Unfortunately typical of the channel, I’m unsubbing it’s like a bad soap opera that doesn’t get to the ending... there is some great content but it’s just too hard to watch...
I have the XR.. awesome tool! My buddy has the M18 and it does feel like the Milwaukee has a little less vibration in the handle where as the DeWalt vibrates like crazy.. but overall, the XR is one helluva tool. I purchased my XR oscillating tool during a sale and got the complete kit with battery and charger for $99
Personally just bought the Atomic version because thats what was in stock at my local Depot🤷♂️ I used a co workers XR version and I didn't experience any differences. Just a weird move by Dewalt. BTW the Dremel 1.5 inch carbide blades are top notch
The newest model is the 56 3 speed which I bought when they came out for 99 bucks! Both the 54 Atomic and the 56 are the the replacements for the 55. I think the atomic 54 is possibly the same as the 55 but with a black release lever, but whatever the 56 is definitely my favorite in the DeWalt brand. Love the three speed!
I just bought one a few weeks back and remember wondering what the difference was. The atomic can run on certain lower amp batteries that the Xr cant. That's my understanding and explains the price variance.
There’s a very good reason for this, the existing xr model is being phased out hence the price reduction ! It’s being replaced by an even more powerful model and will run alongside the less powerful atomic version
I bought the XR 3 tool kit from lowes just now online, picking it up in the am when I get material for a job…. XR multi tool, Jigsaw, and Sander 4.0 battery Charger And large bag to carry
I agree with the research, the DeWalt nomenclature can be fairly misleading at times. I find that by looking at the model number, you can usually differentiate which item is a "step up". Ex: DCS355B(20V MAX XR) vs DCS354B(20V MAX ATOMIC) Since 355 is one number up from the 354 it would be considered "better", generally speaking. I've found this to be true across most of their tool lines. However, sometimes that step up isn't necessarily worth the price difference. Take the DWS779($350) and DWS780($500) for example. Same saw, same motor, same everything minus the kerf light. Would you be willing to spend $150 on an LED light that shines down over your blade?
Just bought the Atomic at H.D. Early Black Friday sale going on. On sale for 99 bucks. Includes battery and charger with 2 blades. In case anyone is interested.
Hi Vince, I agree with you, doesn't make no sense with the dewalt atomic oscillating tool. Why make this. The other thing different was the clip that holds the blade on the atomic is black. I don't know what dewalt was thinking. I went on line myself to check both model and i scratched my head. Now Lowe's is carrying the dewalt xr oscillating tool that has the 3 speeds on it which is a cool feature. I have to say i was asking for this feature. The odd thing is, home depot doesn't carry it. Thanks for the video.
@@Fausto27F I have both models and like them both. I do find myself picking the 3 speed more just to control cuts with finish work. I use the non 3 speed fir more outdoor cutting or when i don't need control of speed. Just remember you can control the speed with the trigger. Just nice to have that 3 speed
I bought the atomic at home depot because they had a deal that when you buy the tool you get a free battery. It was worth $129 to get a $149 battery for free.
I got the dewalt xr brushless oscillating tool last year for one job, and its so good, i havent put it down yet, i have cut timber with it with a wide blade, cut steel with it, cut nails out of framework with it when i have been altering my shed I have cut mortar out from between bricks with it when re pointing the house, cut board with it, cut plastic electrical conduit with it The only time i put it down for more than a day was when i bought the xr brushless reciprocating saw 😂 Its a go to tool, it sees as much work as my impact driver 😁 Im really into the dewalt xr 18 volt power tool range, im gonna buy more, i dont know whether to get the brushless jigsaw or a circular next I have a dewalt 240 volt jigsaw at the moment, so probably the circular 🤔
I got mine recently. It's a 20v brushless atomic line. I got it for some jobs that come up in tile work, trimming wood frame facias, grout removal, trimming vinyl wall covering to make room for base etc, and I've been very, very happy with it. I'm gonna guess they put a new name on it, without many changes because there are allot of people out there where money may not be an object, who sees a new name and instantly goes, oh it's a new version, I gotta go get it it's the latest one out there. And that = sales$$$ its all about the money. (Could be wrong tho) who knows? From seeing it out in the field, they both cut at about the same rate, and to me maybe the atomic was even a little smoother. I only paid 100 for it at home depot, tool, battery, charger, and a couple blades.
I noticed the same thing.. My take on it is DeWalt is possibly phasing out certain XR tools and rebranding them as the Atomic line.. They are making some changes to certain tools while other tools will remain virtually untouched. Hence the drop on price on the old model
I have had the xr for about three years and it has been a life saver many times and is the only took I use for undercutting on flooring jobs. There is no way I would purchase any other oscillating tool. They can keep the atomic.
