  • Replaced the valve stem seals for this high-mileage engine and it no longer consumes oil and runs much quieter. It's not a simple job. Even with the proper tools, it was a very long day that needed plenty of patience. Thanks for watching.

    Was looking for a video like this on the 47 a few years ago when my 01 GC started smoking more and more. I thought you had to pull the cams and gears and lock top of chain and hope you put it back together right. I've since swapped a 03 GC 47 HO in my jeep but 3 months later something !! Lol not as bad but sucks after doing all that work and kinda back at square one now with a 03 drivetrain. Your video showed me what I needed to know and special tools like the keeper thing. I've always just seen folks use a little magnetic but that tools way better ! Would have like to seen a POV on at least one cylinder but still this video helped a lot. Thanks

      Thanks for watching. I'm not a mechanic and while I have replaced stem seals on engines before, I honestly had never done work on a Dodge and wasn't sure what I was doing...lol. It's difficult to stay focused on a new task and remember to get good shots/angles/video of the process. This Durango is still driven daily and to my surprise, it's quiet and doesn't burn oil. I have used different methods to get the keepers removed... but this is the first time I used the actual tool and it was such a time saver. I recommend to buy/rent/borrow the keeper removal tool and you will not regret that choice. Good luck with your repair.

    Hi have you work on a 2003 dodge caravan before ? I’m trying to replace the valve stem seals on my caravan . The loaner valve spring compressor from autozone it doesn’t compress enough the get the keepers out. It tried another type of compressor it’s an L shape piece of metal and it didn’t work either. I thought maybe you’ve done dodge caravan before and you can suggest which valve spring compressor that will work for a 2003 caravan.

      I don't do this type of work on a regular basis. There are different types/styles of spring compressors and you may need more than on type of compressor in order to get your job done. With the engine in place and accessories in place, access is tricky and takes some strength and creativity to make this job happen.

    Hi new sub here, what kind of valve spring compressor you are using for this vehicle on the video . Are you using 2 or 3 diff valve spring compressor? I’m trying to replace the seals on my 2003 dodge caravan I tried autozones valve spring compressor but it doesn’t compress enough to get the keepers out. I tried another compressor tool it’s like a L shape flat metal but you need a lot of strength to use it ( doesn’t have enough leverage) have you change the valve stem seals on a 2003 dodge caravan before?

      Hi, one type was used, but we did use a "cheater" bar to gain more leverage and at one point it got quite frustrating to get the right angles and leverage.

    Do you always have to remove the rocker arm in order to remove the springs? I saw a kind of valve spring compressor that has a hook on it, it has to hook on something in order to work . But since I remove the rocker arm there’s nothing I can hook it on.

      You can't remove the spring with the rocker arm in place. The hook that would be used for this type of rocker assembly set-up would hook to the pivoting rod that goes down the middle.

      This is not my car so I can't accurately answer...but I know it was eating oil.

    Did you guys end up leaving the belt on the engine and turning it by hand with the belt wrapped around all the pulleys

    • @yourbeekeeper
      @yourbeekeeper  Год назад

      Yes, we didn't remove the belt and with the spark plugs out, the engine spun over by hand fairly easy.

    Porn style size! LOL that was awesome. I like the 4.7’s, not a bad motor. Have a 5.7 in my Jeep and keeping it until it dies, since they no longer are making the Hemi’s.

      It runs great now and doesn't eat any more oil...hopefully will get many more miles from this engine.
