In the third installment of our video tutorial series highlighting the exciting updates to Native Instruments' comprehensive producer bundles, Komplete 8 and Komplete 8 Ultimate; Dubspot instructor and NI's product specialist Matt Cellitti explains and demonstrates why Studio Drummer from Native Instruments truly makes Komplete more "kompleterer".
Komplete has always had good options for sequencing acoustic drum parts, but this is the first acoustic drum instrument from NI that allows the user total control over every necessary aspect that a musician will need when making realistic, acoustic drum tracks. You are able to pick from over 3,500 drum grooves, simply dragging and dropping these grooves into your DAW arrangement as needed.

Get it right ! It's 'completererer'.
Everybody knows that ... 😜
10 years on and still a valid and helpful Tutorial.
Thanks 👍
You've managed to make me very excited about a drum instrument I've been sitting on for months and months now. God bless yeh.
wow yeah one of the best sounding drum plugins. Never seem to sound mechanical and just beautifully place in rooms.
Just got this for christmas. Absolutely speechless. 10000/10
This was great I couldn't figure out how to import grooves into my DAW until I watched this NI made the crosshairs so small I hardly noticed them. The mixer and effects tutorial is just an added bonus. Thanks so much!
Just started using this, super impressed. I'm playing it with e-drums in the room, gets a great sound, very tweakable.
Better than superior drummer?
Very nice, short, and clear tutorial. Been using Studio Drummer for a couple of weeks now… its now my favorite drum software. Sounds great and as you displayed, the control over every sound parameter is top notch.
Glad you enjoyed this tutorial. Thanks for watching!
This is such a great overview - thanks a lot. I got this with Komplete 8 and I'm so looking forward to having a go with it now.
Wonderful way of explainning! Just loved the product and the channel

I'm just blown away, i've been a Toontrack ( EZdrummer, Superior Drummer ) guy for years, and then i found this, i think the Toontrack products is far below this :)
I had EZDrummer, now i'm on Addictive Drums and downloading Studio Drummer. I think this is gonna be a lot of fun with this VST :D
Addictive Drums for the Win!!
DAYUM!!! transient is nice.
I can't wait till I can afford this!
You can do it either way. Make sure to install the programs to the Mac hard drive...the samples can go on an external to save space
If I can link this to my e kit, and play my own grooves..man o man o man!!
Got my Komplete 8 update and I gotta say I'm pretty impressed with this after fucking with it for 3 days....I'm awestruck that I can now lay out as many DIFFERENT midi grooves as I want on ONE track!!! All due respect to my Stylus RMX, but this is like night-and-day faster!!!!
I love Studio Drummer. It's the first drum VSTi I've used and I haven't been bothered to try anything else; SD is easy to use, intuitive, and you can map out the drums for a whole song in minutes. Along with a great modeled EQ, comp and other processing PLUS a wicked mixer section, for the price this is a fucking steal.
Thank you for the input!!
Rather unnecessary use of the word "fucking", but hey ho.
yes. the changes between the samples are subtle, of course, but they are there. they don´t lie in this vid about Studio Drummer sounding natural.
I do hip hop but man that looks cool!!!
thanks man! great tutorial, very useful! anyway, did u buy the Alicia Keys plugins separately? how much was it?
GREETINGS....... THANKS SIR. However, my heart would not rest....unless you said I'm able to Eq every one of the kit individually. Thanks.
i am used to use EZD2 and EZX from Toontrack but now, i think here, it sounds better
yes
These are MIDI grooves, so you cannot just change the time signature of a prerecorded 4/4 pattern for instance. However, some of the grooves are recorded in at 3/4 or 6/8 actually and you can find these by searching through all of the different grooves.
Would love to see a tut on studio drummer with maschine. Guitar rig on a separate group making multiple takes with different amps and effects.
@xlxfinaldeathwishxlx Yes. It is pretty complex at first, but when you get the hang of it, it's really easy. I began recording a couple years ago and after about 2 months of recording, everything became pretty second nature. There's tons of tutorials online. The first thing you want to do though is to figure out what software you want to use. "Protools" is a pretty standard, but I personally use Cubase 6. Anyone in the pro audio section of guitar center can help you find everything you need.
hey great video! how can i create drum sequence in logic x?
Hi nice tutorial .. how to get a cymbals in a mixer instead of a tambourine and a woodblock ?
Sounds great! I purchased it but I can't get it to trigger from Logic 9 (DAW) using Roland HD1! Help please!!!
oh and lovely tutorial btw thank you very much...can you do one on george dukes soul treasures
Hi! I just got Kontakt5 and wanted to buy some libraries extra! Is this better than the Abbey road kits? or drum lab for example?
I want the most realistic drum libraries there is, because im also a drummer (using my roland TD12)
so can you recommend studio drummer?
thx for the reply already👍
No doubt I love almost everything from NI, but when it comes to pianos and acoustic drums, I'll have to go with XLN Audio.
@5:05 "Loose with the Tightness" XD
@mcsg27 I don't think i can adjust that on the DM6? But it is also more sensitive than any other plug in or Alesis's software.
I have these. I really like them, but I was disappointed there were no brushes included. Thoughts or reasons for that?
Hi, I can't seem to find the answer to how to actually use this! If I record each drum seperately on different tracks will it have to load a seperate studio drummer for every track and take up lots of cpu? If I do put the studio drummer on different tracks will I only be able to mix a one drum on each track, I mean if the Bass drum is on track 1 and the snare on track 2 and the hi hat on track 3 can I mix all three in a row on the studio drummer mixer or do I need to mix one drum at a time?
im thinkin on gettin into maschine by feb next year too, i wonder if komplete8 is included ?
