    I have ADHD, and I also have an issue with how ADHD has become “popular” or something. On the one hand, I don’t want to gatekeep because many women, like myself, self diagnose later in life before getting an official diagnosis since ADHD is mostly understood from male presentation. Awareness and reducing stigma is positive. Misinformation isn’t. It feels invalidating that TikToks like this portray ADHD like some wacky little silly willy quirk, when in reality it can majorly interfere with success and life satisfaction

      I’m gonna be honest, idc who says they think they have it or don’t, I feel like I can always tell. Like us who actually have adhd have a good radar and can easily tell who’s actually one of us, lol

    • @DLusby

      I have to agree that misinformation is a problem.
      That stereotype of a 'male presentation' is also a problem for us males who don't fit it. It completely invalidates our experiences. However, the many stories of women being misdiagnosed or not receiving a diagnosis because of a bias is just sad. I think once I started to suspect that I might have ADHD (prior to my diagnosis), I faced less 'resistance' than I might have if I were a woman.
      But yes, that wacky quirky happy-go-lucky feel in some videos can be... I don't know. It was far more serious for me.

    I have ADHD and social anxiety, and this new ADHD "trend" is making me feel embarrassed when I mention I have adhd, like i don't want people to think i am one of those self diagnosed (based on 2 tiktoks they saw) people. Also, not related to adhd tiktok but i am a student and i hate taking my medication when i study in public, i always worry other students are judging me and thinking i abuse it for better performance, or worry they'll come to me and ask if i can give them some (which has happened before). I may be undiagnosed adhd. I base this partly on the fact that I was diagnosed "hyperactive" in grade school: early to mid 80s. I'm pretty sure other people in my family are also, but only one is sure. Most of my family refuse diagnoses and treatment. My father made sure I didn't get more meds for that diagnoses.

    • @coralovesnature
      @coralovesnature Год назад +2

      I’m sorry that your family is not open to diagnosis/ treatment. But I relate, I also believe I may be undiagnosed ADHD, as well as my dad and both of my sisters. My dad and one of my sisters are pretty much classic, textbook definition of ADHD. Myself and my other sister have symptoms in more elusive and nefarious ways, but it’s still present nonetheless. I think we are all open to the possibility, but none of us have sought out medical care. My mom is in denial about it. I think growing up in the 60’s, she subconsciously thinks that people with a neurological difference must be extremely different to a typical person, to the point where they struggle to function in society at all, but that’s absolutely not the case for every person with a neurological difference. In fact, I’d say most can probably pass as “normal, functioning adults” at least some of the time.

None of these people want to talk about the "unglamorous" or "unrelateable" aspects of ADHD and I have watched in real time how this makes the people around me start to barely even see ADHD as a real disorder. ADHD has derailed my whole life so many times in so many ways. People with ADHD have DOUBLE the risk of accidental risk or suicide as do people without ADHD, and everyone I tell that stat to is completely shocked because the public consciousness of ADHD has become "oh haha that minor quirky tiktok disorder that barely even counts as a real problem".

  • @coralovesnature
    @coralovesnature Год назад +12

    I am not diagnosed with ADHD, but I have strong reasons to believe I have it. As one example, I really related to Corry’s description in the recent Sci Guys episode about ADHD medication about how he has to sit in the shower for hours before he can move on and finish getting ready. For me, it’s that I cannot get out of bed in the morning. And when I say that, I don’t mean that I’m groggy/ not a morning person/ tired from not sleeping enough. I will be laying in bed, fully wide awake, staring at the ceiling, contemplating the meaning of life. In my brain, I want to get up so, so bad, but I simply cannot. I will literally wake up hours before I’m supposed to be at work, but stay in bed staring at the ceiling until the absolute last minute I possibly can until I have to hurriedly get ready in like 15 min to be to work on time. It’s like I need the time crunch in order to work up the ability to move my body out of the bed at all. I need the stress to function normally. My boss has repeatedly told me (in as nice a way as possible) that I need to work on getting to work in a more timely manner. I like my boss and my job and I really want to be able to do so, but no matter how much I want to or how hard I try I physically cannot get my body to do it. This is just one example of many problems I have that lead me to believe I have ADHD. Conversely, I do not really relate to some of the things that are common on the generic lists of “5 ADHD symptoms”. For example, I do not compulsively spend money/ never have and am also not that impulsive in general, and I am also usually not hyperactive in physical expression. However, in my brain, I am EXTREMELY hyperactive, almost 100% of the time, I just very rarely act out on it physically.
    I really appreciate the way that Corry and Noah talk about ADHD. It allows me to understand much more thoroughly what I’m likely dealing with than the type of TikToks or generic content similar to what Corry criticizes in this video.

