I love that this seems natural from you. Not only are you nailing it, I can tell you’re enjoying being part of the instrument instead of focusing on every note. Dime’s proud.
Yeah it’s the same when you see Dime play it- and I don’t just mean because he wrote it. When he goes into that solo… he doesn’t play it. He becomes it. I know that sounds like cliche and esoteric but you can literally see and feel Dime, the man, sort of just disappear from existence for the duration… he’s not there on stage anymore- he becomes the music… and there is no longer the man; there’s no longer the song. It’s just a single stream of pure expression… this kind of almost spiritual or ethereal mating of the energies and Dime is just in another place. No idea where, but it’s somewhere we only get to visit for a few brief moments here and there through our lives in really profound times or experiences. I know it sounds crazy as hell and I sound like some whacked out new age hippie… but pull up the video of Dime playing it and I think you’ll see exactly what I’m saying here. There’s only a tiny sliver of artists in recent musical history that had this “gift”. Jimi Hendrix had it… when you watch him play Woodstock or whatever… it’s not a guy just playing the guitar. You can literally see it in his face… that’s how you can always pick it out with these people. You can see the absence there when they’re in some other plain where nothing else exists but them and what they’re playing. I think Stevie ray vaughn was maybe another one that had “it”… I guess it’s the ability to become so hyper focused on the feeling of the song and the act of expression of what almost seems to be some kind of spiritual or other worldly energy… They are able to go into this trance like state of zen where nothing else exists but them and their music in that moment, and that’s exactly as they would like it. There are performers, there are artists, and there are prodigies. And anyone that thinks they’re a prodigy… are certainly not.

Damnit dude. Just… damnit. You’re invited to my birthday party now. Btw- I know some people give proper respect to him but Rex’s contribution to this solo is so under appreciated. Actually his contribution to the band and how huge of a role his bass lines play in adding to how good many of these songs are. He’s one of the few bass players to me that are way above and beyond most all of the others as a whole. Sorry, bass players. They just don’t often stand out or contribute anything unique to the position. Then you have bass players like Rex, Justin Chancellor from Tool, Dave Elefson from Megadeth… Krist Novaselich, the guy from the highly underated band Ultraspank… (sorry forgot his name they haven’t been around for ages- but that band was so good, I can’t believe they never went anywhere- and they put on a hell of a live show too)…. And then maybe we can appreciate people from the past for what they were then like Fieldy from Korn was ground breaking in his style and unique sound back in 1994, 1996… And I’m not going to say Les Claypool because everyone always includes him… but personally, I never felt he is anyone particularly noteworthy, groundbreaking or influential… but that’s me. Point is, to even come up with that small list of bass players of similar quality to Rex took me a few minutes. But to my original point, the baseline keeping this together is so tight and interesting to listen to; even by itself it stands alone. For five minutes. FIVE MINUTES ALONE….. which btw was another song where Rex just blows it away underneath the solo. Plus he’s named after a dinosaur, so… I mean what would you expect? He’s gotta kick ass by default.