DeWalt doing strange things lately with big box stores that xr is a beast I mean Fein invented the oscillating tool but DeWalt perfected it with the XR not to take away from the Fein even Milwaukee version not that bad either
So have the XR and the Atomic. They are both ab the same thing. After using both the only diff is less vibration. I mean it does have less OPM, but with speed cutting nails or wood, I haven't experienced a diff. If you have an XR, dont upgrade. If you need a multi-tool, get the atomic.
I agree, I have a corded Fien and this thing out performs it. WHO KNEW!?! I bought the DeWalt because I needed a cordless for a job and right away I was impressed in the first minute of use.
I just got the fUll XR kit with battery, charger, and bag today for Christmas from my awesome wife. I can’t wait to use it for real. There’s a lot of work waiting for it. The only thing I’m going to have to remember is to lock that trigger when changing blades. It seems really easy to forget and accidentally squeeze the forward rocker switch during a blade change, risking fingers. I know, I know, always remove the battery/unplug a tool when charging blades or bits. No lectures required, please.
I know this video is now almost two years old, but check out your local Ace hardware. If you buy the 4AH battery plus charger base, you can get the oscillating tool or the compact circular saw or the one-hand recip saw free. I got this deal! The 4AH battery, charger base, plus the tool DSC354B ("Atomic" one) for about $165. Deal ends June 30, 2021. Check the Ace Hardware website sale details.
Just purchased XR brushless in the UK with 2 batteries charger, case and 36 piece accessory kit for £199. That's about $250, but with the batteries ( and being in rip of Britain) that's not a bad deal.
I got it over the Milwaukee because of the quick blade change and the trigger to do more precise cuts. The XR I prefer because of the 20000 oscillations
Got this in a lightning deal yesterday on Amazon. DEWALT 20V MAX XR Multi-Tool Kit, Oscillating Tool, 6-Speed, Quick Blade Change for Multi-Tool Needs, Cordless (DCS356D1 for $120! Just came to see if it's good. Thank you sir!
The price of the Atomic used to be $99 when I got mine. But, it was a freebie with another DeWalt tool, so the actual out-the-door price was zero. I’m okay with that.
I’m an electrician and we use all dewalt tools and we have a few of the XR multi tools and I use them daily and love them!!! I love the variable speed trigger! Blade change is super easy!!!
By far my favorite and most used tool, but the Atomic version seems like another Dewalt solution looking for a problem. Also, they need to clean up their website and make their language more uniform.
GO XR All The Way!!! I just picked up the Dewalt DCS356C1 "Kit", DCS356 20v MAX XR, 1.5AH 20v MAX batt. and charger, 2 blades and a universal adapter. $99.00 . Atomic sounds like a "Special Shipment" kind of thing, I am pretty certain I learned at least partly from you to look out for these things. Amazing agility with this thing, 3 speeds and variable trigger, its been on my list a long time but DIY as opposed to Pro so i have to be patient. I was actually going to break the bubble on a 20v MAX XR Jigsaw and walked past the Oscillating Tool kilt for $99.00. Yep, they saw me coming ... and yes they had a blade kit next to it for another 25 ... lol.
I just picked up the DEWALT 20V MAX XR DCS356D1 with the 3 speed variable based on many reviews, and yeah... happy I grabbed it. My first oscillating tool and I think I did ok! lol
The I got the atomic because it came with a free 3ah battery. I also love it. It's a newer version, obviously Dewalt is doing something with the tool that you don't know...
I bought the atomic with a free 2ah battery for $99, sold the multi tool and bought the xr kit with the 1.5ah battery, bag and charger for $129. Now I have the xr multi tool, a 2ah and a 1.5ah, a bag and charger and only spent $129.
I did some price comparing before I purchased. Home Depot in my area, Boise, is $179. I found it on line at an Amazon affiliate for $117, the XR that is.
I got the atomic($64) and after cutting a couple door jams (for flooring hight) a small spot on the top of handle got crazy hot. , Drains a battery super fast.
im pissed off at why Dewalt decided to get rid of that belt clip on the newer Multi tools.... When i need to use this tool at spots where i would need to free up my hands but cant... Thats then is when i need a belt clip or hook to hook/clip it on my tool belt.. Although they never had a belt clip before... but i use one from my old Dewalt drill .... it made a different ... it really made a difference... My old one crapped out and i bought a new one.... Dsc355.... I was fucked off that clip screw hole is not a thing anymore... but... im going to drill a hole there and find a nut for the inside... because its different in there too..
The only Atomic worth buying is the little drill/driver. Its an awesome general use, compact, capable drill. Obviously it's not for heavy duty use. Get the big 3spd hammer drill for serious work.
