dewalt is the best, it retired the fien. Dewalt multi has Superior control for precise cutting or full power for serious cuts. Light weight, hang it on your side when appropriate. Its the sawzall of the finish carpentry world. I wouldn't bother with the Atomic version. What's the point.
I’m an electrician and we use all dewalt tools and we have a few of the XR multi tools and I use them daily and love them!!! I love the variable speed trigger! Blade change is super easy!!!
I got the atomic($64) and after cutting a couple door jams (for flooring hight) a small spot on the top of handle got crazy hot. , Drains a battery super fast.
The I got the atomic because it came with a free 3ah battery. I also love it. It's a newer version, obviously Dewalt is doing something with the tool that you don't know...
The price of the Atomic used to be $99 when I got mine. But, it was a freebie with another DeWalt tool, so the actual out-the-door price was zero. I’m okay with that.
I did some price comparing before I purchased. Home Depot in my area, Boise, is $179. I found it on line at an Amazon affiliate for $117, the XR that is.
I just picked up the DEWALT 20V MAX XR DCS356D1 with the 3 speed variable based on many reviews, and yeah... happy I grabbed it. My first oscillating tool and I think I did ok! lol
I have a brushless Dewalt oscillating tool and it vibrated itself into not working. When placing a good working battery in it, the LED briefly comes on and then goes out. It might be the battery housing isn't perfect, it has loosened in the 3 years since I bought it, but wiggling this doesn't help. I am not sure I would run out and purchase a new one. It has only been used domestically for minor jobs.
I just want to talk about something it's Tuesday night 9 o clock just went food shopping and sometimes we don't look around and see people less fortunate I just spoke to a homeless guy his father passed away of cancer he was in hospice for a while and he had a great job working for contractor doing demolition and ended up losing his father the cancer he had to pay all the bills so he ended up homeless not because of drugs or drinking just a bad situation so I just got him a Gatorade that's all you wanted and I told him I do a lot of demo the next time I have a job coming up or stop by end see how it works out for the day they all give him a job just because somebody's homeless doesn't make you a bad person people do deserve a second chance sometimes people may shock you

Big tool stores always get the 'special' ones, so they can offer a seemingly comparable tool at a lower price. Great info here. Amazon has the XR package for much cheaper. I didn't even mind the rambling that so many are complaining about here. I was cracking up! Well done!
I got it over the Milwaukee because of the quick blade change and the trigger to do more precise cuts. The XR I prefer because of the 20000 oscillations
The only Atomic worth buying is the little drill/driver. Its an awesome general use, compact, capable drill. Obviously it's not for heavy duty use. Get the big 3spd hammer drill for serious work.
They slowed the oscillations so your bits would last longer and cut better on harder materials. Faster isn't always better. Too fast and it just knocks the teeth off the bits or creates too much friction and heats up the bits and damages them or just doesn't cut the material. Also it will have a longer life than the XR.
I know this video is now almost two years old, but check out your local Ace hardware. If you buy the 4AH battery plus charger base, you can get the oscillating tool or the compact circular saw or the one-hand recip saw free. I got this deal! The 4AH battery, charger base, plus the tool DSC354B ("Atomic" one) for about $165. Deal ends June 30, 2021. Check the Ace Hardware website sale details.
This atomic version is to replace the current DCS355b. The real successor and improved version one is the hard to get DCS356B at $139 tool only. Happy to report mine just came in today. Can’t wait the break her in.
got the original ,starting to see problems with the blade change. the lever is bottoming out on the body leaving little gap between the spikes and the plate. few co workers having same problem
I bought the atomic with a free 2ah battery for $99, sold the multi tool and bought the xr kit with the 1.5ah battery, bag and charger for $129. Now I have the xr multi tool, a 2ah and a 1.5ah, a bag and charger and only spent $129.
**READ FULL ITS GREAT ** From what I've seen looking around online the atomic lineup is tools that are neutered and the only thing smaller is their power rating. Another discrepancy is with different tool kits that swap better versions of drills/tools for cheaper ones or come with smaller batteries. I noticed online that they had two options for the 20v string trimmer, one available in store and one online only. The online one was cheaper and came with a 4ah battery instead of a 5ah battery. After some digging there are countless sets that are 4ah swaps. They are direct shipped from CHINA. The 4ah batteries are hugely lower quality cells inside. And the kits that come with 4ah batts are the neutered versions of the tools straight out of China. The atomic lineup seems like a "brand" to put on their Chinese crap to give it reason to be less powerful even if it isn't smaller. When I concluded all this I went straight to Home Depot and bought my string trimmer with full rpm band and a 5ah battery. DO NOT GET SCAMMED BY THEIR DECEPTION!
