Alpha Gaming So I’ve been trying to do the 30 day stream challenge on twitch. My setup his right(aside from a few adjustments need to make), I have a good overlay, I welcome viewers; however it seems that just after a few minutes they leave the chat and never talk. Is there any tips that you have to sustain an audience once they enter the stream?

“The more I share (help) the more I grow” - the real secret to success. Similar situation here on the fear. I didn’t want to lost my ability to keep living as an expat.
I’m there with you also on being mindful of the advice I give because not everyone has the mindset/drive to follow through. That hit me hard the first time I went to a conference and got to meet a lot of people that watch my videos. It really brought my attention front and center to the fact that all of these numbers we keep track of are human beings and we need to make sure we’re being responsible with their attention.
    Excellent video!

Fear is a great motivator, but it can also hold people back. Failing is needed for success. Everyone fails, and those that don't are losers, because it means they never tried anything. I had a different kind of fear... fear of mortality, which propelled me to start RUclips in October 2018. Here I am, almost a year later and have grown a RUclips Channel from 0 subs to over 43,000. I had a lot of failure to launch in that time, but failing and figuring out what works and what doesn't is part of the journey.
I have now started Stream on Twitch last month, and all I do is fail. I look at my VODs and I am failing at it. I absolutely love that. Learning Twitch has been a great adventure and I appreciate all the videos you have shared.
I am now a full-time content creator on the opposite spectrum as you, I make RUclips videos and only stream twice a week on Twitch. All my revenue comes from RUclips where Twitch doesn't even pay for the internet bill. Time will tell if I succeed at Twitch, but I don't think I have failed enough yet. Just my 2 cents, Thanks for the video!

Fear is why I haven't cancelled a stream due to sickness/tiredness/feeling mentally down in over a year. I don't want to go back to my old job and I am willing to work (and sometimes suffer) for this. I have nothing that I want to fall back on, and Sydney cost of living is atrocious. Lots of fear :)

Great video. Super raw and I can tell it comes from the bottom of your heart. I think for me, it isn't the sense of failure that I fear. I fear of letting the people down that have been supporting me since I decided to re-start RUclips for the 5th time, and this time I'm taking it seriously. I've done RUclips on and off for the past 6 years, and even had my first channel at 500+ subs in under 6 months, I'm just hoping I don't do something dumb again this time lol

The fear that soon I will have children and then I won’t have the same amount of time as I do now. It has propelled me forward to try. To try in social media and do what I have wanted for years but was afraid of failure and making a fool of myself.

Thank you Harris. You are always so open about your thoughts and ideas for this industry. And i think that it helps a lot of us. I believe that i am a little like you in the fact that i use fear as a motivator, but in a different way. I am a physically disabled person who at times has wondered what my place in this world is, and what the point of any of it is. I watched my perfectly abled friends and family waste their lives because they did not understand the struggles of day to day life for some one like me. Because of that i used the fears of being nothing but a burden on society and my friends and family to chase my dreams. Firstly to work in the film industry ( which i managed to work on more than 25 major films) and now to begin my career on RUclips and twitch. As you said, i use the fear to motivate me to work harder and yes sleep less. Thank you for all the advise that you give us.

As a person who is just starting to grow a community I completely understand about giving advice and then being afraid that the advice you have provided may lead to hurting someone who follows that advice, and that fear is what tends to hold me back in the way I talk to people within my community and to people just passing by me on the road. I also have to agree that fear can drive you if I was not afraid ending up doing nothing with my life and leaving the world without a single scratch on it, I would have never in my wildest dreams become a college student or have my supportive and friendly twitch community.

This video hits close to home. To keep it short, i'm a child abuse survivor who is still living at home and I have made the choice to study arts and photography and recently started streaming. I have made it hard for me to find a normal 9-5 job because I didn't think I would make it to 20. I hit 20 years old a few months ago, and I want to make this work, and all the choices I have made leave me no choice to make this work. It scares me a lot, but if I can get through this rough patch and be successful, I will be sure to thank you for all your videos and tips.

Fear of never growing. I'll have 1 or 2 guys on stream chatting for at most an hour. Haven't made videos in over a year. Trying to find what I'm good at, and lately I've been going through the motions and started off well, but I need to crank it up to 110% with a fire under my pants to succeed or not. The time it takes kills me. It's a waiting game and it's scary, I really think and believe I can do this, and I can turn that "could" into "I Will". Love the video, gonna be more active in the Discord and I'll hammer away until I reach my goal.