I really dislike the games all the tool companies play, people talk about brand loyalty, when in reality I'm loyal to none, just STUCK with a choice, you invest in a battery system, and hope the tools you need will do the job. I just joined team black and yellow at Christmas out of necessity, when after 10+ years on team Green. So far I don't see the superior quality being equal to the inflated price. Time will tell, I kinda miss being care free with my ryobi tools knowing I could replace them for half the cost or less. If I burn up another reciprocating saw, oh well $60-70 bucks, vs OUCH, $130-180... So far the dewalt 887 impact isn't that special. My ryobi did it for half the cost and my 4ah ryobi batteries also have lasted 10+ years, but let's see if they can change my mind, smaller yes, lighter slightly, worth double.... I doubt it. Thanks for the videos, but this could have been a 2 min vid. I watch any of your vids on 2x speed or skip, skip, skip..... SKIP! Until you get to the point. I appreciate your time, but you really waste so much of my time blabbing that my excitement declines by the second when you just keep talking and talking and talking, that being said I guess this comment is sort of an omage to the VCG'S, because I could have summed up my thoughts in two sentences... But why? When I can go on an on and on and on.... 😁🙄
My new Ryobi batteries (both bought at same time in set) only lasted 2 years and I didn't use the batteries a bunch. 10 years would make me like it better.
Looks like the Atomic has a “plastic” tooless blade change, compared to the XR’s metal? Also find it frustrating that the manufacturers (& DeWalt isn’t the only one that does this) can’t “fill out” the specifications for their tools; it’s not like they don’t know, or don’t have the answers, lol Thx for the Vid👍🏻
@@Wazoo117 No it's not. The silver one is die cast aluminum. The black one could be die cast aluminum too, but the silver one is definitely die cast aluminum.
@@timmoss868all the xrs I've used have a white/slightly translucent plastic lever painted silver. I have 4 of them for my crew. The paint is very strong but will eventually wear. With that said I have no complaints about the plastic lever. It's a very stout tool.
Big tool stores always get the 'special' ones, so they can offer a seemingly comparable tool at a lower price. Great info here. Amazon has the XR package for much cheaper. I didn't even mind the rambling that so many are complaining about here. I was cracking up! Well done!
This atomic version is to replace the current DCS355b. The real successor and improved version one is the hard to get DCS356B at $139 tool only. Happy to report mine just came in today. Can’t wait the break her in.
I used a fien multi for years. The Dewalt is the best, it retired the fien. Dewalt multi has Superior control for precise cutting or full power for serious cuts. Light weight, hang it on your side when appropriate. Its the sawzall of the finish carpentry world. I wouldn't bother with the Atomic version. What's the point.
I have a brushless Dewalt oscillating tool and it vibrated itself into not working. When placing a good working battery in it, the LED briefly comes on and then goes out. It might be the battery housing isn't perfect, it has loosened in the 3 years since I bought it, but wiggling this doesn't help. I am not sure I would run out and purchase a new one. It has only been used domestically for minor jobs.
Talking about the 20k vs 18k OPM, the only thing that makes sense to me would be wider degree swing on the blade thus needed less OPM, and they don't disclose that....
They slowed the oscillations so your bits would last longer and cut better on harder materials. Faster isn't always better. Too fast and it just knocks the teeth off the bits or creates too much friction and heats up the bits and damages them or just doesn't cut the material. Also it will have a longer life than the XR.
got the original ,starting to see problems with the blade change. the lever is bottoming out on the body leaving little gap between the spikes and the plate. few co workers having same problem
Grabbed the 356B a few days ago for an upcoming deck project. Went with it mostly for the free 5AH battery promo at the blue store. The wording in the description is a bit odd too- it is variable speed, but the 3 speed selector at the base is more of a speed limiter.
Used one at work at After a year of use started to stall so bad and would never turn on, it would crap out and take 20 trigger clicks to run for five seconds
My X-RAY just now failed catastrophically the bearings just blew apart. Looked up available parts for it and they don’t sell them it’s part of the motor assembly that cost more to replace than a brand new tool 😵
They rise the price now at $139 for the XR, same price for the Atomic. ONLY if you look at it for the model numbers he mentioned. Now check for Model #DCS356B and thats the XR at $116.80
The Atomic name comes from when you buy it with a battery. Most Atomic tools come with a 1.5ah battery, much smaller than most XR batteries. Tool only may be the same size, but battery size makes the rest of the difference. Adding on 2 inches of battery versus adding on 1-1/4 inch of battery. Edit: Stupid grammar mistake
I think the DCS355 XR is actually the Atomic and phasing it in! The new XR DCS356 now has the 3 speed selector switch near the battery. A little bate and switch and some oscillating per min fudged numbers🤷🏻♂️ 👍🏻👍🏻
One of the only DeWalt tools I own . It's a great design . 👍👌👀 It came with a fantastic depth guide bar that even has a roller to glide it along 👍 really nice unit.
I am on a Dewalt platform but I feel that I need to admit that tools in Dewalt’s Atomic line are garbage except for the circular saw which cuts better than Milwaukee’s M12 Fuel which has a bigger blade but could cut less deeper. The Atomic circular saw can also be used one handed.