@@VCGConstruction This is the only thing atomic that doesn't have a non atomic version which I think is why. It's smaller than the 7" +6" models so it falls into "atomic". I only won't be getting one because I don't need it lol. Not a carpenter just general diy. I have a sawzall and chainsaw in 20v (haven't gone flex). My brother has a flexvolt circ saw that I can borrow when I get around to rebuilding my deck.
I believe I was thinking of the 4 1/2" atomic circular saw when you said that last night. I thought the little recip sawzall was 12v? *I looked it up* it is pretty sweet looking lol there's a 12v one too that I had seen before
VCG Construction yeah super handy on drywall . I tried DeWalts cut out tool . It’s handy for outlets . But my Stanley knife is quicker on straight cuts . But it’s pricey . I’ll wait on buying a set to get one .
Doesn't the atomic oscimallatir tool at HD come with a 2ah battery like the new fangled 4.5 inch grinderylookin saw does right now? (You get $45 back on that battery as well)
Looks like the Atomic has a “plastic” tooless blade change, compared to the XR’s metal? Also find it frustrating that the manufacturers (& DeWalt isn’t the only one that does this) can’t “fill out” the specifications for their tools; it’s not like they don’t know, or don’t have the answers, lol Thx for the Vid👍🏻
@@Wazoo117 No it's not. The silver one is die cast aluminum. The black one could be die cast aluminum too, but the silver one is definitely die cast aluminum.
@@timmoss868all the xrs I've used have a white/slightly translucent plastic lever painted silver. I have 4 of them for my crew. The paint is very strong but will eventually wear. With that said I have no complaints about the plastic lever. It's a very stout tool.
I really dislike the games all the tool companies play, people talk about brand loyalty, when in reality I'm loyal to none, just STUCK with a choice, you invest in a battery system, and hope the tools you need will do the job. I just joined team black and yellow at Christmas out of necessity, when after 10+ years on team Green. So far I don't see the superior quality being equal to the inflated price. Time will tell, I kinda miss being care free with my ryobi tools knowing I could replace them for half the cost or less. If I burn up another reciprocating saw, oh well $60-70 bucks, vs OUCH, $130-180... So far the dewalt 887 impact isn't that special. My ryobi did it for half the cost and my 4ah ryobi batteries also have lasted 10+ years, but let's see if they can change my mind, smaller yes, lighter slightly, worth double.... I doubt it. Thanks for the videos, but this could have been a 2 min vid. I watch any of your vids on 2x speed or skip, skip, skip..... SKIP! Until you get to the point. I appreciate your time, but you really waste so much of my time blabbing that my excitement declines by the second when you just keep talking and talking and talking, that being said I guess this comment is sort of an omage to the VCG'S, because I could have summed up my thoughts in two sentences... But why? When I can go on an on and on and on.... 😁🙄
My new Ryobi batteries (both bought at same time in set) only lasted 2 years and I didn't use the batteries a bunch. 10 years would make me like it better.
I bought the DEWALT multi-tool when they first hit the market at $200.00. And was well worth the purchase price! I would put it in my top 5 must have tools. $111 dollars is a steal for that model tool!
I haven't replaced my oscillating tool since it was stolen and have gone back to using my 12 volt Bosch oscillating tool which have the 1.5 amp hour battery. I did buy the fein 14.4 volt tool which was extensively used until the motor was stuck on one speed. I had the metabo 18 volt oscillating tool which I thought is great until I got cleaned up. Interesting how these dewalt oscillating tools work. I take it the atomic is the later model right?
The xr is definitely the way to go! In kit it comes with an adjustable depth stop. I have tried a few corded models that always stalled then I gave the xr a try because of the brushless motor, I will never buy anything else.
I've had one for about a year and used it and loved it every day until the trigger failed and doesn't work anymore. My only complaint is the back of the handle gets hot after some use and honestly I would rather have a on/off switch instead of the trigger but the trigger isnt all that bad.
I am on a Dewalt platform but I feel that I need to admit that tools in Dewalt’s Atomic line are garbage except for the circular saw which cuts better than Milwaukee’s M12 Fuel which has a bigger blade but could cut less deeper. The Atomic circular saw can also be used one handed.
