  • S&S Worldwide is taking over Kennywood next year with their largest attraction ever, Steel Curtain! Not only will it have more inversions than any other in America, but it also will house the highest inversion in the world, at 197 feet! The ride looks absolutely nuts, so we're here to break it down so you can know what to expect when it opens!

    For those criticizing the name and/or theme, Kennywood doesn’t care. Kennywood is a very regional park, and for most people in that region, the name Steel Curtain conjures anything but wimpy images. Bravo to Kennywood for actually connecting with the local area better than most any other amusement park out there.

    • @eriks_coasters
      @eriks_coasters 6 лет назад +21

      I should clarify- if you are criticizing the name/theme and you do not live in Western PA, Kennywood does not care. If you're a coaster enthusiast from elsewhere, you're gonna go ride it regardless of theme because it's big and unique, and if you're a member of the GP from the area, the theme is likely to really connect.

    Steel Curtain is the nickname for the defense they had back when they won back to back Super Bowls. Anyone with a clue about football will get it. Pittsburgh is a Steel town, hell one of the biggest Steel mills is across the river from kennywood. I think it looks awesome and though the theming may not be everyone’s cup of tea I’m glad to see a coaster not named after a bird.

      YoungGunner89 The name only raises images of shower curtains for those who didn’t grow up knowing the phrases Iron Curtain and Steel Curtain. For older (or culturally/historically aware) Americans, it makes perfect sense and is fitting for a coaster themed to the Steelers.

      I'm from Pittsburgh and think this is a bad idea. Kennywood has visitors from all around. Why would we want to make people from Cleveland or Baltimore feel unwelcome? Hell, even some of us from the area get sick of the Steelers.

    • @alexinalexandria
      @alexinalexandria 6 лет назад +5

      Being from Baltimore and a Ravens fan I have mixed feelings on this. Personally I don’t care and would ride this in a heartbeat. However Baltimore, Cleveland, and Cincinnati are close-by cities (and host the other three AFC North teams). As a whole Baltimore does take football season more seriously than a majority of other cities. (I would not include Pittsburgh in that list.)
      There is a potential to lose some business from these cities by alienating their fans. However, in the short run, people from all over will flock here to ride this for the same reason people are flocking to Cedar Point this year.
      The other big card: reliability. Hopefully this monster is a reliable people eater and not a dormant volcano.

    I feel like this coaster has a better chance of opening on time with less issues than Gale Force and Merlin's Mayhem. Gale Force ended up getting its issues fixed and Merlin's Mayhem's issues had more to due with construction delays on the station and theming. I definitely think Steel Curtain would sound silly to non-football fans, but I like the thoughtful local theme. I always love it when parks take pride in their geography.

    • @JPav91
      @JPav91 6 лет назад +1

      The original leaked blueprints for a coaster had one placed behind the Jackrabbit and Racer in the ravine behind the park. The problem is, this project was cancelled. I heard two different reasons why. One was that the EPA blocked the construction because it was a habitat for a protected snail species. The second and more realistic reason was that the terrain in the ravine was too unstable for any major construction project, and the idea was scrapped.

      @oneandonlysound3453 6 лет назад +1

      I know right what did people want? another rmc ANYTHING? so low capacity or same boring elements? or some random B&M I mean an invert would be cool but no need for a hyper with steel phantom's revenge being there. this coaster looks epic and i hope it paves the way for more like it even if much smaller with less inversions start getting built. actual innovation and a real steel coaster not some joke of a "conversion" or low capacity mess or "this is five bigger than the last coaster just like it we built 2-5 years ago."

    Explanation of how the track doesn’t look like an s&s: the ride was designed in NoLimits 2, and they used the default track. The default track is supposed to be used for shwartzkopf coasters, but s&s used the style because it was probably the closest thing in the software.

      Please tell me that was not the default track in NL2. If that’s the case then reliability and engineering can become potentially huge issues.
      The reason being is it would show the ride hasn’t been prototyped, unless the NL2 presentation was deliberately done to not reveal details to their competitors.

      This isn't even remotely a "GP comment." The park lost a coaster made of steel with inversions. "Sky Rocket" really didn't do much for that given it's completly different nature being a launch coaster and really random at that. "Steel Curtain" brings a coaster with a lot of solid inversions, and it's about time. so glad there's no rmc ANYTHING as rumored so much in past days.

  • @oneandonlysound3453
    @oneandonlysound3453 6 лет назад +5

    This is just real true innovation here. Not just another "oh let's get one of these" or "barely different." I actually think getting a steel coaster like this is more fitting for a park that has basically regular wooden or steel coasters, not B&M or intamin, etc. Do I think it'd be great if the park got a B&M invert to round out their lineup in like maybe 4-5 years? Yes. But it'll have three solid-probably 2 great steel coasters now. And it's wooden layout is pretty good, though i never got what is so great about thunderbolt. honestly, i'm mega jealous. But i can hope that even if not to this magnitude that this might mean a lot more parks may finally return to getting solid steel coasters and not just more low capacity stuff like raptors or rmcing every wooden coaster. The name is wierd though, but, also as not a sports fan, i honestly like the colors and the concept behind the area. I do think they should definitely either bring in some new flat rides (2-3) or move and retheme some, as to me, an "area' Isn't a coaster and some themed stuff. it's about as much of a "new section" as "golden kingdom" is a section at six flags gadv which basically consists of walking too far for a drop tower and a broken strata coaster (which i'm hoping they do add a ride over there and clean it up a bit).

    Also, the themeing is actually perfect. The "Steel Curtain" was an iconic defensive line from one of the most successful times in Steelers history. This whole "Steelers Country" area will be very popular among locals as our football team is a great source of civic pride. It also looks like a good zone for the whole family with carnival games for kids who were put in black and gold onesies as soon as they were born. As someone who used to spend a lot of time waiting for dad to get off roller coasters I wasn't yet tall enough to ride, I like that they have all that in one place. Even though I don't care about football, I'll buy tickets as soon as they announce an opening date!

      MagnificentBISH No one in Pittsburgh would be confused by it, and few adults, but yes, teens and children who don’t come from the area might be confused. A better argument against the name is just that people outside the Steelers fanbase won’t share the love. It’s an iffy thing to name a coaster after a sports franchise.

      This coaster and attraction is going to bring tons of fans to this park. This part of the park isn’t being made for people who aren’t locals or fans of the Steelers. Who usually goes to theme parks that aren’t really themed? Locals, like all the Six Flags, it’s locals that go. They want to please the football fans in the area. The Steelers have millions of fans, and even if the coaster is terrible, it’s going to bring thousands of new people to that park a year. I’m going to drive 5 hours just to ride it!

      Carson Rocky I know, I hope a miracle happens and they decide to go with a plan B, like how Six Flags Great adventure announced the Joker took over the ride, mabye they will accounts something like “Breaking news, people have seen strange events taking place in the local forest and rumors of a cursed area of the woods has forced the construction area to be temporarily closed” and then they realize teasers showing a different colored ride and a fake police report or something about how the curse of the woods vandalized the coaster by painting it brown or black or green or something, they change the name and color scheme and work it in to the theme of the ride and the teasing campaign like what sixflags did with total mayhem
