Having passengers do it would be problematic as they'd have to bring out one of those stair modules - you can't just hop out the door on a jet like that, you'd likely break a leg or something falling that far to the pavement.

Respect for the pilots for not risking a tight turn that could cause even more trouble and/or damage. At such an important position being able to say "no" firmly yet calmly is an essential skill.
Thought the same thing. Even after the first "no", they then got back with "they're advising that there's plenty of room", and the pilot stood their ground. Some minutes later when the vehicle got there they confirmed the pilot's perception of no room for a right turn.
@@mateusbmedeiros I always tell pilots I marshalled that if they feel uncomfortable and need a wing checked to stop and make me check it, it's way better to waste twenty seconds of my time than to take the nose off another airplane of get stuck in the dirt.

Happens roughly once or twice a year at most major airports from talking to my ATC friends. Kind of like the pilots doing their pre-flight cabin introduction over ground radio.

They certainly know the aircraft's they're rated for better than the controller does. Plus those things are expensive. You clip a wing, you might lose your job, and I'm sure they'd all like to stay employed.

Got to do that on a NWA DC9 once. Icy morning in AZO and the tug couldn't get traction on the ramp. Powered pushback and were good to go.

Working Ops at CVG last year I can tell you this controller is awesome and was always a great time to chat with but, even the best of us make mistakes.
Good to hear that this guy has a good reputation. Hope this won't hurt his career too much; if this is the worst mistake he makes all year, he'll be doing well in my book.

I too was wondering about that. I wonder if he actually hit the RT or if he thought about it and said "this is ATC's problem, not mine" and pretended to hit them.
For those of us with little to no knowledge about aviation can you explain the potential damage that could be caused by reversing?
@@catguy00 Thrust reverse redirects the normal thrust forward instead of rearward, but that's not the issue. The engine is still sucking in tons of air from in front of the plane, and everything on the ground in front of the plane, into the engine. Reverse thrust is used on landing on a "clean" runway to help slow the airplane (in addition to brakes and lift-spoiling devices), but using reverse thrust is discontinued at (typically) 60 knots--about the time the airplane is ready to exit the runway onto a taxiway. TL;DR--using enough reverse thrust to move a loaded airplane backwards on a taxiway is a needlessly dumb thing to do--especially when your need for doing so isn't your fault, or your reasons for doing so is to be "super helpful."

@@catguy00 to oversimplify Adams answer: The thrust of the engine is quite powerful and can kick up rocks and stuff. When using reversers those rocks and stuff are being pushed forward passed the engine intake where it can be sucked into the engine

The Delta plane, depending on the model, might be able to get a tug underneath the plane, or around it without impacting the wings. It’s mainline.

And once again, despite the screw up and back and forth, I am blown away by the calmness and proffesionalism of pilots and controllers. The rest of the working world could take a lot of good notes from the aviation industry.
On a side note, could have saved a lot of time if they sent a wing walker WITH the tug.
Once in a while, we all mess up. Fairly quick resolution. Shit happens. Life goes on.

I'm surprised that the controller asked them about thrust reversers. As I understand it, many jets and airlines have policies/procedures that preclude them from using reversers below a certain speed (e.g. anything other than slowing down after landing) due to the risks of debris getting sucked into the engines.

If you ask the question then you find out if it’s an option or not.
The controller doesn't care the only people who get in trouble would be the pilots but yea They aren't allowed to use the reversers
I'm just watching videos, but I did see a vortex coming into an engine from the pavement once - debris looks very possible.
I was going to mention that as well. Definitely not a great idea to use reverse thrust for slow speed maneuvering. It is especially an issue for wing mounted engines. I am assuming Envoy was a 175.

Yes, and if there's any way to get internal phone conversations from Ryanair too... (Irish people sound funny anyway, but imagine the language they're using in those phone conversations when they heard what happened! I naturally mean when they heard that they had to waste all that extra fuel...)

Ten hours later......Seriously, controller knew he did wrong but still held it together to try and get this fixed. We're all human and make mistakes. I know that I could never be an ATC. I think ATC was judged to be the most stressful job.