  • @ThatZeeGuy
    @ThatZeeGuy 5 лет назад +1

    Amen.
The fear is real and what most people dare not talk about, especially those that are successful. Fear can be many things and it does change over time. The fear of loosing a loved one, the fear of not having another viral video, the fear of fear itself.
I am honestly in 1 of the most scary moments of my life and even though the things i'm trying don't work, its the fear that keeps me going. Fear of failing. Fear of loosing everything I have spent my 18 working years of my life to achieve.
I quit my job December last year as it was a toxic environment and I was becoming a negative person because of it. I have, not through lack of trying, not been able to procure employment since. I spend a good 5 to 6 hours a day looking for work and applying for jobs, even on weekends, I don't stop. I also am trying to focus myself and improve my own content, even though most days I do not feel like continuing but I know the ROI is extremely long term in this industry and I need to keep at it.
If being where I am right now has taught me anything, having to sell off my belongings to survive, is that its just stuff. Stuff isn't important. It can help but sure but that "stuff" doesn't make you a better person. You make you a better person.
Thanks for the video Harris. Hit right in the feels!!!

Wow. That really hits home with me. May 5th I quit my job. I've done factory work for over 15 years. But, I couldn't do it anymore. It really hurts to say this, but, I'm not as young as I used to be. The mind is young, the body... Not so much. Lol. I was paid very well. But, your sanity isn't worth a paycheck. I had no idea what I was going to do. I play a lot of video games in my downtime. I found your videos, and dude, you're an inspiration. I've taken pages and pages of notes from your videos. Since then I've bought a laptop, mic, capture card, and camera. I was tired today. I should be working on a video right now for Monday, and I'm going to. When I'm done here. I'm not looking to be the next pewdepie or ninja or AVGN. I just want to make a comfortable living playing video games. Lol. I know, everyone's dream, right. But, I feel I should say thank you. You've inspired me.

  • @Ellelaith

This spoke to me. Fear of failure or fear of regret keeps me going with my streams. Fear of what if I didn’t give this a try as a side hustle for now while I work my full time day job. Wouldn’t i regret it? That’s what keeps me going or staying up all night to make sure my streams are fun or interactive and overlays stay simple, etc. bc all that pays off. I am glad I stuck with it even after I thought it wouldn’t pay off 2 months in but I’m so glad that fear of what might happen if I stopped and think of what a year would bring and not being to see that bc I want it kind of thing. I have also become very transparent last weekend when having the worst day ever with my illness of Hashimoto’s disease. Wow the love and support that my Twitch friends gave me shined thru so hard that day and a ton came to support me stream even when I didn’t feel up to it health wise. So fear of people knowing I’m not perfect or fear of people leaving too if they can’t tell I have this invisible illness and I’m not lazy or whatever. I’m so thankful to have found your videos and this is why I sub to you. You’re amazing and after 6 months since I started on Twitch I never imagined I would have 30 friends support me while I game. Thank you Harris for all you do , your advice, you’re friendship and seeing us while you stream, and making ALL of us feel connected to you and that you know us. That’s what sets you apart and I intend to keep doing the same in my streams. See ya soon and again, great video...so raw and vulnerable and you don’t find that often these days. (P.S. this is Ellelaith - figures you might recognize that name vs my YT one). You’re the best man and don’t ever change.

You're one of my biggest inspirations and role models, Harris. A lot of people only see the success in your channel and probably think "he's just lucky", but few actually see the enormous amounts of hard work that you put into your career. Even fewer realize that the kind of success you achieved takes tons and tons of hard work, frustration, overcoming lots of self-doubt and exhaustion.
All people see is the fruits of someone's over-night success, when in reality, that "over-night" success took hundreds of attempts and years of not giving up and trying until it finally works.
Best wishes to you man, I wish I had more time to tune into your stream more often. I love this community.

This was something I was thinking about a few days ago, I feel like I've found the most success in life when I have everything on the line. The problem is, I can never find that zen motivation to push myself to work hard for things when that fear is not there, and I may get complicit over time and I don't want to lose the motivation but at the same time I do not want to live in a constant state of fear.

  • @KelsoUSMC

Very sincere and heartfelt. And that fear is why I stay at my non-streaming job because I have too many responsibilities outside of Twitch or RUclips. I am in a position that if I left my job today, I could find another in my field because I am that good. Seriously, I am not bragging. I get job offers and opportunities at least once every 3 weeks.
My 2 boys, they have a good chance at being a successful streamer but they still have a lot to learn. Unfortunately, they don't take your information seriously and one of them thinks they can grow just streaming on Twitch and nothing else. *yes, I am shaking my head*
My other boy does watch your videos and stream sometimes yet fails to practice what you teach. And that's ok, for now. They are still teenagers in that *I know it all* faze. Things will soon click for each of them and I'll direct them back to this channel.
Harris, I want to thank you for everything you have done so far and you have touched more lives with this channel in a way that nobody else on RUclips has. You may not inspire me to quit my day job, but you definitely have the info needed for the younger generation to be successful streamers by developing the right plan with short and long term goals.
    I thank you.
Tonight sir, you get 10 gifted subs when your stream starts.

