Harris is so right about what he says about growing based on other platforms. I would never have been able to build the stream I did without my youtube channel. I've spent on average 10-12 hours EVER DAY for 2 years with combined 2 weeks of vacation (where I worked on my content from my mobile phone anyway).

It's not something for everyone. It's something anyone could do, but most people won't. It's not all fun and games (pun intended you nerds). There's a lot of grunt work. What Harris talks about with establishing a presence on other platforms is foreign and new to me also. But that's life. That's adulting. It's all for that greater purpose of being in control of what you do with your time and how you get to express yourself. It takes sacrifice, but it is the most rewarding thing in the world.

So I'm quite curious to get my juices flowing and talking to some people to share this idea with, and I am curious to know if my idea /might/ work, or if I would just waste my time?
I get that being loud, energetic, excited, charismatic, "super out there" is all great and a good way to get yourself more easily noticed by people in Twitch. However, I don't have that. I am not skilled at video games, I'm not loud, don't get super energetically hyped for stuff most of the time. I have more of a comforting personality, and I'm curious if anybody thinks there's a possible demographic who might be into that? I don't mean me sitting silently playing games, I would love to talk about anything, and if there are people in the chat then I would love to built a tight, close community with them. Getting to know them and even having some of them on my streams (maybe once a week, it can be a whole special segment!), and a place for people to come to just feel some relief from stress, take a break, not do anything.
Any ideas, criticisms and everything will be taken into consideration! I'd love to have a discussion about this!! :)

I feel the same way about myself, I'm not the most energetic nor funny guy and have been quite happy with my streams and my viewers seem to be happy too. So I think it's important to understand that there are pretty much the same amount of people who'd rather watch a chill dude play videogames than an overly excited guy screaming at everything.

Being myself and authentic and talkative on my stream (while streaming something as boring as training agility on OSRS) is coming WAY more naturally to me than I thought. My supportive fiancé after a stream one night goes , “wow. You didn’t stop talking. The entire time.” I’ve never gunned this hard for a dream/ dream job in my life. Another thing is I don’t want to aim for 5%, that just doesn’t seem like enough. I want to give every bit of my real self to my audience to show them my content is and will be worthwhile. THANK YOU Harris for helping me validate my self worth and trajectory on this amazing journey.

This is not my problem and this is not somebody elses issue. I already dealt with this friends and girlfriends and I can definitely tell you that they can betray you and they can suck you into some deep shit. So it feels safer alone. Why not?

Love these genuine chats! Starting out on Mixer since I didn't have a twitch following from the start. I'm a very interactive person and love to chat with an audience, so feel like mixer allows me to do something close to that better than twitch in my current 1-4 viewer status. Making videos too and editing takes a lot out of my time but it's so worth and I LOVE what I'm doing. I'm excited to "work" everyday. SO THANK YOU for the inspiration!
*NOTE* - I'm looking for a proper NETWORKING video, how to network, how it is like to network, how much time is spent on networking per day... just an actual genuine network video that really shows you the minimum input required to grow. That and a normal day in a STREAMERS life, how much time you spend before stream, how you plan ahead, what your work day looks like, how is your schedule... just something... more tangible than 'advice' if you know what I mean (this is personal so I know it's not something many share)

And I noticed that people get REALLY DEFENSIVE for giving better tips than what they could've ever thought of, or other ideologies that they just refuse to accept or can't understand. It gets really hairy which is sad b/c they complain about their streams or channels and the lack of growth or money or whatever but then when you give them ACTUALLY GOOD ADVICE, then they don't want to hear it. Interesting thing that I found out from a streamer friend/ mentor who’s into data mining.
Rule #1 (Rare Exceptions): Your average viewership will be around 1% of your follow-base. Majority of which will be lurkers.
Rule #2: Anywhere from 72-98% of follow rate will be in the Top 5 Streams of a directory. This can also be a driving exception to Rule #1.
Unless you are consistently a King in Rule #2, this is where strategies like Harris’ external content setup can be incredibly helpful. Boosting your chances to take that directory throne and also being an active solution to Rule #1.
    Neat Food For Thought.

My man is reading a book(and telling me about it) about how this man advocates for doing 10x the work above everyone. To have ridiculously large dreams and do 10x the work you think it needs. Then when/if you fall short of that ridiculous goal, you’d probably still be happy with the result. The author hates mediocrity and believes it’s basically a fate worse than death. Most ppl live mediocre lives, so when they question “why” or try to advise you about how it won’t work or how it’s silly, they are leading you down their own path of mediocrity. This guy has good advice. You gotta put in the extra work and try things that perhaps make you uncomfortable. Great vid Harris.

Thank you for sharing your experience! Just a treasure among other channels about like "how to grow on youtube or twitter fast in 2019, 2020, 2021" and others. Straight to the point, awful truth about those platforms such as Twitch and YT - in 99.99% you will NOT succeed. This truth must be known by beginners.

Harris Heller, thanks for this video, I've been feeling a little down about streaming lately, most people think I am wasting my time and progress is slow. I'm promising you now, I WILL MAKE IT. Streaming and content creation is my dream gig and I'm going to make it happen no matter what. And you'll have played a part in my successs. I'll repay you someday :)

I have zero interest in making videos about games. I don't play games, I'm not a gamer. But I REALLY enjoy your videos because they're informative and include information I can adopt for the content I want to make. Keep it up, Alpha!

