Thank you all so much for watching my video!!! As I mentioned in both my video description and the video itself, I am fully aware of the risks associated with relaxers. I live in the United States, there are so many harmful chemicals and carcinogens in many of the products we use as well as the foods we consume EVERYDAY! Considering that I've only used ONE relaxer in the past 13 years, the amount of exposure is minimal. I am simply sharing my journey, this is not a tutorial. If you decide to relax your hair do YOUR OWN RESEARCH and make your OWN decision.

I actually think THIS generation of “relaxed” bw are going to have MUCH healthier hair, than we did in the 90’s, 2000’s. You got to consider, if you went natural and learned how to manage natural hair for over a decade or more, you have to have learned enough during that time about having a healthy hair regimen, to be able to do the same this time around for relaxed.

@@Godsgraceish that’s true about the bonds, but all hair breaks to some degree and that’s whether natural, or relaxed. It comes down to having the knowledge that relaxed hair needs different treatment to prosper than natural does, and thus making the proper adjustments to your regimen (since your bonds have been altered) that take this into consideration, in order to make sure you maintain healthy hair regardless.

You can definitely have healthy hair whether it's natural or relaxed. Some Black women have these rules when it comes to their hair that they aren't even enjoying their hair. Have fun with it. Color it, bleach it, texturize it, cut it, grow it, wear it big and curly, or full and straight, the options are endless. Take care of your hair (find a professional if it's in your budget) and have fun!

But either option is beautiful and is up to the person to make but just don’t spread misinformation because some ppl will hunk they can relax it and do nothing and not experience breakage when everyone’s hair is different, but yeah relaxers are great especially for people that struggle to manage their own hair.

to my lower back.I have relaxed my hair in a total of 3 times ,you don't need to do it regularly, just continue to mosturize your hair,I use hair milk ,honey, shear and cocoa butter, detangler, my hair has always been naturally bouncy and easily curls so even when I relaxed my hair that didn't change munch its just portrayed it self in a different light and it still continues to grow, it's all about how you care for your hair.

This is for anyone who is making the decision to texturize or relax their hair. This is simply advice from when l was relaxed and just a way to keep your hair healthy and prevent breakage.
    1. Deep condition every wash (many other comments here explain why. But long story short. Moisturize is good for your hair and regardless of whether your hair is chemically straight or naturally curly, the need for moisture remains the same )
    2. Protein treatments (I enjoy the brand Aphogee and when I was relaxed before it helped my hair to stay strong. If you don’t want to then you can find diy protein treatments like with mayo or just egg. I’d probably say use the treatment every 3-6 months or when you begin to notice breakage and thinning)
    3. Trim your ends. You can try to ignore this when you’re natural because split ends are less noticeable with the fro, but split ends are 100x more noticeable with straight hair and will make your hair styles come out less cute, not to mention the breakage will climb up your shaft causing your hair to be a bigger problem which is the opposite of your goals
    4. Don’t flat iron every single day. Heat damage is much more likely now that you are relaxed, you don’t need to give bone straight every time you go out. Make sure to wrap your hair and wear that damn scarf/bonnet. There are some cute hair styles that can last a good amount of time and look cute. Depending on the length of your hair you can try the cute legging curl hack for bouncy curls but rollers/flexi rods will work. Just use gel/mousse so your hair can hold the curl, sit under the dryer/or air dry/use hand dryer (low-medium heat not too close to the hair).
    5. Don’t use relaxers too frequently, you don’t need to use one every week, month or even every 2 months. Between 4-6 months is a great time period to use it. Once again, there are a thousand cute relaxed hairstyles you can use that will hold you down.
For the last time this is advice, which can be taken or ignored. This is for folks who would like to retain length and thickness.

You miss the point. If the hair is processed- it is not natural. What you're referring to is someone's REAL hair that grows out of their scalp. Real hair can still be processed and therefore isn't in its natural state.

