This was very informative, Denise! I love the tip about using less detergent and that all of these tips fit in with my natural living. Mildewed towels are the worst! I use vinegar as my fabric softener. I also add a little lemon essential oil to the detergent. It helps brighten the laundry and adds a mild, fresh scent. I’ve tried wool dryer balls and didn’t like them. I found they actually caused static in my laundry. I’m anxious to hear how you like yours. I’ve wondered if maybe it was the particular dryers balls. I agree Denise, I don't use fabric softener anymore, and I use the wool dryer balls. I put a few drops of lavender on the wool balls and run them in an empty dryer for 15 minutes and then proceed to dry the laundry. Tfs!

In guessing you run in empty dryer first to "cure" them., so it won't leave oil residue on fabric? ( I've heard of this step being important so I wanted to ask you since you seem to have experience with that......

Hi Sandy, I only use vinegar in the fabric softener cycle now for my towels. They just feel better and are more absorbent, try it and let me know what you think.

Hazel Thomas Baking soda makes perfect sense. That’s one of the reasons I like Arm and Hammer. The laundry comes out so fresh.

I have never tried vinegar for mouldy clothes or towels but I have used a tiny bit of bleach and has worked although I can understand if not everyone is keen on using it on their fabrics.

Thank tou Denise I’ll be using the vinegar tip for my towels, the stink comes back when I use them 😩 I usually use vinegar along with my detergent but I’ll try stripping them before when I do my next load.
Some of my towels are just plain old, but I’m going to try these tips when I’m at the laundromat. I’ll make sure to wash the towels separately, follow all the tips, and not use dryer sheets. I can’t wait to see how it works!

Coffee With My Sunshine You are so welcome. The big thing to make them fluffy like hotels is after you launder as I suggested, don’t over dry and get them out of the dryer immediately. Then, give them a shake or a little snap to fluff up the fibers. Then fold and put away. This should prove helpful. Oh...and the dryer balls or tennis balls too, will help.

Foodamentary: Adventures in Food This is funny but I have actually taken a flashlight to look into the washer to assess water level. If you’ve got a deep fill setting, you might even try that.

Yes, running the towels in a dryer makes them 'fluffy' from my experience because the fibers are stimulated as they dry, rather then being allowed to dry flat against the fabric so it ends up feeling like cardboard. However, this can be harsh on the fibers so perhaps using a hair-dryer might be a better option; although not something I've tried.

TYSM, I’m going to try washing my towels like you. I use vinegar as the softener but I normally wash in warm or hot water and a small amount of bleach. Never knew about washing the towels with just vinegar first then a normal wash with detergent, also washing them on the bulky cycle. Great tips!! 🥰
Hey @Jax Girl, keep in mind that this process is to be used to help strip the residue of detergent and softener out of the towels. Once you've done that, your daily or weekly washing process will be to use less detergent, use vinegar in the fabric softener bin, and dry them as needed but not too long. I don't want you to think you've got to do double washes every time!

Excellent video, Denise. This is the first time I have seen you here.
I like the appearance of your well-organized laundry lab. I'm writing with a suggestion for you to consider. I see that you have a bin labeled "paper towels." There is a way to *STOP* using paper towels! If you have old and stained dish towels in your kitchen, use them instead of paper towels. I keep a drawer full of them in my kitchen. Then, when an old dish towel is used, I just put it aside until the next time I do a load of laundry.
An old dish towel or two will not take up much space in a load of laundry. And you can avoid buying paper towels altogether!
Using old towels is a good idea. I'm trying not to buy as many. Thanks for your suggestion.
I would love your ideas when to retire towels, sheets, ect. Can they be too old?
If your linens are starting to show signs of wear, thinning, shredding, holes, its time for them to be donated to the animal shelter. They always need old towels. If they are so hard they scratch your skin, get rid of them. This is what I did and it worked well for my family. I bought six sets of towels for the hubby and six sets for me and six sets for company (towel and wash cloth is a set). That's eighteen sets with a few extra washcloths. All my old ones, I donated. Since I do laundry every week I didn't need too many and eighteen sets is more than enough for a family of four.

I’ve been using distilled water vinegar and wool dryer balls for about a month now. Here are my thoughts. The vinegar does a great job getting odors out. The wool balls seem to do well with static, although I live in Florida so static really isn’t a problem. As far as softness, no way. My clothes and towels are so rough and scratchy feeling now. I think I’m going to go back to softer. I’ll use less of it and maybe alternate with the vinegar, but I really do miss my soft laundry.
try using 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda on top of the towels when you put them in the washer, before washing.

