Vince Mares was the designer along with Phil Mesdag and myself with the MOJO UFO project. At the OR trade show we actually floated the tent with a balloon inside. Had alot of press as no one had done that before. When they came to market the tents were all purchased by Pros to my recollection and were gone within a month or so. We did produce a normal MOJO line of tents with NSL poles and 20d fabrics ( Non spectra fabric, non carbon poles ). The trail weight for 2p was 2 lbs 11oz which is still lightweight for a free standing tent these days. I believe Vince still has a prototype UFO that wasn't stitched but the seams are glued which shave off even more weight but never made it to production.
Luke!!!! You and I are big SD fans... I remember this tent, I wish they would bring it back!!!! Especially in today's UL market....They have always been ahead of the game in a lot of ways. The Clearwing 2 is STILL one of my fav tents.. ;)
Luke, I always enjoy your videos. I have one suggestion. Please give viewers some other products to compare with after you have reviewed an item. For example, if you reviewed something that is maybe "top of the line" then maybe give us some less expensive alternatives and/or similar top of line alternatives in case that item is out of stock. Your expertise can really help novice campers from purchasing something that's not what we need so comparisons really are beneficial. Campers & preppers tend to accumulate 3 or 3 of everything (sometimes 10 😅) which gets very costly. I know you don't have sponsors or an agenda but comparisons & recommendations for similar items would be very beneficial IMO. Thanks! Dan
I remember when you looked at this years ago. At a glance; translucent = too hot for summer, lots of mesh = too cold for winter. But you have used it for years and liked it. I will take your word for it. Thanks Luke
How often do you spend significant amounts of time in your tent in the middle of the day? I'm usually hiking during the time where direct sun heating up my tent would be an issue. DCF tents cool down fine in the evening when there is no longer high mid-day sun on them.
Awesome review, thank you. On the back of the tent that is not a guy line connection, it is where the fly gets connected to the tent pole to hold the fly off of the tent body. Hence the little ball on the other side of the loop. 🙂
Love the tent. My buddy I met at work goes backpacking a lot, and he has one himself. It's insane how light it is when its in your hands. Especially when comparing it my 1 person tent which is 1.7 lbs.
Neat looking tent. Just received my Durston X-Mid Pro 2 and my X-Mid 2 last week. Tried out the X-Mid 2 this weekend and loved it. Gonna go for a 37.5 mile hike this weekend in the Ouachita Mountains this weekend and try out the X-Mid Pro2.....these things are super light and should do me good. I retire from the VA in Nov 2024 and in the spring I am planning on thru hiking the Appalachian trail....gonna be a fun time!
This tent ended the gear war my friend and I were having (pretty much) when it came out. We were trying to one up each other with the lightest, coolest gear and this was the pinnacle. My friend talked about getting one so much I gave up and thought I was defeated. He never did, but it ended the war
What a lovely piece of kit still it is the memories that matter more :). I have a super light sierra designs tent that came from the same era, got it as a sample for $50 but syl nylon and also full of memories
Awesome tent! Still have a much heavier Moss Tent that handled 60 mile an hour gusts in Badlands really well, and downburst storms without leaking a drop. That peace of mind is priceless.
I like it. I’m in Australia and own a Sierra Designs one man tent that I used for 20 years until I retired it last year for a mid style tent as I was carrying trekking poles anyway. Interesting video. Thanks
Super Cool, I have never heard of it. I used to work in an outdoor store in the late 90's, Sierra Designs had this class workers in the industry could take, including a test. If you passed it, you were entered into the "8000 Meter Club", which gave you a Prodeal, a frisbee, t shirt, and some other swag. I still have the frisbee (shirt wore out long ago). I got a Alpha CD 4 season hybrid tent and 0 degree down bag with the Prodeal, think I paid less that $400 for both cobined, which was about 60% off.
