I think that lots of us forget that things get clean when the detergent gets washed AWAY taking the grease and dirt with it, not when the detergent goes into the wash. If there's too much soap neither the dirt or the detergent gets rinsed properly. My old housemate had a problem with smelly washing, we upped his wash temperature and reduced how much soap he was adding by more than half and it fixed the problem over a few washes. It's counter intuitive that less soap can get a better result, but it's definitely true. I always use half the manufacturer's recommended dose as a starting point and sometimes even less than half works great! 💜

That vinegar trick is legit! I've been doing it for years, and it removes the buildup of laundry products (and who knows what else...eww) and that makes them super soft and much more absorbent. I use the vinegar about once a month or two, depending on how many times I've needed to run the towels through the laundry in that time. I know it's time for the vinegar when a newly-washed towel feels like it isn't absorbing like it should be.

    • @dianebay6879

    • @painwarriorprincess5120

@@dianebay6879 Very true. I also add baking soda to the wash cycle which helps deodorize and softens fabric some too, and I don't use liquid fabric softener and I go easy on the dryer sheets (I usually use half of one unless it's a really big load of laundry) to avoid that issue.

I agree, the cleaning microfiber towels make me feel like I have the driest hands ever. I don’t know how to describe it other then microfiber snags my skin on my hands when I pick it up. Then when I wash them, every bit of human and pet hair stick on to the towel as well as lint from the wash. When I pull out my “clean” microfiber towel from the dryer, it is caked in hair and lint. Makes a great lint magnet though for other loads. I guess I am supposed to hang dry microfiber towels but who has the space for that?

Just run them through the wash before you use them when you get them back from the seamstress so they don’t shed when you clean.

Thanks for the post. My favorite towels are pretty thin, tightly woven Turkish cotton bath towels. When I lived in Istanbul, Turkey where I would go to the Turkish hamam every week with Turkish girlfriends we would go every Saturday or Sunday for basically a full spa experience, there were always these tall stacks of towels in all different pastel colors basically the towels were bath towel size, with tassels hanging off of each end and a thin white stripe running across in lines all up and down each towel. So I got loads of those towels when I live in Turkey they, with my large fluffy white Turkish cotton monogrammed hooded bath robe are my favorite things for a Turkish hamam like spa experience every day in my home in Washington, DC. I do the laundry for my boyfriend and I and I usually do a light load of wash and a dark load of wash every week, sometimes more if we have overflowing laundry hampers!

However, dry your genitalia with a face or hand sized towel and discard it to to laundry after each use. Lessens the risk of a urinary tract infection. I use 100% linen towels in natural color, both plain and in waffle weave that I ordered through Etsy from suppliers in Europe. It only took a couple weeks to receive them and they are wonderful! Naturally anti-microbial, dry super fast, absorbent, and get softer over time. Plus they are durable; mine look as new as they did when I purchased them 5 years ago. If I have to put in the dryer rather than the clothesline because of weather they are dry in 5 -10 minutes. Waffle weave linen takes about 20 minutes to dry.
Also have linen bedsheets and would never go back to cotton or flannel. Linen keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
Since linen is made from flaxseed, it has so many benefits for our skin, especially sensitive skin.

I generally wash my bath towels after 1-2 uses as I get back acne pretty easily & I find having a new towel each time helps cut down on it. They go in the hamper & then all the towels get washed on Sundays when the rest of the laundry gets done. We are a 2 adult & 2 dog household so there isn’t as much laundry as someone with kids but in mud season it means a LOT of towels get washed.

I have a sister in law who, every time we went to her house (once every one or two years) had at least 2 baskets of towels dumped on her sofa she was "in the process of" folding and putting them away. Didn't matter if it was back when her two kids were still at home or now that they have gone and it is she and her husband alone. Drove me crazy that each in her family needed a clean towel, or two of them.... EVERY day for their shower! Our family had their OWN bath sheet, or when the kids were younger, a printed beach towel and that was the only towel that was washed for each person.... once a week!
It stands to reason that if you wash properly with shampoo and soap when you get out of the shower, your body is CLEAN and only needs to be dried off and the towel hung up to dry.
It saved our family of 5, a couple baskets of laundry to do each week.
And yes, I have left laundry in the dryer a day or so, depending on what we are doing, but I don't dump clean laundry on the sofa for all to see... and it's still there when I KNOW company is expected any moment.
-- Same goes for those with a dishwasher... in my humble opinion.... that if you have a dishwasher and the dishes inside are CLEAN, you don't leave them in and take out this or that item you need at the moment, and don't take them ALL out, so that dishes begin to pile up in your sink... because nobody likes to unload the dishwasher "completely". So there are dirty dishes piled up in the sink/counter.... and just a handful of clean dishes in the dishwasher. I have seen more than one person do that, and I am baffled as to why?
I made a trip from our ranch, into town for a few hour babysitting job for my son and his wife several years ago, and their house was always filthy anyway. So I grabbed the opportunity when they were both on the schedule to work... so I could clean their kitchen and living room! LOL I washed 3 loads of clothes that I found all over the living room and kids' rooms & bathroom, ( I didn't touch their bedroom), and I washed and washed piled up dishes all over their house and dried them and put them away. I vacuumed, swept and mopped and took out 3 giant leaf sacks of garbage that was piled up around the trashcan, along with 4 dozen eggs. (I brought my own heavy contractor bags in with me!)
When they got home, my son laughed and said to his wife.... "I told you mom would clean"! But then he asked why I DID the dishes and put them away... as they HAD a dishwasher? I replied that I realized this, but since they had clean ones in it, that they didn't bother to unload so they could actually put the dirty ones piling up in the sink back into the dishwasher... I knew they wouldn't put them away anyway so I may as well hand wash them and get them put away.
** That was the day I discovered the 4 dozen fresh eggs I had sent home with them OVER a month earlier... for my daughter in laws folks, were STILL sitting on their kitchen counter in the same sack I'd sent them in, among piled up dishes and other trash! I could smell a stench in their house... which was normal unfortunately, but I discovered it WAS the rotten eggs they never bothered to pass on several weeks earlier and had never put in the fridge! No, my son was NOT raised that way!
It is astounding how some people are willing to live. They are now divorced... but his new wife and house are just about as bad.

