  • Part 2 of the fusion projected I started in early 2021. Its not been going well so far and there have been plenty of setbacks.
    I used some Olive cuttings and 3D printed device that would hopefully help the trees fuse.
    The device was designed by Colin (@BostonBonsaiIdiot) and printed by Conrad (Empirical Innovation), so cheers to them for making this strange project a reality.

    I think it’s back to the drawing board…it’s nothing but failure in this side of the pond as well. My trees seem to have an adverse reaction to the whole concept and die as soon as I plant anything near the mold. Good times!
    Cheers buddy

      Yeah, they dont like living in a box lol.
      but I am also certain I can get this to work. It just is going to be a lot slower than the plan!

      @@KennetDeBondt hey Kennet. Yes the "video" has ben in process for a couple of years now but with so much failure with the project I've avoided making it. I'm waiting for even the slightest silver lining. Maybe next year.

    I don't know if I mentioned this in the last video (last year???)... Tree roots tend to send out hormones that inhibit rooting in the same plant. It depends on the variety, of course. However, the evolutionary advantage is that it naturally spaces trees out so that they have access to the resources they need (light, water, etc) and don't compete with themselves. I suspect that since you have a lot of root density in the pot, the cuttings will never take.

      yes i think the more the other trees grow, this will be an issue. altho i am certain the first few batches of cuttings where failing as they kept drying out.
      but hopefully i have enough in now to do what i am trying to do, but we will see

    I think it was a brilliant year for your olives. You found a way to successfully fill the gaps. Next year, just let the thing run like crazy. May just need to remove inner growth so that the trunks can make contact with each other. I foresee lots of watering and fertilizing in your future!!

      Cheers Sue, yeah much better this year. and the plan is to let it go crazy all next year. might need to slip it into something bigger tho. but we will see.

    So the box is to replace the wire or wireties usually used to constrict the trunks together? But you have to wait for the trunks to thicken to fill the hole. Well, it's good to try new ideaas . .

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  7 месяцев назад +1

      yes. the black box is basically just one mega sized zip tie. ... but there is also a plastic cone type thing inside too.
      you may have seen some people try and pin trees to like a bit of wood, or even foam, then use cable ties around the outside. so the trees can only go sideways really. this is the same. its just a fancy 3d printed version.
      although, have have just been easier to use the zip ties at this point lol