I bought the DEWALT multi-tool when they first hit the market at $200.00. And was well worth the purchase price! I would put it in my top 5 must have tools. $111 dollars is a steal for that model tool!
I've had one for about a year and used it and loved it every day until the trigger failed and doesn't work anymore. My only complaint is the back of the handle gets hot after some use and honestly I would rather have a on/off switch instead of the trigger but the trigger isnt all that bad.
wow they are completely identical lol. just a little different paint job my assumption is its being put out to just saturate the market and make another choice be dewalt and fill up the shelf with dewalt.

Probably radiation.
I owned the Makita variant(love for quietness) and used the Ryobi oscillating tool (hated it) and own the XR brushless dewalt (my favorite).
im pissed off at why Dewalt decided to get rid of that belt clip on the newer Multi tools....
Compare both in hand
The only Atomic worth buying is the little drill/driver. Its an awesome general use, compact, capable drill. Obviously it's not for heavy duty use. Get the big 3spd hammer drill for serious work.
In Romania the prices are at least double.
Purchased the XR with 1.5 battery, bag, and charger on Amazon for $99.
10 years would make me like it better.
the old tool is so good i want another just as a spare,,,,, its a superb bit of kit
Looks like the Atomic has a “plastic” tooless blade change, compared to the XR’s metal? Also find it frustrating that the manufacturers (& DeWalt isn’t the only one that does this) can’t “fill out” the specifications for their tools; it’s not like they don’t know, or don’t have the answers, lol
Thx for the Vid👍🏻
the lever is plastic on both of them
@@Wazoo117 No it's not. The silver one is die cast aluminum. The black one could be die cast aluminum too, but the silver one is definitely die cast aluminum.
@@Wazoo117 the xr is definitely die cast aluminum it has held up extremely well for more than three years of heavy use.
@@timmoss868all the xrs I've used have a white/slightly translucent plastic lever painted silver. I have 4 of them for my crew. The paint is very strong but will eventually wear. With that said I have no complaints about the plastic lever. It's a very stout tool.
Definitely not metal.
I bought mine before seeing this. I got the atomic with 2 blades 2 hour battery and a charger for 99.99 right before christmas and only on line
Hey Vince, thanx for the heads up. Luv my XR. I’ll stick with it. 😃
Having problems with the XR the quick change doesn't work for me it comes loose so I have to tighten with Allen key then it stays locked.
I have the XR. Love it!
I just bought the atomic at Lowe’s for 119. It came with a free 5ah battery. Id say that’s an unbelievable deal.
That makes absolutely no sense.. Its got a varible speed trigger on all 3.. You can use them as you see fit..
Just as I thought it’s a smaller motor thank god cause I just ordered the XR
got the original ,starting to see problems with the blade change. the lever is bottoming out on the body leaving little gap between the spikes and the plate. few co workers having same problem
I bought atomic at Home Depot a few days ago and it was $99 with battery, 3 accessory blades (incl blade adapter), LED light, and 20K not 18K
Grabbed the 356B a few days ago for an upcoming deck project. Went with it mostly for the free 5AH battery promo at the blue store. The wording in the description is a bit odd too- it is variable speed, but the 3 speed selector at the base is more of a speed limiter.
Yes , I love this tool. I have loads of Makita and Milwaukee cordless 18 volt tools and still got this DeWalt tool.
Used one at work at After a year of use started to stall so bad and would never turn on, it would crap out and take 20 trigger clicks to run for five seconds
I use the xr multi tool everyday, I love it! Great video!!
My X-RAY just now failed catastrophically the bearings just blew apart. Looked up available parts for it and they don’t sell them it’s part of the motor assembly that cost more to replace than a brand new tool 😵
I wonder if they lowered the number of OPM because it has more torque??
A little bate and switch and some oscillating per min fudged numbers🤷🏻♂️
👍🏻👍🏻
One of the only DeWalt tools I own .
It's a great design .
👍👌👀
It came with a fantastic depth guide bar that even has a roller to glide it along 👍 really nice unit.
The whole atomic line has me scratching my head?
I'm trying to figure this out myself. Its probably another name to try to make more money!
Well Vince the better deal is this..THE ATOMIC TOOL BATT AND CHARGER FOR 105.OUT THE DOOR FOR THIS FATHER'S DAY
I bought the DEWALT multi-tool when they first hit the market at $200.00.
I have the xr multi tool and when I put the blade in (dewalt) the shaft has play in it maybe I got a defective one
Because the xr 356 is out check out Lowe's.
Both good tools. The atomic vibrates a bit less I'd guess.
wow they are completely identical lol. just a little different paint job my assumption is its being put out to just saturate the market and make another choice be dewalt and fill up the shelf with dewalt.
Good point!