Wow that’s seriously cool. As an ultralight backpacker this definitely made me drool a little bit haha. Really interesting design, seems like it’s almost too good to be true! (Except that price tag tho oooof lol)
Cool tent. Would be wonderful using that as a baseline model. And would be great to find today's tents that come closest to this as great compare video of lightweight tents that can standup to this tent. Or can they?
Love the tent, but I routinely setup camp and then go for a multi-hour day-hike exploration. I would worry the whole time that I'd come back to a missing [stolen] tent. Ugggg. But it's absolutely a nice piece of gear!
Interesting tent and one I haven't seen before. Impressively light and I don't doubt it can handle snow, but I wouldn't call it four season with the fly design and relatively few fly to pole connections. Wouldn't want to use this above tree line in high winds. Stil would want one even at that price.
He's only talking it up because he likes it and he's criticized far more winterworthy tents than this for not being usable in the winter. If he didn't like it he'd pick it to death and fault it for every little thing real or imagined.
Dang was hoping to get one for a good price but tent for me 300 max and I’m a hammock camper any more better sleep easier set for me and love having the best place to watch the night or river flow over me
It's pretty cool, but ZPacks has been putting out a new Lite line of a couple classic favorites, plus a new free standing 2P shelter. ( I don't think that they are 4 season, though) You've given good reviews of their Duplex, and lately I've been wondering if you've been checking into all of their new shelters.
The spider pole and the extensive use of netting is similar to the Litefighter series. I think the fly would have been better as side zipped entries to take advantage of the vestibule space. It wins in the weight category, but how small can it be packed?
that tent is amazing! at the same time I'm a sucker for "bang for the buck". These kinds of Equipment always seem so inefficient to me: Buy a Lanshan/Naturehike and spend the difference on the journey/travel itself. I dunno. But still: I live the idea of cutting edge gear, which this tent surely is!
$2400 for a tent, I think I'm buying a RBM hot tent. I carried a Sierra Designs on my AT thru-hike in 1998; it weighed about 5 pounds total. But brand new it only cost $180 and to this day is still 100% waterproof and reliable. Weight savings is nice, but there's a limit on your comfort as well that a pound or two extra could surely cure: it's a tradeoff.
Wow, what a tent! Pricey but bet the air flow in summer it's worth the price! Might not be very private though if changing clothes with a lantern on inside it?
Uncle Sam was nice enough to give me a free tour of North Dakota. ND has, hmm, lets count seasons; winter, August 15th. Thats it. Two seasons, teo season tent.
Price is OK for a safe & good sleep in any environment. A good shelter can save your life. If you add up a few bed & breakfast stays, you'd have spent as much or more over the years.
That restaurant in Damascus is a good place to get end-of-the-trail burgers and fries! Especially if the weather is nice and you can sit outside. Because the food smells amazing, but the hikers stink!!
never mind titanium, you can replace the aluminum stakes with carbon fiber stakes (I got mine from Dutchware Gear) you can save weight by ditching the storage bag. important note: DCF (Dyneema Composite Fabric) is not invincible no matter what the sales brochure says. it can be punctured by twigs and stakes and it can wear out from abrasion. Dutchware primarily focuses on camping hammock supplies, but there's a lot of crossover products, such as the carbon fiber tent stakes, tarps, and down quilts, and an entire section devoted to DIY, so if you wanted to make your own DCF tent, or bags, packs and pack covers, rain gear, or whatever, you can get it there and certain fabrics you can get printed. I bought a Silpoly tarp from them printed with my own camo design for example.
Very interesting to say the least. It’s a bit pricey for my taste and I would say most. What was the floor size? Looked a little small for 2 pads. I would take the trekking pole tent for price and size and they do lake lighter poles then using trekking poles.
It was a real deal set up in its day, but frankly, for 1/3 the price you can get the same or better, performance. As light? Within ounces. This tent was the Uber tent.