Love the video, teaching myself necessary skills as a college student. However, the nature of being a poor college student, the amount of money I spend using the washer adds up over time. Would it be fine to add the vinegar with the detergent in just one load? Also, is there any point to use a steamer on my towels? All the best
Hi Andrew, oh...I totally get it. You can just add the vinegar in the rinse cycle in the place of fabric softener and that should do the trick. In this video, I'm telling how to rid some of the build up first and then addressing the stiffness. Just start using vinegar in the rinse cycle instead of softener and you should see the difference.

Hi Denise years ago an older woman told me ammonia softens the towels but I cannot remember if she put it in the wash or rinse😆
Jaye Johnson Well, Jaye, Ill check that out. I’ve got some lemon scented ammonia, my guess it’s in the wash cycle but let me verify this. Thanks for the question.
the British use sudsing ammonia for washing their wools...they never "dry clean"...sudsing ammonia will take the chemicals of detergents out of the fibers....like Dawn removes the "build up" of shampoos..... follow directions....probably no more then a 1/2 C. Borax also works well to clean out chemical build up in all laundry.....the things our grand mothers used before all the money scents took over the market.
as far as washing wool...best to use your regular shampoo and conditioner...wool is just hair....just lay it flat to air dry...the heat from the dryer will shrink the item...and it goes without saying...cold to warmish water, never hot.

Thanks and you are one beautiful woman! One additional benefit of vinegar is it great for your plumbing drains and will remove odors from your washing machine while descaling it.
Now I like that added benefit. I hadn't put any thought into the descaling but I will be sure to mention it from here on out.
Great video! I do use vinegar to get rid of smells in my laundry and that works great. My problem is my sheets and towels get a stale smell after a while in linen closet. Any suggestions? Thanks so much.
Can put a little dish or pouch of baking soda with some essential oil. Or sometimes I put a bar of soap in the corner it leaves a nice smell.
Love the bar of soap idea. I use a dryer sheet. Just place it in the drawer or cabinet with your clothing to keep them smelling fresh.

Hi. Sorry, I'm a little bit confused. Are you saying to do 2 washes? The first with vinegar and then the second with detergent, and then vinegar in the rinse cycle. Or is this all meant to be done in one wash? Sorry for sounding daft
Hello! You don't sound daft at all. It can be a bit confusing. Yes, you are going to do two washes. I know it sounds like overkill but to truly get the stink out, two washes are necessary and sometimes three. But first, run it through on a wash cycle with just the vinegar. NO detergent. Put the vinegar in the wash in place of detergent. Then when that cycle finishes up, washed, rinsed, spin cycle, done...start the wash again only this time, use detergent as you normally would but put vinegar in the fabric softener bin. Then put them in the dryer and no dryer sheets for softener. That should take care of the stink and get your towels soft and fluffy! Let me know how you do.
So wash first with detergent then wash again but with white vinegar? Would just plain white vinegar with no mention of "distilled"on label do?Pls reply

@@homemakingwithdenise I honestly noticed little difference between the vinegar and the regular wash. Which means it worked better than I would have thought vinegar would have. Was also surprised that it didn't leave a smell behind.
Upside is that it helps put less bleach into my septic tank.
Downside is that running the wash twice per set of towels is not great when you live on a well system in a drought.

Now how do I get them bright white, because bleach doesn't do it or Oxyclean. Once the heat from the dryer heat the towels they turn yellow from the laundering with bleach.

What if we don’t use a dryer? I hang everything and they dry inside the house, then i iron. How should i treat my towels then?
You can do the same thing for the towels once you've stripped the reside from them. On a weekly basis when you wash them, I'd try adding baking soda to the wash water. That should help with the softening. Give them a good snap when you hang them close to the fire or where ever you put them. That will disrupt the fibers and fluff them up a bit.
Hello, I have 2 questions. Why do you recommend cool water instead of hot. And, if I have older towels, that have been crunchy for awhile, is there any hope of getting them soft again. We followed your instructions one time, and they don't feel much better. Thanks.

If you mean the large rack behind me I think we got that at Lowes. Smaller drying racks I’ve found on Amazon and have some in my Amazon store.

Add baking soda to the wash water to help the detergent work better unless your water is fairly soft.
