  • This is the Kelty Late Start 1P tent - this shelter has a feature that supposedly makes setting up this tent super fast - 3 minutes fast.
The 2024 Late Start 1P tent is a moderately budget friendly shelter that is rather poorly designed and is Very Ugly!

Luke. I enjoy watching your testing and reporting on various tent brands and designs. After having tent camped for over 3 decades, l have arrived at the conclusion that tent camping generally sucks for a whole range of reasons. Crawling into and out of a tent on hands and knees sucks, not having head room to stand or even kneal sucks, zipping and unzipping sucks, sleeping on uneven or sloping ground really sucks, having to crawl out of a warm bag at night to unzip and crawl outside to pee really sucks, getting undressed or dressing while sitting down sucks, but crawling out of a dry tent onto a cold and wet dew or snow covered ground really really sucks. In my experience no matter what tent you have, for God sake put a TARP over the tent to create a large vestibule to protect the tent and stored items outside the tent. Plus you can stand up under a protected tarp roof and do whatever it is you have to do without getting rained on or sloshing around on wet or dew covered ground. Put a camp chair under there to sit on to put your boots or shoes on. Bottom line, ALWAYS put a good sized tarp over your tent for shade, ventilation, and all the other reasons, including not worrying about a leaking tent. Just thought I d share that

I’m not sure what happened to Kelty. They use to make great tents. I use a Kelty Salida 2 for winter backpacking and it is awesome. Kelty no longer offers the Salida 2 or anything remotely close to it.

even just in the last 10 years I've noticed a difference. Kelty used to be my tent maker of choice for family camping. once my last tent bit the dust 3 years ago i've not been able to replace with another kelty tent. I returned 3 of them. crap.

I have an older one.. 6’ 1” 265… it has worked great for 3-4 years.
I can put it up in about 2 mins.
It has never leaked and has held up nicely.
Lighter would be nice but then again my crew eats well when we hike so most of our weight is from food.
I’m not really picky about my sleep system.
I think I paid 120 when it was on sale.

I have had a Kelly Salida 4. It's my most dependable tent. Great in snow, rain, wind. No issues. Other tents I've owned like Naturehike 2 person have severely failed on me and caused near hypothermic situations in which I need to pack up at 3am in rain storm and move out because everything inside wet. For me Kelty is reliable quality, and Naturehike is a crap shoot. I know that over the years these knock-off companies have improved, but I still would rather trust reliable brands than take a risk to save a few bucks.

    • @Im_With_Stupid
      @Im_With_Stupid 5 дней назад

Naturehike generally makes quality products and they're a major brand in the Asian market where they offer a lot more products than they do in the western, but you are more likely to get a bad apple from them. If you spot it in the first 30 days you can get a replacement easy, but after that you're screwed because they ignore warranty claims. The reason they do that is because they don't offer replacement parts or repairs, so if a $2 pole for a $250 tent breaks 10 months after you bought it, giving you a brand new $250 tent is all they're able to do to honor their warranty. You can't even get a straight answer on what their warranty period actually is. In some places it says 1 year, others 2 years, others still it says 10 years. They just say whatever because at the end of the day it doesn't matter.

I have the Kelty Grand Mesa (4-person) tent. This one replaced one I had had for several years. These tents have held up magnificently in all sorts of storms and windy conditions. I truly hope Kelty keeps their quality good. I plan on using the tent for another several years and if the quality remains excellent I will definitely buy another from them.

I was thinking of purchasing this tent earlier this spring for use with my motorcycle. I went to a local sporting goods store and found a Kelty Ashcroft 2 which was very similar. I would call it a one person tent for sure. The ends do stake out on the Ashcroft and the ventilation is quite good. I slept in a fairly strong storm and a few drops of water came in through the vent and got on the screen but not inside the tent. There is no ground sheet and I used a cheap blue tarp tucked under. After 2 days I packed it up and there was some moisture under the sleep pad. All in all not a bad little tent. I am curious to see how your testing does and the sunglasses and furious glad hands did not bother me lol.

One of the few times I have owned something before you reviewed it. I look at the tie as a packaging tie. ?I guessed they were using left over material. I would not use the word "hideous" in describing the color scheme:) Honestly, I didn't see anything wrong with the color. I guess it depends on what you were expecting, or what the purpose was for the tent. I bought the tent for the cost factor, the amount of screening it has and the simplicity. I would have loved a two pound tent, but I didn't want to spend the money usually attached to backpacking tent. -You list other available tents. Problem for me, is I don't have experience with the brands and their quality. I was going to use it from a supported bike trip to car camping. And in a pinch a backpacking multi-night. It is small. It is a pain if it rained. I would bring lightweight covering to cover things I needed dry. -I didn't use the tent if the weather is going to be horrendous. I bought the tent because of the venting. It seemed fine. Did not use it during high humidity. I thought for the price point, the tent was fine. -And yes, your reviews, experiences and insights are excellent.