I have a Sierra Designs tent that has served me well for 45 years!
Love the tent. My buddy I met at work goes backpacking a lot, and he has one himself. It's insane how light it is when its in your hands. Especially when comparing it my 1 person tent which is 1.7 lbs.
Even for the price, still would absolutely be a bucketlist piece of gear! Loved seeing it through the years
Neat looking tent.

Love Sierra Designs. Been a fan of their tents for 20+ years.
One of, if not, the best unique backpack related videos I've seen. Thank you for the original content !
Well...having a warm, dry, restful night's sleep is priceless.
I have always been amazed how it can be pouring buckets outside but I'm perfectly warm and dry inside the tent.
This tent ended the gear war my friend and I were having (pretty much) when it came out. We were trying to one up each other with the lightest, coolest gear and this was the pinnacle. My friend talked about getting one so much I gave up and thought I was defeated. He never did, but it ended the war

I own a SD Tensegrity and I love it so much.
Awesome tent! Still have a much heavier Moss Tent that handled 60 mile an hour gusts in Badlands really well, and downburst storms without leaking a drop. That peace of mind is priceless.
Exactly
Your tent looks very practical but the cost is a killer! Thank you for sharing.
I'll take 2. I wish I had that back when I was constantly going on backpacking trips.
Miss your stories and I miss you and susie and your road trips
Amazing tent whoever designed it was a an ahead of his time
Luke your just an awesome guy……thank you so much in sharing your life journey. Bless you
Nothing like a tent that pleases in every way! Love it!
Hope they could resume this. And I would buy one for sure.
What is so compelling about this tent that you would be so willing to spend over $2,000?
I like it. I’m in Australia and own a Sierra Designs one man tent that I used for 20 years until I retired it last year for a mid style tent as I was carrying trekking poles anyway. Interesting video. Thanks
I like the tent. Seeing all that mesh was excitung, plus the weight.
With those quality materials it should last a long time!:-)
Still running my Sierra design geo from 1981.
The market for this tent is still there. Would be sweet to see this tent come back
Luke thanks for the information again on canvas tents!
I like the tent..
Great tent! Ahead of it's time for sure.
Awesome tent... Thank you Luke 😊
This tent is awesome thanking you for beautiful videos/contents blessings and love 🙏🙏💖💖
Elsa wild tint that’s a wild tent Luke and a very expensive tent to I’m glad you got it and it’s awesome town tent
Great tent
Wild tent!!! Looks cool, definitely not for star gazers sleeping in after a late night staying up, with those translucent materials.
crazy light.. crazy expensive!! i want!!😉👌
Have a great Sunday Luke
I love the airflow ❤😊
That’s super cool
I like that tent. I’d buy it and use it! BTW hoping and praying that your chemo treatments are successful and you beat cancer.
Super Cool, I have never heard of it. I used to work in an outdoor store in the late 90's, Sierra Designs had this class workers in the industry could take, including a test. If I was still into backpacking I would love to own that tent, yes I would pay that price. Being almost 70 sleeping on the ground those days are over.
I'm 73 and I sleep on the floor in my own apartment. I'm perfectly content.
It's a good looking tent ⛺️
Luke really made an entire video to flex his super rare amazing tent on us!! I'm jelly
I understand why they only made 50. Very niche market. Thanks for showing us an interesting tent.
Wonderful tent for 2/3 of the year, I'll bet it's too cold for winter, there'd be a howling gale in a wind.
Wow that’s seriously cool. As an ultralight backpacker this definitely made me drool a little bit haha. Really interesting design, seems like it’s almost too good to be true! (Except that price tag tho oooof lol)
That looks like it's well over a thousand dollars just by looking at it. A rare art piece indeed.
It's a cool design.
That same design is currently sold as the Naturehike Cloud Wing 10D 2-person for $120 on Amazon
I have the Naturehike version and it has held up extremely well in all kinds of weather.
Really can't fault it.
at probably 3 times the weight
@@hyperboreanforeskin it's not terrible at 1.3kg ish. 🙂
@@danieltulk9311 definitely not terrible. not knocking it, just for people who are obsessed with UL gear, it might as well be a cinder block lol
@@hyperboreanforeskin hahahahah! That's fair!
Looks good.
Very cool 👍
Great .
That tent would be a blessing for someone who trekks. Sorry to hear that it's not made anymore
Sounds awesome but pricey but still a great investment in a great tent, :)
Looks still pretty new.
Pros: Free standing, steep walls
Cons: Connecting the poles looks a little bit tricky, front entry
I want this!
It's on my list of wants.
For anyone interested: The tarptent double rainbow li is this tent but better and you can buy it for much cheaper right now.
Cool tent. Would be wonderful using that as a baseline model. And would be great to find today's tents that come closest to this as great compare video of lightweight tents that can standup to this tent. Or can they?

AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEE !!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, that tent is ly impressive, very expensive, but wow again. And a 4 season, ouffff! Not in my bucket of price, but a very nice tent.
thank you for a great video
Very cool
That Mofo is pretty sweet. 😁
I love it! When can I expect mine in the mail? 😊
damn definitely would have loved to get my hands on that tent back then with how light it is
Yes please
Definitely different

Is it a 3 or 4 seasons? Several websites say it's only a 3.
Dang was hoping to get one for a good price but tent for me 300 max and I’m a hammock camper any more better sleep easier set for me and love having the best place to watch the night or river flow over me
Walmart has a new higher end 1 person backpacking tent. I just bought it but I'd like to see a video on it. Nobody has reviewed it yet
Hope it will be on AliExpress soon
Do a review of the Coleman 1900 3-in-1 grill!
Interesting 🤔
It's pretty cool, but ZPacks has been putting out a new Lite line of a couple classic favorites, plus a new free standing 2P shelter. ( I don't think that they are 4 season, though)
You've given good reviews of their Duplex, and lately I've been wondering if you've been checking into all of their new shelters.
DCF, double wall, fly-first, semi-freestanding. A true unicorn especially for its time. Sierra has really been run into the ground by Exxel
The spider pole and the extensive use of netting is similar to the Litefighter series. I think the fly would have been better as side zipped entries to take advantage of the vestibule space. It wins in the weight category, but how small can it be packed?

You lucky bastard!
Send it to me. I need to make sure it’s safe for you to use
MOFO UFO IS THE GOAT. Wish someone would redo this design
Wow
It's really neat. But even with seeing both of you sleeping in it. It still looks kinda small/narrow for two people.

I like it. Would be great in a desert camp. Or in the forest. . Don't think I would like it in the winter to well.
Wow, what a tent! Pricey but bet the air flow in summer it's worth the price! Might not be very private though if changing clothes with a lantern on inside it?
Nice Tent
Naturehike makes a tent with the same design called the Cloud Wing 2. Probably a knock off of this design. Cool to see the original.
Sure, same design but lower quality materials to the extent of 3.3 lbs, double the weight.
@@absnobs5382 Material weight =/= material quality
So that's where Naturehike got the "inspiration" for their Cloud Wing 2... Interesting.
Considering twelwe years of service, it's a worthy investment 😮
Uncle Sam was nice enough to give me a free tour of North Dakota. ND has, hmm, lets count seasons; winter, August 15th. Thats it. Two seasons, teo season tent.

Luke, it’s not been called cuben fiber for years.
DCF → Dyneema Composite Fabric.
