This video hit me at a moment when I'm going through exactly this.
I just started Streaming on Twitch, and it began slow, but then started to pick up. I became affiliate I got 200 followers, 10-20 viewers and one sub.
And that guy, the guy who subbed, had been with me since it was just me and him. We used to talk about all kinds of things. And I loved it when I suddenly saw I had a sub, and it was him.
Then something happened in my life that caused me to move, and I had had 2 months with no streaming. (One thing just lead to another)
I came back to it, and the sub was gone. Make perfect sense right, I disappeared. But I really thought he would come back, but so far, I haven't seen him on even once.
And I really miss that dude.

I’m sorry to hear that man - that’s gotta hurt. All you can do though is keep pushing and keep going at it and hope that one day he’ll look you up and see that you’re back and streaming regularly again.
That one guy, while important to you, doesn’t define who you are. It also should show you that he didn’t leave because you “weren’t worthy of following” but only because you disappeared. There will be more dudes like him. The follows will come. The subs will come. Just give it time - easier said than done though.
Just went through a similar experience and having a discord server so I could keep in touch with everyone and update them over the month I was gone helped my return tremendously - so maybe look into that.
      Hope this helped.

I can relate to this so hard. In 2011-2013 I was a call of duty/ battlefield channel making 30k-50k views a video. One day I was up to 6k subscribers and realized my channel didn’t look the best so I asked one of my RUclips friends if he could make me a background and he agreed. (At that point we have been talking for about 6 months online so he felt like a genuine friend.) When he sent me the design I couldn’t get the background to save. I was so excited about the design I gave him my RUclips login.
He went in deleted all my videos, changed my email, password. EVERYTHING. I lost it all. I was a stupid young kid who thought I had a friend. Because of that I went out and got a degree in graphic designer and became a great one.
But that loss of importance having that amount of people like and comment positive things on my videos everyday has hit me hard throughout the years because I haven’t came close to that ever again.

Jesus Christ, I really needed this...
I need to say something that struck me and left me speechless...
So been watching your YT Channel for a hot minute for the amazing Stream Dr. advice (keep it up!) and applying what I can to my channel. Well at this last TwitchCon, on Thursday for badge pick up me and my group of friends head to TC in an Uber. Once we get there I hop out and grabbed my stuff, closed the door, turn around and THE HELL you were right in front of me heading out from badge pick up rolling your suit case near the Uber drop off... Was so star struck I couldn't even react to say "HOLY SH---! Hey Alpha!" but yeah beating myself up from that now even more after watching this... Been battling depression before and after TC and getting better thankfully. So just wanted to comment and say... Thank you for this is and being real for all of us... I really needed this more than ever, near the end it got super emotional for me cause its help shed some light on some questions that were always in the back of my mind for a while and to know someone knows the pain and struggles of accepting yourself as a person and as a content creator...
Again... Thanks for this and will say, mission accomplished.
This help me more than you know.
    Much Love

I find this relevant and interesting, and I'm not even a content creator yet. I have a mostly-off Instagram for my cat, and that's it. I feel similar feelings at my salaried consulting job, and I've found it's a surprisingly (and also sadly) common experience for a lot of us in my company. Especially those of us who have that "persona" problem - where we have to, for our clients' sake, put on a certain "show". It's been a hell of a (painful) journey to get to a point where I now recognize my own successes, shortcomings, and realities with a sort of objectivity. Lots of people have helped, and lots of self-reflection was needed, but it feels somewhat like a relief also. Somehow. Like it isn't so bad just being myself.
Thanks for having this sort of talk with us, Harris. I really appreciate it.

This is so true, people in general are quick to judge when their perceived success of you is high. As if you being known/successful means you’re not a human being who struggles. The reality is, success and whatever that means, brings its own set of challenges and setbacks. We all have challenges, they don’t magically go away, they simply transform into new and different challenges.

    • @AstroNerdBoy

I'm a tiny channel as well. However, I will say that when it comes to dislikes for a live stream, I would suspect trolls. When it comes to game advice videos, some people can be VERY tetchy about a game and if your opinion isn't one they agree with, it is an immediate dislike. I personally don't get that as I almost never dislike a video unless it is a bait-and-switch or otherwise massively misleading, but that's how some folks roll.
Finally, in one of your videos with a lot of dislikes, the only problem I saw is that you aren't lit properly and the monitor(s) reflect off your glasses. I don't know if folks gave a dislike for that. But even in the video these comments are attached to, the guy is in a dark room, but his face is still decently lit. I think if you had proper lighting, maybe the monitor glare off your glasses wouldn't be as bad. (It is something to experiment with.)

