    After testing, this does work with XLR mics. I have my Shure running through my rodecaster pro. Then I use the source tab to add the rodecaster pro to the Wave 3 program. I then press the mute button ontop of the wave 3 so that it doesnt interfere with the sound quality. If you use obs, do not put your mixer as a device, put another wave 3 input with the Wave Stream Link selection. You can still add the wave mic to OBS by adding another device as Mic Input (Wave 3). Just label them differently so you don't get confuse and be sure to mute your mixer in OBS and mute the wave 3 mic either in your program or by pressing the phyiscal button on top. If you don't you will get a echo from both mics being captured.

    My bro!
    That NDA is killing me. haha
    Real talk.. You were a huge help in my decision making while taking my streams to a new level.
    Elgato is a name and product line I passed by many many times because it seemed too much cost for little benefit.
    I may still stand in that thinking; however, my praise is still coming. Mostly to you Mr. H.
    I took to heart what you said about the GOXLR in many of your videos, mostly because of the need for a compact I/O diverse solution, I have XLR mics and prefer them, and the digital audio mapping, and the voice changer, and the professional clean up, and and and! RGB LIGHTS!
    Watching this video made me scratch my head.
    Not a single thing you mentioned the GOXLR not having the capacity for, am I not actively doing right now. In fact, I already have had my streamdeck set up to submix and re-mapping. Plus.. You can entirely change the GOXLR profile from the stream deck, giving it an entirely different approach to changing mapping on the sliders while changing an OBS scene, iCUE lights, Philips Lights, send a Twitch Message and.... Well.. I hope you get the point; and yes, I do all that stuff with just one button push on the streamdeck.
    Nice video though, I do think I want to buy an Elgato Mic, thanks to you Elgato has me buying lots of toys, but the GOXLR stands in a realm of it's own still.
    My only issue I heard with the WAVE mic was the close-up audio quality wasn't favorable. But from a distance the WAVE and competition wad dead heat.

    There is one more advantage the GoXLR has and that is specifically for console streamers: it can receive audio directly from the console via optical cable. That feature alone was what put it on my radar back when you started talking about the GoXLR. The Wave is a great product for people starting out (and coming out just as I started convincing my missus to stream with me!). I don't foresee this replacing the GoXLR for anyone who already has it but I think Blue might have to step it up now. The Yeti has a formidable challenger now.

    Have to agree on physical faders. That will always be the defining feature for me, and why i went through absolute hell (well before the GoXLR was a thing) to set up a physical mixer in a two-PC setup. being able to adjust audio quickly and accurately without clicking to the proper window, or workarounds like "incremental button presses on a streamdeck" are always going to be the superior method, IMO.
    I'm still unable to use the GoXLR in my setup as i require more than one XLR mic for live guests on stream, but if i could get away with that, i would, for sure. That's all I really would like in the market (even if it would be more pricey). A GoXLR with four more faders and a few more mic inputs.

  • @AnthonyGoodley
    @AnthonyGoodley 4 года назад +7

    I feel like there wasn't enough emphasis placed upon one major difference. That would be that whereas the GoXLR does most, if not all, of the audio processing using dedicated hardware the Wave does everything within software.
    For some this likely wouldn't matter much if at all. Like those using a 2 PC setup or those with kick ass performance level specs. For others doing more in software could be an issue where they are gaming and streaming from the same PC. Especially ones who's PC already are being pushed hard and put away wet each steam.
    For the price this Wave USB mic does bring a lot to the table and many, many will turn to it I'm sure.

  • @Jagged_Jackal
    @Jagged_Jackal 4 года назад

    What I would dream for is a 'Stream Deck Slider' device. Have 4-5 sliders and a bottom row of LCD buttons for each slider. Effectively the GoXLR Mini sans hardware processing. Then I think you would have a GoXLR killer. Pair the slider with another stream deck and you just expanded. You can string multiple together giving full flexibility. The professional hardware of the GoXLR isn't enough of a pull when a USB mic is 'good enough' for most setups.