      @@nataliep4349 thanks for sharing, glad to hear you are getting the help you need! Obviously I can’t say for sure since I’m not diagnosed, but I think it’s unlikely I have depression as I don’t really have any of the other symptoms of it, I could possibly have anxiety though. I also have other ADHD symptoms I didn’t mention in my original comment, such as very bad time management/ executive dysfunction, chronic procrastination, genuinely forgetting to do little things even though I just confirmed that I would do them, getting bored of doing normal work if I don’t have another stimulus present (like listening to podcasts or music), hyper fixation on something when I’m “in the zone”, etc.
      Unfortunately, the medical system in the US (where I live) sucks stinky poo poo butt, so it’s very discouraging to try to seek out help. 😕

    • @nataliep4349
      @nataliep4349 Год назад

      @@coralovesnature yup, I had every one of those symptoms too. I think one of the key things is the executive dysfunction like you mentioned, which is associated with several different disorders. It seems like it really doesn’t get talked about much outside of ADHD for whatever reason.
      It’s definitely hard to get ADHD assessments nowadays since it became so “trendy” online. Waitlists are really long, and they limit which medical/mental health professionals are allowed to diagnose it since so many people lie about their symptoms just to get a prescription for stimulants.
      I also had a few vitamin/mineral deficiencies that contributed to symptoms, so that may be one thing you could look into as well.

    • @coralovesnature
      @coralovesnature Год назад

      @@nataliep4349 hmm, good point about the medication too. I don’t really want to go on medication if I don’t have to either, so part of the reason I am hesitant is also that I don’t want to get diagnosed, then immediately shoved onto drugs that may not even make me “better”. I would rather make diet or lifestyle changes or try cognitive behavioral therapy. For me personally, medication would be like the last option after I’ve tried everything else and nothing worked.

    About 4 months ago I tried to get a diagnosis for adhd.
    I’ve always been very self reliant so people often don’t notice that I struggle. Then some months ago a school councillor?? (Dunno what her job is) suggested that I might have adhd. It was the first time any adult ever recognised the possibility.
    Throughout several years a lot of different friends (who are neurodivergent hmm I sure wonder why all my friends are neurodivergent and/or mentally ill) aHem anyways they told me to seek a diagnosis.
    Ofc my main reason for trying to get one is because I think it could help me not because someone suggested it. But now because of the school councillor I had a “valid excuse” so that made it feel less intimidating.
    It wasn’t exactly fun to contact my doctor and then try to get through the health care system. When I finally got to have a meeting when we were done they told me to contact them again if I don’t have friends (I know why that’s a thing but still just what??) and start failing at school.
    So fun fact! I kinda am failing at school. I feel like the psychiatrist didn’t ask the right things. For example she said nothing about doing big assignments last minute and I was so nervous I completely forgot. I have access to the journal that was written about me and honestly it’s sad to see how much she misunderstood what I was saying.
    Idk I think I might try again when I’m feeling more up to it. Since i think would really help me personally but also being able to get extra help with school but honestly most importantly just people acknowledging it, and receiving some kind of understanding.
    Good luck to anyone out there in the same situation as me :) it’s not great but I wanna believe we can do it!!