I just got studio drummer, and am using windows 7 with studio one pro. Can u share how to do the install? Im a novice with the vst plug ins. This product looks a little complicated so Im really stuck, would greatly appreciate ur help....
Will this stay in tempo with my keyboard as I play and is there a way to do fills and
does it change so it doesn't sound like a loop recording Or is it not that smart.
OH so thats how you get your sounds from kontakt 5 to your host project?
or daw and its by dragging it
is there another way to do it besides the way you did @ 4:05?
and what are u using to create ur sounds, an electric drum set? midi control, beat machine etc?
oh no, olvide darle "me gusta" al video que mire antes que este...
i want it and i've got to have it , i downloaded it from the website did everything and everything seemed to work fine until open it and there was no sound coming out . what could be the problem please ? gotta try b4 i buy
Also,,,at 7mins 30secs you got to the mix section in the kick and snare channel. The mix section has the mic selection sliders....how come these are disabled in all other channels except kick and snare?
Thanks.
where are you dragging the grooves to? like do you have to have a separate recording software or does it come with the program?
can you make your own grooves? or do you have to use the pre recorded ones?
Hi Dubspot,,,, can you teach me how to choke a cymbal?
Thx!
... but, we can keep a midi track with the midi regions, sent to an audio track without recording it. Record all the other tracks and tweak the drums until we're finished mixing, record the drums on the audio track when we're satisfied everything is in place and e.q.'d. I'm starting to REALLY like Studio Drummer better than all my other drum software!
so if i get a drum beat i like can i save than and bring my guitar in record my lead and rhythm parts over and also bring in my vocals...save it all where i can burn to cds to sell to people? just wondering i know i need to buy the guitar input thing but idk how to do anything and im very confused sense im just getting into recording gear
i can load the mixer on more than one group right?? like one for my drums and then for the rest of the tracks?? or is it limited to the drums? sorry if thats a dumb question lol
The reason we like to e.q. different drums seperately is because the other tracks require that we tweak the e.q.s when we're mixing. Once we lay all the drums on an audio track, we can no longer do that.
can you tell me how do I record the groove to my composition in logic?
wheres the crash cymbals and ride on the mixer. theres only tamb and wb, how can i mix the crash and ride? if theres not show up
Toontrack says hi!
Is it possible to export the final recorded drum play to audacity? If so, how?
@dmoates420 I own SD2.0 and there's something wrong with their ears in Toontrack, because the kick drum in avatar sounds very brittle and flammy without any processing. I totally love the first Superior though.
Yes, SD2.0 is more flexible, but the source samples are really overprocessed, and you need to fix it, which is not the way you work with actual live drum session
Studio Drummer as well as the Abbey Road Drums sounds way more natural to me.
Just my opinion, feel free to ignore it.
If I could design a drum program, I would invent a "randomizer". I would have not only multiple drum samples @ different velocities, but I would have multiple drum samples at the SAME velocity. Then each time you trigger a drum sound, the program's "randomizer" would ensure that the same sample is never played twice in a row. So If it has 5-10 snare samples, for example @ 50% velocity, When you hit it the 1st time @ 50% it might play sample #1, then on the 2nd hit, sample #3 or #5, #9, etc.
@MrVizionary2012 i cant seem to figuire that out either. the software works, but how the hell do i get drum tracks to, mixcraft, my DAW?
hi question i have install Kontakt 5 8 and 9 but only shows in VST Cubase contakt 5 not even shows tow icons for complete 8 or 9 any ideas thanks appreciate
how can i make studio drummer sync up with my recorded songs? is there a way for it to just sync up?
can you play this kit using the keys on your midi keyboard ??? Im new to all this
Hi, I am trying to use Studio Drummer with FL Studio, and I can drag and drop the groove track into FL Studio, but I can't hear it when I try to play it back. Any help?
um how do you say for example record the grooves they have to use them in your tracks?
If i connetec my Roland TD-8 up to my Macbook using Logic Pro X. Would I be able to use studio drummer through that and record it using midi to USB cable? Is that how it works? I'm new to all this. Thanks
Yes for sure +John Anthony Bullock
I have studio drummer and I'm struggling with the sensitivity of the snare, it just wants to go really loud, with very little input from the e-drum pad. Any suggestions? I still want the range, but the velocity curves don't work for me.
PLEASE HOW DO YOU TUNE THE INDIVIDUAL DRUM KITS....EXAMPLE, SNARE, TOM, KICK.
Such a dumn thing, but I can't actually figure out how to get the hand claps on the right side - they don't seem to be applied to any midi key, and clicking on it appears to load it on the bottom, but can't actually get that sound going - anybody know what's up?
@RizzoAstronama Don't have zzounds in England I'm afraid. I'll be getting direct from NI but thanks anyway!
You are absolutely right. That disappointed me too.. Anyone's got a clue on how to have brush "sticking" out of it?
Hello I need the komplete Native Instruments bundle. How do I get it??
Is this good for acoustic songs?
what DAWs is this compatible with? I use FL Studio & Protools
how do you change the time signature?
can i put them in ableton's drum rack? do you know?
For the record to NI if you could just drag the grooves from the groove browser it would be much more intuitive. Great product though! Also you can disregard the support ticket i sent you since iIwatched this LOL.
You really have to try Superior Drummer 2.0...
How to pan different cymbals to different channels?
PLEASE, you said you don't need to route these to individual tracks in their host (Ableton)...but you didn't who us how if we wanted to!!! I'm going CRAZY here man!!
1) Have loaded studio Drummer in Kontakt. Got the midi drum pattern paying.
2) Can see in the output section the master output and 4 x Aux
3) HELP ME!!
Thanks!!
can i wire this through cubase???
but can i program my own drum beats if i dont want to use loops?
Hey, Can you use this software just as a vst? Without non of that complete 8, kontakt player shit?