  • @Phippsy

    This a a fantastic option for people who already don’t have a go xlr, and haven’t gone down the xlr mic road. Glad to see there are more options.
    Goxlr quality with an xlr mic is still going to win out and I don’t see that changing. However goxlr with a usb mic inputted into it via 3.5mm is not a direct upgrade maybe now that this is released. If nothing else having options too not have too jump at a goxlr until you have more income coming in from streaming is pretty awesome imo and a great step forward for the streaming community.

    • @Phippsy
      @Phippsy 4 года назад

  • @waquo
    @waquo 4 года назад

    One thing I missed was a discussion of latency in dual PC or console setups.
    The GoXLR usually gets that audio over its optical input and should have in on the headphones in about 6ms or whatever the processing latency of the DSP is now.
    For the Elgato Wave I guess there would be latency introduced both by the software and the USB connection which I would expect to add up to the tens of milliseconds.
    In a world where gamers obsess about frame rate and input latency I believe that hearing footsteps and gunshots delayed is also worth talking about.

    on the topic of software vst's, if you are already okay with taking the cpu hit to do software vst's then cantabile is a good option. Cantabile is simply a vst host program that will allow you to use ANY vst you want (there are tons of awesome free vst's out there, everything from your standard noise suppression, gates, eq, compression, to reverb, voice changers, autotune, etc). It even plays nicely with voicemeeter, sitting in between it and the output and therefore allowing your mic to sound consistent across all apps (discord, obs, etc) without having to set things up multiple times. It DOES add a small amount of latency to the mic though, so you will have to add a delay to your webcam in obs to sync things up again.

    For a 2 PC setup, you could plug the Wave into the streaming PC and connect line out from the gaming PC to the line in on the streaming PC. I think the Elgato Wave won't kill the Go XLR, purely for the fact that physical hardware is easier to access than software. Say I'm playing a game, and I want to lower my teammates volume. With a Go XLR, I could simply drag the fader down. With an Elgato Wave, I would have to Alt+Tab out of my game, pull up the Wavelink software, and drag the fader down with my mouse. However the Wave, is after all also a microphone and much cheaper, so it will definitely change the stream audio market.

    I have been looking at options as I do want to add a USB mic setup as eventually, I will be wanting to add a mic setup as a Blogger. Just so many options out there. Pay for something like the Elgato Wave XLR or just buy the Wave 3 USB Mic. Nice to know if I go with the Wave 3 with all Boom Arm it will cost me about $500 Canadian. I do know that by doing it by USB Mic the processing is being done on the computer, not through the Mic. So there is a trade-off. To go with the truce XLR would cost me an extra $100, which really is not much more. One other advantage is my desk would be cleaner as I would not have another thing on my desk. So think I will go with the USB Mic.

      Wave 3 has built-in pop filter as well, and also the sound sounds "worse" because there are no VSTs - for now (until Elgato updates Wavelink) you would need third party software to add VSTs (noise gate, noise supression, etc.) and once you do, it sounds just as good as the rest of them.

  • @onlykat.-9644
    @onlykat.-9644 4 года назад

    I think the only things keeping the GoXLR (especially the Mini, for a more fair price comparison, I guess) over the Wave mics are the built-in VST's (which is easier than having to download and setup VSTs, and they also eat up some resource off your PC in case any performance freak cares about how much FPS in game it'd eat up for those who have to run single-pc streams) and choice of mics, as there are streamers who run SDC's, some even run headsets where the mic plug for it is in XLR (I.E. Audio Technica BPSH1/2, Beyerdynamic DT 797, etc...), so on and so forth. I personally would prefer if Elgato just made something like the GoXLR but smaller than the mini and it wouldn't be a bad idea if the PC its plugged in to would have some of its resources eaten as well as having VSTs in there (also noise gate being a bit of a priority).

  • @gizcraft4523

    Honestly, even if it isn't that convenient, TC Helicon can easily push a software update to add sub mixes, wouldn't be as nice as faders, but it adds the functionality. The fader could control what you hear, and not what stream hears, since you want to keep consistent the sound that stream hears

    I think if someone was coming from nothing, it seems like the best choice. I don’t know why the microphone is required to use the software other than to sell the microphone. I would probably pay for the software by itself if I could continue to use the hardware I already have. Have you ever looked at VoiceMeter Potato? You get three software devices and 5 hardware inputs, and the same number of outputs, noise gate and compression and an EQ among other things. You can add more software devices with the virtual cables and have up to 5. Anyway, I really like the software, don’t need the hardware.