      that's what's bugging me about it. Like I was searching up videos about people explaining what everday life with adhd is like or how hey came to get their diagnosis (I wanted to make sure I really understand what this entire stuff means because it was entirely new to me and I didn't want to waste anyone's time) and now my entire youtube and instagram is flooded with adhd related shorts which is basically tiktok. But I think I managed to differenciate the entertainment stuff from the shorts that actually convey some true facts. So I sometimes sit there and say: Oh well, let's watch something really relatable but I will not make it about: If I have one of these I have adhd. Anyway diagnosis day is in August and then I'll finally know it too, but I also fear they will put me down because my algorithm crashed from "nerdy with apparently lots of youtubers having adhd" (I only realized that afterwards) to "every single detail you need to know about adhd" over night. Though I really appreciate having stumbled upon HealthyGamer GG (psychiatrist who spends his fridays explaining about mental disorders and making it understandable for folks who didn't study psychology, very interesting studies there).

It’s not “I lose my keys sometimes” it’s “I’m frequently late to appointments, school or work because I misplaced my keys and it took me a long time to find them” (usually in an obvious place, I once lost my car key for two weeks - thankfully I had a spare - and when I found it it was on top of my washing machine in plain sight. I had looked past it for TWO WEEKS)
    2. These symptoms have to present in childhood, if these struggles are something recent and you’re an adult, it’s not ADHD. ADHD is a developmental disorder that occurs during the years that you are developing, you can get diagnosed late and even in adulthood (at 15 my dx was late) but there are a lot of symptoms that have the caveat of being present *before the age of 12*.
    3. They include things that are not unique to ADHD and don’t clarify that there are several other diagnoses that overlap, such as bipolar. This can lead to someone who does relate getting diagnosed with something else - like bipolar - that isn’t as “glamorized” so to speak or even heavily stigmatized and can lead to distress in that person because they were convinced they had something that feels less bad to them.

      I think the reason it is so 'glamourized' is due to people really struggeling and being so happy that it was never supposed to be easy. Like even if I don't have it I would be so glad if it was true for my boyfriend because he basically struggles in every area of life that demands academic performances and social obligations and it really takes a toll on his self-esteem and motivation and all that stuff. While I was relatively normal in school (regarding my achievements) I am now definitely crashing in university where all structure and organization and all of that suddenly became chaos (which is apparently not that uncommon with late diagnosed girls and I also am not able to depend on my mother's support anymore, I think that made the whole school process very doable for me because she gave a lot of structure and emotional support). Since I started university later than my boyfriend I am not as damaged as him yet but I can see myself at the exact same mental state in 2 years and I don't want to be there. So what I'm trying to say: They're probably not trying to convince everybody about adhd being quirky, but more to say that you shouldn't be ashamed to seek help if you struggle with that because maybe your struggles are meant to be because your brain is wired differently and not because you're stupid. And they are trying to shift the mindset of adhd people from self-hatred to self-acceptance. BUT it is probably highly misunderstood by the rest of the world. I can also be wrong with that obviously.

    I don’t have ADHD and I daydream hundreds of times a day. Sometimes it can last hours ! And I do forget where my phone is when I am on the phone with someone. And sometimes I just click on « buy » when I don’t need another plushy or another game !
    All those are just normal human things. It’s very confusing for a person who doesn’t have ADHD to understand how that works with all the TikToks about it. It seems a little too relatable imo. Sometimes I can relate to them, but I am just hypersensitive, or I had depression, or I have anxiety (and I fidget a lot sometimes).
    It can be misleading and though I do feel like it’s good that we talk about mental health more, I think we should talk about it better, with more knowledge and professionalism.