@@user-dv3kq3rm4h okay, but then we are clear that dyed hair is also not natural? Cut hair is also not natural (prosessed in a different way), and the list goes on. As soon as you do something to your hair it’s not natural. Why do we do this to our selves as a community? I really don’t understand. Such a waist of time. Even that this topic exists. But to be honest think it’s an American thing 😔. Where I’m from we don’t even have this in our vocabulary only if we use the American terms

    • @user-dv3kq3rm4h
      @user-dv3kq3rm4h 9 месяцев назад +8

@@Alouster No cutting is not processing, it's literally a grooming process no different to cutting your nails or shaving your legs.
Processing refers to the molecular bonds of your hair being broken down by a corrosive chemical that does this- for example ammonium thioglycolate found in no-lye relaxers, sodium hydroxide in lye relaxers and peroxide used to bleach hair.- these are caustic harsh chemicals which alter the texture and thus process the hair which is someone's real hair but not their natural hair. These are all corrosive chemicals which break down the hair structure to make it straight and lay flat. That's not the same as adding a temporary rinse to your hair which washes out and doesn't alter the texture.
People can do what they want with their hair, but there's no arguing with science about how relaxers literally process the hair- which obviously means it's no longer natural, but yes, it is the hair that grows out your scalp and is still yours.

Still in my opinion, the whole debate over natural hair or not, and the underlying tone of the debate just don’t sit right with me. Let people live

    • @user-dv3kq3rm4h
      @user-dv3kq3rm4h 9 месяцев назад

@@Alouster I understand the source of confusion with the word process now. Yes, people can do what they want, but it's worth noting that relaxers are linked to uterine cancers and large fibroids in Black women and there is now a class action lawsuit against these relaxer companies. I think it's shocking that Black women have been sold this poison as a beauty product for all these years. Also the girls on the children's perms boxes didn't even have relaxed hair so they were selling us a lie!
I was relaxed for twenty years. I understand the convenience of going back to relaxers but the chemicals are harsh on the scalp and are causing illness in Black women and there needs to be a wider conversation about why Black women who know about this, are risking their health to have straight hair.

As a relaxed-natural- relaxed currently and girlie whose hair grows quickly because I try to do as little as possible to it;here's my advice to all natural to relaxed girlies: heat isn't a necessity unless it's how you prefer to wear it. Having some texture in your hair is important, I relax my hair at home and I've even bleached it and colored it and I've kept my hair. Very very little damage, but I do suggest getting your trims done professionally though. You can learn to safely relax at home and you can get help from a friend or family member. But if you're doing it alone at home. It's best to under-process your hair than to over process it. You can get a touch up in a few weeks, but if you overdo it, you'll lose some hair. I also take very good care of it and leave it alone. I wear lots of headscarves and satin lined caps to keep my hands out of it. I do try to go to a beauty school monthly to get a wash and flat iron though, it's nice to not always do your own hair and you can learn from the students and instructors about how to take care of it. Also invest your time into learning your hair. Just because it's relaxed doesn't mean you stop taking care of it. Also learn the best protective styles for your hair, even if you're like me and wear satin lined caps and accessorize yourself to still be the most beautiful version of you. Not everyone deserves to have access to you and your crown

I have my moments when I think about returning to relaxers when I’m frustrated with my natural hair but then I remember the horrific clumps of straight hair going down the drain as I rinsed out product… regardless I think we should keep our opinions to ourselves when it comes to what other people do with their hair/bodies/lives. I’m confident that a fully functional adult knows the potential risks and outcomes of their personal decisions. Let’s live and let others live. Just enjoy the video or move around, respectfully.