This could have been prevented if the engines had the ability to rotate 90 degrees and allow for a vertical take off.
Fun facts about Greater Cincinnati International Airport:
1) It’s not even in Ohio, let alone Cincinnati. It’s initialism CVG comes from Covington, Kentucky, which is approximately five miles east-northeast of the airport. If named today, it’s abbreviation would like be based off of the city of Hebron - possibly HEB, although that sign is taken by a regional airport in Burma.
2) It is run by the Kenton County Airport Board, even though the airport lies entirely with Boone County (does border Kenton County)
3) CVG is DHL’s largest cargo hub globally.
4) Canadian folk singer Stan Rogers died in a cabin fire incident which required his plane land at CVG. Though the majority of passengers died, some passengers and all crew survived.
5) Every time I fly through CVG it takes no more than thirty minutes from the time I walk through the door until my butt is in my seat by my gate. Incredibly smooth operation.
Good thing the little plane's pilot was confident enough to tell the tower that he was not comfortable moving w/o people on the ground despite ATCs reassurance that everything is clear, when in reality the guy on the ground confirmed there is no space.
And that boys and girls, is how Little Johnny in the tower got the nickname "Wrong Way".
Maybe "Head-On" would be a good nickname, too. Dunno.
The guy who parks next to me on the ramp is ex USAF and has his call sign "Wrong Way" on his 172 hah.
One night years ago at JFK my captain stopped the taxi, and I asked why. He said “If we go past this intersection then we’ll be trapped by that A340.” Then I realized that he was a real man of genius.
You can tell the controller felt bad and realised he messed up. I'm glad the pilots didn't give him a hard time.

-You gonna ask whats is this. This is a something gamers called "Meme". It was on anime called "JoJo Blizzare advantures season 3." The first one plane reference guy was "Dio" and "other plane" guy is named "Jotaro" . This is a reference from that anime.
Even making the suggestion of doing a power-back with no marshallers watching is pretty crazy. Pilots should've said "hell no" to that.

Well - a mistake that was handled in a professional manor. No cursing or D1ck swinging just pilots who took care of business. I like it.
Plot twist: Envoy 4078's pilot snatched a parking spot from in front of the controller's nose that morning. This was payback.
Just noticed at 2:58 CVG GND says "any way shape or form" but the caption says "any ways you perform." First time noticing a slight error for you, which is impressive as often as you wind up posting! Much respect VASA. 🤘🏻

Unfortunately not nearly as busy as it once was, and it is a nice airport. There is an abandoned concourse with over 90 gates sitting in the middle of the field that used to hub all the Comair flights. We have picked up some business in recent years, and freight is doing well, but the Delta/NW merger took CVG from 3 concourses down to one not completely filled.

Back in the '90's, Northwest's (now part of Delta) standard pushback from the gate in Memphis was thrust reversers. I think I also saw them do that in Minneapolis as well, but I'm not sure.
I think the policy is stop your pushback until the other plane departs
Delta used to do powered pushbacks from the gate when they were flying the MD88s. The plane has tail-mounted engines so they were higher off the ground and used eyelid-style reversers which seem to reverse almost all of the thrust from the engines. Even then, I think they only did this when they were parked at the end gates which have more space around them.
"Well boys, it was a good run here at the tower. See you when I see you. Bye"

S*** happens everybody handled it pretty well that's what we're supposed to do when we are adults.
I've seen this happen at KFWA. It had been raining a lot so to get a tug around the aircraft they had to run out and purchase sheets of plywood to lay down in the grass off the taxiway so the tug could drive around the aircraft, total time to undo the nose to nose situation 6 hours. The cargo company awarded the two controllers a golden towbar award which the rest of controllers to thoroughly harass the two offenders.
You missed the golden opportunity to insert a Spongebob "ten... minutes... laterrrr" slide in there!
Now i know why they make ATC towers so high - so when this happens controller can simply open the window and jump to end up is misery.
Thats embarrassing, the poor fella will hear a long time about it. 😁