    I also think that like if you arent diagnosed - especially if you’re not that educated - you should at the very least be required to disclose that you’re self-diagnosed and ideally not use the label. and if you are in a position where you are able to get one and choose not to then i think you forfeit your right to speak about these kinds of issues in the context of whatever disorder you think you have

Luckily (but to me it is unbearable) I only have 3 weeks left until my first appointment, so hopefully I won't have to tipsy around this topic that much longer XD

    I was diagnosed with adhd at 10 years ago were it was still debated if it was even a disability or just a myth and decipline problem. ADHD TikTok’s are terrible, yes I can relate to 50% of their content and they spread awareness but they also spread annoyance about it and cause people to self diagnose themself. It’s treated like a trend when it is actually something that’s negatively impacts one’s life, hence disability. The treatment of adhd on social media is ignorant to people who actually have it…

    i mean if people just understood how causal links worked then this shit wouldn’t be an issue lmao. as a neurodivergent person i appreciate these tiktoks bc i like how relatable they are and hearing about these weirdly specific experiences that it turns out i have in common with other people in the community. i agree sometimes the wording is very misleading but i don’t think it’s a fair alternative to say these creators have a responsibility to keep people from self diagnosing. even if they didn’t make it about “signs you’re undiagnosed” any kind of relatable neurodivergent content IS going
    to lead to a lot of people self diagnosing bc it requires drawing an association and people are generally bad at distinguishing a sufficient condition from a necessary one. at the end of the day what’s the material harm of people self diagnosing? if they tell their boss/friends/family they have it all that’ll happen is they’ll be taken less seriously just like people who actually have ADHD are. and a doctor is not just going to hand out stimulants without neuro testing so…. idk is a handful of neurotypicals being somewhat confused Worse than neurodivergent people lowering our voices in public once again?

    • @AccordingToWillow

      also i get what you’re saying about ADHD being misrepresented but ppl with ADHD have literally never not been stigmatized and had our struggles minimized. if people see these tiktoks and choose to interpret them in a way that makes
      it seem like we’re just exaggerating the difficulty of everyday life, it’s not coming from the tiktok. it’s a reflection of the attitudes of the society the tiktok was made in. some of these tales are problematic but at least it gives people like you something to bounce it off of and i would rather we all be sick of it than nobody talk about it at all. i’ve met and worked for so many people who don’t even know what it is and the fact is we can’t start correcting the misconceptions you’re talking about until it’s in the conversation.

    Two books that are really great resources for people who either have ADHD or think they have it are ADHD 2.0 and Delivered from Distraction by Edward M. Hallowell MD. They are available in audiobook and print. The books are a little outdated in some ways but the overall content and advice was very helpful for me. He talks about the positive aspects of ADHD that aren't always focused on. When getting diagnosed and treated for ADHD, the focus was mainly on the negative aspects of it that were disruptive or unproductive. This led to me feeling like having ADHD was a bad thing and I had to suppress myself all the time to be accepted. Both of these books talk about that experience being common for people with ADHD and how to reframe your thinking about your disorder. ADHD makes me really good at certain things and can be a net positive a lot of the time.

    Perhaps controversial opinion, but the "it's valid to self-diagnose mental disorders/illnesses" discourse has gone too far. Like, on one hand I get that therapy and such is insanely expensive and not everyone has access to it, and it helps to find a label that fits you (because you know yourself and how you feel) so you have a sense of community around whatever is different about you. But. On the other hand, I have seen young people on TikTok doing those "5 signs you have X" things where they try to assert absolutely absurd falsehoods. Like, stuff like, "OMG, guys, did you know that wanting to talk to your friends about your day means you have codependency issues?" or "Did you know that craving salty foods means you're 500% more likely to be a serial killer?" And because it's on TikTok the young people believe it without, like, looking at the DSM or common signs or symptoms of anything because TikTok has somehow replaced common sense (thanks, tech illiteracy!). My sister came to me crying a few years ago because she'd watched a TikTok that explained the "signs" of a schizophrenic, and it essentially boiled down to "you have feelings and express them, but sometimes you have feelings and hide them," and she, being 12, thought the 20 year old in the clip was an expert because Older People Know Stuff. There's a reason people go to school for certain careers, and psychology/psychiatry type stuff is one of those where it matters. No one is helped by idiots playing armchair psychologist. No one is helped by people online apparently just making shit up about various disorders to get views. No one is helped by telling kids they're psychotic if they sometimes daydream. If you think you have a serious mental health issue, please do your best to go see someone. I know it can be scary and I know it's expensive, but it's worth it if you can do it. Signed, a person who has way too many diagnosed mental health issues.