I can absolutely relate to this. Last year, I got an email from school saying,”If you don’t get a 2.5 GPA at the end of the semester, then you will lose your scholarships.” In that semester, I pushed hard to get some A’s and B’s, and it was enough to get me a 2.28, So school gave me a year extra to pull it up, and I did. The fear of losing something can really drive someone.

I'm watching this video now, 1 year after being posted, in the middle of a Pandemic that's ruin everything for me and my country (Argentina), not just my economy, but also my life.
I've stopped creating content because of this, my ex and I broke up on the middle of all of this, and this is what scares me the most, the idea of losing her for good, the idea of being alone, of not succeed on my career as a content creator, and that paralized me...
this video is making me see things from another angle, it makes me realize that fear should not be a wall, but fuel.
Thank you, Harris, for real... this video, ambient gold, your streams, your videos with Kenzie, are making me want to step up and take the wheels.
I really hope you read this, I hope this helps you too, helps you to keep doing what you do... your content is changing lives, and I'm serious about that, you helped a lot of people to make their dream come true, and you will keep doing that.
Again, thank you, for being real, for being an amazing content creator, and for being there for us, the ones who need to hear what you have to say.
Peace, my friend, and as always, happy streaming :)

Fear is absolutely the worst thing you can go through, but it’s absolutely one of the biggest motivators to people. I look around at my job I’m at and see all these people who are going on 60-70 years old and up and it terrifies me that I might have to be one of those people. Everyone right now is afraid of our building shutting down and we either have to uproot our lives to a new state or start a new job and make minimum wage all over again. Life is scary, but sometimes those scary moments really push you to be a better person. Love this video, Harris and I love the things you do for this community.

This, was HEAVY. I have that same fear, I also have a fear of not being good enough, for myself, my family. I can work with my fear of failure, I use it to motivate me, the latter however is at times crippling. A lot of your videos have helped and motivated me, kinda given me some remote idea of what I need to be successful at streaming. I have so much respect for you as a person. Thank you for sharing!

What an incredible video that hits this motivator right on the head for me so thank you so much for making it and inspiring me to work even harder! As someone that risked everything to become a game designer even though the field is one of the most competitive fields to work in today, if I didn't have this fear of failure, I wouldn't have worked countless sleepless nights building levels, programming, making art (that would time and time again get thrown out). I wouldn't have made the effort to make connections in the industry. I wouldn't have motivating people to help me through when times got tough. Because of my fear of failure is one of the huge motivators, I now have a full-time job as a game designer in Los Angeles when I started as no one from nowhere (the cornfields of Illinois). Don't scoff at the fear of failure. If you can harness that fear and work hard so that failure you fear doesn't become a reality, you can do some incredible things and soar into whatever you want to be. You just have to have the resolve and clarity of your goal and really think to yourself "Is this what I want to do?" If you know that and the very fiber of your being is telling you that that is what you want to do, then that fear of failure more often than not will carry you. However, to reiterate from the video, the fear of failure can be dangerous and everyone is different in terms of handling it so be careful and know your limits. All I know is the fear of failure among other motivators is how I got to where I am at today.

I love how real you are with your content. You show yourself vulnerable but down to earth relatable. You are a breath of fresh air in a platform so full of fake, attention seeking and toxic roll models. Your showcase practical spirituality without being preachy. Thank you for your work and for your honesty.

Fear and pressure might be something most people will try to avoid, or just crush under it.
I'm grateful for the "ability" to perform better under those circumstances. (mostly 'IRL' job wise)
I'm getting closer to the edge, taking leaps soon and those 2 things.. those 2 keep me focused as fuck.
Thank you for sharing, thank you for openly talk about it and making me feel a bit less isolated.
Gotta stick that head down and get going. :)

GG on this, total fantastic and well put together, one of the reasons I enjoy this channel is because of what you said at the start, you dont puss stuff down peoples throats, personally found that very appealing, but also your honesty and openness, this message was delivered perfectly with the bigger picture in mind.

While I've never given advice on anything that would influence someone to quit their job (as far as I know), I understand that fear. I read a lot of books to learn, and people who know me know I read lots of books, particularly on psychology and nutrition, so they seem to trust what I say about topics I've read about, and I feel responsible if they take action to something I've said, and I get nervous about the possibility of hearing bad news from them about what I've told them having negative consequences. I studied logic and critical thinking to make sure I'm understanding what is and is not true so that I won't be giving out advice that could actually hurt people's psychological and/or nutritional health. And I NEVER give advice to someone with or knows someone with a mental illness, because that terrifies me to think of what could go wrong with bad mental health advice even if I think it would be helpful. So I just tell those people they should see a psychologist. I want to help people with what I learn, but I don't want them to take my word as gospel in case I later find out what I told them is harmful. I ALWAYS tell people that despite the books I read I'm not an expert, and I ask if they'd like to borrow the book I read or read the studies I read. I now read and talk more about how to think (logic and critical thinking) rather than what studies I've read, because I find that to be more helpful overall for anything people are looking for advice for.

