    I was an audio engineer for a studio when I was 12 years old. Technology is really advancing a lot of stuff we used back then we don't need today. Even as a bottom barrel audio producer you can do amazing stuff with all in ones since everything can be edited in post. Let's not forget that he is speaking of a professional use. There's nothing wrong using a 70$ USB-Mic (I do...) when your audience will listen via phone/laptop speakers.
    If you're singing, speaking professionally etc. then gor for XLR! Get that control!
    If you're gaming or whatever just leave it for now. Invest in lighting, camera, comfort or a coffee machine.

    Something not touched on: you can have a quality signal chain. But if the room that you are in sounds terrible. You get a wonderful and accurate recording of you sounding terrible. There are ways to mitigate a bad sounding room and there are ways to improve the quality of the room. But buying better equipment doesn't fix sound problems.

      Jempanada stick with the snowball for a while, only time it’s really worth it to upgrade your mic is when you are pretty much doing streaming for a living, even a mic on a headset is good enough to stream. Better to spend that money on a pc upgrade, or some lighting and acoustic foam.

    • @jackamtg
      @jackamtg 5 лет назад +3

      @@hoss7065 +1 for the acoustic foam. Lots of people want to spend tons of money on gear, but if your recording environment is bad, then you're not going to get good audio. So what did you actually study when studying audio engineering?
    Like what was your coursework? What did you spend 5 years doing? I've heard several times that the audio engineering side of formal education is pretty dated, and most people learn the skills they need to be an audio engineer through experience in independent research. So that begs the question, what are you actually taught in school?
    Instead of learning about things like gain structuring or how to use compression, do you learn about the foundations of sound waves, what waveforms are, the history of audio technology?

    After some processing it's an absolute beast, but from the scratch is not like something that is going to be super useful for everyone.

    I am looking for a mic upgrade. I have been using the Samson Meteor Mic for 2 years now. My budget for the mic (including other harware needed for it) is $220. I don't have any equipment other than my current (USB) mic, an arm and pop filter.
    What I want to use it for:
    Voice-overs (for tutorials or trailers)
    Stereo/omni audio (asmr like)
    Sound effect recording (game effects).
    I am not brand loyal, so it doesn't have to be from a big brand.
    So it needs to have at least stereo output. I can downmix this to mono for voiceover. So this doesn't need to be hardware implemented (but that would be a nice feature.
    So far the Blue Yeti X, HyperX QuadCast and Samson GTrack Pro look the best rn. But please feel free to change my mind!

  • @EremittV
    @EremittV 4 года назад

    I went with a USB mic because of it's ease of use and because I can replace just one component when I upgrade. If you go for a similar priced XLR setup you'll want to upgrade everything as well anyway. In your example you buy a 100$ usb mic or a 100$ XLR mic with an 80$ mixer. Upgrading the USB mic costs more, but working with audio and developing your content/brand has given you a clearer picture on what kind of setup you want to create. Plus, the USB mic can be used for on-the-go purposes now so it's still getting use. Upgrading XLR components aren't that easy to reuse, since you still need the rest of the components to make use of it. Plus, the most obvious use of multiple mics/setups (one for in the studio and one for on the go) is a lot less viable if you need to bring a mixer with you everywhere you go.

    Most of Yamaha & Behringer's cheaper mixers (like the ones you show in this video) do NOT have analog compression & EQ as you said. It's digital compression and EQ run from the processing units in the boards. You have to get to the much higher-end boards to get analog EQ and compression.

The $32 Mike seems like a massive Improvement to the headset mic. Or should I use a throwaway USB mic like your starter Samsung?
    Or should I considering a dynamic mic for RUclips recordings.

      For the price and will hook into a good seat of headphones like the Phillips 9500 I’d get a boom mic pro the sound quality is great are as good as the usb condenser mics if you want pro sound then get a audio interface for about $100 and a good condenser microphone for another $100 or your budget and you will have as good of audio quality as possible that route but another think with xlr and instrument cables get quality cables they are as important as the microphone cheap xlr condenser mics sound great as long as there going through good cables and remember itll be tweakable in your eQ settings then add a touch of reverb add a compresser and Limiter to get rid of unwanted frequencies and boom you can sound like a legend .
      I just would skip the high dollar usb mics and suffice with a good quality mic like the Vmoda one I’m talking about in most your recording software you will be able to tweak your microphone channel and get decent RUclips video sound with a $30.00 headphone mic....

      Memes aside you gain a little more quality compressing the audio levels before it's converted to digit so his mixer of choice is ideal for live audio. Unless you are using rtx voice which is amazing for removing background noise (although lately it's been buggy for me which tbf unstability is a bad thing for live audio)

  • @tgrimes175

    First off, mic position will take away the higher frequencies. Second off, EQ, Compression can all be done after the recording with a USB mic. You can use any DAW with EQ, Compression, etc. I also would like to say I don't hear that much of a difference. Most people don't have 400 dollar headphones to hear a slight difference in quality. Most people listen to music with ear buds and their cellphone, or in the car, etc.

All the comparisons I've found are the same sort of male voice, and not really scraping the bottom of the market.

    This might mean padding, this might mean streaming in a closet, ik a lot of voice actors who just put a bunch of blankets around them. If you're not using a camera get stupid with it. There's a lot of really good tutorials on how to treat a room on RUclips.