I'm a carpenter by trade, I've got through x2 of these dewalt multitools & they don't last! IMO there's allot of bullshit hype over this tool. The trigger switch in both cases was the first component to fail. I think fein rules when it comes to multi tool build quality , but most of my batteries are dewalt & makita so will reluctantly stick with these brands
wow they are completely identical lol. just a little different paint job my assumption is its being put out to just saturate the market and make another choice be dewalt and fill up the shelf with dewalt.
More likely than not, the XR has been around long enough that it has already paid for its R&D so they can lower price. The Atomic MAY have differences but is new enough that price will be higher to cover R&D. Personally, I have the XR and love it. It'll be interesting to see what more comes out about the Atomic in the future.
Grabbed the 356B a few days ago for an upcoming deck project. Went with it mostly for the free 5AH battery promo at the blue store. The wording in the description is a bit odd too- it is variable speed, but the 3 speed selector at the base is more of a speed limiter.

I've a question Vince. I'm a roofer in vt and sometimes have to store my lows flex power tools. I had most of them charged when I put them in closet .Will tbi be bad for my battery
Used mine when I redid all wood floors and tile in my 3500 sq ft home. Worked flawlessly. You got a lemon
He conveniently always gets a lemon dewalt tool... weird how it only happens when he does reviews
Got this in a lightning deal yesterday on Amazon. DEWALT 20V MAX XR Multi-Tool Kit, Oscillating Tool, 6-Speed, Quick Blade Change for Multi-Tool Needs, Cordless (DCS356D1 for $120! Just came to see if it's good. Thank you sir!
Appreciate your efforts Vince.
But damn... you sure are a loudmouth character.
Far from a loudmouth. Vince is a beast and enthusiastic about what he does.
I have 2 of these and they are used and abused almost daily going on 2 years now and are still running strong. Awesome multi tool 👍
I don't know if it's the best, but I definitely don't regret purchasing it. (XR)
I bought the Bosch corded kit and it’s amazing, but don’t use it much because it is corded. What do you think performs better, the Bosch corded or the Dewalt XR cordless!
Thank You 👍🏻👍🏻

Just purchased XR brushless in the UK with 2 batteries charger, case and 36 piece accessory kit for £199. That's about $250, but with the batteries ( and being in rip of Britain) that's not a bad deal.

Just bought the Atomic at H.D. Early Black Friday sale going on. On sale for 99 bucks. Includes battery and charger with 2 blades. In case anyone is interested.
If you Goto Home Depot now they have the Atomic with the 5AH battery and charger for $129
I used a fien multi for years.
I literally used one of these yesterday..(first time)....GREAT TOOL!!!.. 👍
A coworker has one and loves it.
I've had mine for over a year works perfect
I’m an electrician and we use all dewalt tools and we have a few of the XR multi tools and I use them daily and love them!!! I love the variable speed trigger! Blade change is super easy!!!
I got the atomic($64) and after cutting a couple door jams (for flooring hight) a small spot on the top of handle got crazy hot. , Drains a battery super fast.
Probably radiation.
I just bought a brand new XR from the pawn shop for $80 with tax. Pretty stoked about it. This thing is a life saver in some situations
9 minutes for that? What a joke
Is it still variable speed?
I just picked up the DEWALT 20V MAX XR DCS356D1 with the 3 speed variable based on many reviews, and yeah... happy I grabbed it. My first oscillating tool and I think I did ok! lol
Just bought my xr today to fix my shower grout. Any tips?
I have a brushless Dewalt oscillating tool and it vibrated itself into not working. When placing a good working battery in it, the LED briefly comes on and then goes out. It might be the battery housing isn't perfect, it has loosened in the 3 years since I bought it, but wiggling this doesn't help. I am not sure I would run out and purchase a new one. It has only been used domestically for minor jobs.
I have the xr multi tool and when I put the blade in (dewalt) the shaft has play in it maybe I got a defective one

Well done!
Mines is dcs355 no letters 20k opm. What's the difference it's xr brushless
Keep up the great videos with demonstrations , reviews and deals! Have a great night everyone!🧰🔧⛏🔨⚒⚙️🛠
DeWalt is throwing some shade!
I use the xr multi tool everyday, I love it! Great video!!