    Audio engineer's perspective:
    The Elgato Wave Mic isn't too bad. I don't think the blue yeti x was the best representation as it has different polar patterns and it sounds like you were using the omni polar pattern, which is NOT meant for the use you were doing. omni is perfect if you have multiple people surrounding the mic so they can all be heard well. You want to use cardioid, which will allow for proximity effect (the bass boost when you are closer to the mic). Based on my knowledge it doesn't seem that the Wave mic was as clear as other competitors (definitely heard better from blue). That being said, the Wave comes with software the yeti doesn't. that alone is major appeal and i'd definitely recommend it to peeps just because of that over the yeti.
    Appeal of the go XLR: it's a physical device. sure you can program a stream deck to do the things the goxlr does, but it's not the same as bringing up or down a fader. for simple streams (you are managing a game and voice chat) this matters less, but for more complex streams where many things are happening at once. Complex streams where they do stuff on the fly with videos, FX, and bring in other peeps, this is a game changer. I currently use software for my stream (I do music streams and gaming) it's a pain in my butt. I am very grateful i bought faders to do a lot of the work for me. Had I never done music i'd highly recommend having hardware faders vs software. it's about workflow and speed as you know. how long/many times would you have to press the buttons on your elgato to get it to a certain level for a certain thing? Let's so you do song requests on stream and someone gives you a crazy loud track they did. or a super soft one. you gotta balance those levels out on the fly. takes less than a second to do that with a fader. GoXLR is a cheap interface + mixer setup. and I highly recommend everyone get a mic that is USB and XLR for room for expansion vs just USB.
    that being said, there is a very thin market for this product for starting streamers, but overwhelmingly the market leans towards GoXLR devices and mixers (a mackie proFX8 mixer is even cheaper at $150). I feel like all of these options are just gimmicks marketed at people who don't know any better. sure the cheapest option is always gonna be a USB mic like a blue yeti, but the best long term value? that'll go to a decent dynamic (I've seen some streams with SM58s) and an interface or mixer (depends on mac or PC there) either of which won't run you more than 150. add in a cheap pop filter, stand and decent cable, and you're at 300 about the same price as the other options. the kicker is that for those with no audio or music knowledge, a USB mic that does everything easily is the way to go because of ease of setup. not for quality or anything.

    Only problem I see with this is not the Mic or the software, but actually the Stream Deck itself. I have SO MANY problems with the stream deck and I'm convinced it will never work 100% right. I am CONSTANTLY uninstalling/reinstalling the spotify application on it, having to keep resigning into both my twitch to get the instant chat messages to work, and spotify to get the pause and play to work. Okay, this is really cool. Now I don't HAVE to save up for a GoXLR and supporting equipment just to have a convenient, good quality audio setup. This bridges the gap between a dirt cheap setup, and a GoXLR setup without being overcomplicated. Don't get me wrong, I still want one, but this is a good stepping stone. Hell, this is potentially endgame if you don't need some of the GoXLR features that this doesn't have and if you don't need an sm7b, but honestly... this is better sounding audio then half the stuff I hear on Twitch.

    The Wave won sound wise against both at close range. The Wave sounds fuller. Far away they all sound pretty similar. The Wave and the HyperX sounded to me almost the same but the Yeti sounded more distant like you were a foot or more away. That's just what it sounded out to my ears.
    I watched another streamer review these (and I'm guessing it's with all USB mics) he said using 2 Wave's together was a little difficult to set up. Also, USB mics you hear more background noise if you're in a loud area without good sound dampening, but that's just the type of mic.

    Quite well featured and comprehensive microphone and software. I'm actually quite impressed by it. A question, did you try anything to gain match the mics during comparison?
    And if I may... VST is actually the plugin technology develoved by Steinberg that is now common among DAWs. What you actually mean is just plain 'audio plugin inserts' implementation, either native(Elgato made plugins that will only work in this mic app), VST plugins(made by hundreds of plugin developers and supported by most audio related apps) or Audio Units(Apple's propriety audio plugin integration also made by many plugin developers). VST also has a VSTi implementation which is VST Instruments or virtual instruments.