One of my all-time favorite tents is the Kelty Circuit 2. I’ve used that thing in week-long pouring rain and it never leaked. They stopped making it though. I love it so much I’d love to have a second one but they stopped making it. I don’t understand why they stopped making the perfect tent and started making this one.

As usual, this is a very good review. You are better off spending more money for a larger and lighter tent. As usual, you get what you pay for. I'd like to see you do a review of the Marmot Tungsten 1 or 2 UL tent. I'm thinking of using this tent on the PCT in 2026. I have a Marmot EOS1 tent but find it very small and narrow. However, it is super light (about 2lbs) and built like a tank. I've had it in some wicked storms and it never leaked and condensation was minimal. I think Marmot makes good gear but aren't as well known as some other companies.

Luke I looked at this tent via online and almost bought it. It was a good deal at the time for just over $82 new but had some concerns. then I came acrossed the Durston X-Mid 1 for $240 and fell in love with the fact it had two vestubles, half the weight, yes trekking poles weight something but it was already part of my kit. so adding it really didnt add to my current planned kit. and its was a pitch fly first setup so didnt have all the issues with if it was raining. would be interested in your opinion on this tent if you ever get to that point or every the x-mid 2 but not the pro version as its out of range for most ocassional campers

Kelty is pursuing the occasional user who doesn't want to spend much and is willing to carry a heavier tent. The floor doesn't have a heavy enough coating to be really waterproof. Functionally, it needs more perimeter fly pullouts to help with air circulation.

Can't say I'm too impressed, its very run of the mill. For the money, Alps Mountaineering and Naturehike are my current go to's for inexpensive tents. I have a two person Kelty tent I got super cheap. It’s been good waterproof wise but the mesh doesn’t come all the way down so when you lay down when it’s hot, there’s no airflow felt on your body, even with the fly off. Brutal in Oklahoma summers.

I gotta admit, looks like Kelty trashed this tent. I have an older one. A blue-gray on blue, decent color match. It also has tie-out loops on the short sides. I've used this for 5 years now with no issues and though I'm only 5' 7" and am stout it is quite comfortable. This tent is wide enough to handle my Klymit static V Luxe (30" pad). This was a great starter tent when there were no real, wider options for the weight/cost that are free standing. As for setup, yes, 2 min easy. The ground sheet clips to the tent (at least in the older version) and is deployed together. Roll out the tent. Throw the poles in, tack down the fly and you're done. This is a free-standing tent, so corner stakes are optional.

This would be a better 1 person tent for me. I'm 6ft 3in at 325 pounds broad shouldered and a bit of a breakfast belly. I car camp so weight doesn't matter but it is big enough for me and my dog and some gear. Condensation still looks to be an issue with this one too.

@@heem2k that is a great little tent. I own the Featherstone obsidian 1 person and the UL Granite 2P tents and they are really good for the price

I wonder if the 2-person tent would be big enough for a 1 person to be comfortable? Only $20 more.

I remember "back in the day" KELTY was one of the most trusted goto brands. I have also found over years the company's quality has gone down hill.

Kelty is very inconsistent with the fly to pull the fly away from the body. Some of other models have them for the 2 person and 3 person version, like the Discovery Trail.

One thing I want too say Luke ❤️. Sorry, for the Heart, it’s habit.
Right, I’ve seen you sorry Luke complaining
pegs. About the sharp aluminium pegs. You can get great plastic pegs and a peg puller. That hold far, far better than the Aluminium pegs I’m Sure if it was a good company? Would swop out the.
OMG1/4oz at least. No need for fingers bleeding and struggling???
Just get a Peg or Stake, what ever you want to call your pegs either side of the pond. But a stake or peg hook can’t be much weight? You can even use a peg already in your bag too pull pegs ( in the UK ) strakes in the USA. That’s no Big deal to me, cos you always have an extra peg or two.

Kelty like most other companies I'm sure farmed out their manufacturing to corrupt crummy Chinese companies. They used to be quality driven but seems like they burned that idea some time ago.

I have the late start 2 person tent. I have had it for maybe 10 years. It has kept me dry in all night torrential rain. This one looks like much lighter (aka thin) material. Very disappointing that they seem to have decided to make the tent with cheaper materials. Mine does have a small vestibule though. My 2 person weighs about 5.5 pounds, but it has a heavier, durable material (it looks more like a canvas type material). That tent does look disappointing.
