I will say, I camp on the beach a lot, like directly on the sand, those high walls could be really nice to keep sand out. My swag and tents that all have 3-4 inch bath tubs always end up having sand blow in, even through the mesh. Something like this would be nice to keep from waking up under a layer of sand.
150d oxford, waterproof rating of 2000+ Both the denier and hydrostatic head are mentioned on their website! Dual-direction zippers (no brand name is mentioned). Currently on sale for $109.95 USD
The only reason I would tolerate the cramped dimensions of that tent is if it was light. By light, I mean < 3 pounds. For that weight, I can have a 2-person tent. Luke is right about the poor ventilation but I would buy a tent I could use in cool weather like that. In summer, I have a 100% mesh tent I use under a tarp. The Free Soldier’s tiny size is the deal breaker for me. I’m 5’ 9”, but I like to have my gear in my tent. Maybe they’ll read this and make a two-person tent.
This tent looks nearly identical to the Hyke and Byke Zion 1P. The spider-style poles, the little vent-support with velcro, the top cross-beam construction. The differences I noticed were that the Hyke and Byke is a standard bathtub-style, and is all mesh above 4-5 inches, and the rain fly ends have tie-outs.
Great video Luke! Totally understand the issue with the tall tent walls not letting in cooler night breezes. For that reason I am looking for a new summer camping tent and came across the Featherstone Granite 2P tent. Looked like it might be up your alley as a potential future review product as it piqued my interest but I wanted more info from folks who aren't being paid for their review. Thanks again!
Luke, always coming with the knowledge. Because he has the experience! I was thinking the same thing when you talked about who designed this tent. They just didn't have the knowledge 😅
I always appericate you putting the size numbers in and then adding your experience. For example you reccomended 5’11 and under. At 6’2 that tells me I need to look at a different tent. Thanks for these reviews.
For something like that tent and when you do not use it in the warmer months, you should probably say ‘do not use it in the warmer months no matter which country you live in…. A tent like that would probably be perfect in the colder countries and other places that don’t get the temperatures that we do here.
I just finally got one a couple weeks ago. Taking it on its maiden voyage tonight. Got it off a soldier still brand new for 100$. And it's the one with the carbon ghost bones poles in ocp pattern. I have been looking every single week for one and had a couple people flake on me over the past 2 years trying to get one.
kind of a few things going for it Quality construction thick materials. It comes in camo. Possibly a cool weather hunting tent, That you don't have to pack Too far, And there's no wind.😂
I hate to be the one, but I went to the website and looked at the tech spec. They do list the deneer and the waterproofness of the material there, so not sure why you said they didn't. I also looked over all their info on this tent and didn't see where they specifically called it a 3 season tent. They just mentioned it's performance in harsh weather.
I checked a fair while ago myself when I first saw it for sale they didn't list the deneer and waterproofing then so they must have just updated it so I would say if Luke's had it for a while then that could justify what he was saying
I need to point out that this dude said in his last video: "it's really hot today" and then goes on to say it is 72degF. We need to take that as a reference. "Hot" to me is 29 Palms at 1500hrs. It ain't 72Deg. So, I think this is why he wants an 100% mesh tent.
It was 113 here in Austin last week. And that was actual temperature not index. Temp on my dash of my truck said 126 when I got off work at 5 lol. And I was working outside for the past few weeks.
That is a goodlooking tent. I like the color. The issue I have with it is that it is very small. I get that it is lightweight. But for us big boys out here, we need a little more room than that. I wanna bring my pack and stuff inside.
I think it's more about correct advertising. If the tent were correctly labeled as 3+ season tent and a recommened temperature/weather to use it with. No one gonna complain.
There is one thing this tent has over the Lightfighter !. The straps for attaching the fly are like the ICS, and will never disconnect. I've had my Lightfighter fly come loose twice in high gusting winds. Yes I had it pitched really tight. Once the nylon soaks up moisture and sags, you would need to retension , a pita in a storm. A surplus Lghtfighter is a much better option.