So i snuck a look at your channel and from what i can see you seem to get a decent amount of views considering your still growing your audience. Im not the biggest youtuber either but you could possibly make it so your number of subs isnt visable to the. It may sound weird but i have found peolpe will and wont sub for certain reasons. The same as if your video had 1k views and the one next too it had 100 veiws people will be more likely to watch yours and assume that the other video must be no good, when this isnt the case in most instances. Worth a shot, remember we all start some where. (it took me 8 months for 100 subs on YT)😃

      @BigDavehs 4 года назад

@@Holly_Huntress I'll be honest, I got a voucher for an online company who promised me 'real views and results' so I tried that. Hence why most of my videos only have around 30 views and 2 have 1k. I think it is the same person, its more or less every single time I upload. Within a day it has a dislike. I honestly dont mind, but would prefer if they left a comment saying what they didnt like so I could try and address it. But I've had my low, I'm going to carry on and try and make each video better. What really bites is somebody cloned my account and was posting my stream videos to it. That account has over 1k subs! Hopefully it's being dealt with as I have reported it many times, but still I wish those subs would come to my actual channel!

This is a crazy hard topic to discuss with those that don't understand that struggle. When our self worth is based on what others think of us especially when our jobs revolve around relevancy in the culture.

This was excellent, thank you. I think for anyone that's put any real time and effort into streaming that this is stuff we already know inside... but hearing it out loud is powerful. It's easy to shrug it off and pretend it doesn't affect you, but it does. Especially as someone that's been "trying" for several years and has yet to really find my "niche". I find all of your videos super helpful and inspiring, even when it's hard truths. Forever I was that guy trying to get found by just streaming every day, and I got frustrated and burned out. I've taken a step back and I'm trying to re-organize and re-imagine, including planning to utilize other platforms, like youtube. It just feels overwhelming sometimes. The idea that I'm "selling myself" is.. uncomfortable in a way, but I think that stems from issue of self worth as you talk about. How can I "sell" myself to others when even I don't see my value? Streaming, it's live and it's spontaneous, but with RUclips I need prepared content and I haven't been able to really identify what it is I can offer, yet. Thinking about all that has made me also consider my live content in a different way as well. I also discovered Devin Nash recently. So.. huge thanks to you and some to him, but I now have an idea of what it all really requires and I'm dedicated to figuring out my path and hitting the grind with a coherent plan of action, rather than just hitting "start stream" every day and hoping for the best.

This is a problem that also hits in "real life". It is a natural tendency of us to move towards being accepted. I have strugled with that a lot in my social life an in my past projects. It went to the point of making impossible to continue with them. I closed several webs, blogs, channles... because of these.
And I have learned something: You only need to think if that people arround you are the kind of people you want arround. It does not matter if you apply this to your friends or your audience. Forcing yourself to be a compeling person to others that expect something from you that you don't have is the fastest and most effective way to depression. I have been there.
Thank you very mucho for your work. I completely get the point of the video. You are giving me the willing of starting again with this thing that I love. I could not be grateful enought.

i been streaming on twitch since it was justin.tv. i never changed who i am and never really will unless its the best for me. even though i dont get viewers or new followers. i kept streaming for years. well over 10 years at this point. it has never stopped me from trying. it has never changed me. regardless if i have 0-10 viewers i wouldnt change and i wouldnt try to fit in with the "kool kids" of streaming because their vision is different from mines. i do this because i love broadcasting. i loved radio growing up and streaming is the next best thing. and i will never stop no matter the follower count or views. its about the passion of broadcasting. sadly i recently moved to mixer to give it more of a chance. and yeh same thing. no viewers no new followers. but that hasnt made me quit. stay weird be humble be yourself. why fit in when you can stand out. if people actually comes to your stream or not.