Awesome video as always. I found that when i fear something it's best to just walk right through the fear. It never seems as bad as what my mind makes it out to be. Also if i start slacking i get slightly angry and disappointed in myself and when i become disappointed in myself then i know it's time to knock it up a gear and do better.

People need to hear this kind of thing. So many people that I know around me have no idea how much doing anything like this actually takes. Content creating is more then a full time job, I am still very very new to all this and I still have yet to post a decent Video but have learned so much into what it actually takes and it really is one of the scariest things to do. Thank you Harris for all your content and for giving us all inside scoops on what it really takes!!!e

Mate ! You're a legend . . . This video resonates with me on so many levels :)
I started making my channel when I almost lost my job due to retrenchment (fear motivated me to not care about what others thought so I started)
Then I was safe from retrenchment, so, naturally I've slacked off.....
I think I'm going to watch this video every time I get lazy to help me relive that moment of fear.

2:53 THIS.😫I have a well paying 9-5 job in networking and tech support and I give my all when I’m there. However, once I get home, I’m too exhausted for my own goals. When I see other people doing what I dream of doing, I get so inspired, but then I’m back at work, too mentally exhausted to work on my own stuff (especially when it comes to editing videos)😓.The cycle repeats. 😫I am starting to schedule my time so that I can create content consistently on all of my platforms. I even work on my dreams and goals WHILE I’m at work. Every break and lunch break, all my downtime, is put towards my goals. Quitting is NOT an option right now and unfortunately I NEED sleep lol. Honestly, I’m afraid of being “stuck” there forever, but I know that I am meant for something other than this. As long as I just keep putting the same effort and energy towards my aspirations, I WILL make it. 😌Thank you for sharing this video. Your message was delivered concisely, and I often have difficulty explaining these sentiments to other people.😅

I have used your videos for knowledge and inspiration more times than I can count. I appreciate you and I appreciate your fears. I completely agree. A huge part of my brand and channel, is transparency and sharing any tips I have on life, fitness, and over all success. A huge problem with our niche, is that people gain massive amounts of followers, in the complete wrong demographic, and spreads their views that are usually too mature for their audience, as fact. And these kids or younger people breathe this crap in and spread it like wild fire! I completely agree that fear is the biggest motivation as well! I have started many successful business with my wife, friends, and myself. I spent a lot of time being so scared. Not knowing 100% if the business will succeed or if my investment will ever pay off, so far it has. But I NEVER would have taken the leap if I felt secure. My biggest reason for being an entrepreneur is that the 9-5 grind is safe and secure, it's someone else's dream being built and not mine! Great video harris as always!

Fear of failure can be a great motivator. One thing not mentioned, that i think SHOULD be. is even if you are afraid of failure, even if you give your ALL you can STILL fail.
A while back i decided i wanted to run my own IT business. Getting hired for IT where i lived full time was..a nightmare. Way to much supply, very little demand. Most of the jobs i got were consulting jobs. So while in between consulting jobs, doing work at the airport(making ok money) i decided to start my own business. I lived out of my car to save on expenses, i saved every dime i could, i drove to EVERY business in 2 cities offering my services while dressed smartly, with a good looking business card. I took out ad's....and eventually got to the point that i could more than support myself/my business without the job. Indeed at that point the job was in the way, i was having to turn down clients because i just could not get to them in the next 3 days while working 10 hour shifts, it blocked off too much time. So i quit. For a few months things were going well, business was growing, i was doing fine. Then it stalled out....then it tanked. The economy turned bad and every single business i had lined up stopped using me. They also were not using anyone else. Within 6 months of stopping to use me they were bankrupt, most of those within a month or two of stopping. End of the day..the business was a failure. Even now, years later, im not sure there is more i could have done to make it a success. I worked more than ever, I revisited businesses that had said not right now in the past, i continued to do ad's, i had GREAT word of mouth...but everyone was broke, and soon after so was i.
This isnt to shit on anyone's parade, but to point out that you CAN give your all, and just not make it, or only make it for a short while. Get yourself to a position that you can launch something, THEN leap. You will likely as not, plummet to the ground. Then try again. And again. Very VERY few people in any kind of business are successful the first time out. Learn from your mistakes(if you can identify them) and try again. Or go back to a 9 to 5. Dont knock security, it can be a wonderful thing.

Everytime I watch you, it's always a confidence motivator. You continue to inspire me to chase my dreams, to work harder, but at the same time the way you talk about these tips, you tell me it's not easy and it takes more than tips or inspiration to go far. You keep it real, and for that I thank you.