They slowed the oscillations so your bits would last longer and cut better on harder materials. Faster isn't always better. Too fast and it just knocks the teeth off the bits or creates too much friction and heats up the bits and damages them or just doesn't cut the material. Also it will have a longer life than the XR.
That makes absolutely no sense.. Its got a varible speed trigger on all 3.. You can use them as you see fit..
thanks for the video. went with a corded version. tired of getting burned with batteries changing all the time.
Definitely best cordless, however the star lock Bosch is my favorite powered one
william wright Yes, thank you.
This atomic version is to replace the current DCS355b. The real successor and improved version one is the hard to get DCS356B at $139 tool only. Happy to report mine just came in today. Can’t wait the break her in.
Thanks for exposing the facts Vince! You always do a good & entertaining video! 👍
Thanks Michael!!
got the original ,starting to see problems with the blade change. the lever is bottoming out on the body leaving little gap between the spikes and the plate. few co workers having same problem
I bought the atomic with a free 2ah battery for $99, sold the multi tool and bought the xr kit with the 1.5ah battery, bag and charger for $129. Now I have the xr multi tool, a 2ah and a 1.5ah, a bag and charger and only spent $129.
Hey Vince, thanx for the heads up. Luv my XR. I’ll stick with it. 😃
**READ FULL ITS GREAT **
From what I've seen looking around online the atomic lineup is tools that are neutered and the only thing smaller is their power rating.
Is this a cut and paste from another reviewer or is this your genuine experience?
@@VCGConstruction 100% my own. Don't like spreading hearsay
John we appreciate your feedback, I will say the atomic recip saw does look pretty awesome though!! 🤣🤣
*I looked it up* it is pretty sweet looking lol there's a 12v one too that I had seen before
Is this better than the Rockwell oscillating tool ?
Never tried the Rockwell! Do you like it?
VCG Construction yeah super handy on drywall . I tried DeWalts cut out tool . It’s handy for outlets . But my Stanley knife is quicker on straight cuts . But it’s pricey . I’ll wait on buying a set to get one .
Doesn't the atomic oscimallatir tool at HD come with a 2ah battery like the new fangled 4.5 inch grinderylookin saw does right now? (You get $45 back on that battery as well)
Looks like the Atomic has a “plastic” tooless blade change, compared to the XR’s metal? Also find it frustrating that the manufacturers (& DeWalt isn’t the only one that does this) can’t “fill out” the specifications for their tools; it’s not like they don’t know, or don’t have the answers, lol
Thx for the Vid👍🏻
the lever is plastic on both of them
@@Wazoo117 No it's not. The silver one is die cast aluminum. The black one could be die cast aluminum too, but the silver one is definitely die cast aluminum.
@@Wazoo117 the xr is definitely die cast aluminum it has held up extremely well for more than three years of heavy use.
@@timmoss868all the xrs I've used have a white/slightly translucent plastic lever painted silver. I have 4 of them for my crew. The paint is very strong but will eventually wear. With that said I have no complaints about the plastic lever. It's a very stout tool.
Definitely not metal.
I just bought the atomic at Lowe’s for 119. It came with a free 5ah battery. Id say that’s an unbelievable deal.
Can you use the 18v xr batteries with this?
I owned the Makita variant(love for quietness) and used the Ryobi oscillating tool (hated it) and own the XR brushless dewalt (my favorite).
I bought mine from the Home Depot on Buselton Ave. just outside of N.E. Philly for $99.00
Dont care. Still love my makita. Blue all the way. Buuuutttt I do have alot of dewalt tools also. Shhhh
I've had one for about a year and used it and loved it every day until the trigger failed and doesn't work anymore. My only complaint is the back of the handle gets hot after some use and honestly I would rather have a on/off switch instead of the trigger but the trigger isnt all that bad.
Yes , I love this tool. I have loads of Makita and Milwaukee cordless 18 volt tools and still got this DeWalt tool.
The whole atomic line has me scratching my head?
I'm trying to figure this out myself. Its probably another name to try to make more money!
I bought atomic at Home Depot a few days ago and it was $99 with battery, 3 accessory blades (incl blade adapter), LED light, and 20K not 18K
Good point!
I have 3 and NEVER have I had a problem with either of them mine all work perfect and I use them for multiple jobs
I would buy the new 3 speed version
No need for the atomic name but the atomic is less oscillations per minute make no sense to even buy the atomic
They should have shortened the trigger making it two inches smaller. That would have worked as "Atomic".