I hope this won't come off wrong. But here it goes.
I relaxed my hair 2 years ago after 6 years of being natural. Me being natural was partly influenced by my boarding school requirements deterring us from relaxers, partly due to the natural hair movement but mostly because of my hair texture 4b/a (confused still) in comparison to many of my peers. My natural hair was my identity back then, I had volume and length which many girls my age did not have.
Time skip to mid 2020 and I found it harder to manage my natural hair. For instance, taking hours on wash day or the process of detangling. 💀
I relaxed in early 2021 and my hair was healthy and still had volume, I loved it. I still relax to this day without any regrets whatsover, just lessons that I learn every now and then from my relaxed hair phases.
Later on, I do plan to chop it off and go natural or maybe have dreadlocks, or maybe keep relaxing.
Moral of the story is, if it brings you comfort and makes you happy, then do it. Are there going to be opinionated people? Well, yes.
Are there people who would discourage you from relaxing due to their experiences, yes. All I can say is, take your time in learning, keep doing your research, listen to your hair and most important, listen to yourself.
    Your hair is GORGEOUS 🌼♥️.
Ps: This channel has just popped up on my explore page. I hope you have a beautiful journey ahead ♥️

I enjoy being natural because I rediscovered what my hair looks like and I enjoy the versatility. My hair is so healthy and I really dont do much. Its actually low maintenance compared to being relaxed.

ABSOLUTELY STUNNING but I feel you could of gotten the same results when your natural virgin hair flat ironed or silk pressed either way relaxed not relaxed both you and your hair gorgeous!

I've been natural now for about 2 years. I'd never think of relaxing again. My hair is stronger now. When I need it straight, I just press it. But do what makes you happy. It's no one else's concern!
    Edit; Your hair looks great!

This was a great video to watch. You're vulnerability is refreshing, and you seem genuinely warm and sincere. I loved watching every bit of your relaxer experience. I hope you enjoy it and continue to feel good about it.

Tbh I was so much more motivated to take care of my hair once I relaxed it a few months ago. I love being able to detangle, wash, and deep condition all in less than 2 hours.

I’m sorry I screamed laughing when you cut to yourself in the shower saying “this is so crazy” cause I would’ve reacted the SAME way! 😂 I just relaxed my hair for the first time since 2007, 2 weeks ago at jc Penny… I was on the fence right afterward (grief) but I LOVE it now ❤

Thats what I been thinking. My momma relaxed my hair and my hair was terrible, dry and broke off but also my momma DIDNT KNOW HOW TO TAKE CARE OF HAIR! she wouldnt keep up with the relaxer for me and she'd comb through and rip my hair dry. I always thought relaxer was terrible till I realized it was my mom fault lol. I am very tempter to relax my hair now that I am an adult and can take care of my hair properly

Another option is perm your hair to get a different curl pattern. Either loser or tighter curls. It’s done on all texture hair. This salon in Brazil specialized on texted hair perm. The chemical are safer and must be done by a professional. It’s not an at home project because of all steps and details that’s needed but results are good and risk are minimal compare to relaxer

Good for you. Ive been getting a relaxer for some time. I learned to continue to take care of my hair while relaxed. So instead of getting my hair relaxed every 4-6 weeks. I go longer. I get my hair relaxed 4 times a year and it works for me and my hair has grown. Some ppl can do once or twice a year. When getting braids I get something that braided to the scalp so my hair won’t break off. Good luck on your new journey.

I never understand why ppl care what others do to their hair lol. Worst thing that happens is it gets damaged and you just have to cut it off and start over. Its just hair and we should never get so attached to something as miniscule as it is, it looks really good

Listen. I had to go back to relaxers. After moving across the country and my hair going to shambles because the water change and lack of a stylist I messed it up and then it was breaking like crazy because its so sensitive in the natural state. I do not plan on relaxing as often as I did when I was younger but I am definitely putting it back in the game!

I LOVE IT!!! Your hair is fried, dyed and laid all the way to the side! You are to funny to me. I enjoyed your video. I enjoy all the supportive comments below and the truth about being natural and not always enjoying your nature hair because its so time consuming and always in a protected style. My hair is short and I love short wash and go hair but the shrinks so much and I'm always having to use heat to stretch out my curls. I may look into getting a relaxer.

Why perm/relax the hair just to flat iron it and put it in a state that could have been already achieved in its natural state ?

As soon as I would walk outside it would poof up, my straight hair never lasted everrr I live in Houston it’s hot and humid. Now I can walk out in the rain and it’s still straight, does not frizz. There’s tons of reasons but I’m happy with my decision.