Hi my real is Lino I’m 20 years old and when I was 12 the year I decided to set my goals to become a RUclipsr. I wanted to make RUclips my dream job even though my mother thought it was a joke and my school counselors thought it impossible. Of course that tear me down cuz I had no support of my dream but truly that didn’t stop me, at the age of 16 I got my first pc and I start uploading low quality Minecraft let’s play, even tho I got no view at that time, but it still motivated me to keep on going. Money wasn’t there for me at that time but I truly made it a goal in life. When I turn 18 I got my self a part time job and start to processed on my dream. I saved up enough money to buy all the things I needed to start RUclips. Once I had the money I needed I quit my job and continue to processed on my dream, I spend in totally 1000 dollars of used pc parts so I could build a pc and got my self an elgato so I could start recording video. I would average 50- 100view per video, I was happiest person in 2017. Sooner then later my life was gonna fall apart, 2018 I had that most depression I have ever felt in life, I was 19 at the time. Problem was I wasn’t a kid no more and I had responsibilities and bills to take care of. I ignored the fact that I was adult and that RUclips wasn’t gonna pay for my rent and seeing that wasn’t going no where in life. So I start doubting myself and started thinking to myself that those people were right and that I wasn’t gonna be shit. So I quit, sold all my monitors, keyboard and broke my pc that I build. The only thing I had left was my elgato, tbh I’m glad I didn’t sell it cuz now then ever I feeling 100x more motivated then before. I see now that becoming a RUclipsr or Big Steamer takes time and a lot of dedication. I truly feel like I’m ready give it another shot, by New Years I should I have everything i need to continue where I left off. Back and better than ever before money looking good and my dream looking like believable. I thank you for all the knowledge u have taught us Harris u r truly gonna be a inspirational part in my life, thank you!

Never thought about this until now tbh.....but I heed your warning that it could be a problem down the line, especially that I come from a middle-eastern background where being different is not always welcomed! but yeah just being myself :D....it is depressing putting so much effort into my content (and gotten positive feedback already!) and having 1 viewer show up and then disappear lol but I'm learning to not take it personally. Its just the way things are. I'm lucky enough to have a successful career in another field so its not all or nothing for me....just doing it for the fun! :D. anyways keep the great videos coming! thanks mate!

Thank you for this video Harris. I was in this spot last night after stream. I had a fun stream despite averaging 3 viewers but I was playing The Outer Worlds and doing impressions and my broadcaster voice and all that stuff.
But stream ended, I raided a fellow streamer friend and then...my depression hit (you only had 3 people who watched you and you have 378 followers) that kind of stuff. It's really rough but as you said learning to accept yourself for who you are and embracing that is so key to what we're doing as content creators. So thank you, so much for this.

This subject definitely hits home for me. I've always loved to analyze games and give help with anything from guiding someone through a level, or even strategies or build guides for multiplayer to just going over what caused the loss and what can be done better. But I kinda hid that when I started streaming in 2011 because I would have viewers telling me to shut up and play. So I did, and things started to go up for some time, but then dropped. I kept doubting myself and why I was even bothering anymore. It took a long time to move past that for me, but I am getting there and getting back to my self and what I love doing and is really part of who I am. I'm happy the be the game analyzing guy again and I have found myself with new groups of similar people.

a few weeks ago, I came upon you and your work. Of course by my dream to get into this streaming adventure/work. The type of guy, who you often relate to, in these images of guys who want to start things from scratch. I fell well related to this. A good gamer 90% weirdo 10% of social-looser chase his dream. 0 relations atm and a few kilos of budget given out for this dream. Such sentences like "may there are other weirdos who wanna have friends" are things that give me so much more enthusiasm for my dream. I'm glad that I found a creator who shares his experience. I have wanted to stream for a while now and have heard of some of the best, most positive people that I like watching on RUclips and Twitch now and just had to hear the other side of the story. I have always been a small creator and used to the small audience, and hope that others take this path and do what they love. This video was very helpful and it made me think about and realize that other people I hang out with today are the weird, quirky people who want to be themselves, and was able to do it around me and my other friends. This has awakened a part in me I keep hidden and didn't know I did until now, and I hope that I can make a living in the future by streaming, just don't let the negatives bring you down.

Just found this video and as someone who struggles with depression and anxiety who also has started streaming and trying to get into content creation I have to say thank you for this. I have started using this as a form of therapy being able to set my struggles aside for a bit each day to work on or do something I love and find challenging but in a good way has really helped me. I find a creative outlet can do wonders but it can also do harm and it is something to keep in mind for sure. I came to the conclusion early on that I can go on RUclips and find any sort of content I want to watch commentary free if I look hard enough. As a content creator you are not selling a game or what have you. You are selling yourself people come to you because they didn't want just a game they wanted to watch YOU play a game. I greatly appreciate seeing a video that can go into a bit of detail on this subject so once again thank you for this. My apologies for the rant lol.

That was awesome! I’m a streamer on Mixer and I just started! But I’ve been streaming on an app called meetme and I’ve been through fazes of friends who would be there and then would move on and maybe come back 1 or 2 years later to see me again. It hit me at first but more people would come and be there. It pulls suck to lose your OG favourites that visit you, but at the same time the new people are also there and help you get by, even when times get slow.
But toxic anything is a major drain to someone’s train a thought. That’s perfectly understandable