100% that crunchy roll binge. That grind it takes to do streaming/content creation to be profitable is not worth the time it takes. Its a GREAT creative outlet and super fun. And thats all it will ever be for me.

I like to think about the theory of "next generation of streamers" and that groups of individuals always have that high potential to be "the next one" and that it could haooen at any moment. I like to think I'm next sometimes but I think that's just a pipe dream

I know what i have to do... What Harris says is so true. Problem is I'm not a creative person nor a really social person anymore. I'm not social cause I've spent so much time in my room playing games, editing, watching others and making things for my streams, that i got disconnected socially. Now when i get back to streaming from my break, I feel like I won't be able to perform, engage and have fun...

My mind is 100% on it and i will not give up. It is my dream and i will make it happen! Thank you for an extra inspiration man!

Thank you, sir, for doing this reality check video. There are so many youngsters that see these streamers and think they can get paid for doing nothing but play games. Finally someone comes out and mentions investing in yourself before you expect to make something of yourself in the industry. I've been a nobody streamer for years until I came across one of your early videos about branching out. I invested in some nice equipment and started pumping out youtube videos. Some get good traction, some don't, either way, it helped. I get way more views on this platform than I do on twitch, and eventually I'll try to migrate them over. But I do this as a hobby. I have a great government job and have no plans to ever quit doing that for content creation, regardless of the money.

Watching this a year and a bit later and this actually made me feel good about what I'm doing as a newbie because I feel like I am putting in that work and I am providing something that the other small streamers aren't. It's still gonna take a lot more work, I'm prepared to put in that effort. Always trying to get better. And who knows what'll happen.
that said, I do need to work on my content on other platforms. My YT content has been on the lazy side with just exporting twitch highlights like a let's play and I'm not satisfied with that.

What's really true is that I think the key to success is to be better than others, and even that 5% might be enough. I graduated as an engineer having a shit ton of pain, depression till I finished it because I'm not a huge brain. But so I studied (let's say5% more), never gave up (many of us didn't make it, or still struggling to finish it). Recently I was accepted at a job, which is a fantastic position, but the others applying for it were also very educated, good looking and smart. But what I could do, is practice my body language, presentation, foreign languages, took on a nice outfit, so I turned (let's say 5%) more investment into the applying, and I got the job. This is not about boasting, but proving a point Harris said. In this month, I wanna start streaming and I hope following this method I will make it as a successful streamer as well.

Hey. I’ve been thinking a lot about how I can make my stream and content stand out on twitch, and RUclips. I just want some opinion about what road I should take. First of all, I love computers and everything to do with technology. I’ve ran sound, and lights for many school productions, and I can pretty much do anything on the computer if I put my mind to it. I also recently built my first computer! I’d say I’m an intermediate video editor on resolve and premiere, and I have a large passion for the Disney parks, which is actually where I hope to work in the future. I’m also very musical and I have gone to “state” for drumming. Any thoughts?

    Point 2:
Those that don’t want it. Won’t go for it. I am a small streamer. But I get a large portion of chatters that come in first day and go “OMG I get to see you live! I’ve been watching so much of your videos!”
And THAT is the payoff I need.
    Go gettem people.

Harris, to help give more weight to your suggestion of using a webcam, take a look at Game Theory here on RUclips. Of course MattPat is massive here, and if you see the trajectory he's set for his channel he started out without appearing on his videos at all. Gradually he started including pictures of himself during his animations, and now he's actually breaking into his videos on camera. Of course this is RUclips but I think the same principles apply here, and we all know that MattPat is a fan of analyzing things from all angles. He didn't make this decision on a whim. It's psychology.
He's *Also* an exception to the rule. He has millions of subscribers on RUclips, and he accomplished that without a webcam. However, even he's changed his stance, and I suspect it's for similar reasons to why you recommend it.
To further lend credence to your recommendation on making content on other platforms, here I am, nearing 40k subscribers on RUclips, and I'm quickly gaining steam on Twitch compared to a lot of my contemporaries who do not make side-content. I've only been on Twitch for about a year solid now, and have around 3000 followers on Twitch now, and a huge portion of that is because of my RUclips audience coming to hang out.

Sorry for the long message. Thanks for all the advice and direction that you and your team provide. I stumbled upon your channel some time ago while looking for information on twitch streaming. I game on the PS4 PRO console and had to be educated on capture cards (using the elgato hd60 S), streaming software (using OBS with OBS Live plugin), audio/sound/mics (got the Samson G-Track PRO), webcam/camera( using a microsoft 720p webcam, but will be upgrading to the Brio or Canon SL2 sometime in the future).
Your videos provided me with all the information needed on this subject. I followed your stream elements video on how to add animation to my stream, still trying to figure out how to add a link to the twitch stream as you asked to your dropbox and video for support.
I am from Cape Town South Africa and we usually have difficulties when it comes to streaming, online gaming etc due to the servers being in other countries and our ISP’s charging a lot of money for fibre connections. But I can successfully stream at 720p 60fps with no frame drop, 1080p at 60 fps is also possible, but still tweaking some settings.
Keep up the good work, you deserve all the subs and success.

Well said. I work 40 -56 hours a week minimum and have a wife and 20 month old daughter, and i still squeeze in three 4th hour streams a week into my mornings. I lose tiny sliver of sleep, but you HAVE to give something to reach your goals. So don't be mad, just put in the work and acquire the skills.
