Every 3-4 months I come back to this video for the recipe and do my towels or our bedding. Thank you for the awesome video that’s helped me more then any other video on RUclips.
Bottom line ▬ Leave your washer lid open between washes. The washer bin cannot dry if the lid is closed. The washer bin and things you can't readily see will grow mold and/or mildew if the lid is closed. If you have a top-loader, leave the washer lid open in-between washes. That is what causes "stinky towels". If you have a front-loader, leave the washer lid open in-between washes (I don't buy front-loaders for this very reason). The same principle goes for the dishwasher. The lid should always be left open slightly or you will grow mold and/or mildew in the dishwasher. The same principle goes for the bathroom. If the door is always closed (and there is no window to allow moisture to dry) the moisture will mold and/or mildew. We use all white towels only. We use "free and clear" detergent (no dyes, no fragrance). We use Chlorine Bleach (disinfecting chlorine bleach - they sell two kinds) for white loads (towels and other whites). We use a cup of ammonia for all other loads. Since our washer lid stays open in between loads there is never any moisture lingering around to mold and/or mildew. You have to leave your washer lid open to keep things dry in-between loads, period.
I have never used fabric softener in any of my laundry. I have been doing laundry for 60 years, learned this from mother. Just pour white vinegar into the fabric softener in the washing machine all the time. Try it.
I actually tried this with my bra and I was so disgusted. I’m addicted to stripping now lol and for those that say it’s the dye, I tried it on whites and I had murky water. I tried it on cloth diapers, water was not murky due to the diapers not being bad at all so it’s not the chemicals!
I saw someone on the fluff love Facebook page talking about doing this and I'm so happy you did a video on it. I was thinking "she must cloth diaper because that's the same solution!" And there are the covers above your washer and dryer haha. Definitely going to try this out. my towels just are getting bad with absorbing and the smell.
Use napisan, it cleans the laundry and gets rid of bacteria at the same time. It’s cheap and very effective, leaves the laundry smelling fresh and clean . Also it helps the washer stay fresh too.
I have found that using a laundry sanitizer works very well for all my bath linens. In New Zealand we have Canesten, it's antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal. It is a rinse, but I add it with my laundry soap in the wash cycle, and run the longest cycle with 60°C water, no fabric conditioner at all. My towels have never smelled better, and the feshness lasts. I don't know exactly how long it would last for, because I always wash my towels after 2-3 uses anyway. I also use the laundry sanitizer for my clothes and bed linens as well, it amplifies the freshness and scent of my fabric conditioner😊 But I'm going to do this on my cleaning cloths and tea towels, because I wash them together, and the cloths are used for more disgusting jobs, and always smell bad once they're damp.
Hard water minerals don’t deposit on fabrics. Hard water minerals like magnesium, calcium, manganese, copper, and iron react with soaps and detergents, forming scum. That’s what’s deposited and what traps dirt and bacteria. Washing soda, borax, and the Calgon product are all alkaline water softeners. What’s the point of using three different water softeners? Borax is an old fashioned, not very effective alkaline water softener. It’s 47% water and 10% as soluble as washing soda. Your bath tub soaking illustrated two of the four factors that affect cleaning performance: time, temperature, agitation, and concentration of cleaning agents. Just use Tide and add washing soda if water is extra hard. You won’t have this problem. It’s formulated to rinse cleanly, unlike DIY recipes.
That’s because washer machines don’t really wash things that great.. good old hand power works best.. put your towel in the sink keep washing and rinsing the towel until the water stays perfectly. Clear . It’ll take you a while. Then use a little bit of Pine-Sol do the same thing rinse repeat .. your towels will be perfect
enjoyed video my towels stinks i accidently left im washer for a day wet !! and its horrible should i just throw them out ? will give your video tips a try , also what is a good laundry detegent u use ? now that its four years later u must have new things that works ,do u like wool balls for dryer ?
Yes I was wondering about wool dryer balls instead of fabric softer. Am getting ready to try the eco friendly laundry sheets and ordering wool balls too. Trying to eliminate the plastic waste.
No need to strip just use the hottest wash cycle, powder detergent and always the extra rinse, the dirt build up comes from poor rinsing, top loader washer are particularly bad at rinsing with only one deep rinse and slow spin. Front loaders are more efficient at removing rinse water due to high spin speeds
What a bummer non of them are in my country. Borax is illegal inn my country because of the chemical. The power the closes thing I have is baking powder.
The "nasty & murky" water left in the tub was due to the dye in the towels. If you had used clean white towels, the wash water would not be that colour.
Im sorry but given the state of the planet and how much water is used and ruined through detergents, how is changing your towels daily a good advice? Even in hotels you can hang your towels so they are not changed… so changing towels daily is not a real solution.