Have you ever heard of Wise Owl Outfitters? They're on the east coast and make hammocks. I'm using them for a college class project and curious on how they actually are
They're cheap, rebranded OEM generics. That's how they are. They don't make anything, only buy factory OEMs, have their logo printed on it, and then have it shipped directly to an Amazon affiliated warehouse without ever having laid eyes on it. Companies that do this may have 100 different brands and sell everything from outdoor gear to cookware to bathroom plumbing fixtures. It's all cheap crap.
I knew of this tent, also they have tarps of which I have a tarp.but almost 5lbs 1 person 😂… my ul3 spur is 3lbs 14 oz and for me that’s heave af … this thing is stupidly heavy… but if it’s built like the tarp it will be water proof.
In regards to lack of 3 season+ style tents. Does a fan help enough to recommend? I see you don't review or seem to camp with fans. I however do (Florida), and it helps me get to sleep earlier in the night before the heat really starts to go away around midnight. For not much space in my bag I can get several extra hours of sleep. I know there's a lot of fans on the market, just a roundup video might be good. Measure windspeed, noise, and battery life, that's all that matters.
Great content and great review. You are very thorough. Please turn down the ambient noises. We don’t need to hear every pop and click during your videos. Other than that keep up the great work. Thank you.
I actually have a free solider tarp so was surprised seeing the name on the package at the beginning of the video. Kinda sad that it's not a true 3-season tent.
This is par for the course with FS regarding size, I have one of their hammocks with attached bug net and it’s like being in a coffin and I only ever used it once. I think the designs must be by an ex military man who loves being in confined conditions, it’s definitely not for me. The quality of the hammock was very good just like this tent and it’s designed to be used on the ground with a tarp too so aside from size it’s a decent idea.
I am laughing so hard. When I hear you say low '80s is hot. I'm in South Central Virginia and last week it was around 100 most of it and if it wasn't there it was in the mid-90s. The low '80s is paradise compared to that
Ya, I have the litefighter one-man tent. Best military tent ever? I wouldn't go that far. It's a nice tent but could use a few more stakes and it is a bit short on length. I'm 6'5" and its just too small lengthwise. I don't use it anymore because a taller person isn't able to sleep on their back without poking out of each end.
I think the fabric is for privacy. So why not make a tent that's mostly mesh, except for the waterproof pan, of course? But make the exposed mesh in white, not black. White reflects the light and makes it more difficult to see through while getting the benefits of a full mesh tent.
I was a US Army Soldier for 29 years and 10 months. Went in as an E-3 and retired as an 0-5. I have that Lite Fighter. My impression of it is that it’s way too heavy for what it is. It’s a tiny cramped shelter with room for one man and little to no gear. For that weight and money, I could have a two-man tent. Also, Multicam is an okay camo pattern for a uniform, but doesn’t work so well for a tent. It’s hard to explain why. The black in patterns like US Woodland and German Flecktarn actually fools the eye and creates the illusion that there isn’t a huge dome there. That’s the best I can explain it. Tents don’t allow the kind of situational awareness I needed as a frontline infantryman, but as a REMF at the TOC a tent is wonderful. I used to bring a tent with me when barracks were provided. Testing for waterproof? Ever heard of a hose or sprinkler? Hint? Not everyone sleeps at the same temps. YOU need more mesh, myself? I sleep cooler, less mesh is fine. It also depends WHERE you camp, I send lots of time near the ocean, nearly always cool. Second camping spot at 8800 ft, last night 52 degrees. Hint? 72 degrees isn't hot.
I don't get the idea of a tactical tent. As a former infantryman we mever had tents. You slept on the ground and only unpacked stuff you can put back in like a minute. If you want a tent, get a tent. If you want a "soldier" type shelter string up a poncho between two trees pr just sleep in a bivy.
Marketing. If somebody made black toilet paper and called it tactical it would fly off the shelves by the thousands of rolls daily. Add a carbon fiber tube and clowns would fight over it like a Tickle Me Elmo doll.
Ok, hypothetical. Money not coming in to consideration. You only have 1 backpack, 1 tarp and 1, no, lets make it 2 tents. 1 3 season, 1 4 season. What would your current choice be?
I know luke doesn't do best of videos but it is very annoying to have to surf the material with many hours of content to look into. As long as it's waterproof, for $109, that's not terrible.
You should design your own tent and market it.
