  • Nicole gets more acclimated to the boating life on our 1975 Islander 36, Misty on Lake Superior. Misty gets new cushions, new running ringing and a new transmission seal while I learn from my mistakes.

We had an Islander 32. It was one fast boat. On a good beam reach, you would have to trim the sails to slow the boat down, because we would hit a point, around 8 knots, where the rudder simply could not steer the boat any longer. It's the only sailboat I ever owned that would routinely and easily exceed it's theoretical hull speed.

I tend to reef pretty early early so I haven’t ridden her hard. Don’t want to scare the wife!!

Got my Perkins oil leaks in the rear view mirror.
It didn’t happen with the trans on. Good luck.

So you installed a new engine?

    • @Minggat73

No. I had an old mechanic in Mexico tell me a trick. With the trans out, I knew where the leak was and I packed silicone into it. It was the oll pan gasket, next to the main seal. It was a huge leak. From there I just hunted down other leaks and killed them.
One was just a lose bolt.
Point is. Perkins get a bad rap unfairly. It’s people who aren’t careful when putting things back together.

Nice video! The cushions look amazing - did you use a sailrite kit, or how did you know how to make the cushion covers? How did you fix the transmission leak? What's next in the plans?

Thank you! I used a sailrite and worked all winter! There was some trial and error but once you get the hang of it, it’s not too bad. The transmission leak was a gasket on the back of the engine that needed to be replaced. She’s all fixed. It’s a brutal job because there’s no room to work. Sweden to the Mediterranean next!

Did I miss some videos? Following because I'm redoing mine and always looking for inspiration and things I don't know.

Nothing missing. My big projects have been to redo the cushions and fix the transmission leak on the Borg Warner velvet drive.

I wanted to see the engine fix and transmission leak

The engine fixed wound up just being to clean the air intake. It was very easy. The transmission leak was more painful, but it just required changing the gaskets