on trend long before it went viral! love it!
Thank you. This is my second year using your recommended method 🎉

Haha yes I love cloth diapering! Thanks for watching!

Good Video. I have used RLR on diapers as well as work out clothes that had yellow arm pit stains.
I've used rlr on my diapers too! I'll have to keep that in mind for the pit stains! Thanks!
This is the best video! So informative this is what I was looking for. All the other videos just say add vinegar.

What are some good laundry detergent brands you recommend?
No need to strip just use the hottest wash cycle, powder detergent and always the extra rinse, the dirt build up comes from poor rinsing, top loader washer are particularly bad at rinsing with only one deep rinse and slow spin. Front loaders are more efficient at removing rinse water due to high spin speeds
Do you need to re-wash (post-strip) with detergent after rinsing the clothing in the washing machine?
No, just do a water rinse.
How do I remove the detergent ?
Is Mrs Meyers a better alternative?
Avoid laundry pods with fabric softener
My husband has sensitive skin and we use liquid All free and clear can I use that for this or does it have to be powder?
Did you try it with liquid laundry detergent? I would if I were you👍
Fantastic information!!! Great video......keep em coming!
Thank you so much!
@@TheJoyfulMom ilove you..Egypt
Wait how long did you soak? Hopefully 4 hrs at min
She mentioned 7 hours in the video.
Thank you ..from Egypt
that dark color is actually DYE BLEED from the items being washed
What a bummer non of them are in my country. Borax is illegal inn my country because of the chemical. The power the closes thing I have is baking powder.
Thanks
Borax kills that smell.
Does it have to be Tide? My kids are allergic to it. 😕
You should be able to use whatever detergent works for you.
Very helpful. Thank You!
Thanks!
Yeah your not supposed to be using fabric softener on towels to begin with... they aren’t as absorbing
I got allergic reaction from one detergent
And switched to tide free and clear
But still feel itchy ?
Help
My daughter uses All because husband can use other detergent
Very helpful video! xo Melissa
Thanks!
You MUST a good detergent into the mix!
There's no verb in your statement.
@@iluvthekjv1611 - Yes, thank you. The word USE was left off.
Is this okay for cloth diapers?
Yes!
The "nasty & murky" water left in the tub was due to the dye in the towels. If you had used clean white towels, the wash water would not be that colour.
No...
Dude I just did this on a bunch of dingy white T-shirts and the water was so filthy and the shirts are bright and actually feel new again now.....
Im sorry but given the state of the planet and how much water is used and ruined through detergents, how is changing your towels daily a good advice? Even in hotels you can hang your towels so they are not changed… so changing towels daily is not a real solution.
I love you.
What in the WORLD does this have to do with you getting "married"?! Just curious...
you're an idiot.
"so that it can release the minerals and bacteria in there" you know what is exactly what a washing machine removes...
Don't use fabric softener; that's the biggest problem. I wash my bath towel every few weeks. None of my things stink. Sounds like a personal problem.
Too lengthy time consuming
No one is forcing you to do this. Some individuals prefer their towels and laundry to smell fresh.
Do you have to use the Calgon if you already have soft water?