I have a family of 3 and it’s all girls (me and my 2 daughters). We switch out towels 3 times a week each and when that time of the month comes around it is daily. So, depending on the week I wash 3 to 4 times a week if not daily a load of towels. We each have a set of 6 towels which is a bath sheet, bath towel, 2 hand towels and 4 washcloths per set. By 3 times a week I mean a load for each of us. We each have our own color for towels so, the girls have to run their own clothes and towels as well as other laundry so, our washer runs continually on a daily basis because we have assigned days for laundry and we get it done. Whomever is home on Saturday during the day gets the bed sheets and pillowcases through along with cleaning all the bathrooms, another gets the kitchen and dining room and then the other gets the living room, laundry room cleaning and all the bedrooms are done by each of us and the guest bedroom by myself on one of my evenings I am home and not working.

Just one small correction. Bacteria growth causes any smells on towels etc. Occurs on both natural and unnatural fabric. Microfibre DOES also harbour bacteria.
UV light in sunlight is very effective & free way to kill off bacteria. Overuse of dryers creates a burden on electricity consumption.
If you are concerned about the Environment consider only Organic Cotton to reduce water waste in traditional cotton growing. Avoid artificial fabrics that will add microfibers into waterways which find their way into the food chain. Artificial products also cause a large amount of pollution in manufacture, because they are derived from petrochemicals.
I really love these videos though, keep up the good work!

Micro plastics are such an issue. It's so prevalent now that they estimate the avg person consumes about a credit cards worth of plastic a week 😱!! We should all stick to natural fibers and care for them for the duration of the towel. Also there are filters you can put on your washing machine to filter out the larger pieces of plastic that come off of the microfibers, but of course it doesn't get the smallest particles.

When towels get stiff and don't absorb anymore it is because they are holding old soap from the body among other debris..... skin cells and fabric softener... here is a challenge for you... take those clean towels from the cupboard and fill the washer with hotter water add couple of cups white vinegar and about half cup washing soda...borax works too...... let soak for 10 to 15 mins then continue.... if you remember add about half cup white vinegar to rinse cycle ... dry in dryer or hang to dry ..windy day is great! ... now all the old dirt is gone towels are bright fresh and absorb again!! ( after the first heavy duty wash I use warm water)
if you only use washing soda and vinegar after that to wash your towels they will always be odor free and absorbent, soft too. after the first wash just use half to one cup vinegar depending on load size and half cup vinegar in rinse. I also always use vinegar in rinse of all other clothes... removes all soap and deodorizes clothes... I never use dryer sheets or softener in my laundry,
never smells of vinegar..... I have been doing this for 50 years... back when we washed diapers it was a godsend.... hope this makes sense and helps someone along the way...vinegar is an amazing product for so many things.... inexpensive too!

Gonna order yours right now, if they're anywhere as fantastic as your mop, I'll restock both my personal and guest towels with your line. Fingers crossed!

Great tips. Any suggestions to clean bathing suits to minimize chlorine impact. We swim 3-4 times a week

Where did you pour the vinegar? Into where the detergent goes? Or into the bleach receptacle? And I have a fabric softener holder. You’re just a wonderful teacher. I have learned so much from you.

I add it where the fabric softener goes in my front loader.

@@donnastratton8397 thank you. Do I add my detergent too like normal and then use the vinegar for the fabric softener? This ole dog is trying to learn a new trick! Thank you!

I'm change bath towels once a week, however I use a clean washcloth every day, and clean hand towel every 3-4 days.

Isn't microfibre bad for the environment? I am trying hard to do the right thing but we get so many mixed messages.

      Thought microfiber was plastic

Yes, Microfiber is a form of plastic made from oil byproducts (and other chemicals?) They do release tiny tiny particles (micro particles) of plastic into the water system every time you wash them. Fleece is also plastic and just as bad if not worse. Please do not use them. Cotton or linen are the way to go for towels; just don't buy the super thick ones or you get the problem with needing to run the dryer extra long to dry them. Our daughter is studying plastics in the ocean for her PHD.

Microfiber is horrible! Stick to cotton.
